5 out of 5 stars from all Companions the second most valuable........2000-09-19

Since the coming out of the second generation of Rolemaster, the companions seem a bit over the age.. but in my opinion, these classical and excellent written companions, esp. Companion II, are a valuable and needful supplement a GM should own. Companion II has 13 new professions, 65 new spells and over 100 new optional skills. Also MasterTables are included. Because of the new professions, the companion is very valuable, including Scholar, Beastmaster, Paladin, Warrior-Mage, Necromancer, Witch, Sage, Shaman, Dancer, Trader, Dervish, Warlock, Conjuror and Runemaster. Additionally the base lists of these new professions. Very valuable to the users of Channeling and Essence companions also, because of the nice informations, backgrounds and spells.

4 out of 5 stars Let your Players be the characters they dream of..........2000-04-29

Talent Law is a supplement for the Rolemaster Standard System game that is designed to replace the "background options" section of the original rulebooks.

Through a point-based system, players can now choose the Talents, Special Skills, Abilities and Flaws they want, rather than being completely random as is standard in the regular rules.

The book provides a greater breadth of options, and that's a good thing, because when your players can create a character much closer to what they envision, that improves the game for all.

Note: some of the talents vs. flaws may feel a bit unbalanced to some, so GM's should carefully consider the impact it will have on their games. But you can always disallow anything you feel is out of hand.

Overall, this is a great choice if you favor design of your heroes over pure, random design (although the Talents and Flaws all have random charts available should you choose to go that route.)

5 out of 5 stars Rolmaster Arcane Companion- What a book.......2001-02-26

To all Rpg gamers out there. This book is a must have for your collection. I presently do not own this book but borrowed a friend's and WOW. The Rolemaster game gets even better with this probably the last and never to be seen again Arcane Companion. The book has spell lists that have never been seen before and has its own spell failure tables that refect the danger of using such awsome power. This book is incredible, it complements your already owned books of Spell law and Arms Law for Rolemaster. If you don't have Spell law then this book stands on its own as a base list for many of the magic classes. This book brings in more classes with thier own magic lists than there was previous to this publication and while these character types use only Arcane spells some of the more common casting classes can use Arcane lists as well. This book is excellent, all one would need is this book and the main book and you have one wild game going. I highly recommend this book. I also say get it while you can because ICE, who makes these books is no more so buy while the product is still there or end up crying over your dice for lack of it. Play on...

Arms Law expands the combat system from Rolemaster Fantasy Role Playing to its full breadth.

Remember...it's not the bruises that kill! Critical damage is what wastes your enemies! Arms Law presents a dozen types of critical strikes -- described in vivid detail -- that allow you to graphically describe the brutality to combat!

3 out of 5 stars A Basic Requirment to Rolemaster Games.......2002-11-20

First of all, anyone purchasing the Role Master Standard Rules should make this a concurrent purchase, or at least the next purchase. The standard rule book has almost no information on the stastistics and use of weapons in game. It has no critical tables either. All that is in this book. That makes it the quentissential book to accompany the Rolemaster standard rules.
I was looking for this book to be the Rolemaster equivent of the old AD&D Player's Option: Combat and Tactics book. It is not. It is a book full of tables. If you thought the standard rule book had tables in it, nearly every page of this book is a table. This book details something like 29 weapons commonly found in typical fantasy middle ages role playing adventures. There is no colorful weapon descriptions etc., just raw stats for the Rolemaster game.
For each weapon, you get this: the weapon name, how long it is, how much it weighs, how likely it is to "fumble" the weapon in combat, how likely the weapon is to break in combat, how durable the weapon is, the range of the weapon (if it is a missle weapon) and a small picture of the weapon. Then an attack table filling an entire page follows. Yes, each weapon has it own seperate and different attack table. These tables cross reference a percentile role (modified by skill, and all the other common situation modifiers) and the "armour type" of the foe. This gives you a combat result ranging from no damage, to "hits" worth of damage, to hits of damage and a critical damage of various degrees of severity.
The combat works under the theory that heavily armoured foes are easier to deal "concussion points" of damage to, because they are slower, but that it is unlikely that they will suffer great critical damage. Lightly armoured foes are the opposite. They are fast enough to dodge many attacks, but when contact is made, chances are it will be with some form of critical damage. Interesting, different.
On the opposite page is the one or two critcal damage tables the weapon uses. They can get moderately graphic as far as describing the injuries inflicted upon the unfortunant victim. If that is for good or ill, everybody will have to decide for themselves.
The print is small, but it is down right tiny when two critical tables are squeezed onto one page. In these situations, seriously, use a magnifying glass to keep from going too hard on the eyes.
From there, a table of more exotic weapons is listed, their stats and the basic table to use to resolve their damage. Tables for martial arts manuevers are given, fumble tables to roll on when a player botches an attack roll for each category of weapon (1-Handed Edged, 2-Handed, Pole-arm, etc), attack tables for animals, and a few more pages on expanding the combat system, but not near enough in my opinion.
If you want to play Rolemaster, buy the book. You need it. Here is what to do with it. Take it to the nearest copy shop and copy all the weapon tables with their coresponding critical tables photocopied. Copy the common weapons several times (ie. the weapons the PCs are most likely to use). Put them all in the clear sheet protectors, attack tables on one side, and crit table in the other. Put them in a 3 ring binder in alphabetical order with clearly maked tabs sticking out. This way a GM does not have to flip through the book and slow down game play. Every player should get a copy of the attack and crit table for the weapon he/she uses to keep with his/her character sheet. That way there is no flipping for the PCs. That way the book is only referened for the weird stuff and the game flows more.
Bottom line, buy the book. Just don't expect more than basic but necessary rules information, in Rolemaster's standard format of tables, tables, tables.
As always, the best in gaming experiences to all!!

4 out of 5 stars Essential for Rolemaster........2002-01-31

It's essential to play Rolemaster, for it contains details and tables for the combat sequance. If you wish to play Rolemaster it is a must buy.

        3 out of 5 stars A heavy system.......2002-01-15

I mean, rolemaster is good, but you really need to simplify some stuff. I recommend the arms law to handle critical damage in dark ages settings, if you like doing it. If you have other system, better get used to its limitations, rolemaster is for few, really few.

The Rolemaster companion is a great book to add a bit more spice to the allready great rolemaster system. It adds several new classes with the paladin amongst them. it also adds several new rules and has a bit on arcane as well as tons of new spells. The companion gives two new background tables one for mages one for fighters which are in my opinion much better than the ones in the original albeit more risky. Like all the rolemaster books the game master should read the book carefully and decide what rules to implement. This is realy a great product and any rolemaster fan should buy it.

3 out of 5 stars a good system for magic item creation.......2000-12-29

This is a rolemaster system role-playing game supplement focusing on treasure and magic item creation. It includes magic item creating spell lists for mages, priests and mentalists (psionicists). It contains a great section on the effects of magic on economies and how this impacts a roleplaying setting realisitically.

All the magic items in the book can be created using the spells in the book and it includes a system for rating the power of the items in levels.

It also includes non magical treasures such as gems (with tons of charts and descriptions) and supernatural materials from the well known mithril and adamant to the not so well known laen, eyog and black alloy.

Unfortunately the proofreading was very poor on this book.

Similar to a GURPS supplement, this is well thought out, useful for behind the scenes use in running a role playing game providing ideas on how to make the background rolepalying world make sense and have some flavor. It is easily adaptable to most game systems including D&D, GURPS and of course Rolemaster or MERP.

4 out of 5 stars A Must Read For Anyone Going Into Business.......2007-07-28

There are many books the shelves for the seasoned executive wanting to enhance his or her skills, but very few for the new executive crop.
Mark McCormack gives straightforward, no nonsense advise on the subtly of business that is not taught in ANY business school. The reader gets invaluable insights into the world of "the street smart executive" and how to immediately improve their people skills. While some of McCormack's "notes" may seem obvious to an experienced executive, the lessons are great examples of how interpersonal dealings can either make or break a business relationship. I highly recommend this book to anyone that wants to save the pain of trial by fire as they make their way through the corporate world. This is a must read for anyone wanting to be a "street smart executive".

4 out of 5 stars The business book I recommend .......2007-02-28

This book may seem over-simplified to the consumate business person, but it is filled with parables from an extremely successful gentleman. It was required reading when I was taking graduate courses. When people ask about setting up a new business, I recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Stright forward advice.......2006-02-15

McCormack's advice is stright forward which makes the book a quick and easy read. I tought he did justice to the topic of negotiations, which can trouble the best in the business at times. Even tough this book was written long time ago; the advice is relevent and easy to grasp. This book helped me and it is one of those books which leaves some sort of an impact on the reader.

Antidotal stories, personal opinions, and somewhat painful to listen too. It was a great premise, but the delivery isn't very good. I wish I had saved my money and not purchased this book

        3 out of 5 stars Catchy Title.......2005-07-11

Catchy title, the author speaks from experience by sharing insights, wisdom, and advice. What don't they teach you at Harvard business school: How to be an effective salesman, how to negotiate, how to create flexible and dynamic organization, and how to stay in business?

Reading people: McCormack likes to meet people in person. He considers the meeting an aggressive experience where he looks for clues about the person: their mannerism, what they wear, and body language. He says, "But the real self-one's true nature-can't change color to suit its environment." McCormack is undeceived by the in person experience seeing through the corporate personae which is situational by looking for tangible evidences to form impressions and listening aggressively. McCormack tries not to make preconceived notions before meeting the client, such as, preconceived notions of mistrust. McCormack says, "Shrewd insights into people can be gained simply through the powers of observation." McCormack's faith in insight extends broadly, he says, "insight into people ... gives you the ability to predict the future." Ego makes a difference. A person's ego may be your strongest ally. A big ego may mean the person needs to assert themselves and this can be manipulated to close the deal. McCormack advises to take advantage of venue to close a deal by moving the client out of their environment of control. Silence can be an effective approach to winning, take time to use what you learn, time correctly, and be discreet are his advice in reading people.

Creating Impressions. How people relate to you in business is based on the conscious and unconscious statement you make about yourself; impressions are the art of manipulating form, sizing up between players, establishing the dynamic of negotiation, and establishes the tone and mode of doing business. Creating the right impressions can be as simple as treating people the way they want to be treated. Helpful suggestions include: dress as though you mean business, prepare for split second efficiency, don't be a time thief, meet on your own turf, say what you mean, and make notable gestures. Common sense is your best personal asset in business. A good sense of humor creates a long lasting impression. The key to coming across as your best self is by playing the role that features your strongest business qualities and hides your worst. McCormack, however errors in the following hedonistic statement, "The truth can be couched in such a way that it is neither insulting nor self destructive." It leads one to think "Salesmen never tell the truth."

Taking the Edge. McCormack defines "Taking the Edge" to mean taking everything you know about others and everything you have allow them to know about yourself and using this information to load the deck - to tilt a business situation slightly to your advantage.

The problem of Selling. By the time we enter the real world of business a new factor emerges, for the first time our power of persuasion, our sales abilities are being judged and this can be intimidating fearing rejection. One of the biggest problems that people have with selling is that it seems less important than twenty years ago. Selling is what they don't teach you at Harvard business school. Business Schools admit that they train managers MBA. He points out without sales there will be nothing to manage. McCormack prefers new hires with a legal degree. McCormack himself is a lawyer holding a seat on a prestigous NY Law firm, so of course, he is going to prefer lawyers to MBAs.

Staying in Business. McCormark believes in flexibility, cooporation, interdepartmental communication, and defying organization structure norms and guidelines too keep opportunities from being ignored.
