Product Description

When chess masters Louis Charles Mahé de la Bourdonnais and Alexander McDonnell met at London’s Westminster Chess Club in 1834, the occasion was notable for a number of reasons. Hard-earned reputations were zealously protected, and masters of equal standing seldom faced each other on even terms. The chess world was watching closely, but it was the actions of bystander William Greenwood Walker, who carefully recorded each move of the 85 games, that would have the greatest impact on the future of chess. The recording and publication of game scores from a series of matches between masters was a first in chess history. The event irrevocably altered the game, giving birth to modern chess theory. Once based upon composed, abstract exercises, studied in isolation, theory now became concrete and measurable. Practice replaced contrivance, and tactics could be studied and honed in light of the avalanche of match records that followed. Louis Charles Mahé de la Bourdonnais and Alexander McDonnell played six chess matches in 1834. Biographies of the combatants illuminate their place in the game’s history, and their historic venue is examined. The 85 games are analyzed using modern theory; there are numerous diagrams and previously published commentary. The merits of the openings, middle- and endgame maneuvers of the two are weighed. Nine appendices present selected games against other opponents; excerpt a contemporary account of the games’ ambience; provide other interesting documents; present statistics; and provide a schematic of mistakes made by both contestants. Bibliography, notes, indexes.

5 out of 5 stars The absolute authority!.......2006-11-19

First of all, have you ever read ANYTHING on the Internet ... only to look for it later, and discover that it had been moved or deleted? (One of my 'pet peeves.') I don't know why anyone does this, much valuable material: chess games, book reviews, news items, etc; these are all deleted on a regular basis. (Please read on, you will see the relevance of this complaint later in this review.)

I have had this particular book for many months now ... all I can say is that there are literally hundreds of books that people have sent me over the last few years, and I need to do book reviews on all of them ... eventually.

Chess History: what is the perhaps the most important match of the last 250 years? Which match was one of the first to pit the top masters from two different countries that were considered to be the leading chess nations of that day? Which match was the FIRST to have all the moves of that event recorded for chess posterity?

The answer was the event of 1834, which was - in actuality - a series of matches between la Bourdonnais and McDonnell.

Morphy studied these matches, as did many other chess players of the 1800's. But for over 100 years, the regular player could not find a book on these games anywhere. In the last 20-30 years, chess databases contained all of the games, as did a few other sources ... but most of these were inaccessible to the average chess enthusiast. A permanent record of these games was long overdue.

Taylor Kingston did an excellent, if somewhat lengthy review, for Chess Cafe, (The authorized merchandise distributor for the U.S. Chess Federation.). However, even though I have searched for it diligently, I can see no trace of this review on their website. (It is archived on my web pages; you should be able to find it with any search engine.)

Should you study these games? Well, to be honest, the answer is yes and no. As an Original USCF LIFE-Master, the student might look at these games and they would appear to be a little crude. Of course, one must bear in mind that they were played almost 200 years ago - chess has advanced considerably since that time. Additionally, several reviewers have pointed out that the analysis in this book is not perfect, the assiduous player, aided by Fritz, (or any other chess program); will definitely find improvements in the play and the notes ... should he (or she) choose to do so.

Then why would you buy this book? I think that this question has more than one answer:
# 1.) It is the ONLY place where you can find ALL the games ... and the notes from dozens of different sources in one place. (The author gets an A+ for his research, I doubt if any pertinent source has been overlooked or missed.)
# 2.) I enjoy a chess game that has been diligently annotated; many times there are copious notes, especially in the more famous of these encounters.
# 3.) The average player, which means anyone rated below 1850, will definitely learn a great deal by diligent study of these historic clashes.
# 4.) Anyone who considers himself a serious student of chess history will definitely want this book; it is as thorough and as in-depth as anyone could hope for.

A small side note is that the author even found my web pages, and mentions them in a couple of places. (See the notes to game # 04 and game # 50.)

In the end, this is a fantastic book, it receives my highest recommendation. This is a beautiful hardback edition with a library binding, the highest quality paper, and top-notch editing. This is a volume that most chess players would be proud to own and place on their book-shelf. I conclude with a quote from Mr. Kingston's review: (this book) ... "must be considered the definitive work on this important event, and one of the best of its kind ever. It is a book that scholars will cherish, and that anyone with the least interest in the game's history will enjoy."

5 out of 5 stars Great Story of an Important Historical Match.......2005-11-12

This is a terrific book about an important historical chess match. If you play chess, even if you don't have a great interest in these historical figures, the games are interesting and the author has gone to great pains to get all the information he possibly could relating to these players and these matches.

This is a hard back book, designed to last for years. It is well worth the price!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great Book!.......2007-07-08

I recommend this book to all PMs. It has very practical ready to use tools. Appendixes are very helpful.

5 out of 5 stars Great resource for foreign PMs.......2006-07-25

I recently moved to the US and while I managed software products in my native country, I wasn't familiar with the process or all of the terms used in the US. This book was very helpful as it didn't complicate or assume anything. Software is hard enough to manage - books about managing it shouldn't be. I appreciated that. The templates at the end saved me a lot of time and expense. I never expect any one book to answer all questions but for me, this book was a great help in my recent transition.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Way to Learn & Confirm Product Management.......2006-07-22

As I went to go and post a review of this book, I was shocked to see some of the negative reviews that are here. This book was fantastic in that it was simple, clear, and comprehensive. I've been a product manager for over 15 years and have managed product managers for the last 7. I work in a very successful software company and have been a successful PM. I was looking for a tool to help train my staff and this book was recommended by one of my colleagues at another company who is also a succsssful manager of PMs. I am glad I listened to my friend and not the people who think they know too much and need boast this via an Amazon book review. From my perspective, this book really helps - it helps new PMs understand what they are expected to do and how to do it. It also confirmed for me what I should expect of my employees and gave me some really staightforward tools to use, even after all these years. If you want a solid and accurate view of software product management, this is it. If the book missed anything, it was how to deal with unfulfilled engineering types....maybe next version?

2 out of 5 stars If this book is helpful to you, you have no business being in software product management.......2006-07-04

This book might have been essential back in 1998 when any goof with a good idea started a software company. But we've moved WAY beyond that.

Today, anyone in the software business should be able to have written this book. Its coverage is broad and cursory: development process, requirements management, product delivery, beta testing, pricing, internationalization, and more all in 139 pages (the rest of the book is sample documents).

As an example of how shallow this book is, on page 129 she sees it necessary to define a "byte" as "a single computer memory space." Please. If you hope to be a software product manager but don't know what a byte is, don't give up your day job.

The sample documents in the appendices are not bad but they don't justify the cost of the book.

The book contains numerous instances of unclear writing which lead me to believe the book was not edited professionally.

4 out of 5 stars Good Overview of Product Management.......2006-03-01

Overall: Good book to provide an introduction to product management. Also has a good set of sample document templates that can serve as guidelines.

Depth: I think the book does not intend to go in more detail by design. I would have liked more deep dive on some topics like the Pricing models, Role of the PM in the organization etc. But again, this book was probably not intended that way.

Breadth: It covers all the various areas pretty well I think.

Price: I would have expected a lot more material for the price tag. I was a little disappointed with the size and depth of the book in this regard.

Book Description

Job titles like "Technical Architect" and "Chief Architect" nowadays abound in the software industry, yet many people suspect that "architecture" is one of the most overused and least understood terms in professional software development.

Gorton's book helps resolve this predicament. It concisely describes the essential elements of knowledge and key skills required to be a software architect. The explanations encompass the essentials of architecture thinking, practices, and supporting technologies. They range from a general understanding of software structure and quality attributes, through technical issues like middleware components and documentation techniques, to emerging technologies like model-driven architecture, software product lines, aspect-oriented design, service-oriented architectures, and the Semantic Web, all of which will influence future software system architectures.

All approaches are illustrated by an ongoing real-world example. So if you work as an architect or senior designer (or want to someday), or if you are a student in software engineering, here is a valuable and yet approachable source of knowledge.

"Ian's book helps us to head in the right direction through the various techniques and approaches... An essential guide to computer science students as well as developers and IT professionals who aspire to become an IT architect". (Anna Liu, Architect Advisor, Microsoft Australia)

5 out of 5 stars See UML 2 applied to architecture specification.......2007-07-31

Get this book if you're interested in seeing UML 2 applied to software architecture specification. In any case, it gives a good overview of architecting with emerging technologies as well as state-of-the-industry middleware.

5 out of 5 stars Practical and timely.......2007-03-11

My Master's project deals with Software Architecture best practices and I turned to this book to help formulate my thoughts. The chapter on Middleware architectures is a valuable read and serves as a unifying framework for thinking about middleware in the architectural sense. The case study used in the book is helpful as well. Overall, you will find this book an excellent introduction to Software Architecture (with a nice dive into middleware and other topics not readily found in other SA books) and a nice read to go along with the other Software Architecture classics from the SEI.

5 out of 5 stars book review -- essential software engineering.......2006-07-11

This book attempts to bridge the gap between the needs of professional software architects and the current body of knowledge in software architecture. It aims to convey the essence of architecture thinking, practices and supporting technologies and provides concise discussions about the issues, techniques and methods in architectural practices. It also describes and analyzes the general purpose component and middleware technologies that support many of the fundamental architectural patterns used in applications.
As an introductory textbook it is very useful for (to be) ICT professionals and students.
