Bridge Basics 1.......2007-09-14
We have several books on beginning bridge, but this is the best one. It is easy to read and has excellent applications. By the time you read this book, and work through applications, you should be ready to play. I
Best Book Yet.......2007-07-18
I have studied with all four of Audrey Grant's previous series: the Club, Diamond, Heart and Spade books and I think, for basic information, Bridge Basics 1 is the best. It is not only easy to read but easy to understand. With her charts and practice lessons, one can learn a lot about bridge without ever taking a class.
Book Description
Covers the concepts needed when both sides are bidding for the contract. It introduces preemptive opening bids, overcalls and takeoutdoubles.

Great study tool.......2007-04-11
Great explanations and fully worked out problems makes it a great study aid
Excellent Textbook Companion.......2006-10-29
I initially picked up this book to do remediation on my first circuit analysis course, and have continued to use it through the second course. I call the Shaum Series my "secret weapon" for doing well in EE classes (and physics too, actually). The few pages of exposition at the beginning of each chapter are clear, concise, and mostly complete (Electric Circuits by Nahvi is more rigorous), and the problems, half with detailed solutions and half with just answers, are on-topic, perfectly-tailored, and numerous.
If you are taking circuit analysis courses, EE or not, you would be a fool to not have this book in your bag.
Excellent supplement on the topic of circuit analysis.......2006-06-02
This is an excellent supplement for electrical technology and electrical engineering students taking a first course on circuit analysis. It is a particularly good companion to Boylestad's "Introductory Circuit Analysis", which is a standard circuit analysis text that has insufficient examples on several subjects. This outline starts with the analysis of DC resistive circuits, goes on to AC circuits, and also covers power circuits, transformers, and op-amps. There is a good chapter on complex numbers and phasors, an understanding of which is essential for the study of circuit analysis. There is no need of differential or integral calculus although the book uses derivatives in the chapters on capicitors, inductors, and transformers as needed for voltage-current relations. Even though there is not one integral shown in the book, the outline is still useful to engineers since circuit analysis courses mainly use only algebra.
This book also presents necessary tools such as PSPICE, the computer circuit analysis and simulation program for PC's. SPICE is the standard for analog circuit simulation across the electronics industry, and knowledge of its syntax is essential. The outline also covers the use of advanced scientific calculators in the context of solving actual problems.
Besides being a good source of examples and solved problems, this outline does a pretty good job of outlining the basic theory of circuit analysis. I highly recommend it.
Ground Zero Review.......2005-03-27
This book is an excellent starting point for the basics of electrical engineering. 30 years after graduating, I started with this book in preparing for the Professional Engineering exam. Many problems, with solutions, which solidifies the basic theory.
The best $15 I have ever spent!
Well written.......2004-04-10
BASIC CIRCUITS ANALYSIS - 2nd Edition - O'Malley
Not a bad book for students confronting analog circuit analysis for the 1st time. The book should also provide a comfortable review for someone who has been away from the subject for awhile
It is obvious that some thought went into this work. The book is without calculus, but the EE student should appreciate the crisp & clean presentation & find it a good companion to a more advanced course. It is often the insight & approach to solving these basic analog circuit analysis problems that are most important at this time & this book should help in that regard. As opposed to many technical books by this publisher, I found few errors; however I have not worked many of the problems - which are numerous. The book follows the Schaum Outline format: bare-bones introduction of a subject with some of the meat contained in the problems. This can result in one needing another sentence or two in the text to fill a hold, as in the chapter on Phasors, for example.
I do think the PSpice circuit analysis is over played a bit. The author does introduce the old MS-DOS text based system (with little explanation) where circuit node files must be written, compiled & run. I suspect that since Windows 95 & the wide distribution of PSpice 8.0 with the schematic capture front end, these more recent & useful features would now be in use in most institutions & work places.
However, the book is well worth the price & covers most of the subjects usually encountered in a 1st semester course of beginning analog circuit analysis plus a good introduction to Op-Amps. I recommend the book.
Book Description
Audrey Grant does it again with an amazing new book, Popular Conventions, the third book in a series. It cover everything from playing at a party table to a tournament table; Popular Conventions teaches you the core conventions that will strengthen your game for sure. It introduces you to the Stayman convetions, Jacoby transfer bids, the strong artifical two club opening, Blackwood and Gerber. This book gives you a chance to get ahead and win!
Book Description
For beginners and novices looking to improve their game, this volume provides a succinct ten-lesson course.
Book Description
Overview of the American Bridge Series The American Bridge Series is designed as a sequential set of bidding courses, suitable for self-study or classroom-style study under the guidance of a professional bridge teacher. Volumes I through III include declarer play and defense skills as they relate to the bidding skills taught in each text. Volume IV is reserved for true experts; thus, declarer play and defense lessons would be an insult and are not included. The entire series takes about five years of study and practice to complete.
Volume I, The Basic American Bidding System, was written for beginners and for social players who need to brush-up on basic bidding skills prior to tackling modern bidding methods. It features 5-card major suit opening bids, strong twos, and some basics of Forcing and Non-Forcing Stayman, Blackwood, Gerber, and few other things designed to form the framework for further study.
Volume II, The Intermediate American Bidding System, makes the transition to modern methods including weak two openings. It teaches all of the pieces of "Standard" American in a way that integrates all of the varied forms of same. Don't be thrown by the term "intermediate." Many duplicate players think that they have reached that level when they can no longer play in novice games. Not so. "Intermediate," as defined by the authors, can vary from folks with zero ACBL masterpoints to 2500 masterpoints. It's not the points that count, it's the skill level.
Volume III, The Advanced American Bidding System presumes a complete understanding and skill with all of the material in Volume II. However, some of the Volume II material is repeated for intended redundancy, since the authors suspect that many folks who shouldn't be attempting to study Volume III will do so anyway. After all, "I'm a Life Master, I must be Advanced." The authors suggest that anyone not comfortable playing in Flight A at an ACBL regional or national tournament, or the World Bridge Federation (WBF) or other governing body equivalent thereof avoid purchase and study of Volume III until they have mastered all that is taught in Volume II.
Volume IV, The Expert American Bidding System, (NOT YET RELEASED) presumes two years' experience with the bidding techniques taught in Volume III, and expert declarer play and defense skills. This is not a "Mom and Pop" book. It is for those who wish to successfully compete in such ACBL events as Flight A Grand National Teams, the Blue Ribbon Pairs, the Life Master Pairs, the Spingold, Vanderbilt, and Reisinger teams, etc., and International events like the Bermuda Bowl and Venice Cup, The London Times Pairs, the McCallan, etc. It features 4-card majors, the TEAS responses to no trump openings, weak no trumps, and a variety of other bidding methods which will get bidders to the optimum place but will require expert declarer play or defensive skills to maximize results.
All four books emphasize sound, disciplined bidding and an underlying philosophy of "You bid your cards, I'll bid mine, we'll get to the right spot." By the time students complete study and practice of Volume III, they should be able to know what cards partner holds almost to the spot at the conclusion of an auction. In fact, Jerry and one of his partners were once accused of cheating when they got cocky and did this after an auction. The comment was: "How can you know what cards your partner holds?" Jerry's answer: "Isn't that the whole point of the bidding?"

One big problem..........2007-07-14
I was disappointed that in this updated version the authors failed to incorporate their own corrections. They expect the reader to go through 14 pages of corrections and add notes throughout the book! The updates were released January 2005. Two and a half years is enough time to make one's own corrections in what appears to be self-publishing. At least, warn the consumer. Would not recommend to anyone.

Lawrence's only failure.......2001-09-08
Mike Lawrence is quite simply the best bridge teacher-author ever. All of his books are of consistently high quality, including his 'Look over my shoulder while I play' books such as "Dynamic Defense", "Play Bridge with Mike Lawrence" and "Play a Swiss Team of Four with Mike Lawrence." These books are not only wonderfully instructive and well written, they are FUNNY. The vignettes at the table are described with such wry detail that the reader feels pangs of loss when these books end. Unfortunately, this book, which contains no bridge, and concentrates on describing humorous table vignettes, is NOT FUNNY. Disappointing, but I felt much better after only a few pages of "Card Combinations."
Customer Reviews:
Great introduction.......2007-09-01
I hadn't played bridge in 45 years, and I wasn't very good even then. Audrey's book presents a clear and well-organized introduction to bidding and playing, with many good example hands with explanations.
Excellent for rubber and contract bridge players........1998-08-19
Grant's series goes from beginning bridge players to medium skilled. A wonderful, easy to read and understand series.
Customer Reviews:
Basic Bridge in Three Weeks: a fun an enjoyable book........2001-05-03
This is an excellent book. It is well organized, lucid, coherent. The format is ideal for a busy person like me: the chapters or short, to the point and can be read and absorbed in a period of 1/2-1 hour per session. Each chapter gives points about bidding followed by hand play so you always get to apply in practice what you learned in theory. I would have liked a "master chart" to which I could easly refer to review bidding responses instead of leafing back through the chapters, but this is a minor flaw. The book fulfills it's mission: after reading it one can play on a strong intermediate level. Alan J. Stein, MD
Excellent comprehensive guide for begining bridge players........1998-07-14
I have read several books aimed at novice and intermediate bridge players, but this is the most comprehensive and readable book on the subject I have seen. Play of the hand is associated with the bidding in each chapter. This is unlike "Contract Bridge Complete" by Charles Goren, and other similar books, where the reader spends the first half of the book counting cards and memorizing bids. This juxtaposition of bidding and play makes learning or reviewing the basics of Bridge dynamic and exciting!
For instruction or review, recommended for any bridge player.......1995-09-13
This well diagrammed, well organized, yet extremely
condensed book really can bring the beginner up to the level
of basic play; but note that basic is a relatiave term and
that the book is written by a master. The book assumes the
beginner is a bridge player at heart, which is to say,
focused and dedicated. I don't think there is any book on
bridge that can teach the game to a beginner alone, even to
those who are players at heart, but Truscott's book comes
close and is an excellent companion and guide both to the
beginner and enthusiastic teacher. It is also a valuable
reference and review for the so-called basic player.

Customer Reviews:
Must have small business book.......2006-07-17
Besides being quite possibly the best small business book I've read in a long time, Outfoxing is just plain FUN to read. Mr. Marks, a "foxy" business owner himself, shares the ways you can identify what kind of small business owner you're dealing with, what their most pressing business needs are, and create a strategy for marketing and communicating with your small business clients. He gives an insider view on the psychology of small business owners which helps with such common issues as getting paid time. He identifies the most common objections small business customers have and how to get around them. I especially loved that he puts an emphasis on creating loyalty and long term partnerships with our customers.
I can't count the number of "aha" moments this book gave me - and I'm supposed to be one of those crafty, seasoned business owners myself. I am going to be using this book as a gift and giveaway for a long time - it's fantastic!
Better understand the small to mid-market sector.......2005-03-25
Required reading for anyone who is dealing with small to mid-market companies-- or thinking about entering this marketspace. Gene has worked successfully with both large Fortune companies and the small to mid-market sectors and in this book he discusses the differences and really hones in on the small to mid market space. He then takes it to the next level and gives you the tools you need to be successful in this market space. Gene's writing style makes for a quick, straight-forward read.
A must have for anyone working with small business.......2005-02-18
I have not enjoyed a business book as much as this since Gerber's E-Myth. This book is very cleverly written and demonstrates a knowledge of small business that can only come through years of experience. Filled with useful information and fun to read.
It takes one to know one.......2005-02-11
It takes a fox to know a fox and the author knows his foxes because he's one too. So if you deal with foxes as does the author this is a very entertaining book that will give you a lot of great ideas for being foxier than you are.
Great strategies for success!.......2005-02-03
You've de-bunked the mystery of the small-business fox and given us great insight on to how best to recognize management styles and apply crafty techniques to win their business and continued loyalty!
