Book Description

Though the Ruy Lopez is one of the oldest openings in chess, it offers a host of exciting new variations just discovered in recent years; and though a favorite of champions such as Kasparov and Anand, it has a tactical clarity that makes it ideal for beginners. Australian champion Gary Lane provides a comprehensive course on the opening: the tricks and traps for both Black and White, and the full range of variations, attacking and positional--all explained and illustrated with the help of a stellar selection of model games. A must-have for all players seeking to improve their opening play.

3 out of 5 stars Ruy Lopez Explained.......2006-02-27

"The Ruy Lopez Explained" by Gary Lane is a Batsford book, evidently one of a series of "Explained" titles.
Despite the title,it's actually a White repertoire, not a two-sided discussion of the Ruy.
Gary Lane is a good writer, with the gift of writing in a breezy, conversational style.
Chapter headings are "Rare 3rd moves,Berlin,Classical,Schliemann,Deferred Steinita and other 4th moves,Open,Worrall Attack,Moller,Arkangel,Marshall Attack, and 9.d4.
Thus the main line closed defenses (9.h3) are avoided.
Although physically of normal size, the typeset is very large and open, leaving the book smaller than it appears.
I was disapointed in the superficiality of the coverage.
Compared, for ex. to "The 3.Bb5 Sicilian Revealed" (Neil MacDonald) that spends a lot of time on explanation and strategy in concrete terms.
The "explanations" here are very lazy,e.g. under the Moller variation the "Basic Plan for White" ENTIRE "discussion" is:"It is a good idea to try and prevent Black from taking the initiative in the opening. A theme for White is to play an early a4 to weaken the b5 pawn and continue to pursue it with a later Na3".
And I think the author was also lazy in the actual content,e.g., in place of 5.O-O,Be7 6.Qe2 if you want to play the Worrall you'd instead probably play 5.Qe2 and avoid the chance of facing the Open. (Nigel Davies mentions this).
Pruning tricks like this are what I would like to see in a repertoire book.
Of course Gary Lane has forgotten more about the Ruy than I'll ever know. I just think he didn't try very hard to write this book.
To be fair, ChessCafe reviewer Carsten Hansen thought pretty highly of the effort. Altho I greatly respect Carsten Hansen's reviews in general, I can't agree with this one.

5 out of 5 stars Good, but newer version is out.......2007-05-19

I would recommend this but there is a newer version of the Ultimate Foreclosure Kit, which is the Complete Guide to Real Estate Tax Liens and Foreclosure Deeds: Learn in 7 Days-Investing Without Losing Series by the same author. You should search by the ISBN number (0978834682) to find it. Found that out the hard way. I suggest getting only one of the books rather than both.

    5 out of 5 stars Very effective........2007-02-24

The foreclosures covered in this book relates to tax deeds. Basically you could own properties for one tenth the price. The things I liked about this book were mainly that...

    PROS:
a.) It's written by an investor. According to his bio page, he actually invests in tax liens and foreclosures. It's not a person who writes for a living and cares about proper grammar structures, but actually someone that has experience in what he's talking about.

b.) The book is for the average Joe. Some of the foreclosure books I've read took 3-4 chapters in before you learn anything. Some books don't even tell you how to do it, they just tell you how wonderful it is to be rich and being able to invest.

    CONS:
a.) I think the web site for the book could be better designed. Not really a fan of white text on black background. But heck, it's free and you don't have to pay anything extra to get updates.

    TABLE OF CONTENTS:
Day 1: Know The Types of Auctions
Day 2: Before You Start (Learn how to finance your investments, even from strangers online...)
Day 3: Where To Find Tax Auctions
Day 4: Research Before The Auction
Day 5: Bidding Types And Strategies
Day 6: Flipping Tax Deeds With Ease
    Day 7: Conclusion

    4 out of 5 stars Concise.......2007-02-23

I should have spelled that 'concice' to match the book! This book was straight to the point (less than an hour to read) but had lots of grammar, spelling and sentence structure errors. One paragraph had three errors in it! If you can get around that, plus the fact that this book is really more like a booklet, you'll find that it's ('its') loaded with great information!

    5 out of 5 stars Invaluable.......2007-02-02

One of the best books I've read on tax liens and tax deeds/government foreclosures. You don't buy this for bank foreclosures but for government foreclosures (which is often more common in some areas). I used this in time for Arizona auctions (occuring in late Jan and Feb) and so far the checklists and strategies hasn't done me any wrong. The maximum returns in Arizona is roughly 16% but you bid down to win. I was able to secure an average 13% on the tax lien instruments.

Some of the helpful things I liked were as follows:

    (1) Online web resources that gave updates on upcoming tax auctions
    (2) Tax lien calendar in the book that shows approx month each state holds their auctions.
    (3) Easy to read and understand without any technical or law jargon.

A hands-on guide for anyone who wants to make a fortune in real estate

In The Beginner's Guide to Real Estate Investing, successful real estate investor and author Gary Eldred gives readers concise and straightforward advice on avoiding common mistakes and achieving uncommon success in the housing market. Full of proven wisdom and the insight of a veteran investor, this comprehensive guide covers everything novices need to know about real estate, but also offers proven guidance that will help experienced investors stay sharp.

Eldred doesn't offer a quick-and-easy blueprint which wouldn't work anyway or promise overnight success. He covers topics real investors need to make real money. Whereas most real estate books take a one-size-fits-all approach, ignoring the fact that the market in Peoria isn't anything like the market in Chicago, Eldred shows investors how to adapt their strategies to fit changing market conditions. He covers more than just types of properties or financing, but also explains topics like tax certificates, commercial property, and discounted notes. Rather than tell investors what to do and exactly how to do it, Eldred provides the conceptual tools investors need to weigh the pros and cons of any course of action, allowing them the freedom to make their own success. This book doesn't just tell readers how to finance a condo or rehab a fixer-upper; The Beginner's Guide to Real Estate Investing covers all the vital aspects of real estate for anyone who's serious about making money.

Gary W. Eldred, PhD (Gainesville, FL), has been a successful real estate investor for over 20 years and has served on the business school faculty at Stanford University and the University of Virginia. He is the author of such successful real estate titles as The 106 Common Mistakes Homebuyers Make (and How to Avoid Them) (0-471-12658-6) and Value Investing in Real Estate (0-471-18520-5), as well as the Make Money series,

    Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Reader Beware, Beginner does not mean Dummie.......2007-07-08

Eldred has set this book up for what he considers to be a beginner. He does not take you by the hand and walk you through all the vocabulary or every aspect of the business. For example, if you don't know what owner financing is, expect to take a few pages to figure it out on your own.

Another problem I had with this book is that I am pretty sure that some of his methods for financing are illegal. He lives by the "They won't ask, and you don't tell" philosopy. He is also a big believer in no money down loan financing. I have seen A LOT of people get into trouble this way: it promotes get rich quick idealism and before you know it, you're in over your head.

However, there are a few things I did like, Eldred has experience, and gives pros and cons for ALMOST every one of his suggestions. While some of his financing ideas no one in their right mind should try, the rest are well presented and worth considering. He also breaks down the equation (math) side of things and gives examples to make it easier to understand.

Some useful stuff, but not what I was hoping for.

    5 out of 5 stars A good start.......2007-06-02

This is truly a good start to real estate investing because it covers a lot of different business models. I know many of us here come from a real estate agent background where our jobs are to sell for other people. This book kinda opens up your eyes to the rest of the real estate industry, where people are making more money by bypassing the real estate agent side.

This was one of the first books I've ever read on real estate and I highly recommend it. I have some other recommendations, see my other reviews.

4 out of 5 stars Concise and straight to the point.......2007-01-13

This book is comprehensive. It covers a lot of topics about real estate investing. Furthermore, it offers tips and tricks on how successful investors were able to pull off their deals. Something that is hard to come by, as many real estate authors aren't really investors.

Just a side note -- if you're an expert, you'd probably learn something from this, but overall you would be bored. So don't buy it thinking your going to get a "for experts" book, this is for beginners. Those that have not made their mark on the real estate market yet.

This book highlights real estate investing with

5 out of 5 stars An absolute "must-read" for any prospective real estate investor.......2007-09-06

Real estate broker, licensing instructor, and investor John A. Michailidis presents Beginner's Guide to Building Wealth Buying Houses: The Foolproof Roadmap to Real Estate Riches Without the Risks and Hassles of Landlording, a straight-talk guide to amassing a personal fortune through real estate assets. Defining wealth as "automatic income streams that are independent of your personal labor, and that are sufficient to maintain your chosen individual lifestyle indefinitely," Beginner's Guide to Building Wealth Buying Houses proves especially valuable to readers who are relatively new to real estate. While buying properties with intent to turn them around and resell them - "flipping" - is covered, Michailidis stresses that this form of real estate investment requires expert-level knowledge of local market conditions, and that and ordinary people can easily get burned. Instead, the primary focus is on how to acquire properties and use them to generate revenue streams through renting, or better yet, rent-to-own arrangements. Houses are recommended for beginners since they tend to attract more stable and reliable tenants than apartments. Chapters cover the economics of single-family houses, the right way to present offers, how to attract quality tenants, proven negotiation tactics, and much more. An absolute "must-read" for any prospective real estate investor, as well as anyone who dreams of becoming financially successful and secure.

5 out of 5 stars Begining Real Estate Investor? Read This Book First.......2007-08-08

This is an excellent book for beginning - and even seasoned - investors.
I've been a real estate broker for 29 years and know a thing or two about real estate investing. I try to keep abreast of all new books that come out on the subject.
Most real estate books are complicated, full of formulas and lots of theory. Some are so dull you can't get through the first couple of chapters. The author of this book writes in a very easy-to-read, conversational style.
I found the investing method in this book to be sound and easy to implement. It's not about making a million bucks in a couple of months like so many other books on the market today. It's a very safe, low- risk system that can slowly but surely lead to wealth. In my opinion it is a great way to invest a portion of one's IRA or pension plan - in real estate instead of just stocks.
If you are new to the world of real estate investing, I would certainly recommend making this your first book on the subject.

5 out of 5 stars Simple explanation of a daunting process.......2007-07-25

I read this book cover to cover in a single day. I could not put it down.

Author takes a difficult process and makes it so incredibly simple. Obviously there is homework involved, but even that is laid out for you in an easy to follow process. I can see real evidence of the author's e-myth style of setting up process and making the system do the work for you.

If you are looking to start investing in real estate, like we are, this is both the push we needed to jump in and the safety net of someone else's experience rolled into one.

4 out of 5 stars Very well written, easy read.......still found some shortcomings.......2007-07-20

Don't let my title fool you, i thoroughly enjoyed this book in fact, i usually never write these reviews but felt i should share this with others as I've read every review before purchasing the book.

This is a very "easy" read, probably the fastest book that i remember completing. I loved how the author got very detailed into how to conduct the transaction from beginning to end. The only issue i found was that I personally do not live in an area where a "nice home in a nice neighborhood" costs under 200K. I didn't see the author provide any direction to this issue if this was the case for the investor. I also had a hard time navigating the website they mentioned at the end of the book and couldn't find how to order the forms from the CD online.

Still a great book and a must read !!!

5 out of 5 stars Great book for beginning investor, without the fluff!.......2007-07-17

This book was so interesting I could not put it down! Everything one needs to lease purchase property. The author speaks in great detail without confusing you and not over your head. Enjoyed it immensely.

I purchased this book and highly recommend it! The author has experience as a real estate agent/investor. It has valuable information for anyone who owns a home already or is contemplating purchasing their first property. Book Description

I was working harder and harder to make others look good. I'd been employed at the Kansas City, Missouri Police Department for about 18 years, beginning in the Communications Unit as a 911 dispatcher right out of high school and concluding with the rank of Sergeant over a Narcotics Tactical Team. While I made a modest living, I was the primary "bread winner" in the family when my former spouse and I decided I would work, while she would stay home and take care of the kids. While I never regretted it, this decision led to work weeks of 70-80 hours, week in and week out. The toll of reaching financial freedom was not even within my grasp. Then 9/11 happened. While this was a tragic event in our nation's history and I was visibly saddened to watch the loss that these victims and their families had to endure, it opened up an opportunity for me to make some extra money. The Kansas City International Airport, the major airport in the Kansas City, Missouri metropolitan area, as every large airport nationwide required the addition of armed military and law enforcement personnel to man every individual gate and terminal in site. The Federal government was paying overtime pay to cover these positions. What an OPPORTUNITY! I'm going to be in the big money now! When it was all said and done, I had worked over 700 hours of overtime in 2002 and financially wasn't any better off on December 31 than I was in January of that year. I also had the opportunity to see all of these families traveling out of town to exotic locations for vacation. Watching all of these people leaving for vacation was not what I would call exciting. Me, being one of them would be! Toward the end of 2002, I overheard a friend of mine was leaving a coveted position in the Drug Enforcement Unit and going back to Patrol (uniformed position) assignment. When I asked him why he was leaving, he indicated it was going to allow more time for his real estate investment business. I am and have always been, one of those people who was hooked on the late night infomercials about real estate investing and how you could retire early. But, as I described earlier, I didn't have the money available to go out and take a chance on one of these programs. When I talked to my friend, he indicated that I needed to buy a couple of books, Rich Dad/ Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki and Building Wealth by Russ Whitney. Once I bought and read these books, I needed to call him back and we would go to lunch and talk further. That was on a Friday. The next Wednesday, I called him back and told him I had bought these two books and completely read both of them. He was shocked and amazed that I had been so diligent about this. This began my future in real estate investing and my quest for FINANCIAL FREEDOM.
