4 out of 5 stars Be Prepared to meet the Challenges.......2007-10-01

With each new volume the avid scrabble player becomes more adept to meet the challenges of intercultural usages of words, making the competition involved in word building, more exciting and satisfying.
Thank you for a great and informative volume.

I have enjoyed my book. It has increased my game. The book is in fine condition.

1 out of 5 stars I'm sorry, but Qwerty is NOT a word........2007-09-06

I'm sorry, but Qwerty is NOT a word. Neither is "Herstory" or a good number of other stoopid werds in this aggravating book that - unfortunately - somehow got isself endorsed by Scrabble officials. The definitions are slim and in many cases, nonexistent. I thought Scrabble was supposed to be played in English? well, there's lots of foreign words in here too. "Barneys"?!?! That's a name. Furthermore, we've been playing Super Scrabble (twice the scores, twice the tiles, and twice the time - but BIG fun), and another aggravating "feature" is that this book does not contain any words longer than 8 characters - so you can fuggeddabout adding onto "Further" to make "Furthermore" - cause its not in here! This book gives me an Incredulity (11 letters - not in there!) socre of 75% and an Aggravation (also 11 letters - and not in there either!) score of 99%. Every time we play I want to do a Farenheit 451 on the damn thang!!!!

2 out of 5 stars To many two-letter foriegn words, e.g. xi, xu, qi.......2007-09-02

I got this book because I was heading out on a month-long trip with some people I didn't know and they said they liked to play scrabble. I figured this would be the easy way to end all potential conflict between on this subject. It did that pretty well, but in part because we all did not like many of the words in this book.

I was especially appalled with the words Xi, xu, qi and others like that that converted scrabble from a game of leveraging your vocabulary to one of remembering odd otherwise-useless trivia about strange words.

The next time I play scrabble I am going to request that we either eliminate 2-letter words, or stick to ones that would have been in common english usage throughout the 20th century.

i was very happy. item came in a timely manner and in good condition. thank you.

If you're using the 1991 edition or the 1978 original, you're woefully behind the Scrabble-playing times. With more than 100,000 2- to 8-letter words, there are some interesting additions ("aargh," "aarrgh," and "aarrghh" are all legitimate now), while words they consider offensive are no longer kosher. Why subscribe to the Scrabble dictionary's changeable lexicon? Well, it ends the argument of whose dictionary to use, but the main reason is that it's the winner's dictionary, and why play Scrabble if not to win? Memorize those 2- and 3-letter words, and your Scrabble game becomes lethal.

A wonderful tool for the scrabble players. Easy to use and handy to have

5 out of 5 stars Mom's an avid Scrabble player.......2006-11-10

And she doesn't dare part with this to anyone. This is something she truly appreciates. The one thing that surprised her is that since it's in large print, the book is larger than the smaller print pocket version. She keeps it at home for safekeeping and enjoys it very much.

1 out of 5 stars This book has been replaced by 4th edition!.......2006-10-12

Do NOT get this book -- which contains only the THIRD EDITION of the allowable Scrabble words. If you want the FOURTH EDITION, which is current up through its publication in late 2005, use this number to search Amazon's catalog: 0877796343 which will take you to the Fourth Edition, Large Print. For some reason, you can't find it by using words like "Scrabble Large Print" to find that edition -- you have to use the ISBN number.

Using the older edition might be okay if Amazon starts selling it at a discount; it's certainly good enough for friendly family games (in most families!) but won't get you where you need to go if you are playing competitively, and need the most current list of new coinages, acceptable 2-letter words, and q-words.

5 out of 5 stars Large print scrabble dictionary.......2006-07-08

This dictionary is excellent to read and has definations that the smaller version does not have.

1 out of 5 stars This book is out of date.......2005-10-22

I don't know why Amazon is still pushing the 3rd edition 4 months after the release of the 4th edition, which is much superior! The 4th edition is available on Amazon as well, but you have to look elsewhere for the large print (Walmart online has it).

1 out of 5 stars not worth it.......2007-08-25

A good idea, but its flaws defeat its purpose. The 2-letter word list is out-of-date: no AG, AL, EX, EM, MO, MU, NE, SH, WO, and XU; and an added DA that shouldn't be there. And the promised 3-letter list is missing.

5 out of 5 stars Extremely helpful.......2006-04-07

I found this book extremely helpful. While it doesn't have every word that can be used, it does have so many words it will have your head spinning! Not every 2 & 3 letter words are in here but it's only the 1998 edition.

1 out of 5 stars A great idea... but..........2003-05-24

This book is a good idea badly executed. The two major flaws are that (1) it is nearly impossible to look things up in it because of a lack of header/footers to tell what section you are in, and (2) it is woefully out-of-date with even the two-letter words being incorrect. I found this out the hard way playing "da" a few too many times.

Fix those two things and include the actual 3-word letter list and you've got a useful book.

1 out of 5 stars Not helpful.......2003-01-04

I found this book to be close to useless--extremely hard to figure out how it's supposed to be organized, close to impossible to find anything.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Utility For Scrabble Strategists.......2002-12-05

There are two official Scrabble books that matter. This is the other (the first is a dictionary).

The bulk of "The Official Scrabble Brand Word-Finder" by Robert W. Schachner is word lists. The 'b' words includes (can you believe it?) 'b' words. 'Book,' of course, is in that list, but so is 'vibe,' as it includes a 'b.'

Now, it may seem silly, but they include a surprisingly handy list of two-letter words. Laugh if you like, but at the end of the game, when it is your turn, and you've only got an 'o' and an 'e,' wouldn't you be happy to remember that 'oe' is a completely legal Scrabble word? You betcha! No, I don't know what it means. That us what the other Scrabble book supplies: definitions.

There is an excellent section of prefixes and suffixes, which will help prepare you to think through complex combinations utilizing what's already on the board.

It is not as much fun as a dictionary, but for the function it employs, I fully recommend "The Official Scrabble Brand Word-Finder" by Robert W. Schachner.

4 out of 5 stars Scrabble Puzzle Book Review.......2006-02-24

This book is excellent as it contains many ways to improve and versify your Scrabble skills. There are many new games and approaches, which can range from novice to challenging. It contains many new words and methods of setting up the board during play, and if one really examines the games, one will certainly improve their Scrabble skills. As well, there are many games provided that will take hours to decipher and play.

    5 out of 5 stars great book.......2005-04-13

This is very useful for those of us who like playing word games, especially the page of two letter words.

4 out of 5 stars Improving your game.......2004-11-30

You can pick up some good tips on how to beat your opponents from two-time National Scrabble Champion Joe Edley along with some challenging puzzles in this modest Scrabble puzzle book. I particularly recommend the material on pages 194-202 where Edley suggests that you develop the habit of asking yourself questions before making a play.

For example, question number one is, "Do I have a bingo?" (A good first question!) Question number two is the obvious, Which bonus squares are available, but question number three really gets to the nitty-gritty of good play: "Can you 'hook' any words? Look at every word already on the board and ask yourself if any single letter can be added to the front or back to form another word." Also important is question number four: "What will my 'leave' be after I've made my play?"

Too often the beginning player does not pay enough attention to the tiles he or she is going to be stuck with after a play. Sometimes, Edley advises, it is better to make a lower-scoring play in order to leave oneself with tiles likely (with a little help) to form a bingo.

The bulk of the book is devoted to Scrabble puzzles on various themes, e.g., "Placing your letters on hot spots"; using the J, Q, X and Z; two-, three-, four- and five-tile plays, etc. There is a diagram of the Scrabble grid with some plays already made. Underneath the diagram are the letters in several different racks. You are asked to find the best play. Edley recommends that you do the puzzles by setting them up on your own Scrabble board. I think that is the best way as well since the diagrams in the book are in black and white and so the bonus squares are not colored, and are highlighted only by the letters "DWS," "DLS" ("Double Word Score," "Double Letter Score"), etc. This makes it hard to get a quick feel for where to look. At least that was my experience.

A handy feature is the list of the 97 two-letter words allowed in official Scrabble tournaments on page 7. (I think that has been changed to 96 with "da" now being disallowed.) Interesting features include the weighed scores for answers to the various puzzles. For example, for the puzzle on page 93 there is an "expert" score (for five racks) of 155, a "good" score of 145, and an "average" score of 120. But Edley also gives his score of 164 and challenges you to beat it.

There are 800 puzzles, so this book will last through many a long winter's night; however this is not as good a book as the more substantial Everything Scrabble (revised 2001) by Edley (along with John D. Williams, Jr.), which I also recommend for the serious Scrabble player.

    4 out of 5 stars Somewhat useful.......2003-05-09

This is a good game if you're trying to find a way to make that 20 or 30 point word to put you in the lead for good. If I used it in some of my Online Scrabble games, I think that I would be fine. That's just me though.

              About the Authors:

Robert Scoble helps run Microsoft's Channel 9 Web site. He began his blog in 2000 and now has more than 3.5 million readers every year. Scoble's blog has earned acclaim in Fortune magazine, Fast Company, and The Economist.

              An Excerpt from Naked Conversations:

Bloggings's Six Pillars: There are six key differences between blogging and any other communications channel. You can find any of them elsewhere. These are the Six Pillars of Blogging:

              1. Publishable.Anyone can publish a blog. You can do it cheaply and post often. Each posting is instantly available worldwide.

              2. Findable. Through search engines, people will find blogs by subject, by author, or both. The more you post, the more findable you become.

              3. Social. The blogosphere is one big conversation. Interesting topical conversations move from site to site, linking to each other. Through blogs, people with shared interests build relationships unrestricted by geographic borders.

              4. Viral. Information often spreads faster through blogs than via a newsservice. No form of viral marketing matches the speed and efficiency of a blog.

              5. Syndicatable. By clicking on an icon, you can get free "home delivery" of RSS- enabled blogs into your e-mail software. RSS lets you know when a blog you subscribe to is updated, saving you search time. This process is considerably more efficient than the last- generation method of visiting one page of one web site at a time looking for changes.

              6. Linkable. Because each blog can link to all others, every blogger has access to the tens of millions of people who visit the blogosphere every day.

You can find each of these elements elsewhere. None is, in itself, all that remarkable. But in final assembly, they are the benefits of the most powerful two-way Internet communications tool so far developed.

              4 out of 5 stars Very Helpful.......2007-08-09

As a novice blogger and blog reader, I found this book to be a very helpful initiation into the culture of blogging. While the authors can be a bit "preachy" at times, they do get their message across and I find that their views on what blogging is all about ring true.

If you are already out there in the blogosphere, you will probably not find anything new here. However, if you are just getting your start, and especially if your business is just getting its start in blogging, this is an important book to read.

              4 out of 5 stars Great book!.......2007-07-23

I'm really enjoying the book. I'm blogging for my company, and was very interested in the insights of these men. They offer far more than just blogging guidelines - they offer a window into how our communication styles have developed in the digital age, and how to serve our employers with our communications.

Great book - I'm recommending to friends.

Received quickly & in great condition.

4 out of 5 stars Every Marketing person should read this book.......2007-06-01

Blogs are another way of marketing a company's products and services and drawing folks into the raison d'etre for the company doing certain things, or going in a certain direction. Websites offer information, but no dialog.
My take on this book is that .. this is a must read for every Marketing person. Blogs have a huge potential for making companies look human and help sell products.
The book is very 'straight from the heart'. You can see that all over the place :). These guys are really into blogging and passionately so.
The industry examples are very good. Google and Apple not encouraging blogging was a big surprise.

5 out of 5 stars A Practical Guide to Corporate Blogging.......2007-04-07

Naked Conversations is an insightful guide to the phenomenon of corporate blogging. Robert Scoble and Shel Israel have taken the fundamental message of The Cluetrain Manifesto--the claim that `markets are conversations'--and explored its business implications. Less visionary than The Cluetrain Manifesto, Naked Conversations is far more practical and instructive. It's the kind of book that you could recommend to your boss if he wanted to know why he should encourage his employees to blog about work.

The authors put forward a convincing case that businesses large and small need to take blogging seriously. On the one hand, corporate blogging can provide excellent return on investment, particularly in terms of search engine rankings but also, less quantifiably, in shared community perceptions. On the other hand, ignoring the blogosphere or entering it without taking account of its culture risks injuring a company's credibility. A key point is that blogging, unlike traditional public relations, is as much or more about listening as it is about speaking.

The authors divide the book into three sections. The first provides a series of case studies exploring different aspects of corporate blogging. Scoble and Israel point to corporate (and national) culture as the major differentiator between companies which encourage blogging and those which do not. Some companies like Google and Apple have turned corporate secrecy into a competitive strategy. Others simply let the big boss blog, preferring not to allow the minions to express themselves in their own voices. Microsoft and Sun are among the forward-thinking corporations which recognize the public relations value of encouraging their employees to talk online about the products and ideas they care about. The second section gives very practical tips about how and how not to blog about business. The third section, which is the shortest, provides a broader perspective on the place of blogging among other emerging technologies and trends.

Robert Scoble did a tremendous job with Channel 9 while he was at Microsoft. His video interviews introduced me to the people building the technologies I use everyday. I now feel a kind of personal connection to Microsoft and its employees. This would never have happened through advertising and traditional public relations. It came as a result of letting employees speak publicly about what they are working on. Rather than thinking about the company as a `Borg,' I regard Microsoft as a collection of extremely interesting and creative individuals who also listen and respond to what others have to say about their products.

Naked Conversations is not a technical book about how to set up a blog. Rather, it's an introduction to the culture of blogging and how it contributes to business today. Clearly, anyone considering blogging about business will want to read this book first--not just to avoid getting `dooced'--but to gain the right perspective on the risks and returns of talking and listening to customers online.

              3 out of 5 stars Good ONE.......2007-03-28

I think the book is really good if you don't have read any book about blogs.
Just in this case, buy it.
Otherwise, just read blogs, do not need any book.
At least this is what I think.

              Best Regards,
