Book Description

The Book of Dragons

This title takes a comprehensive look at the dragons of the D&D world from a variety of perspectives. It includes information on playing dragons and dragon-like creatures, how to run a dragon in a fight, and how to both fight dragons and work with them as allies.

There are statistics on dragons of every type and at every age category, in addition to examples of lairs, hoards, and dragon minions. There are new rules, feats, spells, prestige classes, magic items, and other materials associated specifically with interaction with dragons including illustrated lairs and rules for creating treasure hoards. The book itself is designed in a prestige format, with heavy use of art throughout and constructed of premium materials.

To use this supplement, a Dungeon Master also needs the Player’s Handbook, Dungeon Master's Guide, and Monster Manual. A player needs only the Player's Handbook.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful Book with Flawed Content.......2007-04-11

Let me start this review by saying that this book is beautiful. The full color images throughout almost make it a coffee table book, and it is hard to NOT give it five stars just for those images.

But this book IS a roleplaying game supplement, so it has to be judged on more than just its pretty pictures.

Content in this book can be divided into three primary areas: General dragon information, player information, and DM-specific information.

- General Dragon Information. I truly have mixed feelings about this area. Dragon anatomy diagrams, descriptions of their senses, and the dragon language dictionary are all very interesting and worth an initial reading. Some of the other information, including history and religion, is disappointing - not only does it conflict with previously established sources, but it also doesn't fit with the "theories" that most people have about dragons (according to the Draconomicon, dragons die of old age, they worship strange gods, etc, etc..).

- Player Information. The sections of the book featuring player information truly shine. There are new feats for those that often deal with dragons, a good selection of new spells, intriguing new prestige classes, and numerous new magical items. The section on dragons being player characters, however, is too short and not particularly useful.

- DM Information. This is where the product once more falters. The new draconic monster section is all right, and the section on dragon feats / dragon prestige classes is also moderately interesting (though extremely limited in usefulness unless you are running a dragon-only campaign). The various additional rules and the sample NPC dragons weren't particularly captivating. The pantheon section and the dragon twilight section will not be accepted by many fans as those sections conflict with previously established content. Mongoose Publishing's "Slayer's Guide to Dragons" (written by Gary Gygax) contains better dragon rules and DM information, in my opinion, and should be considered if that is the only reason you are buying this book.

In conclusion: rating this book is extremely difficult, and depends on the desires of the consumer. On content alone, I would only give it 3 stars; when the incredible artwork is also factored in, it gets 4 to 4.5. For those that don't particularly like dragons or don't think they'll deal with them beyond one or two in an entire campaign, this product is a bit of an overkill - use the Monster Manual instead.

Side Note: Those interested in behind-the-scenes industry comments and barbs should check out the deity "Garyx" on page 33.

5 out of 5 stars good delivery and good quality.......2006-11-05

i am satisfied with the product and the delivery. Everything was good!

5 out of 5 stars Gorgeous and Flavorful.......2006-03-23

I absolutely love Dungeons and Dragons so please take my opinion with a grain of salt. I actually got this book for a friend, that doesn't even play DnD, because the pictures and information about dragons contained within are breathtaking. She is an artist and finds the descriptions of lairs, flight patterns, bone structure, growth data, and so much more to be indispensible whenever she wants to draw a flying lizard.

Of course I also benefit from her having it. I get to use the stat tables and diagrams to create the perfect dragon sessions whenever I need them. I have heard some people complain that dragons aren't used that much in their games and so this book is a waste of money. All I have to say to that is there is no more dangerous, interesting, diverse, powerful, or tricky enemy than a dragon. To not use them with care in a DnD campaign is to do your players a huge disservice. If you like to use Dragons in your campaigns get this book.
If you like to dream of dragons get this book.
If you have eyes... get this book.

3 out of 5 stars Very handy to introduce custom dragons and gear.......2006-03-15

This is a very good resource book with plenty of details given about the primary dragon races. The main (and really only) down side is that it wasn't pubilshed after the conversion to v3.5. Still a really good resourse, but can get pricey

5 out of 5 stars A Must Own!!!.......2006-02-22

I've debated over and over on the role Dragons would take in my campaign. Once I made the decision to increase the draconic feel of my campaign, it was a no brainer to pick this one up.

The anatomy section on the dragon was quite possibly the most interesting information I've ever read from WOTC. It really made the dragons feel less mythical and more real and tangible.

The monsters presented are a welcome addition to the ecology of my world. The Dragonkin are great baddies added to any low level campaign. The Fang Dragon, reprinted from the Faerun monster manual, is absoltely one of my most favorite evil dragons, a pure monster. The Draconic template is fastly becoming one of my most favorite templates in my arsenal.

However my most favorite section is the sample dragons. This section has helped me move the dragons to the pedestal they deserve. Too many campaigns reduce the dragon to a mere killing machine, and never really get under the skin of this wonderous race. This section reveals their motivations and trials, their tribulations and triumphs. I've spent many-a-night falling asleep to this section alone.

I couldn't have been happier with my decision to purchase the Draconomicon. This is the crown jewel of my collection. I am absoltely in love with this suppliment. There is even feats and other character options, so if your playing a half dragon or running a game with Dragons in it, this suppliment is a must own. And this guide isn't only for people who play DND, any fan of our gargantuan winged friends will enjoy this book. There is a little for everyone in this guide.

5 out of 5 stars It's called Dungeons and DRAGONS!!!.......2004-07-08

That's the name of the game and we wouldn't have it any other way!
This is the first Forgotten Realms Draconomicon accessory; the one that began the tradition of providing vital and in depth information concerning the powerful, magical creatures. Ranging from background history, to important dragon characters (NPC's), to the respective gods and pantheons, to instructions on how to preserve, cook and eat dragon meat, to which parts of a dragon can be used as spell components, and cross breading between the different types of dragons, to adventure hooks and actual adventures-like the GREAT adventure in Unther involving an ancient Blue Wyrm-which is included, this accessory has it all and more!
For the FR enthusiast, like myself, I also recommend the second, and latest (so far) FR Draconomicon accessory.
Moreover, for other FR references/adventures, I STRONGLY recommend: the Old Empires accessory on Chessenta, Mulhorand, and Unther, the Moonsea accessory, the Dreams of Red Wizards accessory on Thay, the Ruins of Myth Drannor Box Set, and the Ruins of Zhentil Keep Box Set (they are Second Edition AD&D, out of print and it will take a bit of searching, but it's well worth it). For updated editions of events see, the Third Edition Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting, which even though is quite expensive, is still very useful to all FR fans!
In short, if you don't have the original Draconomicon, GET IT! It might take a bit of searching to locate a copy, but it's well worth it!

    Book Description

On December 11, 1966, a mysterious assassin shot Henry Stockton to death, set his house on fire, and left the scene without a trace. A year later, when a woman was found brutally killed, shreds of evidence suggested a connection between the two murders.

In the Palliko-Stockton trial, prosecutor Vincent Bugliosi offered a brilliant summation that synthesized for the jury the many inferences and shades of meaning in the testimony, fitting all the pieces together in a mosaic of guilt. But will the jury be persuaded?

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Re-released, but story still engages.......2007-07-24

I've read everything Bugliosi has published that I'm aware of, and find him to be the very best non-fiction law/crime writer out there who I have encountered. He was also apparently a very good and thorough attorney, at least to hear him tell it. This story, like his Manson book, concerns a highly publicized trial on which he was the prosecuting attorney. In Hitchcockian fashion a man had been killed by an unknown stranger while the wife was 200 miles away with a perfect alibi. Insurance claims were modest and eventually paid, and probably nothing would have come of it had not one of the dismissed suspects suddenly become a widower himself, and the 21 year old missus hardly died of old age. Lots of courtroom drama, detective work, and personality studies ensue. Very hard to put down once you pick it up. Compelling without ever being gory, and informative without being pedantic. Very well written and a very unique story.

5 out of 5 stars Can't put this one down...............2007-05-21

Absolutely wonderful! I first read it in 1978, and have reread it at least a dozen times. (Something I rarely do) Well-written and constructed, and just as riveting as Helter Skelter. Five stars for Mr. Bugliosi!!

4 out of 5 stars Murder for Money.......2007-04-02

To my excitement, I recently found a pristine copy of the original hardcover edition of this book. I am a huge fan of Bugliosi's other work in "Helter Skelter" and "And the Sea Will Tell". This book is less known, but does not lack the sensationalism of the cases in Bugliosi's other books. Until the end of the book, it is well paced and creates suspense in the reader's mind. Bugliosi's decision to included his entire closing argument as the last 1/3 of the book drastically slow the pace.

Allan Palliko's crimes included attempted murder against his first wife, murdering a lover's husband, and murdering his second wife. While the first murder seems clear, the seemingly impossible time frame makes the second murder likely to have been committed by another. Yet when the deaths create income for Palliko, some eyebrows are raised. Could the prosecution gain a conviction despite a lack of physical evidence? The circumstantial evidence and motive of insurance money seem to point in the direction of Palliko's responsibility. Yet the unpredictability of a "jury of your peers" makes the reader wonder if the unlikely conviction is possible.

The book is slowed to a crawl when Bugliosi decided to include his entire closing argument. While the argument was well done, Bugliosi could have better summarized it for the purposes of this book. With the exception of this flaw, "Till Death Us Do Part" is another outstanding read by Vincent Bugliosi.

    5 out of 5 stars Vince's Book.......2007-01-20

I just started reading this book and so far I haven't been able to put it down just like all his rest so he has not disappointed me there. I just read And The Sea Will Tell and that was a fabulous book also. The dealer I got this book from was great, I got the book in record time. I would recommend reading this book if you enjoy true crime and legal stuff

5 out of 5 stars Want to know how low a person can go?.......2006-09-12

Neither did I, but if you enjoy seeing someone squirm as he gets caught lying under cross examination, you'll like this. The crimes are sickening. Mr. Bugliosi includes a big helping of law for the layman --very interesting stuff! The murderers were actually prosecuted on circumstantial evidence.

    Book Description

Every day six people in the United States are murdered by spouses or intimate partners. Society is captivated and startled by stories of these killers, leading people to wonder how seemingly normal and happy people manage to go over the edge. In Till Death Do Us Part, noted psychotherapist Dr. Robi Ludwig, along with journalist Matt Birkbeck, presents the psychological profiles of notorious killer spouses -- from Scott Peterson and Clara Harris to Rabbi Fred Neulander and Betty Broderick. Dr. Ludwig reveals the ten killer personality types and defines them in detail with examples from high-profile cases and in-depth analyses of the motivations behind the murders.

Gripping and insightful, Till Death Do Us Part explores a phenomenon that many spouses can't help but think about -- shedding light on the very notion of "happily ever after."

    Download Description

"Every day six people in the United States are murdered by spouses or intimate partners. The stories of killer spouses tend to captivate us, as they beg the question of how so many seemingly normal and happy people manage to go over the edge. Indeed, every relationship presents ""extreme moments"" where scary feelings surface, yet what happens when those feelings turn to action? With gripping stories and probing insight, authors Ludwig and Birkbeck examine the concept of peaceful versus violent resolution and why certain spouses believe murder is the best and only response. In an age when spousal murder is headline news, Till Death Do Us Part explores a phenomenon that many spouses can't help but think about at some point in their relationships -- which sheds light on the very notion of "happily ever after."

Plan on finishing this book once you start reading it. Not only are you given a factual account of the crime, you are also presented with the psychological analysis for the motivation. Each chapter chronicles a different psychosis, providing the reader with a clinical view of the criminal's state of mind.

    Incredibly insightful and compelling.

3 out of 5 stars Wait till this one hits the Clearance racks, here's the lowdown on this:.......2007-03-21

If you are a True Crime fan, then you MAY want to buy this book but you should know something about what this book contains first, as well as the fact that the title is a bit misleading. This book isn't ONLY about the Mind of the Killer Spouse but a look at the pros and cons of love and marriage as well. If you are looking only for True Crime stories, you'll have to read a lot of theory and research along the way, much of it about marriage and why people get married, etc.
The first chapter is particularly heavy on the marriage research aspect of things, including a section about why people marry in the first place, along with such depressing details as the fact that a huge percentage of men and women (even those without murder in their hearts) are unfaithful. You have to get through that before you really start to get to specific cases of spousal murder. It is pretty dry stuff, unless you are MOSTLY interested in research about marriage.
If that doesn't dissuade you and you are willing to read about various theories in between the accounts of the various crimes, this might be worth a browse for you. But some of these cases HAVE been covered in detail before, including the one of Pamela Smart, a media services worker at school who got her much younger 15 year old lover to agree to be a hit man and murder her husband.
If you are a true crime reader, you may already be familiar with this case and others in the book. I think the Pamela Smart case was actually covered much better in the book To Die For (although it is a fictionalized version of the case) as well as the movie by the same name (starring Nicole Kidman in a tour de force performance).
In my opinion, this author needed either a better editor, proofreader or writer friend to help get rid of the drier material and hone in on the main points and focus onn the actual cases. I found this to be a pretty dull read - and that is saying a lot for a book which SHOULD be inherently pretty exciting and interesting, simply because of the subject matter. True Crime is a popular subject....but you, the reader, can do better than this one.

    5 out of 5 stars Outstanding work!.......2007-03-10

Robi Ludwig has written a fantastic book for her audience and others who may want to get a high level and engaging view of stories that captivate international audiences. A fast read, this book reviews more than a dozen cases of spousal murder that have happened in recent history and discusses the psychological underpinnings that lead to this sort of marital termination. Ludwig reviews murder cases with more depth than a typical newspaper expose' or magazine article but does not become suffocatingly clinical.

Building on her early history of work with every day americans as a social worker and her post PHD relationship counseling practice in Manhattan, Dr. Ludwig interviewed and got first hand knowledge of many of the people discussed in her book. Only by seeing the extremes of what mental or sociopathic illness can do to relationships can we diagnose the inflection points and unhealthy relationship practices that lead to familial and societal breakdown.

Like some of the reviewers here, I also have several degrees from Ivy League institutions and am the son of a psychiatric nurse. I found her academic treatment of the topic for introductory purposes, EXCELLENT!

1 out of 5 stars Shallow and badly in need of a proof reader.......2007-01-06

I did buy this book a while back at Barnes and Noble. It is perfect for those who read at lower than 8th grade level, but for the rest of us, it's an insult. I wish I could sell it back. I found it extremely shallow and not very well proof-read. I started recording the errors after coming across several before page 70. Now, you might think that a few grammatical errors in the first 70 pages is not too much and I guess it wouldn't be if the errors had not been so easy to catch. So anyway, I started recording them after page 70 and on page 75, halfway down, there reads, "A sociopath is someone who habitually and disobeys social norms and fails to learn..." What's with that? "...someone who habitually AND disobeys..."??? The "and" is out of place. On page 74, did they mean to say "...was sentenced to sixty years TO life in prison."? One last one, page 153, 2nd paragraph, "Susan's sister testified that she had intervened during one of the couple's ARGUMENT,..." I think it should be "...one of the couple's ARGUMENTS." With an "s" at the end. Shouldn't it?
So anyway, those are just a few of the ones I picked out. They wouldn't have been so bad had the book not been so shallow.

4 out of 5 stars For what it is, it's useful..........2006-11-09

Wow. Reading the first 17 reviews of this book indicates that Dr. Ludwig has touched quite a nerve. There is a review by a friend of one of the spouse killers profiled, and one by a near-victim of a spouse killer. I have been a domestic violence social worker/counselor for 23 years, and it seems to me, that for a "popular" treatment of the problem, Ludwig hasn't done a bad job. Men kill their wives and ex-wives, girlfriends and exes, in only slightly greater numbers than women kill their male partners, or pay someone else to kill them, or seduce a new lover into killing them. Mental illness, greed, lust, revenge, substance abuse, etc. are not exclusive woes for one gender only. Dr. Ludwig and her co-writer suggest that there are ten prime motives for such murders, with overlapping features in many cases. That seems to fit my professional experience, too. The only thing I did not like about the book is that it needed an editor who could help the authors improve their sentence constructions, and a proofreader who might have caught the half-dozen typos that made it between hard-covers. Those flaws, however, are not uncommon in these days of computerization being trusted to catch spelling or grammatical errors. Computers can't supply the common sense communication decisions that a skilled human editor or proof-reader might. Dr. Ludwig, to judge by her dust jacket photo, is beautiful as well as smart, and it's no wonder she shows up on TV programs with Nancy Grace and Larry King. The book seems aimed at those viewers, and in that sense, it is a success. It is a beginning look at a very complex and tragic dynamic, not the solution, nor the scientific explanation. Get it from the library instead of paying for it, if you don't have a personal or professional interest in the topic. It is terrible that marriage is life-threatening when it goes wrong, wonderful and life-enriching only when it goes well. But it's the truth.

    Book Description

A proven plan that breaks the conflict cycle, this book is "mandatory reading for every couple that wants to build lasting love"(John Bradshaw).

When fighting breaks out between a husband and wife, the husband's typical reaction is to withdraw, either emotionally or physically. When he does, his wife often becomes more frustrated and angry, which in turn causes the husband to withdraw even more. The fighting escalates with each subsequent outbreak. But it doesn't have to. During her fifteen years of clinical and laboratory research, couples therapist Jamie Turndorf, Ph.D., has developed a proven program that breaks the conflict cycle for ninety percent of the couples who use it. She advises couples to start with a series of cool-down steps and to move on to resolution exercises that will allow them to address difficult issues and subjects in a nonadversarial manner.

5 out of 5 stars Maximum help with conflict resolution!.......2000-06-28

I just finished devouring this book. Absolutely great stuff. This is the help I needed twenty years ago. Duh! Now I get it! My marriage of 30 years is over BUT maybe this can help me save a one year old relationship that has foundered due to my lack of "conflict resolution" skills. I'm going to re-read this book then do my best to apply what I've learned. (Then I'll read it again).

4 out of 5 stars Fight No More.......2000-04-27

Most "professionals" try to make fighting acceptable in relationships and I think that is to justify their own weaknesses. This book makes a good case that fighting is indeed not healthy, but can cause massive destruction in a relationship. I've never met any couple who characterizes their relationships as "blissful" if they are frequent fighters. I admire Michael Webb, author of The RoMANtic's Guide. He is one of the few professionals who say fighting is harmful but he also gives wonderful ways to fill your relationship with love instead.

5 out of 5 stars Most Enjoyable Self Help Book.......2000-03-25

This self help book is based on the theory that arguments lead to flight-fight behavior in men. Men then become withdrawn and removed. Dr. Turndorf provides suggestions to cool down the "climate" so that they can reapproach each other. This book is packed with humerous anecdotes and case examples. Its a fun read even if you don"t have marital conflict.

4 out of 5 stars Self-help book that shows how to stop marital war.......2000-01-03

This self-help book centers on Dr. Turndoff's twelve-step method to resolve marital conflict before it turns ugly, abusive, and over. The author AKA Dr. Love bases her conflict resolution methodology on research that has led her to conclude, "fighting creates a chemical imbalance in men" that leads to more aggressive and negative behavior. This book provides ways to end or at least reduce the cycle of marital warfare that spirals into divorce, hatred, and often time's leads to physical and mental abuse.

Though the steps seem obvious, it is helpful to see them written in a simple anecdotal manner that most adults can easily follow. The claim of 90% solution using this technique needs proper perspective, as the users will not have Dr. Love to personally guide them. It seems most likely that most relationships spiraling out of control need a third party arbitrator like Dr. Love to help the couple attain consensus rather than conflict. However, this book might prove beneficial to those partnerships not quite down the escalator trying to avoid the ride to marital hell.

5 out of 5 stars All Around Awesome.......2006-07-27

I picked up this book at my local bookstore because i absolutely adore Lurlene McDaniel's books. They are so heartwrenching and tug at your heart strings. This book was especially great. I read it in two days and could not put it down. i recently bought her 2nd part to the novel. This book is absolutely incredible and if youre into those heart-breaking-loving-romantic stories this is the book for you. Anyone can relate to this story no matter what. Not only is this a great read but its educational.i learned a lot about CF and how it effects people. PICK THIS BOOK UP TODAY!

5 out of 5 stars it was so hearbreaking.......2005-11-28

I loved this book! I still do love this book! I am so happy that I chose this book randomly off the bookshelf at the book store, because if I hadn't then I wouldn't have gotten to read "Till Death Do Us Part".

April's trying not think of why she might really be in the hospital agian. She's 17, and hasn't been in the hospital since she was 5, and had a brain tumor. She's been having terrible headaches lately though, and she fainted in class. April is desperatly hoping that the headaches arne't related to the brian tumor she had 12 years ago. Her worst nightmare comes true though. The tumor's back. Only this time, they can't just surjically remove it. It's too close to her brain. Radiations her only hope.

April can't believe it. When she tell her popular soccer playing boyfriend, Chriss, he doesn't know how to handle it. Her best friend, Katie, is trying, but it's hard to know how to act.

The only good part abaout being in the hospital is Mark. Mark has CF, and has problems breathing. His illnes is terminal, and he will die. He falls in love with April though. At first April's afraid to date him, because he's sick, but her makes her feel more special than anyone in the world.

April begins to fall in love with Mark. He always knows how to cheer her up, and truly wants to be with her. She loves going to the track to watch him race cars, his hobby. It's bad for his CF, but April knows that it's one of the few ways he can control his life. She also loves going to their favorite Italian restaurant, and just being with him.

When Mark asks April to marry him, she says yes. She never dreamed that the wedding would never happen. How could she have known that there would be a racing car accident? Thar Mark would wind up in the hospital.

This book was so sad, and I just wanted to bawl my eyes out. I can only say one thing. DON'T READ THE SEQUEL. In my opinion, it absolutely ruins the wanderful story that Lurlene McDaniel has writen.

5 out of 5 stars A book of my experience.......2004-08-31

As the widow of a man with cystic fibrosis I can relate to this book as if it was my own. I was amazed at the reality used in this book and how true it can be to the actual feelings that a person feels in this situation. When my husband asked me to marry him at age 23 (me being 19) I agreed thinking that we would have many happy years together. However after being married exactly one year to the date his CF worsened and he passed away after 1 year, 6 months of marriage. He left behind a wife and a beautiful son that he was never able to meet.

5 out of 5 stars This was an amazing book.......2004-04-30

It was so sad that in the end i cried. I know what its like to loose someone close to my heart and it made i easier to relate to this book. The book kept me wanting to know what would happen to April and Mark. It showed me that it's just as hard fo other people to go through hard times.

    5 out of 5 stars GREAT!.......2004-04-06

This was a great book. Speaking as a teenager, this book is great. It is a romantic, yet sad book, but you cannot put it down once you start! It is a GREAT book.
