4 out of 5 stars Helpful but not necessary.......2006-12-01

Strategy Guides of fighting games are helpful, but not necessary. You can actually look online for guides and walkthroughs written by fellow fans and get more satisfaction. Some of the more grand, epic RPGs practically make it necessary to have a Strategy Guide in order to unlock their best features (Xenosaga and Final Fantasy are guilty of this). Those games, with their captivating but elaborate plot, will be difficult to play without a good quality strategy guide. However, a fighting game is fairly straightforward. Fight enough battles, spend countless hours in Practice Mode, memorize the Command List for your favored character, and you will unlock all of the features.

This is a good guide to have for people who like to spend many hours per week playing Soul Calibur 2. It serves as a handy referrence to the needed inputs for each character move. For example, some of the characters have a very long string of inputs that you need to enter to execute their most damaging commands. Ivy is the prime example. In order to perform her best attack, Summon Suffering, the player is required to enter a string of commands within a short period of time. Not only that, but Ivy has to be standing in a particular location, relative to the enemy. It's easy to forget the commands. And having a handy strategy guide can help you find the answer without having to boot up your computer and go to the internet just to look it up.

Think of a strategy guide as a luxury item. It's a very handy referrence material that can answer your questions without the inconvenience of having to browse the internet while you're in the middle of your precious gaming time.

5 out of 5 stars A cut above other strategy guides.......2004-03-13

First off, note that this is a "Fighter's Guide", not a "Strategy Guide." It includes a section on Weapon Master Mode, mostly to tell you about the weapons. It includes a section on the game features, mostly to tell you about how they affect the characters. The only reason to buy this guide is because of the quality analysis it offers in the character sections. Strengths, Weaknesses, effective tactics, useful combos, and most of the moves that were left out of the official movelist. However, the guide is obviously one author's opinion, and while Lummis has obviously played the game against good competition and knows advice for each character's strengths and weaknesses, he's not as brutal about abusable moves or difficult characters as he could be.

As a case study, the guide recommends forward,A,A,A as a good move for Kilik to use when expecting a counter hit, and lists several reasons why this is so. It also includes a handy picture in case you weren't sure which move forward,A was. In the movelist, it includes forward,A,A:B+K, a superior followup on counter hit which is not in the in-game movelist, but does not note that it is a Just Frame attack requiring precise timing. Neither movelist includes forward,A,A:A+B+K, an alternative non-offensive followup to the move. In this case, as in many others throughout the guide, Lummis offers detailed information on how to improve your Soul Calibur game for players who aren't used to thinking critically about their character, and improves upon the game's training modes, but is not completely exhaustive.

If you're a beginning or intermediate player struggling to beat your button-mashing friends and the master of your local arcade, this guide is great. It provides a lot more information than a simple movelist, and the vast majority of it is quality information. However, don't hesitate to consult other sources.

4 out of 5 stars Not a bad book but it falls short at times........2004-03-10

The Soul Calibur 2 Official Fighters Guide is a great "hintbook" but that doesn't neccessarily mean it's a "Strategy Guide". Which isn't bad. The guide is after all, a "Fighter's" guide and therefore it helps you to master the combat of Soul Calibur 2 but not the game itself.

To begin, the game REALLY helps out for someone who isn't familiar with fighters or the Soul Calibur franchise for that matter. It helps you learn all the basics quite well.

Each character has a combo's list and tips on how to use them. Detailing their strentghs and weaknesses and even tells you for some of them which characters are good to match against others. It doesn't mention characters to use all the time, but you get the general idea of who should match who.

I also like that when reading this guide, its as if it's speaking to you. Therefore, it really is a good reference. Should you be a master at SCII then it probably won't matter, but let's just assume you actually got the guide to help you improve your game. A master player of Soul Calibur shouldn't need to buy this guide unless you're a collector.

I do have a couple of gripes. The guide doesn't go in-depth on the many modes the game has. The Weapon Master Mode does a great job detailing what it is... but how do I go about it?

Also, the fact that the combo guide and such is taken straight from the in-game is sad. It DOES tell you combos that aren't in the game itself at least. There's a moves list for all the characters as well.

My last gripe is actually a big one. I LOVE that they have every character but for three specific characters (Assassin, Berserker and Lizardman) they give you a command list but they don't give you the strentghs and weaknesses of these characters. It's as if when they got down to those three they got lazy.

A list of all the weapons for every charater is included as well as an art gallery.

In short, where the guide fails to please is mostly at the fact that it's mostly a "Character" guide. It's great to learn about the games basics but if you want to master the game itself the guide will only get you halfway there.

On the positive side
+Covers every character
+Strentghs and Weaknesses detailed
+A great leg up for those wanting to improve their game in combat.
+The text speaks to you
+The Game Basics are great for those new to fighting games and Soul Calibur

The Bad
-It is, sadly, only a "Fighters" guide and not a full blown "Strategy Guide"
-Assassin, Berserker and Lizardman aren't detailed enough
-Not going to help you master the game

4 out of 5 stars Good book.......2003-10-22

This Fighter's Guide is a pretty good source for all the noobies out there. If your sick of button mashing your way thru battles and jamming random buttons, this book is definately for you! It helped me defeat this Mexican dude who kept using Raphael's Queen's Guard and kept doing the same moves over and over again.
Great book!!

5 out of 5 stars The Magnificent Fighter's Guide.......2003-10-14

This guide had great information on players, for instance their strenghts and weaknesses. They even have a detailed character bio for each. The weapon gallery is also magnificent. I've already developed skills for Ivy's Alurane. Plus I've beaten Weapon Master Mode. You must get this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

3 out of 5 stars Beautiful presentation, inconsistent content........2007-05-24

This guide is beautifully set out, and a must-have for Soul Calibur fans who like to ogle the gorgeous characters (without leaving unsightly smears on their screens). The summaries of character strengths and weaknesses are fun to nod along to and murmur sounds of agreement. Unfortunately, there's no updated character biography, so it feels incomplete, but the setting out of main moves for each character is a nice feature. My main quibble with this guide is the stats page for the weapons. It's an unwieldly fold-out page, and the stats provided are inconsistent, and in most cases non-existent. The bonus soundtrack CD is quite decent, and a good alternative to ordering a much more expensive import over the net.

3 out of 5 stars A few small aspects keep it from being perfect.......2006-01-15

I bought this guide expecting information on Tales of Souls, i.e. the different paths, what story scenes each path will unlock, how to get to Night Terror and tips on how to beat him.

It doesn't give any of that.

What it does offer some in depth information on the main and bonus characters and offers the reader some tips for Chronicles of the Sword. These are useful but primarily they aren't what I was looking for.

I also noticed a few misprints with regards to the fighting styles custom characters can use. For example for Samurai it said Katana, blank, Sickle. The third one is Katana and Shuriken. I also noticed a few other misprints, like saying a Knight would use Rapier and Shield, and I'm pretty sure I also saw it say a class uses a weapon which they don't actually use. But in the long run the tips it does offer are useful. The bonus CD is also a nice touch, especially if you like any of the game's music.

If you're primarily looking for a guide that can help you master the characters, then go for this. However if you're primarily looking for Tales of Souls information I suggest looking elsewhere.

2 out of 5 stars An important note about the included soundtrack CD..........2005-11-29

If you're buying this special edition guide for the included soundtrack CD, you might be disappointed. It is ABRIDGED. Only the most common songs heard in the game are included - most of the less common songs heard in Chronicles of the Sword and Tales of Souls are missing. In fact, the full version of this soundtrack (you can have it shipped from Japan - it's catalog number is VIZL-158) is 3 CDs long! In other words, you're only getting a third of the music in the game. Unfortunately, some of my favorite music is cut, so I'll be paying the 3500 yen for the full version.

Some of the songs on the CD are themselves cut short. For instance, the song "Forsaken Sanctuary" (the one that plays in the cathedral when Nightmare and Siegried are fighting) is cut short to 1:33. If you listen to the song in the game, you'll notice that it goes much longer.

As for the guide itself, I agree with the other reviewer who said that it's basically pointless. I never buy game guides (other than this one since it comes with a soundtrack) because, as said already, all the info in the guide can be found in the game.

So, all in all, I'd say that this is not worth your money. If you want the music, Google "VIZL-158" and buy that album.

2 out of 5 stars All That's Here You Can Find In the Game.......2005-11-08

Strategy guides for modern fighting games are pointless, I think, as most of the games have detailed move lists available at the pause menu, as well as practice modes where you can perfect the moves and find out which ones you like. Most of these guides offer only detailed listings of character biographies (which have no value), move listings, and recommended moves.

Soul Calibur III's guide isn't much different, except for the unlockables. There are quite a lot of unlockable features and items in this game, and finding them can be difficult, especially all the items, weapons, and armor. This guide tells you how to find every item.

It also has a small section on one of the game modes, Chronicles of the Sword, detailing the levels and enemies in this mode. While simply playing the level once will reveal what the level entails, some levels are difficult and the strategy offered for each separate level can help some. Problem is, the section barely covers seven pages and half of that is tutorial.

I'd recommend this strategy guide for those two reasons above (unlockables listings and Chronicles of the Sword), though I'd also recommend not buying this guide at all as it's very expensive and adds little to the actual game play that trial and error couldn't add itself.

5 out of 5 stars In depth look into Soul Calibur III.......2005-11-04

This review is for the normal version of this guide, I believe the only difference is that the limited edition comes with a soundtrack CD (and the covers are different).

This thick guide starts off by explaining the basics of the game, things like moving around, guarding, and different types of attacks. It then goes into more detail regarding
more advanced techniques likes impact guard, guard breaking and delayed attacks. Reading through these gives you a good sense of the options available to your fighter. The guide also covers the different game modes and explains a bit about each. One gripe I do have though is that while they cover the Chronicles of the Sword mode, they don't really give too much stragetic advice or recommend which types of fighters to use. Still, that section is informative enough.

The meat of this guide comes with the fighter profiles. Filled with colorful pictures and easy to read text thanks to a nice, organized layout the guide proceeds to list all of the moves for each fighter broken down by type. A nice explanation of how the fighter performs at different ranges is very helpful as is an overall summary which gives the player a good view of how to use that specific fighter. If that wasn't enough they also provide a section dedicated to favorite/best moves to use with each fighter. Very handy.

The guide also covers all of the unlockable characters as well although not in as much detail. The remainder of the guide is dedicated to the complete shop lists as well as prices and conditions to unlock. There is a complete unlockable section dedicted to all of the games secrets as well. Included is a nice foldout map which shows all of the main characters and their weapons with descriptions of different properties. Another small gripe is that I was hoping that they might include pictures of the different types of armor, but again that can be viewed in the game. Now one ommission that I could not find was that the guide did not lay out all of the possible pathways for the Tales of the Sword mode. Example being, the guide mentions to unlock Hwang you must defeat him in the Tales of the Sword mode but it doesn't specify how to actually go about facing him. Not a major deal but still would have been nice.

Overall, it's a great guide with plenty of useful information to help you with the game.

The Strategy Guide basically consists mostly of profiles for each of the main characters. Included in these profiles are some rather trivial piece of personal information about each of the characters as well as the recommended attacks to use with that particular character. However, I believe the guide doesn't give you enough help when it comes to unlocking features of the game. To unlock these features, certain conditions have to be met. For the most part, most of these features are listed with the conditions needed to unlock them. However, I think the guide should have done a better job of explaining what you need to do in order to unlock certain events, armor types, and weapons.

This guide is somewhat useful. The artwork is very attractive. And would be worthwhile purchase for those who collect them. However, there are many other sources of information online that you could go to if all you need is help with the game.

5 out of 5 stars SUOL CALIBUR III - IS THE BEST OF ALL SOUL CALIBURS.......2006-10-14

I loved this guide. That is such a complete guide. The details of the characters are incredibles and the photos... GREAT.I recommend this for everybody.

4 out of 5 stars Its Alright.......2006-03-06

I own a good amount of strategy guides and this one seems to be just another run of the mill strategy guide. It gives descriptions of each characters most efficient range to be in, it also gives descriptions of what each chracters moves do like damage and what level they hit at, it gives the price of each item in the Shop mode and how to make the availible in Shop mode, and there is a nice poster with a picture of each character with all the weapons on it with the description of each attribute of each weapon. But this guide doesnt give you a recommended character to fight or not fight against for each character. But this guide is still very convenient to have around and that is the pupose for a startegy guide in my opinion, convenients.

5 out of 5 stars Spend less time trying to figure out the game, and more time enjoying it.......2005-10-29

This game guide is about as thorough as they come. The game's fighting mechanics and strategies are covered in detail, as are the various game modes, characters, weapons, and various unlockable content. Everything is extremely well organized, making it easy to quickly locate the information you want. The artwork and general layout of the book also looks great.

The guide has been an invaluable reference in learning how to use each fighter effectively. In addition to a complete list of the moves for each fighter and the damage they cause, there are suggestions for the best combos to use, and general strategies for using each fighter along with specific recommendations for fighting at short, medium, and long range.

As deep as the fighting system in Soul Calibur 3 is (minutes to learn, months to master), a guide like this is essential for getting up to speed quickly, and the more quickly you can learn to use each fighter effectively the more enjoyable the game is.

If you get the game, get this guide. You'll be glad you did.

3 out of 5 stars Pros and Cons.......2001-08-11

The bottom line with this particular guide is: "How experienced are you?"

If you're new to the game, you will probably want this. If you've been playing for around six months to a year, you won't get much of anything out of it.

What You Get: This guide is designed perhaps entirely for the Dreamcast console as opposed to the arcade version. It is full-color, attractive and accurate. It provides the basics for the system, a little on strategy, and complete moves lists for all characters. But that's about it.

In comparison to the Tekken 3 guide by Prima, however, you will be left with a sense of loss. There is no data on fighting against specific opponents. The strategy offered in this guide is skimpy. You will find similar data for the arcade version at the official site. Go there and you'll have a pretty good idea of what this book will have.

Overall, this guide is indeed a lazy effort, and will prove useless against even most intermediate opponents. But if you're just getting started, you may want to pay its reasonable price.

1 out of 5 stars Like thicker instruction books?.......2000-08-08

This is a rather amazing strategy guide. Not only is there no strategy aside from limited advice on how to play the characters but the bulk of the text was cut and pasted straight from Namco's own documentation on the game! If you want the moves listed out in a bound and portable format, there's your only reason for buying this guide. You won't improve your game with this guide nor will you learn anything that doesn't ship with the game as it is. This is a very lazy effort at producing a strategy guide. Aren't they supposed to help you with game strategy?

        3 out of 5 stars I be confused.......2000-07-10

Soul caliber is a very straight forward game. Kill things with your big old sword. You're bad you're good. You fight dirty when you bad.You with me? Didn't think so. To make a long story short, I bought the guide because was a dead up stumped. WHAT NEXT! I would scream at the TV screen. It was a dark period in my life. I bought the guide, things looked up. This guide could make Allundra look simple. MAN O MAN and I told all my friends I had no help. That is exactly why this must remain confidential! HAHAH. Maps and strategy guide are a must if you plan on getting throught this game with out pulling your hair out. That about as detailed as I want to get (don't want to give anything away!) To my homies who play, how funny was the part with the monkey! Don't worry, you'll see. MORE FUN THAN D & D!

        3 out of 5 stars A not-bad book, but overly simple.......2000-03-05

Soul Calibur is the hottest fighting game on the market today, and it's also one of the hardest to master. You need a strategy guide! Fortunately, the ubiquitous Prima guides are out and about, and they've released one for Soul Calibur.

As far as guides go, it's not bad. There are many pictures, and all of the moves are displayed, but the emphasis here seems to be on style over substance. The book is pretty to look at, sure, but the strategies sound like they are coming from an amateur and, quite frankly, could have been better. Sure, they're great for players just starting the game, but experts want more. Overall, though, a worthy purchase for improving your game.

4 out of 5 stars You Will Need this Book to Master Soul Calibur.......1999-12-07

If you are a great fan of Soul Blade and Soul Calibur, you will need this book to show you the techniques to beat the living crap out of your opponent. It provides the strength and weakness of each character and the various combo that charcter has. It will be awhile before you become a true master. So many moves.... so many reading to do...ugh! But well worth it if you want to master the ways of the Soul Calibur! This is my bible to Soul Calibur!

4 out of 5 stars Useful for IO Psyc class.......2007-09-22

Got the book for my Industrial Organizational Psychology class. It's a pretty interesting read. I recommend it to anyone looking to study IO Psyc.

3 out of 5 stars Over The Top View of Supposed Perfection.......2007-04-27

I got about halfway through this book and couldn't stand the back slapping tummy rubbing view of perfection portrayed by the author. I lent the book to a colleague who has worked at Southwest and they agreed. Perhaps if you hadn't worked in the game it would be a better book. problem is Southwest probably deserves a better book because they are a great success story - just don't have an author crow so hard about it and detract from the true story. I rate the book three stars (possible generous) simply because I couldn't bear to read it all. For the money I recommend 'Hard Landing' by Petzinger as far more worthwhile ('From Worst to First' is also better).

3 out of 5 stars A little heavy on the chest beating.......2007-01-30

The first part of the Audio CD was a turn-off. The title begins by trumpeting the virtues of Southwest. Not only was that not necessary, it gets old very quickly. Once that is over, the discussion is quite a bit more interesting. The philosophy that Southwest operates under is presented in a "top ten list" format. In addition, the author discusses how each of the ten items is necessary for the formula to work, and thus why many companies have failed to improve when trying to use only some of Southwest's techniques.

I would recommend this title only after reading other business titles. Two in particular are "From Good to Great" by Jim Collins and "First, Break all the Rules" / "Now, Discover your Strengths" by Marcus Buckingham. I feel this book doesn't stand well by itself; rather it is a case study of these two works, and probably a few others I haven't read yet.

I recommend the former because Jim Collins notes long term successful businesses all figure out their key performance metric and subordinate all business processes to it. The first part of "The Southwest Airlines Way" speaks right to this point. Aircraft turn around is Southwest Airline's key metric, they do it better than their competitors, and all of the 10 points support minimizing the metric.

The latter references by Buckingham theorize that people's talents are fixed, not learned. Thus, Buckingham recommends hire for the talents you need, as it is a waste of resources to try and train the untalented. This goes hand-in-hand with Southwest Airlines interviewing for, and only accepting, applicants with natural aptitude in people skills. Southwest Airlines ten points to success follow many of Buckingham's observations (recommendations) on how to successfully manage employee talent.

5 out of 5 stars The Southwest Airlines Way.......2006-11-10

This is a great book on the study of Organizational Behavior. It provides great examples and keys elements to running a successful company. As a college student, this book has been invaluable as a source of information for various classes. I highly recommend this book to any student of Human Resource Management or Organizational Behavior.

4 out of 5 stars High performance relationships - the key to Southwests success.......2006-04-02

The book is about how although Leadership, culture, strategy and co-ordination have been critical for SW's amazing performance uptill now the hidden factor is the high performance relationships that permeate the organisation. One person working in isolation does not deliver customer satisfaction. Only a group of people working as a single unit with no friction, hidden agendas or dysfucntional incentives can do that. Above all a group of people with outstanding relationships.

Some of the key practices at SW expanded in the book are:
        1. Lead with credibility and caring
        2. Invest in frontline leadership (high supervisory staffing levels)
        3. Hire and train for relational competence
        4. Use conflicts to build relationships
        5. Bridge the work/family divide by bringing family into the organisation
        6. Create boundary spanners (people at the edges of two divisions who help co-ordinate between them)
        7. Avoid finger pointing - measure performance broadly
        8. Keep jobs flexible at the boundaries
        9. Make unions your partners, not adversaries
        10. Build relationships with your suppliers

One interesting similarity between the Toyota way principles and the South West way I noted was that they both believe in long term consistent profit growth (organic if possible) and they believe in not laying off people during hard times. I think this contrasted a little bit with Jack Welch's approach of faster growth through acquisition where appropriate and his belief that you should regularly ask the bottom performers to leave the company to get rid of the deadwood. The other similarity between Toyota and SW was their willingness to get in bed with their suppliers and their belief that culture was everything.
