A great overview of the US Naval history.......2001-10-10
I orginally read the first edition of this book when it came out in 1992. It was at the time a evelation for me, and the source of my now great love for Naval History. I owe Stephen Howarth a debt of thanks.
I recently picked up a copy of this edition. It has been extended from 1991 (where the previous edition ended) and now includes "The Gulf War" and a few other events up to 1998. There may have been a few other changes that I am not aware of.
I've read quite a few one book histories of the US Navy, ranging from books published in the 1920's (and actually used at Anapolis) to books that have been published in the past few years. Howarth's "To Shining Sea stands among the best of them, simply for its informative and enteratining style.
Howarth treats his subject not only with the eye of a scholar, but also with the eye of a storyteller, while at the same time, making interesting and intelligent observations about his subject. What results is a book that is entertaining and informative at the same time. His own enthusiasm for his subject is infectious as one reads it.
Most interesting about this book is that Howarth examines the US Navy, not from an American's eyes, but those of an Briton. Interspiced throughout the book are accounts of what the sentaments in England were towards the United States and it's tiny Navy. The addition is illuminating and welcome.
If you have a passing interest in the US Navy and it's history, or simply want to get your feet wet in the subject, "To Shining Sea" is well worth the read.

If you have been searching for a starting point for a study of the US Navy, this is it. Stephen Howarth presents a concise, balanced, one-volume history of the US Navy from its inception (George Washington: " . . . without a decisive naval force we can do nothing definitive -- and with it, everything honorable and glorious."), through magnificent achievements, shameful decline and neglects, up to the Persian Gulf War. Some surprises (John Paul Jones was a rather disagreeable character -- at least from the British perspective), hints of sadness (when the mantle of naval supremecy was passed to the US from Great Britain), this was for me an amazingly "quick read", even though some may consider 574 pages rather lengthy. This work should be required reading in history courses everywhere, from Anapolis to colleges and universities throughout the nation. ( It probably would not be a waste of time for anyone who aspires to be President of the US. How many times must the navy be cut and slashed for our nation to learn of its importance to our national security? " . . . when the next war comes we will need the finest army and air force in the world, BECAUSE WITH A GREATLY WEAKENED NAVY . . . THE FIGHTING WILL BE ON OUR OWN SHORES.")

A Great Book by a Great Teacher.......2000-04-25
I had the privilege of reading Prof McClintock's book BEFORE I realized she was a professor at my school, and I am really glad to have had access to both. The book was really indepth, and Cynthia was able to get awesome interviews that very few other people have ever gotten.
Excellent research and analysis........2000-03-10
This is one of the finer books I have read on insurgent organizations and their backgrounds/motivations. Cynthia McClintock concentrates on comparing and contrasting these two groups, along with addressing similar groups, to give the reader a deeper understanding of an insurgency. The FMLN is now part of the political process, as they wished to be (as brought out in the book), in El Salvador. However, Sendero Luminoso is still trying to overthrow the Peruvian government without wishing to be a part of the process (also brought out in the book). This book, to include its tremendous bibliography, is an excellent reference resource.

Everyone, regardless of whether they were "for" or "against" the Vietnam War should READ THIS BOOK! It gives an unflinching, brutal and grim portrayal of ground combat by the men (specifically U.S. Marines) who know it best because they were there, they experienced it, and they lived to tell others about it. It shows what heroism and duty to country really are and it shows by the examples of these men. I've read many, many books, both fiction and non-fiction on the war, and none come close to giving the sense of how it really was for these men in ground combat in Vietnam.
Many veterans are still paying the price in physical, psychological and/or emotional terms for doing their duty as American citizens. And most non-participants will never realize the sacrifices these citizens/soldiers made. Personally I have no knowledge myself since I was only 17 when the war ended in 1975, however, I am still un-nerved by the treatment these men received by fellow-countrymen then, and to some extent now (even though it is now "OK" to be a Vietnam veteran).
Read this book and see how it truly was for these brave men in their own words (and for those of all the other services involved, as well). Whether you thought this war was good or bad, right or wrong, moral or immoral...READ THIS BOOK and see how it truly was for the soldiers fighting on the ground.
The human side that sustains existance even in a dirty war........1999-02-03
Otto Lehrack has edited a vast compilation of recollections of the front line grunts who fought the war up close and personal. The good, bad and grotesque are equally represented. Unlike the REMFs who conducted the war from air conditioned offices in the rear or in Washington, Lehrack talks with the foot soldiers who suffered, lost their buddies and were forever changed by their experiences. Perhaps most prominent is the unique sense of brotherhood embodied by these story tellers. Driven together by the senselessness of the Vietnam conflict they come together out of need for one another.
This book hits home because of the clear message it sends; the troops didn't always know what they were fighting for but it was clear that they had to support one another if they were going to get home. As Capt John Ripley, winner of the Navy Cross in 1972 on his second tour puts it, "The worst that can be said about a Marine is that he wasn't around when we needed him, that we couldn't count on im. That was absolutely unthinkable to him." The Marines who recount their tale in this book provide a clear understanding of what it was like to spend thirteen months in-country with the enemy trying to kill you each and every day.
Perhaps if Americans at home understood what was going on sooner this war might have had a different outcome. By the end of No Shining Armor, the reader will certainly have a new respect for the tremendous sacrifices made by those who chose to honor their country by serving in Vietnam.
Real life stories told by those who were there........1999-01-09
These are the words and reflections of Marines from one unit which saw a lot of combat action west and north of DaNang. The author has done a wonderful job of interviewing a good cross-section of officers and enlisted men and organizing their stories chronologically from 1966 to 1970. The pride of the Marines and these mostly young soldiers is evident even 30 years after the war. This is the "grunts" story told in their own words with humor, pride, and passion. The jagged edges of South American societies attest to innumerable wars, relentless poverty, and a host of illicit activity that make the region a tumultuous brew of politics and military aggression. Peru in particular suffered one of the bloodiest civil wars in contemporary Latin American history during the 1980s and early 1990s, when the Sendero Luminoso, or “Shining Path,” launched an assault to overthrow the national government. Lewis Taylor focuses here on an under-examined yet crucially important aspect of this pivotal conflict, the Northern Front in the northern highlands of Peru.
Shining Path opens with a historical overview of Sendero Luminoso, moving from its origins to how it grew to sufficient size and strength to attempt revolt. Taylor then probes the development and progress of the Sendero Luminoso’s revolutionary campaign from 1982 through 1992, analyzing the factors that catalyzed and sustained a war in which nearly 70,000 lives were lost. The nature of rural revolt and revolution is a central issue to this study, and Taylor investigates particular conflicts in the mountainous northern highlands as a vital case study for guerrilla warfare in harsh rural landscapes.
The wars of the twenty-first century have been marked by the increasingly successful use of guerrilla warfare. Thus Shining Path is a timely analysis of the political and structural nature of such warfare and how it will transform the notion and actuality of war in years to come.

Sendero Luminoso in the Northern Andes Explained.......2007-07-27
I attended college in Lima in 1983-4, just as Sendero Luminoso's insurgency started to gain momentum. In the city, we would hear stories of political violence up in the mountains that seemed almost unbelievable in their ferocity. As murders, massacres and counter-massacres mounted, it seemed as though the Sierra was gripped in a wave of mass insanity.
Lewis Taylor is a historian/political scientist who has been studying and writing about agrarian issues in northern Peru since the late 1970's. There is no outsider who better understands the byzantine world of campesino political parties and land struggles in the Cajamarca-La Libertad region of Peru. While doing his fieldwork, Taylor met some of the people who would go on to lead Sendero Luminoso in the northern Andes. It is hard to imagine a better situated guide to explain what happened from 1989-97 in this particular region.
A micro-history of a discreet area is perhaps the best way to understand a guerilla insurgency. Revolution always has local roots and is played out on a town by town, hamlet by hamlet basis. Taylor takes the reader on a blow by blow description of the land invasions and reforms that immediately preceeded the war. He then goes on to identify by name, the local guerilla, political and military actors who would shape the conflict. Every critical step in the insurgency is explained with full and unflinching detail.
The causes and effects of Sendero Luminoso's struggle will provide historians, political scientists and anthropologists with material for papers and books for many decades. There will be many great studies but few of the writers will have been as well placed as Lewis Taylor to understand what happened. Highly recommended.

Excellent book and just what I wanted. It arrived quickly and in great condition.
Ok but incomplete.......2007-08-27
I read the Dummys Guide several months ago. Since then I have read a number of other books and watched the Dont Bid On It eBay video. I also read the Simplified Tips for ebay, Schills and Sharks, and several others. After going through everything I am ready to pass along my opinion. I will mainly compare and contrast the Dummys guide with my top choice.
The information in the Dummys Guide was outdated and incomplete. The information was good but there was a lot of important things that were left out. Pages are filled with cute cartoons instead of details ebay users really need. Lots of filler to make the book longer but when compared to newer books, the actual information was thin. It barely comments on snipe bidding but the like Don't Bid On It book(which is also available here at amazon), has a detailed article on snipe bidding plus a chapter on bidding strategies that explains how it works along with other bidding strategies. The Dummys guide only quickly mentions fraudulent sellers and feedback with little explination of how to check it. Dont Bid has an extensive chapter explaining how feedback really works, how to prevent bad buyers from leaving you negative feedback, how to use feedback to spot hijacked or fake accounts, a full chapter on feedback and how it works, it also has a full section on identifying honest buyers and what to do if you do have a problem with a buyer or seller, and much more than I can list here.
Did you know that any seller who says "I am not responsible for loss or damage if you do not buy insurance" is WRONG, they are legally responsible even if the buyer does not pay for insurance.
Did you know that if you select the wrong option when filing a PayPal complaint, your complaint will be automatically rejected and you will not be able to re-file? That is pretty important to know and both of these were in the Dont Bid book but not in Dummys Guide as well as many similar tips.
The Dont Bid book also has a demonstration video. Many of the pages in the Dummys guide were filled with explinations about what webpage to go to and what to do, it was much easier to see it demonstrated in the Dont Bid video than it was to read the step by step in the dummys guide. Some of the Dummy's Guide information was not useful, for example, they explain how to research a bidder by seeing when they return to re-bid every day, but in the Dont Bid book they explain that you should not be bidding against such an inexperienced bidder in the first place because that only runs up the price unnecessarily. By simply waiting until the last minute or using snipe software you can avoid this bidder running up the price. This was not part of the dummys strategy and as far as I can remember, that was the only strategy they had. The Dont Bid book had several bidding and several more buying strategies.
The Dummys Guide gives you enough information to get started on eBay, but not enough to trade safely or enough to buy/sell and obtain the best prices. The Dummys guide is not expensive so give it a read but dont use eBay before you read the Don't Bid On It series, only then will you really know how to use eBay safely and correctly.
Great beginning book.......2007-06-17
I hadn't done much with eBay before, so there was more explained in this book than what I had imagined eBay had. Very informative and easy to read.
