Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Most Enjoyable.......2006-02-03

This collection has what it takes to keep me happy. The book itself is a well made soft-bound type where the pages don't come out, but I don't have much trouble with them. I just fold the thing over and work on either side. You can use either pencil or pen, but pencil can get blurry... The puzzles are long enough to occupy my mind for a few hours each. The clues are mostly solveable with a fair amount of thinking and puzzling. I have to peek sometimes. I like this kind of action over a set that either has me in the back half the time or I'm never in the back and can get the puzzle done in under an hour. The time frame's pretty current, so you have to know your current history along with the stuff from the last decade, which is good, in my book- tripped me up a few times already.. All-in-all, I'd say it's standard fare for this particular line. If you've never tried these puzzles, give them a whirl. They give good value for your money. If you do them in pencil, they erase well, so you can replay the book a few times before it wears out. When I started this type of puzzle, I needed a dictionary a lot, but rarely do now, having learned how to constructively solve and get the maximum type of enjoyment these books offer.

1 out of 5 stars Sloppy printing makes reading difficult.......2003-09-08

Exciting crossword puzzles, as ever. However, the numbers in the grid itself are so poorly printed (cheap paper or ink) that misreading an entry is not uncommon. I prefer to speind time thinking of an answer, not staring closely at the puzzle to be certain what number is in a given square. There are plenty of preferable alternative puzzle sources for those who, like me, would rather pay more for an adequately printed product.

4 out of 5 stars A bargain . . . at a price.......2002-03-29

Two hundred New York Times Sunday crosswords at a nickel apiece is a great deal. The book is loaded with the work of well-known as well as less well-known constructors. Most of the puzzles are quite challenging and interesting to work and there is an ample number of humorous concepts included in the batch.
The drawback to the book - i.e., the "price" we pay for the publisher's generosity - is the lack of perforation and/or distance between the working areas and the binding. Having to write around curves on the top couple of lines across is a bit irksome.
Yet, all in all, this book is a true bargain and well worth the cost and the minor inconvenience.

5 out of 5 stars They've Done It Again!.......2000-07-12

I'm pretty good at word puzzles but these books by the NY Times are continually able to stump me. I keep doing them because they increase my vocabulary enormously. I always keep a dictionary close by, and disect each clue after I have completed the puzzles. NEVER have I done a whole puzzle without aid! This keeps me humble!

Either way, real estate offers one of the best opportunities to develop a steady stream of residual income.

4 out of 5 stars Great Resource!.......2007-08-23

This book provided a great starting point for me. Guiding me in a good direction. I eventually contacted Talley Properties http://www.TalleyProperties.com for my management needs.

3 out of 5 stars Read it, didn't do it.......2007-06-09

We were looking at the possibility of purchasing a rental home for the first time. I felt this gave us quite a bit of very useful information & was easy to understand. However, we did not end up with the rental home we thought. We did not realize that an insurance coverage on a rental property built in 1950 would be so much! However, we fould out the hard way that the plumbing & electricity must have documentation saying they have been updated & when. It also helps to have a brick home over a woodframe. There were only 2 companies out of about 20 that we called who would even consider insuring the home & at that they wanted about twice as much as I pay on my homestead. The book didn't warn us about that, but was pretty good in describing the laws & procedures involved in purchasing, maintaining, and renting a property.

5 out of 5 stars Terrific for those just starting out..........2007-03-10

As a newbie in the world of real estate investment and property management, I found this book tremendously helpful. It is easy to read, contains a number of sample documents (just wish they were available on CD or online), and takes you through the process from beginning to end. Although the entire book is informative, I found the chapters on preparing your rental property, generating interest, and handling prospects/showing the rental, to be particularly useful for me as I get started. As a person new to this field, I find myself sometimes not even knowing the right questions to ask, or the right things to consider. Mr. Griswold covers it all in detail, and this helped me to visualize what the experience will be like. Case in point, the telephone interview check sheet, guides you through what questions to ask of the potential tenant, so that you can determine if this person may or may not be a good candidate, before taking things further. Why waste their time, or yours? This is just one example of the many tips and guidelines available in this book.

5 out of 5 stars Very good resource.......2006-11-11

This is an easy-to-read resource that provides a good basis of knowledge for the aspiring property manager. It's a great place to start if you have no idea what else to do. It should have come with a CD with all of the forms that it mentions, but that's a minor gripe.

4 out of 5 stars Easy to digest........2006-06-27

This book helps the new property manager get a feel for what it takes to be a property manager. Easy to read.

5 out of 5 stars Patents, Copyrights & Trademarks for Dummies.......2007-09-19

I applied for a US Federal Trademark on July 13th and besides putting the (c) on my name and art work... I never thought much about sending in anything to the Copyright office in D.C. End of August a check company contacted me to license my artwork for their checks and address labels... this I knew was big but I needed extra help. A friend suggested this book, I ordered it immediately and wow... it is so super easy to comprehend. I absolutely now swear by this book I've nicknamed the "Artist's Bible." I have found all the tips, etc about copyrighting my art AND about trademark issues extremely valuable. I have actually ear marked several pages so I can go back to that as a reference quickly. And it's also important to have an attorney to fall back on which I do. But yes I highly recommend this book for any artist serious enough to get their work copyrighted or even getting their company name trademarked like me.

5 out of 5 stars Great Resource.......2007-03-29

When I received this book I was blown away by how much useful information it contained. It was easy to read and understand, has quick references that pertain to your subject or you can skip to something more applicable, and was filled with up-to-date information on how to obtain a patent. A great resource!

4 out of 5 stars Great Information for Business Beginners.......2007-03-09

When you think of a product you may be under the impression that I need to patent my invention, but don't have to do anything else. Nothing can be further from the truth. Henri Charmasson spells out clearly in this well written, humorous book how one must wisely go out and protect their intellectual property. He cleverly steers you through the unfriendly and confusing halls of the USPTO - the Patent and Trademark office, and guides you to seeking out the advice of an IP professional, (namely a patent attorney). It is a must read for new business owners, and many established businesses can use the help as well. But after going through the book, you will learn one thing - "Do not to go about patenting and Trademarking by yourself. Get a professional to help you."

5 out of 5 stars Great entry-level book.......2006-06-21

I'm in legal with an IP background and this book is a great IP primer - I was pleasantly surprised by the depth. 'Dummies' is a misnomer as it provides entry-level to intermediate coverage.

3 out of 5 stars Dated, Biased, But Worth the Price.......2002-11-27

In general, I am a big fan of For Dummies books. However, this book does not live up the usually high For Dummies standard for two reasons. This book was written at the height of the dot-com bubble, and GreatDomains.com wrote this book.

Having GreatDomains.com write this book would be like having Weight Watchers write Dieting for Dummies. You can't expect unbiased advice from a leading company whose business model is selling expensive generic/descriptive domain names.

There is a controversy on generic vs. proper names, but this is barely mentioned in the For Dummies Book. The opposite view, "The kiss of death for an Internet brand is a common (generic) name" is taken in the book "The 11 Immutable Laws of Internet Branding." I am not saying that one view or the other is correct, but a book on domain names should cover both sides.

Chapter 3 is titled "The New Land Rush in Domain Names." The first section is "Understanding the Reasons Behind Skyrocketing Domain Name Prices." Since the book has been published, domain name prices have fallen faster than dot-com stocks. All of the domain name prices in the book should be reduced by a factor of ten or more.

Still much of the book contains useful information, and the price is reasonable. You just have to keep in mind that the information is one-sided and written at the height of the dot-com bubble. A less biased but overly legal book is "Domain Names" by Elias & Gima. Also look at "How to Select & Buy an Elite Domain Name."

4 out of 5 stars how to protect an invention; not how to make one.......2005-03-01

The book offers a good explanation to the tyro of what it takes to protect your invention. The book is not really about inventing, per se. Despite what the title says. A careful read of the contents reveals relatively little discussion about the raw inventing process. That is, how does one come up with an original idea that can be patentable? It may well be that such a question has no answer.

Rather, the book's contribution is to show the reader that, if you make something that you think is worth patenting, what are the necessary steps to do so. It explains how you can protect your invention from others. It focuses on steps that can be specifically described to you, and then performed by you. Like how to file a Provisional Patent Application. And how you can now do this electronically. (Which wasn't always the case.) While some of these steps are unique to the United States, in general they apply in most countries.

There is also a brief discussion about copyright issues in the book. But it is tangential to the main topic.

1 out of 5 stars Business Leasing for Dummies.......2003-06-20

This book is more about the benefits and features of leasing. It does not give the reader any information on structuring a lease. The only benefit that I saw in reading this book was that it did inform me about different lease types.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent if niche book.......2002-07-09

For anyone in the leasing business, this is a wonderful book to own. It is a complete training course in equipment leasing. The author has the only good explanation I could ever find of concepts such as leveraged leases. This book is a _must_ for anyone in the equipment leasing industry.

I wish that the author had worked out a few examples with the reader on cash flows and pricing of leases. There is some math that is not very clear to the first time reader. I also wish that there was some more information about vendor leasing and lease origination.

Regardless, this is one heck of a training course in leasing for under 20 dollars. If you are in any way involved with leasing, this is money well spent.
