Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A solid readable work.......2000-03-17

I found the book very helpful. I am something of a newbie to the game. I have played AOE both 1 and 2 for only a couple of months but I found this book a real help in picking up some of the more subtle aspects of the game's dynamics.

Compared to the Inside Moves Edition strategy guide for AOE 2, this one is far superior. Kent has obviously done quite a bit of work on figuring out the strengths and weaknesses of the various units. There are comparisons and contrasts and useful strategy suggestions. I particularly liked the discussions of the times required for particular units of one type to vanquish units of another type. The book would have been better for including yet MORE of this kind of information (e.g. How many stone age club men does it take to kill an Iron Age chariot archer? How does one recover from certain tactical mistakes and unit mismatches? What do you do when facing a catapult and you only have archers? etc.) The author goes into detail when explaining how he experimented using the scenario editor and explains this process to the user so that even the newbies can continue their educations beyond the book.

The walkthroughs were readable, the instructions were clear and complete and the advice is good, given that the suggestions worked and behaved as indicated. The section on multi-player gaming may have been a bit light, but then, experience is definitely the best teacher in that realm and everyone has their own style. There may indeed be more extensive information on the various fan web sites, but as a tutorial, reference, and walkthough guide, I find the book useful and recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars AWSOME!!!!!!!!!.......1999-08-04

This book was awsome! Just the historical section was worth the 13 bucks. If you like Age of Empires fan, this is a must buy

1 out of 5 stars Boring, wordy, and very, very, very basic.......1999-06-29

I got this book free with the game, and it proved to be a waste of my time. Its only strong point is telling you how to beat the scenarios--and it isn't much fun to play them if you already know everything in them=no challenge or surprises. As far as strategy--WHAT strategy??? The only strategy I saw was "archers attack well in groups." As far as civilization strengths, you get that information in the tiny book that comes with the game anyway. Why pay money to read the same thing in more verbose language. If all you have is the information in this book, be prepared to be laughed at if you play anyone who has ANY experience with the game! Free web sites galore give you REAL information. I don't think this book was worth what I paid for it, which was nothing, since I got it for free. I'm ashamed of Microsoft for foisting off such worthless stuff when they could have made a great guide for a great game.

2 out of 5 stars Not the greatest.......1999-06-08

Don't buy this book expecting alot. I could get much better tips for FREE from somebodys webpage. This book in my opinion is a waste of time if you plan to read it, and a waste of money if you plan to buy it. I hope if you read my review you will be smart enough not to buy this book.

5 out of 5 stars Great book about a great game.......1999-03-06

This book tells you in detail everything in a scenario you need to know to win. The book offers deeper insight on the historical aspects of the game, making it a different experience altogether.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great book for beginners........1998-09-17

This book is just what the novice player needs. It provides the tips and strategies necessary to make the game enjoyable rather than frustrating. Well written and nicely illustrated, the book carefully details the individual scenarios within each campaign, allowing the player to develop the basic knowledge and skills for more advanced play.

1 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money........1998-04-19

If you read the review on the back cover you think you are getting a great book, but MS Press must have written their own on this book.

2 out of 5 stars Yeah...useless book.......1998-03-23

Figures. Can't believe I read the reviews and bought this book anyway. Sheesh. Like, 3 frickin pages in the whole book about multiplay and not nearly enough about advantages, disadv of each culture.

4 out of 5 stars Great for starting out..........1997-12-30

This strategy guide is mostly filled with detailed, well-written explanations helping you to beat each scenario in the campaigns. It does very well on that, but there are few general playing/multiplaying tips, and scant descriptions of units and buildings.

2 out of 5 stars Misleading Cover.......1997-11-18

The book I purchased was shrink wrapped, and, if I could have looked through the book briefly, I wouldn't have bought it. I was looking for tips, tricks, tactics, and strategies mainly geared towards multiplayer gaming.

One sentence on the cover claims "Full of play-tested tactics and strategies, 'Microsoft Age of Empires: Inside Moves' will be your guide--providing you with strategic hints, statistics, and tactical assistance neccesary to lead your civilization to glory." I disagree. There are very few useful strategic hints and no statistical tables. Finding the cost, hit points, attack value, armor value, and range of a unit cannot be accomplished easily with this book.

The book contains one chapter labled "What Every Emperor Should Know." This chapter briefly describes the units and structures, but it leaves out all the marine units and provides very little new information to me. Most tactics from Warcraft II apply to the gameplay described in this chapter.

The cover does not mention single player campaigns, but single player campaign strategies occupy about 200 of the 280 pages in the book. I expected that it would contain campaign tips, but this was overwhelming.

The book provides two multiplayer strategies--both completely worthless. The book contains far more historical information on ancient civilizations than multiplayer tips. I wasn't concerned about ancient emperors; I wanted to improve my gameplay.

I would recommend this book to a beginner mainly concerned with the campaigns or perhaps to a person "researching" ancient civilizations. I rated it so low because I didn't fit into the two categories above. The book has very good campaign assistance and good historical reference. ;)

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Nice.......2007-09-28

This book is decent for the price, it gives nice reference material. Just don't look for a lot of tips and strategies here, especially ones that haven't been tried already.

5 out of 5 stars my main and only ally in this game.......2004-04-02

this book was sooo helpful that it would have taken me twice as long just to complete the scenarios, much less find all the secrets. the illustrations helped, not hinderd, the very deep walkthroughs that used multiple strategies instead of just one straightforward killing spree. i like working alone so when i'm playing true to history by playing as the byzantines and defending against the huns, turks, saracens, teutons, goths, persians and the franks all at once this is my greek fire against them. with it's help i bash aside their light cavalry and charge through their heavy infantry to take the heart out of each and every civilization and leave nothing standing except for mountains upon mountains of skulls... thats why i call myself nick the butcher.

5 out of 5 stars The best game ever.......2004-03-28

This game is the best game I ever played. I wish I could buy it, but my parents say I can't because they need the computer for taxes and bills and also they don't let me in case it ruins the computer like one of my other games. So I play it at a friend's house. I never seem to get enough of playing it so I am sometimes late home. It is really interesting because some of this is like real life because each civilization is unique in it's own way with special things like each of their special units. Now I guess the only way to but it is if I buy a new computer so I can play on it, because my mom doesn't like me playing the game all the time.

2 out of 5 stars This is mostly a campaign book.......2002-09-28

If you play campaigns and need help, this is the book for you. Over 2/3's of the book is devoted to walking you through the campaigns. If however, if campaigns are a thing of the past for you and you are trying to refine your skills to play against other people... this book is of little help. There are a couple of pages detailing the newest civs to TC, not much more info is offered than what comes with the aoe documentation. There are a few strategies that are described that are pretty basic and are useful if you've never or hardly played before. There is a section that supposedly has tips from the actual ES testers (3 I think)...pretty weak because everyone's preferences are always debatable. Anyway, they pretty much just give their opinions on what civ, what unit and combinations they like best. (To kill your curiosity, most chose Mayans for the archer/eagle scout combo.) Adding links in the book to aoe websites is a waste of space. You're better off going to Google and typing in 'AOK TC' and getting hundreds of links to sites that people actually use. So... since I don't really play campaigns anymore and I am a person trying to find resources to get better playing against other people, I found this book a waste of money. I only gave it an extra star because it details the campaigns pretty good.

3 out of 5 stars Solid, but Limited.......2002-07-17

This is a great book IF you are already aware of all the existing strengths and weaknesses of the civilizations that are not new to the Conquerors Edition. In other words, you better have the previous book if you want complete knowledge of all the civilizations.

That having been said, the depth of the analysis for each of the new civilizations is impressive. It tells you everything you need to do to use a civilization's strengths to their best advantage.

There is very little general training here, and so is not the right book for 'beginners'. I makes a fine addition to the knowledge base of an already experienced user who needs depth on what's NEW in this edition.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Decent book.......2007-09-21

This guide is fairly useful, although there is a lot of info about factions that I never play. Just a personal preference. Otherwise, this book is useful, especially for strategies and tips on how to win the game.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome game!.......2002-01-22

This is an awesome game for anyone who likes constant action...You advance trough the middle ages while making the best military you can. Then with your military you attack your enemy. I suggest this game to everyone. With more than 3000 players online, I think youll like it.It is an awesome gift for anyone.

4 out of 5 stars Absolutely Spiffing!.......2001-05-29

I must say that I disagree entirely with others who have written a review for this strategy guide. I think that it's great that the author gave so much information on each civilization; that way you can become an expert in one area. His advise is great and it works, and he seems to know a lot about the game. I do, however, agree that he should have written more general tactics, but a lot of the general tactics he explains when writing about the civilizations. His walkthroughs for each campaign and scenario are fantastic and prescise, and if I were you I would buy this guide in an instant.

(By the way, I was about in the middle of between expert and novice when I bought this book.)

3 out of 5 stars Skip this if you're not a rookie........2000-11-09

Well if you're looking for in-depth strategies you're in the wrong place, it only works if your manual is missing or something like that, this only gives the very basics of the game and if you're a semi-experienced then you already found out for yourself most of the "tips" in the book.
I give it 3 stars because the Mexican edition of the book (which I own) includes a CD-ROM with additional levels and AI files and many other utilities that will allow you to take more fun of the game.

2 out of 5 stars A big disappointment.......2000-10-09

I am a rookie at AOK, so I thought this book might help me improve. I have played the game for only a couple of weeks and almost all the tips given here were things I had already learned in the course of playing the game. This book adds very little to the knowledge base of the manual and/or that which one obtains by playing a few campaigns. I felt it was a real waste of money.

    Customer Reviews:

    4 out of 5 stars Great leader.......2007-08-27

When I started the book, I have no idea about the history of IBM. I am not an IT person, so I have heard IBM but that is basically it.
I learned a lot from the book about IBM, what they did wrong and how he changed it.
But besides everything he revised the company culture and organizational structure. I think that is the hardest thing a CEO can achieve. His vision, his attention to details but still seeing the big picture amazed me. No wonder they picked him as the great saver of the IBM legend.
The book is long and sometimes repeats itself, without going into details.
The part I enjoyed the most was his e-mails. How encouraging was he after 9/11, he mentioned employee names and all the things they did both to help and also to get their business going. He sent e-mails to his 300.000 employees. His tone and the things he mentions, his clarity was amazing. He is an excellent leader. IBM is very lucky to have such a good CEO.

5 out of 5 stars What Life at the Top is Really Like--As Told By a Superb Leader.......2007-08-16

Having spent twenty-three years in management before I became an entrepreneur, I recognize that moving from one side of the desk to the other side may be the longest journey a professional person ever makes. When we shift into a leadership spot, not only do we find that our prior perceptions might have been totally inaccurate, we have to address personal and professional challenges we would have never imagined.

I applaud this book as one man's record of what life at the top is really like. He won me over immediately when he decided to wear a blue shirt because everyone else was wearing white. Thoreau would have applauded his individualism.

With my current profession dedicated to improving individual and corporate communication, I agree with Gerstner's assertion that "No institutional transformation takes place, I believe, without a multi-year commitment by the CEO to put himself or herself constantly in front of employees and speak in plain, simple, compelling language that drives conviction and action throughout the organization."

Another striking bit of Gerstner wisdom: "Success in a company comes foremost from success with the customer, nothing else."

He's right on target again when he observes that "lack of focus is the most common cause of corporate mediocrity."

Yet Gerstner goes beyond mere platitudes: "Execution--getting the task done, making it happen--is the most unappreciated skill of an effective business leader."

Possibly two of Gerstner's words capsule his approach to awakening IBM to its possibilities: "constructive impatience."

In my judgment, Louis Gerstner should rank alongside Jack Welch as a take-no-prisoners leader. Read this book, and you will agree that he was the right man at the right time for IBM.The Complete Communicator: Change Your Communication-change Your Life!

4 out of 5 stars Where Were the Details?.......2007-06-06

Throughout this book Gerstner discusses the changes IBM made and how he helped turned the company around. I have no doubt that he was a large part of the dynamic shift at IBM to again make it the successful, global company that it is today, but I felt that I went through the book without completely understanding what those changes were. There was a lot of discussion of how IBM was operated and managed when Gerstner took control of the company in 1993 as it was falling apart before the public's eyes, and there was a lot of explanation of how IBM was successful and reborn when he stepped down from the CEO position in 2002. But there was little substance in between. I am not sure if that is because the day-to-day steps taken throughout the mid and late 1990s are too mundane for the average business reader, of if the details were just left out. Gerstner does share some insight into leadership skills and his management style, but IBM as is left in the shadows. All in all, this is not a bad book, but be aware that the reader is left wondering exactly how IBM regained its dominant position in the marketplace.

    4 out of 5 stars A leader thru change.......2007-05-17

Mr. Gerstner provides his story of when he took over the reigns at IBM and brought the company back on its feet. This is a strict business book with internal memos and charts at the end so it can lend itself to being a bit boring in some parts. However, when the authir describes how he was able to navicate thru the huge complexity of all the different divisions, then this book becomes a valuable reference for any business leader who needs to go thru the same process.

      Book Description

In 1990, IBM had its most profitable year ever. By 1993, the company was on a watch list for extinction -- victimized by its own lumbering size, an insular corporate culture, and the PC era IBM had itself helped invent.

Enter Lou Gerstner. The presumption was that Gerstner had joined IBM to preside over its continued dissolution into a confederation of autonomous business units -- effectively eliminating the corporation that had invented many of the industry's most important technologies. Instead, Gerstner took hold of the company, making the bold decision to keep it together, defiantly announcing, "The last thing IBM needs right now is a vision."

Told in Lou Gerstner's own words, this is a story of an extraordinary turnaround, a case study in managing a crisis, and a thoughtful reflection on the computer industry and the principles of leadership. Summing up his historic business achievement, Gerstner recounts high-level meetings, explains the no-turning-back decisions that had to be made, and offers his hard-won conclusions about the essence of what makes a great company run.

From the Publisher In 1990, IBM had its most profitable year ever. By 1993, the computer industry had changed so rapidly the company was on its way to losing $16 billion and IBM was on a watch list for extinction -- victimized by its own lumbering size, an insular corporate culture, and the PC era IBM had itself helped invent. Then Lou Gerstner was brought in to run IBM. Almost everyone watching the rapid demise of this American icon presumed Gerstner had joined IBM to preside over its continued dissolution into a confederation of autonomous business units. This strategy, well underway when he arrived, would have effectively eliminated the corporation that had invented many of the industry's most important technologies. Instead, Gerstner took hold of the company and demanded the managers work together to re-establish IBM's mission as a customer-focused provider of computing solutions. Moving ahead of his critics, Gerstner made the hold decision to keep the company together, slash prices on his core product to keep the company competitive, and almost defiantly announced, "The last thing IBM needs right now is a vision." Who Says Elephants Can't Dance? tells the story of IBM's competitive and cultural transformation. In his own words, Gerstner offers a blow-by-blow account of his arrival at the company and his campaign to rebuild the leadership team and give the workforce a renewed sense of purpose. In the process, Gerstner defined a strategy for the computing giant and remade the ossified culture bred by the company's own success.

              Book Description

Powerful images of India have emerged during the last fifteen years, after the country's economy was opened up in 1991. The economic rise of India started to grab the attention of global policy makers and economists recently. Little more than 15 years ago, this giant was virtually off the radar of many western countries. The era of skepticism is now over and the era of awe has begun. The global competitiveness of Indian industry and the role its knowledge capital is playing in the process of globalization and structural change in the world economy are the visible signs of India's empowerment. India is transforming the global economy in many ways that could not have been conceived a decade earlier. The world is coming to understand its success in information technology, off shore centers, and above all, the contributions of Indians in the hi-tech start up arena. India today is at the cusp of a paradigm change in its growth trajectory and its position in the world. This text is a discourse on India's recent rise, its present competencies and the future challenges the country needs to overcome, if it has to live up to the reputation as the next economic power house.
