5 out of 5 stars The most interesting book White Wolf has published so far........2002-09-05

This book is simply amazing.
Even if you don't like vampires or the entire White Wolf line of monster rpg's this is a very interesting book. The subject matter is unique and it isn't just European vampires transplanted to Asia.
Before this book came out I was skeptical that W.W. would do Asian "vampires" justice but they exceeded my wildest expectations.
It mostly focuses on N-E cultures (China/Japan/Korea) but there is even a bit on Malaysian "vampires".
W.W. has even done an excellent job of putting out supplements for the game.

4 out of 5 stars Hey, if you can figure it out..........2001-08-22

Hey, this book is pretty awesome. The art work is amazing, the concept is very intriguing, and the entire idea of a race of vampires in no way relate to the curse of caine is wonderful. But, my only problem is, i can't figure out the dang thing! I love the fact that there is more to worry about than blood, health, and willpower; but i can't figure out what the heck you do with the rest of it! P'o? Hun? Yin Chi? Yang Chi? Gee, one day i will figure it out, and then i will have a good ol' time. But until then, i'm gonna play with my new fav (Vampire: The Dark Ages) until the great day when the epiphany hits me, and it is all made clear.

4 out of 5 stars Great book!.......2001-06-21

I love this book even though I'm more of a Mage type player. I have played and ST'ed all but Wraith and this BUT! it would definately be my next choice.

I think the KotE are some of the most defined characters a player can make. That said, the KotE are also some of the more complicated to play because the book KotE is not a stand alone game. It was produced to add more flair and versatility to VtM.

There were only a few questions I had. Agravated damage was never covered.. or not that I saw. I read about them being able to do it with several of their powers but I could only find 2 ways that they could soak it. the lvl 2 or 3 bone shentai and the demon shentai with the armor. ohh well something else to e-mail WW about.

Definatly a game for intermediant to advanced players. I'm not sure if I would suggest it as a starter though.

4 out of 5 stars Strangers in strange lands.......2001-05-12

Gorgeous artwork. Fantastic new world. Great reinterpretations of things. Wonderful use of mixing history with the World of Darkness. They promised to deliver a vampire alien to the kindred of Caine, and they succeeded; the setting is exotic, interesting, and definitely recommended. I especially liked their take on lycanthropes. I didn't like the lack of information on India, which would have been a great setting and prime conflict ground with British vampires. The Russia/Mongolia/China boundaries could have been interesting as well. It's impossible to play without the original Vampire book, which irks me; a completely new setting could use a reexplanation, I think. Lastly, the nature/demeanor/dharma split isn't quite clear. It's obvious that some traits are connected to and sympathetic with others, but what this sympathy does in terms of the game is never well-explained.

5 out of 5 stars Buy this book.......2000-08-09

I think this is the best book that White Wolf has published so far. If you have any interest in "vampires" from Asia, this is the book to get, followed by The 1000 Hells. Even if you never actually play an eastern vampire, this book is a great read.

5 out of 5 stars A good companion.......2003-04-08

I would not call this book a must have for role players, but as a storyteller particularly interested in crossover it provides most useful tools. Here are included extra disciplines for the Kuei-Jin toghether with a better explanation of what happens with those who do not belong tho Kuei-Jin society per se. Namely the akumas (as called by other Kuei-Jin). If you are a storyteller and you're thinking of getting Kuei-Jin into your chronicles, then this book would be of great assistance, though not essential.

5 out of 5 stars Good book for KoE.......2000-03-28

This is essentially a player's guide for KoE. It has 4 more dharmas to follow if you didn't like any of the 5 in the KoE book. It also has about 9 extra disciplines for kuei-jin to use. In addition to that it lists disciplines to the 9th level. So, if you are the only kuei-jin in your group or all of the others play with power characters, you can survive. Also, it gives information on dhampyrs and yulan-jin. There is a lot of valuable background information, too. There aren't many questions left after reading this book.

5 out of 5 stars finally!!.......1999-04-08

finally, the many questions left unanswered in KoE have been answered in this supplement. yet, many more questions surface. this supplement adds a whole new depth to playing kindred and allows for a greater diversity in gameplay.

5 out of 5 stars Enter the Gates of Yomi..........2001-10-15

This has to be one of the best books I've read through in the Kindred of the East expansion. The 1000 Hells is not to be played with lightly -- it's serious business for those who wish to commune with the likes of Emma-O, Mikaboshi, Tou Mu, Rangda, and a host of other Yama Kings (and Queens) that rule Yomi. It shows you how to create a Yama King/Queen, the type of hell s/he would rule, systems on how to go to hell (literally, no pun intended), the effects of most disciplines while in Yomi (both Kuei-jin and Cainite), even how to commune and bargain with the Rulers of Hell and become an akuma (both standard and the exquisitely monstrous princes of Hell versions). Coupled with the latter half of Killing Streets (where it discusses the Broken Mirror systems), and you have the makings of a very memorable, spine-chilling chronicle. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars ST Must for eastern games.......2000-02-16

Whether you are running Kndred of the East, Hengeyokai, or god forbid a Hsien chronicle, this is the best book for giving the eastern world of teeth. From the greater Akuma to the Demons of Iron and violence, this book has everything you need to bring some major havoc into your game. And if its intrigue you want this book hs plenty to offer.

4 out of 5 stars 1000 Hells: Yama Kings Galore.......1999-06-16

The 1000 Hells book is one of the better supplements White Wolf has published. It contains descriptions of several Yomi Realms (especially the Wicked City is a very interesting Realm) and has biographies of the most (in)famous Yama Kings. It gives examples of Demon Servants and other antagonists to use in a Yomi chronicle, and has expanded rules on akuma (Yama Infernalist Investments and such - very good stuff!). All in all, definately worthwhile the money if you play a KotE chronicle which involves the Yomi World.

      5 out of 5 stars A must-have for all Shadow Songs.......2000-04-25

This book provides great insight into the Bone Flower dharma. I really appreciated how each tenant of the dharma was examined and illustrated with colorful fables. I didn't begin to understand what this dharma was really about until I read those. There's also information on how Bone Flowers often view and interact with the other dharmas, and what life is like in different parts of the Middle Kingdom for Bone Flowers. If you're looking for amazing new powers and traits, you won't find many here, but if you're curious about how to role-play this dharma, this book will help. I look forward to future books in this series.

      4 out of 5 stars Not Bad.......2000-03-14

"The Bone Flower Dharma book included a lot of nifty detail and insight into what it means to be a Bone Flower. However, the White Wolf writers made the all too common stereotyping of shadowy, therefore assassins as was the case for the Lasombras and the Sluaghs.

      5 out of 5 stars A comprehensive book detailing a difficult dharma.......2000-12-01

Dharma Book Devil Tiger does an excellent job of clarifying a single group within the world of the Kuei-jin...along the same lines as the previously released clanbooks for Vampire: The Masquerade. It provides clarification and most importantly *examples* of the abstract concepts previously presented in the core book. From the beginning story to the final character bios, the driving point is clear: Evil without purpose, for it's own sake, is mundane and not worth the energy expended clawing your way out of yomi. The only thing that distinguishes the devil tigers from ordinary demons is that they utilize their intimate knowledge of evil towards a purpose which serves Heaven: by punishing the unrighteous in their own way. They are by no means the "good guys" but as illustrated in the book, they serve a vital, if ugly, role in the WoD.

In addition, the new sects and organizations within the Devil Tigers add a nice sense of purpose vs. chaotic destruction while the opposing sects and philosophies add a much needed touch of realistic factionism to the groups. The Electric Money Wickness group in particular is also a nice updating of the Kuei-jin and their operations [considering that in many other works they come across as anachronistic] and puts them in league with their Ventrue financier counterparts. The character templates, while more basic, illustrative concepts than playable characters, each have a distinct voice and personality.

And to those who have complained about the graphic detail of the book, remember that the whole point of the WoD games is to explore darker themes in the safe [and most importantly, *imaginery* : for entertainment only.] setting of roleplaying: a story contributed to by the players. The entire premise is to weave fictional scenarios of 'personal horror'; how far are you willing to delve into the nature of horror?

1 out of 5 stars More of the same.......2000-09-08

I really like the KoE system, but unfortunately the Devil-tiger book seems to be going into a lot of what White Wolf has been doing lately - let's get more graphic and outrageous when it's not really needed, and we'll sell more stuff. I like the CONCEPT of the devil-tigers, but frankly they go into unnecessary depth. It's one thing to involve violence such as rape in a plot, and say it happened, it's another to actually go and play it out in painful detail. Hope they get better with the next one.

      4 out of 5 stars Evil?.......2000-02-05

This books introduces you to the followers of the Devil Tigers Dharma. For those of you unfamiliar with the Kindred of the East system that means Clan. This guys really make look each other nasty of the World of Darkness like children. While all the other Tradition, Clan, Tribe books always have someone who assures you that they are the meanest of all the groups, they are ussually lost in their own schemes and petty politicing. That's not the point with the Devil Tigers, they have their feets firmly planted on the ground and of all the supernaturals around the World of Darkness, they have the realest agenda. Worth the reading even if you don't play on this system. Be warned though, you may not like all that you read.

      4 out of 5 stars Monsters?.......2000-01-18

This is a good book for the most part. The introductory story and much of the book focuses on explaining that the Devil Tigers are Demons or think that they are Demons. This makes for a pretty dark book. On the other hand, the thing that distinguishes them from western vampires is that they have something to do--punish the wicked. The only flaw is the pages on using Crimson rituals and artifacts in a live action game--the information appears identical to the info on how to run these artifacts in a standard game.

4 out of 5 stars How to fight the Kuei-jin way........2000-08-07

This is a very well done book about how Asian vampires fight. It explains the political/historical/religious reasons for the different rules used to conduct them. All of the background info on why these fights are handled in they way they are gives a good feel to the politics and mood of the Kuei-jin courts.

The first section is about "twilight wars", which are very ritualized conflict between kuei-jin used to settle a dispute. The book lists several different types to twilight wars and when they are used. The main problem that I had with this section was that there are a lot of different type of twilight wars, and most of them are not given examples of how they work in more detail. The second section is about "midnight wars", which unlike the twilight wars are only completed by the destruction of one of the sides involved. Even with fight ting of this level the rules and rituals must be followed. There is also a discussion of tactics used, though anyone who has read Sun Tzu's Art of War will find it very familiar.

The third section is about the conflicts raging between the older more traditional Kuei-jin and the newer more modern and westernized ones. It gives the rather different tactics used by both sides in this conflict.

The fifth section is the only one that will have much use to a campaign dealing with western vampires. This section is about what the Kuei-jin are doing in the West Coast of America and Australia. It explains their organization, opposition, tactics and what they're motives are. Trust me it's interesting.

There is also a chapter about organizations used in the fighting and notable characters. Over all this is a very good book with a lot of information about how Kuei-jin fight, but it is of very little to no use for campaigns dealing only with the childer of Cain.

          2 out of 5 stars Drivel.......2007-03-30

Absolutely uninteresting, I'm returning it. Over the years, I've bought, oh probably like a dozen of these books (from this series, I mean) and, with the exception of Managing High-Tech Enterprise, found them completely unhelpful and uninteresting. Always self-contradictory, unintelligent, and droning, they remind me of the "self-help" book genre -- which is to say, politically-correct, vapid tripe that the publishers probably believe will sell in any quantities and no matter how bad, simply because people look forever for advice and will probably buy and keep buying. Very disappointing; I'm through with this series.

4 out of 5 stars Solid and Insightful (as expected).......2006-08-29

Didn't get five stars because some of the articles are a little dated. Updates from a time after e-mail was invented would be helpful. Fernando Bartelome's article is worth the price of the book all by itself.

5 out of 5 stars Best Comunications Book Ever!.......2005-07-22

Talk about efficive. This book has increased my comunication effictiveness 110%. The articles are very inciteful. Before I read this book my meetings went terrible. I was rarely a project lead. This book showed me how terribily incompetant I really was. The book Effective Comunications completly undressed me. Then, I let its articals dress me with confidence. People pay attention in my meetings and they are productive in a new way.

5 out of 5 stars Breadth of articles that help business communication work.......2002-02-22

Though the collection of articles may at first seem sort of old (the oldest is from 1957), the content is very apropos for today. While building a Training Roadmap for our company, I found articles that I think will be extremely useful for a wide range of positions.

What first attracted me was the article on "Listening to People", where I found the clearest presentation on why our listening fails. Even better, it tells how we can improve our listening as a skill that has to be learned.

The next article on "How to Run a Meeting" was enlightening, almost literally! I rushed into my boss' office with new insights on why certain meetings had to be held and how they should run.

I haven't read word-for-word the whole book, rather I've read some others and skimmed some others. That sampling seems to indicate they're all of the same quality.

4 out of 5 stars Good as almost always in this series.......2000-05-11

I already own five of the paperbacks in the Harvard Business Review series. The articles in it are really state-of-the-art in the field the book is about. And so it is in the case of the Harvard Business Review on Effective Communication. I appreciate the chance to read what the most important authors have to say in short articles, not in long books. The articles are long enough to understand and give many good ideas worth working on.

            Book Description

"Good business leaders create a vision, articulate the vision, passionately own the vision, and relentlessly drive it to completion," asserts Jack Welch, Chairman and CEO of General Electric, in an interview featured in The Articulate Executive. This insightful collection illustrates the powerful connections between effective communication and effective leadership in the information age. While some of the articles focus on the mechanics of communication-providing applicable ideas and guidelines for improving writing skills, presenting plans, conducting interviews, and holding meetings-the emphasis is on the variable beneath the surface, such as nonverbal cues and personal agendas, which have at least as great an impact on how messages are received and acted upon as they travel up, down, and across the organization.
