.

Have you ever seen a juggler in the park and wonder "How'd they do that?" Well, it ain't that hard, and this book makes it down right simple.

When you learn to juggle with your kids, you give them and yourself a serious boost of self-confidence and increases manual dexterity rather remarkably.

But most importantly, juggling teaches you time management.

Right know you are probably thinking "HUH!"

Bear with me.

When you juggle you are working with three or more objects (hereafter: balls), you always have one ball in each hand and one ball in the air. All you need to do with the ball in each hand is gain control (catch) and change direction (toss). But, you must do it quickly because you have a ball in the air that will need attention very soon.

NONE OF THE BALLS NEED CONSTANT ATTENTION.

Back at the office: you have several projects at ay give time. As a project manager, you need to insure that each project gets all the attention it needs at just the right time, and move on to the next project.

See, over simplified.

    5 out of 5 stars The Literary/Film Bible.......2007-09-26

Peter Miller's Author!Screenwriter! is direct and to the point, so I shall be also. This beautifully organized exposition provided me with more insight into the Book and Film industry than I have found in any other source. I could write much more, applauding the great chapters on the mysteries of film deals and the most helpful examples of project proposals in many genres -- but the bottom line is simple Author!Screenwriter! is definitive, the most helpful book on the subject.

5 out of 5 stars Wisdom par excellence.......2007-07-28

I purchased Peter Miller's book at the recommendation of a colleague who knew I was in the process of writing a book proposal. Peter's book and DVD provide the reader/viewer with such clarity and direction. Peter provides wisdom and insights for the experienced and the novice writer in how to maneuver their way through the challenges, obstacles, politics and subtelties of the publishing industry. By the time you are finished reading his book and viewing his DVD you have a very clear picture of what lies ahead - no rose colored glasses, advice for the dedicated writer; you are clearer than you ever imagined you could be about what lies ahead. Buy this book if you are serious about our writing career.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant and engaging!.......2007-07-18

"...exciting and stimulating with a galloping narrative pace. Full of resourceful `cut through the noise' content that will boom confidence in hopeful writers decade after decade...." Peter's passion for his work and the publishing industry speaks loudly. I heartily recommend this book to any aspiring author or screenwriter.

    5 out of 5 stars The Best-of-Breed Manual.......2007-07-14

I have read several books on this subject, but with Peter Miller's "Author! Screenwriter!" I have felt this is the one I should have read right at the beginning. It is comprehensive, hands-on and straight forward. It is clear that some decades of experience have made this book an outstanding piece that everyone , who is in the field of authoring and/or screenwriting, should read. In short it makes your life easier and you are likely to be more successful sooner. Reading it is a time well spent and good fun, too.

5 out of 5 stars This Is The Book........2007-06-18

I'm a neophyte screenwriter with one screen credit to my name. I was delighted to find Author! Screenwriter! after having read many other books that promised to tell me what this one actually does: how to succeed as a writer in New York and Hollywood. Everything I need to know is in these pages, with invaluable examples so I have something concrete to go on as I prepare proposals and negotiate contracts. Even better, this book is a page turner, something I had come not to expect from how-to tomes about publishing books and getting screenplays sold and produced. It's as if you have fifteen meetings with Peter himself, plus all the supporting materials you could desire, and he's there across the table with his brilliance and energy sharing his wonderful expertise in a way that's both highly literate and highly accessible.

New York and Hollywood are the geographic poles of books and films in the U.S., and Peter Miller is the best possible Virgil to anyone's Dante determined to negotiate these sometimes frightening realms. Even if you aren't looking to succeed as a published author or a produced one, read this just because it's so engaging, so much fun!

2 out of 5 stars Professor, check your facts.......2007-08-25

I didn't know I was in Professor Allen's book until a friend picked it up on Google. I would be wary of factual problems in the book because everything he wrote about me, except the spelling of my name, was wrong.
-Kirstie Wilde, former television news reporter and anchor, KGW-TV, Portland; KCST-TV, San Diego; KGTV-TV, San Diego; KRON-TV, San Francisco; WHAS-TV, Louisville; KNBC-TV, Los Angeles; KTTV-TV, Los Angeles; KCBA-TV, Monterey/Salinas, in that order. Also, I wasn't the first female anchor in any of those cities, but I was the first female floor director at KGW-TV, Portland, my first job.

4 out of 5 stars Essential reading for those interested in Local TV News.......2004-07-19

If you have ever wondered why the local news on television looks similar from one town to the next, or how it came to be that local TV news is more important to most folks than what Peter, Dan, and Tom--or for that matter any nameless face on CNN, Fox News Channel or MSNBC have to say--then this is a must read for you.

It is obvious that Professor Allen is an academic and takes a scholarly approach to his subject matter. But his work is very accessible for the reader because much of the material was gleaned from the author's interviews with over 200 figures who were there when local news on television moved from fifteen minutes of headlines read from behind a desk each night--to the primary way millions of Americans get their daily news.

How this transformation came to be is at the core of this book.

Anyone who works in television news, or is contemplating a career in a tv newsroom should absolutely read this book. You'll get a great understanding about the multi-million-dollar business that drives most local television stations across the country.

4 out of 5 stars One of the best of the 1960s autobiographies.......2001-01-21

It's a shame that this book is out of print, because it tells the story of one man's adventures in a unique time and place in a way that is less successfully done in other such books. Mungo was there at the creation, and he (usually) doesn't gloss over the failings of the hippies' original vision. The book is witty and opinionated, well-written and amusing - and if you're interested in the 1960s you should seek out copies in your nearby library or other such repository.

Mungo's life during those intense years covered in the book (which is circa 1965 through about 1971) traced nearly the entire stereotpical path of the 1960s hippie: from the Haight to political action in Washington and elsewhere (as a member of the Liberation News Service), to a comically unsuccessful stand as a back-to-the-lander communitarian, to a wandering journey to the 'sources of enlightenment' in Asia. The book shows just how it was possible to become entirely burnt out with innovation in just a six or seven year period, and illustrates well the trajectory of the 1960s, from ideal to disillusion to acceptance.

    And it's well-written.

      Book Description

This book offers the most in-depth analysis of journalistic attention to the Supreme Court (primarily television) currently available. It combines penetrating and remarkably frank interviews with prominent Supreme Court journalists with extensive examination of videotapes of network television news coverage of the Court, to provide a comprehensive picture of how numerous constraints faced by reporters covering the Court (imposed by the nature of the television news industry and the Court itself) contribute to the pattern of infrequent, brief, and in too many instances, incorrect and misleading stories that are aired about the Court. The implications of this situation for the American public are explored.

          Book Description

Women in television news have made great strides in the past twenty-five years. No longer limited to being the token pretty face on the nightly newscast, women have taken their places as working journalists in newsrooms, on the campaign trail, in war zones, and in the highest echelons of network news management. Barbara Walters and Connie Chung have even occupied the coveted network anchor's chair, if only briefly.

In this book, 70 of the foremost women in television news reflect on their professional successes, the personal and professional sacrifices that often bought those successes, and the barriers that still confront women in the news business. Weaving their interviews into a compelling text, Judith Marlane covers a wide range of issues, including looks versus ability and experience, sexual harassment, the resistance to women news anchors, the difficulties of balancing work and family life, women's and men's salaries, and the willingness of women to help other women in the business.

This book builds from Marlane's 1976 work, Women in Television News. Interviews with many of the same women highlight the gains that women have made in broadcast journalism. Simultaneously, Marlane has expanded her range of informants to include fifteen of America's most famous male anchors and correspondents to gather their assessments of the role of women in broadcasting today.

            Book Description

Describes the shaping of an innovative nightly TV news show in Israel that was designed to operate outside the traditional format and expectations of news shows. The authors -- participants and social scientists -- are led to valuable speculations and conclusions about the nature of television news.

'It is memorable for its full-bodiedness, encompassing the three components of the television process...a superb illustration of the emergence of conflict themes in organizations...' Journal of Communication, Winter 1982

'The details of this experiment are more than interesting. The book provides the reader with a sociological portrait of how new ideas and ways of conducting businesses should be introduced into an existing organization, with existing norms, traditions and procedures.' -- Journalism Quarterly, Winter 1981

              Book Description

In recent years, communication scholars have taken a renewed interest in analyzing the audience and its impact on the communication process. Similarly, news editors and producers have often turned toward a marketing orientation which seeks to give new readers and viewers what they want, or at least what they say they want. Yet, there has still been little written about just how the audience factors into the news which is produced. Seeking to fill that niche, this book argues that audience images are quite important in the construction of news, but not easily detected. That is because journalists are not principally interested in their audience; they are interested in the news.

USE THIS PARAGRAPH ONLY FOR GENERAL CATALOGS... This volume argues that although journalistic images of the audience may be "incomplete," they do exist and powerfully help shape the work of journalists in producing journalistic texts. Using a case study of news workers and news texts at two Chicago newsgathering organizations, the Chicago Tribune and WGN-TV, this book:
              * examines notions of audience and how they have been treated by academicians,
              * presents a detailed description of the ways in which audience is embedded within the news construction process,
              * presents a very representative set of journalistic news values,
              * presents differing ideas of audience at three key levels of the news organizations -- reporters and news gatherers, editors and producers, and senior editors, producers, and news directors, and
              * seeks to summarize and position this study within the larger body of mass communication research.
