The most valuable business book I own!.......2007-08-14
I am very happy that I found and studied this book when I did. After a few years of consulting this book helped make my business more successful, confirmed ideas that took years to develop and gave a clear plan of action and procedures.
If i may borrow from Alan...

Helpful advice.......2007-05-07
In the author's own words, he goes to conferences and what-not, hoping to find just 1% of the material that helps him succeed - those hidden gems of knowledge. Is everything he talks about going to be 100% applicable and timely for you? No, but there's certainly enough "gems" in the book to steer you in the right direction. The discussions on delivering value as opposed to time are priceless.
Decent..........2007-04-06
Honestly, I was not terribly impressed with this book. After the first couple chapters, I nearly quit reading it. Part 1 of the book (the first 5 chapters) is written in such abstract terms that it was completely worthless to me. For instance, in a section on goal-setting he quotes the following as one of the best goals he has heard from a consultant, "We will undertake consulting assignments that result in direct contribution to the client's profitability as measured by quarterly results." Does this really tell anybody what the consultant actually offers to/does for a client? Quite frankly, if somebody ever approached me as a prospect and said something so bland and vague to me as an effort toward getting my business, I'd tune them out right from the get-go.
That said, he does give some decent advice for marketing (which is really the most important thing about any business, as we all learn at some point). He gives good information about how to successfully integrate speaking and writing into your business as both marketing tools and profit centers.
I'd say it's probably worth a read, but I'm really surprised by how many people rave about it so strongly.
A good read reguardless.......2007-02-12
There is a ton of information in this. If you want to be a consultant or think you may need one, read it, cover to cover. Might read tween the lines a bit :-). F&P Tech /consulting services

Customer Reviews:
Great resource for beginner consultants.......2007-06-22
This book is an excellent resource for consultants who are new to the field. Today, I have landed my first client using Alan Weiss' practical tips for success. I find the sample templates for proposals a great value as I learn what works best for me and what doesn't. I plan to use this book as a reference guide as I continue to grow my practice. I'd encourage you to purchase this book and use it to its full capability. Use this book along with others to build your library of useful resources. Great book!
Thanks Alan!
Perfect Companion to Million Dollar Consulting.......2006-10-22
This book provides templates, checklists, forms and examples for implementing the ideas, techniques and strategies from the highly successful "Million Dollar Consulting". Guranteed to save you loads of time and enable you hit the ground running every time.
Some good Guidance but not a Toolkit.......2006-07-01
This book gives some very good guidance , especially regarding insurance required for consultants, writing proposals and follow up.
If you plan to make a living by writing and giving speeches, then this book is also for you. If you are maybe in IT or Logistics and need help to e.g. write client proposals or follow up with clients, this book offers excellent advice.
However, if you are expecting this book to cover all the basics you need to know to start or grow your business, it falls short of its title. This book is definitely not a tool kit. Examples:
a) The equipment checklist is technically outdated. Apart from the fact that we are in the age of CD & DVD burners, the biggest oversight is the lack of mentioning the need for data backup facilities.
b) The section on finances is very 'thin' and only gives very top level information. You are much better off buying a separate book on this subject such as 'Self-Employed Tax Solutions' by June Walker.
c) The section on forms also covers a bare minimum. The expense form example on page 96 does e.g. not include a column for phone charges.
As examples for various forms, websites etc. Alan Weiss constantly refers to himself rather than making up some alternative examples. You can either see that as giving a successful example or pure self promotion.
Overall a useful book as long as you take some of this recommendations with a grain of salt. A title such as 'Writing Successful Client Proposals' would be more appropriate though.
Required Reading For Consultants.......2005-12-07
Alan again proves that he can put more info in 200 pages than any other business adviser. Buy it, read it, keep it nearby to refer to it.
BTW, Alan's most valuable book is "How to Write A Proposal That's Accepted Every Time." A close second is "Value Based Fees."
Excellent Book.......2005-11-28
The Million Dollar Consulting Toolkit will save any consultant a lot of time. Using the examples and templates in this book, anyone can produce flawless proposals and implement marketing plans with consummate ease. The section titled "101 Questions for Any Sales Situation" alone makes this book worth buying. This book provides all the details, which are missing in so many other books on consulting.

There's even a chapter for Introverts; a discussion of the differences between men and women; and lots of etiquette. I had had a consulting business for quite a few years and had more work then I could handle, yet was not making as good of an income as I knew I could. Then I read this book. Title and text mismatch.......2000-06-21
The title is about sucessful technology consulting. The text is a list of stuff that has been used in numerous other books. There is nothing new or inspiring. This book is written specifically for the CPA (not mentioned in the title) and is not for the IT professional or general consultant. I am returning mine today - not something even useful enough for the bookcase.
CPAs can learn technology consulting from The Master.......2000-04-18
If you plan to self-direct your startup as a technology consultant, or just want to pick up some new ideas, get some expert help. Start with a book by one of the pioneers and major innovators of CPA firm technology consulting, James C. Metzler, CPA. This partner at Gaines Metzler Kriner & Co. in Buffalo, NY, holds nothing back in How to Build a Million Dollar Technology Consulting Practice. If you don't earn back the price of this book immediately, check your pulse. The worst that can happen is that you'll buy the book and decide consulting is not for you-and that'll save you thousands of dollars too. Metzler has held back none of his consulting management and marketing tips from dozens of meetings he attends every year. It's a great bonus now to have them collected into one solid book.
