5 out of 5 stars These may be the best paper dolls.......2007-06-02

I had this paper doll book about 16 years ago when my mother was despairing at my inability to use scissors neatly, and it ended up being very helpful. I had no idea it was still in print. The illustrations are lovely and detailed, and I remember the paper being well-printed, and good quality. Dover books are usually excellent. Recommended either for the purpose I had it for, or to browse through. Great Fashion Designs of the Victorian Era also had some very nice designs.

5 out of 5 stars Twenties.......2005-04-15

Tom Tierney has put together a wonderful set of paper dolls in this book. He has beautifully traced the development of fashion during the course of the twenties. Included are sportswear, elegant daywear, sumptuous evening gowns and a fabulous wedding dress by Worth. My favorites were the fur wrap over a drop waisted dress by Louiseboulanger, a look often seen in photos of film stars of the era, and the Egyptian gown fit for a vamp like Theda Bara. I also like the resemblance of one of the dolls to Mae Murray as it adds a touch of authenticity.

I bought this book as part of a course, am reading it. The text is good for ppl new to this field of compensation and one easily gets the hang of things. The book was much cheaper than if I bought it from the regular store, and it was in great shape, no highlights, no lines, as promised by the seller.

Product Description

This compelling and innovative book is a must read for business professionals who are tired of the counterproductive environment fostered by the conventional wage and salary system. The current pay structure is guilty of undermining organizational success in countless companies. It has led to organizations with unmotivated and uninterested employees, poor strategic alignment, and ineffective management styles. In his thought-provoking book, Dr. Abernathy identifies the roots of this problem and offers a solution.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Pay for performance explained.......2003-10-14

I first read this book for a graduate psychology class and have since referenced it in several papers and given several copies to business people I know. Basically, it solves the problem of how to align people's personal agendas (pay), with organizational agendas (profit). It also makes the manager more efficient because they no longer have to supervise employees as closely. It is important to note that the system described in this book is better than typical commission or piece-rate systems. Switching to this system will increase the profits of any company bold enough to fully implement the switch. Even if you are not a fan of pay-for-performance, the first seven chapters provide an excellent insight into why people rarely perform to their full potencial in modern organizations.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent analysis of pay in a U.S cultural context........1999-06-02

This book verbalized some of the problems that I, too, (as a compensation manager) had observed within employee populations at companies in which I worked. It was particularly effective at describing the pay for time culture that is rampant among U.S. workers. The easy to read text was divided into short chapters that described not only the problem but also provided a solution through a balanced scorecard approach. One of the best books on pay that I have ever read.

4 out of 5 stars Suffering from Henderson Withdrawal.......2006-02-05

Richard I. Henderson's steadfast refusal to add value to his classic textbook more or less forced me into adopting this book. I've used Henderson for over fifteen years, but could not continue to have my students backfill the many holes in that old book.

This book is better in that respect, but does suffer from a "lightness of treatment" that I did not have to worry about with Henderson. Henderson was completely comprehensive; this book cannot claim that.

But it's a good book, and better than Henderson in its current state.

4 out of 5 stars A User Friendly Approach.......2005-10-04

Compensation is not the most popular course in the undergraduate curriculum, but this text makes it much more attractive. The examples are very easy to follow and the chapters flow well. As an instructor looking for something to make a very important topic more accessible to students, I was delighted to find this text. I highly recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars Great Learning Tool.......2004-03-23

I have seen many textbooks that are relentlessly boring due to the author's inability to balance technical and nontechnical jargon. But, this book somehow masters the ability to deliver relevant knowlege in an explicit manner. If you really want to know the foundations of compensating and you do not want to be bombarded by irrelevant wordiness, buy this book.

5 out of 5 stars At last, a text my students like! That's a victory........1999-03-04

This is a well written, comprehensive presentation of compensation and benefits, including such subjects as skill / knowledge based pay and executive and international compensation. Its features include summaries, questions with links to the www, key terms, and thought-provoking "flip side of the coin" and "reflection" inserts. Includes a useful glossary of terms. The author places considerable emphasis on current issues and that is appreciated.

I am writing as a reviewer, consultant and university instructor. I use this text in teaching my introductory compensation course at UCLA's School of Business and Management. I have tried many texts that my students bemoaned as too technical, boring, and somniferous. But my students find this text highly readable, understandable and interesting. That's a victory, especially when my students are mostly working HR professionals who drag themselves to class through the clogged freeways of Los Angeles. The least I can offer them is a good textbook; this is it!

Combining theory and research from a variety of disciplines, authors Barry Gerhart and Sara L. Rynes examine the three major compensation decisions–pay level, pay structure, and pay delivery systems.

Revealing the impact of different compensation policies, this interdisciplinary volume examines

Compensation: Theory, Evidence, and Strategic Implications considers why organizations pay people the way they do and how various pay strategies influence the success of organizations. Critically evaluating areas where research is inconsistent with common beliefs, Gerhart and Rynes explore the motivational effects of compensation.

Primarily intended for graduate students in human resource management, psychology, and organizational behavior courses, this book is also an invaluable reference for compensation management consultants and organizational development specialists.

      Book Description

There is a greater need now for competitiveness in attracting and retaining high-performing employees than at any time in the history of work. Recent, dramatic changes in the nature of the workplace -- globalization, diversification, flexible time, and telecommuting -- mean that companies can no longer afford to offer a single rewards package. Successful companies are designing packages that truly link compensation to business performance -- or they are losing their best employees to competitors who do.

The Executive Handbook on Compensation is the essential guide in this increasingly competitive world. Whether you are a seasoned senior human resource manager or are new to the field of compensation, the Handbook explains the options available in structuring a competitive, flexible pay program.

To produce this comprehensive tool, Charles H. Fay, Professor and Director of Rutgers University's Graduate Program in Human Resource Management, has joined with the Hay Group, the global leader in HR consulting for more than fifty years, and commissioned the work of the top practitioners and academics from around the world. The result is the single most comprehensive rewards guide available today.

Throughout the book the editors and contributors focus on the ideas that drive planning and on the long-term strategy behind short-term goals.

      You will learn how to:

No investment offers a greater potential for return than one in human capital, yet it is often the most neglected. Compensation is most corporations' single largest expenditure, yet they often fail to maximize their options. HR professionals can no longer afford to be behind in compensation strategy, and there is no better guide to extracting the most from the employee-employer relationship than The Executive Handbook on Compensation.

Four Steps to a Performance Driven Benefits Plan

Do you find yourself always reacting to the latest crisis in your benefits program? The latest rate increase, discrimination test failure, new compliance requirements or disgruntled employee? In this remarkable new book, you will learn a step-by-step process that will rescue your company from The Reactionary Benefits Trap.

Author Matthew Sears makes a persuasive argument that employee benefits should be treated with the same strategic resolve and methodology that we apply to other areas of business. He is up front about the fact that genuine improvements will take time, planning and effort. The results? More control over your benefits, alignment with enterprise-wide objectives, improved relations between management and employees, and ultimately greater cost effectiveness.

Not all theory, the majority of this book is dedicated to laying out a clear step-by-step process that shows organizations how to get from ignoring the problem to deal with it in an ongoing, productive manner. Sears outlines the dedicated four step process and teaches you how your business can be transformed by leaving habits behind and moving forward strategically.

Read this book and you will learn the concepts and will know how to apply those concepts to your situation. In this easy to digest manuscript, you will find all the tools you need to lead your own self-discovery Workshop, create a Vision for your benefits program, develop concrete Objectives and a Blueprint to accomplish those objectives. With 20+ years experience consulting with public and private sector groups, Sears has a knack for translating complicated concepts into easily understandable steps. The book is rounded out with helpful case studies, providing real-world examples that help to make the book's principles more concrete. Other useful features include "Teamwork Tips", "Lexicon Lessons", and "Exercise Instructions" which appear in shaded boxes scattered strategically throughout the book. All of these resources clarify the book's central concepts and enhance its practical utility.

5 out of 5 stars Making the Complicated Simple.......2004-12-24

Finally I have found a book that makes the complicated simple. Employee benefits and all of its components are both extremely important and overwhelming! Mr. Sears, who obviously is a true expert in this field, walks though a process that while in-depth is still simple to follow and understand. When looking at employee benefits I think there are three objectives most companies are looking for:
      1. Provide the best package possible while at
      2. The best price available and
      3. Save time and internal resources
The Benefits Performance Process provides the path to those objectives through real examples and with an enjoyable style. If you are involved with your companies' employee benefit program, then this book is a must!

5 out of 5 stars You can be prepared.......2004-11-14

Every Human Resources Manager, CEO and CFO needs to read "The Benefits Performance Process" and implement the plans outlined within it. Without doing so, they are simply throwing away money and valuable employees. Every company that offers benefits to its employees will want to be sure that they are doing the best that they can when it comes to providing a competitive package while getting their money's worth. Matthew Sears offers the plan to do just that. Whether your company employs 50 or 3,550, you can benefit from this book.

By "Maximizing the Performance of Your Employee Benefit Plan" you will be learning how to assemble a benefits team, analyze current plans and problems, develop concrete objectives and plan for your company's long-term success. Through self-analysis and workshop exercises your team will develop guidelines to follow. From there you will have a plan to follow that will see you through staff changes, acquisitions, and changing regulations. "The Benefits Performance Process" is a workshop to go; it is a plan to help you develop a plan that will eventually benefit your company and your employees.

Matthew T. Sears is an Executive Vice President of Athens Benefits Insurance Services and a Fellow of the International Society of Certified Employee Benefits Specialists. You couldn't ask for a more qualified guru in the benefits performance process. Yet his book is an easy to read, understand and implement guide to improving your benefits plans. Sears is straightforward and concise, while being upbeat and friendly in his text. You likely won't find another business guide like this one and why would you want to? When it comes to improving your current plans, this is the guide to follow.

Don't put off thinking about your benefits plan until the day before your renewal is due. Don't wait until the premiums are upped once again to do something about it. Don't fear the CFO telling you to cut costs by 30%. You can be prepared. If you're not, you may lose the loyal employees you have to another company who has followed "The Benefits Performance Process."

Review by Heather Froeschl of BookReview.com.

      5 out of 5 stars Practical & Thoughtful.......2004-11-06

This book gets five stars because it includes practical information I was able to implement. I hate books on theory that don't give you a sense of how to put that theory into action. We've been able to incorporate these ideas to create a process of our own.

It was well organized, easy to read!, and I loved that the author lets his personality peek through. I actually laughed out loud a couple times and you can't often say that about business books.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Approach to Employee Benefits.......2004-10-29

Heard him speak at the ISCEBS Symposium...dynamic...got the book from him there. Sears argues that we should apply strategic planning principles to our employee benefits and that failure to do so is one of the reasons they don't work right. But, more than that, he goes on to tell HOW to go about fixing it. I particularly loved the workshop method he outlines. The process outlined here actually goes beyond just employee benefits. I hope he writes a book about planning for broader business issues.

For me, it is great that this isn't a textbook..I don't have time to read those and run a business. I found this to be a lively read. He makes his point and gets on to teaching how to do it.
