This book, the fifth in Garry Kasparov's magnificent history of the World Chess Championship, catalogues the "post-Fischer" period in the 1970s and early 1980s. This period was dominated by the Anatoly Karpov (world champion from 1975 to 1985) and his three-time challenger, Viktor Korchnoi.
Anatoly Karpov gained the right to challenge Bobby Fischer for the world title by winning through the Candidates series in 1974. As is well known, Fischer refused to defend the title and in 1975 Karpov became champion "by default." Although he did not have to contest a Championship match to gain the title, Karpov proved that he was a worthy champion by winning virtually every major tournament over the next decade.
In this book, a must for all serious chess players Kasparov analyzes deeply Karpov's greatest games and assesses the legacy of this great Russian genius. Also under the microscope are the games of Viktor Korchnoi who was at his peak during this period and twice challenged Karpov for his world title.

Reviewing Karpov's life and skills from Kasparov's point of view is the most attractive experience that I've had among all massive chess books that have been studied. It's been very enjoyable.

A review of the book *AFTER* it's been released!.......2006-03-27
Let me start with the obvious question: Should I buy this book.
YES!
Here's why:
Kasparov has written a series that will keep any chess player busy for years. Yes, he made numerous errors, especially in the earlier volumes. However, he has been learning how to write as he has continued through the other volumes. He has listened to, and responded appropriately to criticisms (especially by including non-Russian predecessors in volume IV).
Volume V is factually much more accurate than any of its predecessors in part because Kasparov was alive and analysing these games as they occurred. The level of his analysis is mind-boggling, and yet he still manages to make the notations readable. Once again, he has used computers to double-check his work, and once again, he has freely used many other people's analysis (usually without crediting them). However, this is clearly Kasaparov's book, and perhaps the single best chess book ever published.
I am sure that players will find errors in this book, but that is the nature of chess and of chess books. Instead of berating the author for his oversights, I plan on having fun seeing if I can spot even one! It may take me a few years, because there is so much meat to it.
There was a review written on March 12, before the book was published, which is basically a re-hash of the old criticisms of previous volumes. I don't think the old criticisms are fair for this new volume. If the previous reviewer has specific examples of sloppiness or careless analysis, I'd like to see them. But let me repeat, I consider this the best chess book ever written.
Kasparov tackles Korchnoi and Karpov.......2006-03-13
The fifth in Kasparov's series on the world champions (and their greatest rivals) focuses on Anatoly Karpov, Kasparov's immediate predecessor and greatest rival, and Karpov's own bete noire, the great defector, Viktor Korchnoi.
Korchnoi and Karpov pose interesting challenges compared to Bobby Fischer, the main subject of Vol. 4 in the series. For starters, each has played well over 3,000 "official" games, compared to fewer than 800 for Fischer! Second, they are probably of less interest to Western readers than Fischer. But that is the readers' loss, for both are fascinating characters, as well as great chessplayers. Their world championship match in 1978 in Baguio, the Phillipines, was surely one of the bitterest, as well as most bizarre, encounters in the history of chess. Moreoever, in contrast to Fischer, who took long absences from competition and stopped playing altogether at the age of 29, both have maintained their strong play over decades.
Kasparov seems to have done a competent job showing the competitions and controversies of both men, including the manuverings that led FIDE to strip Fischer of the title and award it to Karpov, Korchnoi's 1976 defection and the subsequent "boycott" of him by the Soviet players, Karpov and Korchnoi's emergence as the leading players after Fischer's disappearance, and the eclipse of the former champion, Boris Spassky.
But the critical aspect of a book like this is the annotations. As with Vol. 4, I think the verdict is that they are excellent, with some reservations. Looking at the annotations for one of Karpov's famous wins, Karpov-Timman, Montreal 1979, I think some of the criticisms that have been made of earlier volumes still hold good -- he (or his assistant Plisetsky) relies heavily on earlier analysis by Dvoretsky and Karpov, adding what looks like a lot of Fritz-analysis to the opening. (That said, it's a great game, and Dvoretsky's and Karpov's comments are fascinating.) Turning to the analysis of some of the games from the Karpov-Spassky match in 1974, however, Kasparov's hand is much more apparent. The analysis of Game 3 -- Karpov's first victory after an opening-game defeat -- is tremendous, not just in terms of variations but in the first-rate explanation of both sides' strategic plans. I hope the rest of the analysis in the book is more like Karpov-Spassky than Karpov-Timman, but either way I am very glad to have the book.

Photography Creative Guidance.......2007-06-27
All of John Shaws books are thoughtfull, well written and aesthetically valuable. This one is specifically oriented towards Shaws photographic values, i.e. what is his view of how to photograph nature. What I took away from reading "Focus on Nature" was the abstract sense of how Shaw dedicates his techniques to achieving high quality photographs. This book does not teach creativity however. That is up to the individual.
Not Impressed.......2006-07-25
I was not impressed with this book.
Very little technical data, no data on many of the excellent images in the book.
The writting was flowery and arty rather than concise with information to convey.
If your looking for a book to teach you something, I would not recommend this book.
John Shaw's Nature Photography book is, however, outstanding.

This book has everything you expect in a John Shaw book and more.
While there are beautiful shots and a detailed descriptions of the equipment, location and the time of that the photos where taken. The book is really more about the thought process that goes into the shot, the hardware involved, lighting, lens focusing, filters types, framing and composition.
The book also details the environment weather it's a desert conditions or lush landscape, time of day and time of season and how to handle lighting, exposure and what types of filters to use based on this.
He reminds us that sometimes there will be a good shot but patience will turn it into a great shot if you a willing to wait for light conditions to change. Look at your framing and composition and deciding what elements to emphasize and what to leave out or minimize. Practicing good stewardship of the environment and making sure to leave things as you found them.
The photography in Focus on nature is breath taking as always. While the book pre-dates digital media it does not detract in any from the book because with the exception of the discussion of film everything else is applicable to the digital and film photographer.
The book cover to cover is hi-gloss paper and all photos are in color and oh-so vibrant.
I own several of Johns books and I would have to say that alll are outstanding and this is no exception.

Exactly what I had in mind........2006-03-25
This is one those truly "good" books.
I was looking for help in "seeing", or recognition of a great photo, rather than for help in photography technique. John Shaw communicates precisely this in a very lucid and concise manner. It predates digital cameras so some of the photography equipment mentioned is now obsolete. But the real point of the book is about "seeing" and capturing a great photo and that is much easier to do with digital equipment.
I almost made the mistake of buying a more inferior treatment of the subject by a different author because I had skimmed a copy and it looked helpful. I am glad I took time to read the reviews before making my purchase. When I read the reviews on that book I found positive mention of John Shaw's Focus on Nature. When I checked the reviews of his book I realized that this was probably a better choice. It is! I am delighted with this book!

Wonderful book!.......2007-03-21
Having moved out to the country, we see all kinds of critters around and I like to know what I'm seeing. Sheba the lab has also been performing her version of rodent control. Thanks to this book, I now know its short-tailed shrews she's been hunting, not voles as I originally thought. Nice to learn more about what we've got in the area. Maps and descriptions are very clear and concise and the book is super easy to use.
An Excellent Field Guide.......2004-08-02
After a disappointing look through other mammal field guides, I came across this little gem. Instead of illustrations it uses photos (except for the whales, some illustrations). I almost passed on it because I wasn't used to seeing these kinds of photographs in a field guide: they are digitally edited and have the appearance of being cut out and pasted onto the white pages. However, it soon became clear that the photos are of exceptional quality and could beat out the competetion as far as completeness of subject matter. For example: there are about fifty photos of chipmunks; there are photos of both morphs of the Arctic Fox in summer and winter. Two variations of the blue phase are shown in summer coat. The pups for both colors are included.
The book is designed well, with the text most of the time to the left of the corresponding pictures. Fun, interesting, informative.
The new standard for North American mammal field guides.......2004-07-27
This is an excellent book and is a worthy addition to the collection of all naturalists, mammalogists, and people interested in nature. Photos don't always work as well as illustrations in field guides but the Kaufman Focus Guides have rectified this situation by digital manipulation of the photos. Some larger species (whales, porpoises, and dolphins) are illustrated but also include photos. In addition to the very good photo images, species accounts appear to be well-detailed and current. One of the strong points of this field guide is that all information for a species is before your eyes; no flipping like in some other mammal field guides. The photo images are on the right side of the page along with common name and weight and measurement (non-metric). On the left side is the common and scientific names, species account, range map, and an illustration of one footprint for most of the larger, terrestrial mammals. The species accounts includes information on differentiating between similar species. Many species have multiple photos which is helpful and the young of many larger mammals are depicted. The worst of the photos (such as Alaska Marmot and Alpine Chipmunk) are still good but only consist of one image each. In my opinion, this is the new mammal field guide standard.
A wonderful field guide.......2004-06-07
A brief jargon filled synopis:
This is a very good field guide. The illustrations (actually manipulated photographs) are bright and sharp and field marks are easily distinguished.
The fact that the range maps are placed within the text (not a seperate section) makes it easy to eliminate species and arrive quickly at the mammal you are looking at.
The species accounts are informative without being wordy and the similar species are dealt with thoroughly.
The plethora of mice and shrew species are dealt with adequatley. The basic message (at least with shrews) is if you want to be sure of your identifaction, check the dental records!
I am very happy with this field guide. It is much, much better than the Peterson field guide series edition. The writing is intelligent and interesting. A great deal of natural history is included in the species accounts, so the book makes for good reading.
I am sure that mammalogists will find numerous quibbles with this book. But I am not a mammalogist. At heart I am a birder who enjoys looking at mammals when I run across them. This book is perfect for quickly identifying what chipmunk is yelling at you or for sorting out what member of the weasel family just ran over your foot.
If you are looking for a field guide to throw in your car along side all the other ones----this is yet. Enjoy.

The Caribbean islands are home to some of the most unusual species of bats. A number of them are endemic, living in no other region of the world. On Puerto Rico alone, thirteen different species have been found. Bats are the only naturally occurring mammals there; all others were introduced after settlement of the island, first by the Taíno Indians and later by the Spanish.
Puerto Rico is important for study because of its human history, tropical climate, size, relief, and isolation from the mainland. It is a useful model for understanding how historical, geographic, and environmental factors interact in a controlled environment to affect the diversity and complexity of its resident species.
This volume is the first complete compilation of the distribution, natural history, taxonomy, and ecology of the bats of Puerto Rico.
