Book Description
Although there are countless instructional books on how to bowl, there aren't any that tell you something much more important—how to correct what you're doing wrong. Through the expertise of former Professional Bowlers Association superstar Mike Durbin, From Gutterballs to Strikes provides bowlers of all levels with quick tips and solutions for correcting 101 of the most common bowling errors. Knowing how to correct mistakes is a vital part of any athletic endeavor; that's why coaches serve such a crucial role. But with the exception of top-level players, few bowlers have the benefit of personal coaching. This book lets Mike Durbin serve as your very own bowling coach. Your game will improve quickly and dramatically with his easy-to-follow corrections to bowling's 101 most common errors—from bad foot position to poor timing to improper arm swing. Mike Durbin is the only bowler to have won the sport's crown jewel, the Tournament of Champions, on three occasions. A 14-time PBA Tour champion, he was inducted into its Hall of Fame in 1984. Durbin now serves as a commentator for ESPN's coverage of the PGA Tour. Dan Herbst is the author of eight sports-instruction books, including Bowling 200+, Bowl Like a Pro, and Bowling 300. He has written articles for Sports Illustrated, USA Today, and Bowlers Journal, among other publications.
Customer Reviews:
Definitely not recommended :(.......2007-03-13
Most of the people that previously reviewed this book gave it a good rating and that's ok. I found the section on how to practice informative but for the most part the author just rants about topics that are of no importance to the reader. I read Bowling Fundamentals before reading and there is no comparison between the two. Again there a couple of sections that are ok but for the most part this book is poorly written. He should have just written a how to instead of listing 101 most common mistakes that he thinks people make, don't waste your money on this book.
Gutterballs - Strickes Review.......2006-08-17
Step by step with pictures for the beginner as well as the intermediate bowler. I have improved my recent consistancey with the timing & release sectiions. Well worth the time & money to analzye your current bowling techniques.
Easy to use guide........2006-02-24
This book is really helpful and well organized. It's easy to find topics you need to read/reread!
Stay out of the gutters without using bumpers.......2006-02-24
Having a problem with gutter balls? If so this is a great book to help you stay out of the gutters and leave the bumpers down. If you want to increase your stikes and your average this book will get you there. A must read book for everyone. Great pointers and helpful hints.
good tips book.......2005-10-18
this book had a lot of useful tips for the beginner bowler. might be a little too basic for the intermediate or advanced bowler. lot of tips which made me aware of some of my faults.

Book Description
You could learn to bowl by spending hours at the bowling alley, paying high equipment rental fees--or you could train with an expert who'll teach you simple, one-at-a-time techniques. Start by getting acquainted with the lane, the pins, and the ball. Learn scorekeeping and rules, as well as tips on warmup exercises and balance techniques. Most important is the section on choosing the right ball for you--getting the proper fit and grip, as well as gloves, wrist supports, and shoes. Then comes the special Four-Step approach that takes you through the disciplines of Setup, Stance, Release, and Follow-through. With the tactics section, you'll master strikes and spares, target pins, straight shots and hook shots, and troubleshoot your mistakes.
Customer Reviews:
Great for beginning bowler and teenagers.......2007-03-13
There is some really good information in this book for beginning bowlers; however I recommend it for teenagers wanting to get into the sport. The author and photographer did a good job of putting a lot of photos in the book to demonstrate their points. I would give this book to a kid or teen wanting to get into the sport. If you are an adult wanting to try the sport or looking for fundamental advice then buys Bowling Fundamentals, you'll be happy you did.
Great Starter Book.......2005-10-25
This book will tell you all the basics of Bowling. It was very instructive with graphics that helped explain some of the terminology that is not readly understood. I recommend it for anyone thinking about the sport to those already playing (like myself). It helped me with understanding the sport better.
Great book for all ages.......2001-11-16
It doesn't matter if you are a beginner bowler or "an expert" anyone can learn something new from this book. Well written and to the point it truely gives concrete steps to help you be a better bowler. This is a book appropriate for all ages. My children and I all use the techniques Don talks about in the book. It has improved our games all around. I highly recommend it to anyone who loves bowling.

Skills, Drills & Strategies for Bowling (The Teach, Coach, Play Series)

Book Description
"Without reservation, I highly recommend this book."--Earl Anthony
The single most important factor in bowling strikes consistently is the ability of a bowler to deliver an explosive strike ball, or the "power" ball. The secret of bowling the modern strike ball--the "squeeze" principle, or putting action into or spin on the ball--is explained clearly and simply within these pages.
Bowling Strikes also covers game fundamentals and recent equipment innovations and offers tips and strategies for mastering rhythm and timing, taking advantage of the "angle," converting difficult spares and "impossible" splits, and correcting common errors.
With more than 85 close-up photos and precise step-by-step instructions, plus special advice for the left-handed and senior bowler, this book gives all participants of the sport the confidence to take aim and up their average with ease.
Customer Reviews:
Avoid like the plague.......2005-09-19
Where do I start?
This bowling technique (the power ball) is most certainly NOT geared to the beginner or intermediate bowler. A hook ball with a medium release (thumb at 11 o'clock position) and a free armswing is more than adequate for all but the most demanding players and playing conditions (at least that was what we were taught at coaching school). The power ball would put excessive strain on the wrist and fingers.
The power ball enters the pocket at 75 to 80 degrees? On which planet does this occur? CAT analysis has shown the pros angle of entry to the pocket at a mere 5 1/2 to 6 degrees, which would be about the maximum achievable without using a rocket-powered ball (currently illegal, I believe).
This is a fairly recent book, yet some of the pictures look like they were taken during the 1950's. What gives?
The spare making suggestions have been rendered obsolete by the 3-6-9 and 2-4-6 spare systems.
The two-page section on advice to seniors was just hilarious (go bowling and make new friends after you retire - wow). Nothing on bowling itself. Bowling does change as you grow older, because the game becomes, physically at least, a bit more difficult, particularly with regards to hand strength/ball weight and knee/leg and back problems. The obvious come to mind - switch to a lighter ball, hold the ball lower in the stance, reduce the length of the steps in the approach.
I would not recommend this book to any of my students at any level. Beginning players should choose Strickland, intermediate players, Kouros.
I wasn't impressed.......2000-06-03
Bowling Strikes was off to a great start. It jumped right into the mechanics of bowling in good detail. Suddenly, after 30 or 40 pages, it just died. It almost looked like the author became bored and just wanted to throw another hundred pages on to make the book longer. A good portion was spent displaying almost every possible spare. First of all, with the title being Bolwing Strikes, was was there more space dedicated to picking up spares? I would have rather the author diagnosed precisely what caused the spare and options to correct your throw rather then spending a page on how to pick up the 6-9-10! Even stranger, the author assumes you're advanced enough that you throw a hook, yet spends several pages on ettiquette, how to score, and injuries. The first 20 or 30 pages have some helpful tips, but you're better off spending the money on practice. Best suited for someone who just bought a fingertip ball and wants to learn how to hook.
Increasing power and scores........1999-11-23
Ive been bowling for 2 years now and messed about with bowling straight then spinning the ball but my averages were always around 140. Ive had this book for 2 weeks and I now have a comfortable style and bowl 160 average (top score 210). The author tells you how to apply spin to the ball via the "squeeze"...excellent book and judy is very pretty! Nice one amazon
this book tought me all I know about the game.......1999-08-27
this book was great. It had all the info you need to know if you want to be a good bowler. all you beginners, this is a must read. It has lots of helpful tips and stratiges from todays top professionals, such as Ernie Mcrackin and Roy Munson. All of you beginners out there, I have three words for you; BUY THIS BOOK!
Will help beginners and intermediates........1998-06-12
Another nice book for beginners to intermediates. I generally find I have the same complaint with most bowling books. Not enough illustrations and drawings of the release. Showing works a lot better than just telling.
There's just not enough useful information here for more advanced bowlers who want to graduate to the 200+ range...

Customer Reviews:
Book Review: The Million Dollar Strike.......2006-09-27
The Million Dollar Strike by Dan Gutman (author of The Million Dollar Shot) is a great book for kids ages 10 and up. If you like a little horror and mystery wrapped up in fiction, this is the right book for you! The main characters Ouchie and Squishy are your average, ordinary kids. That is, until they get caught up in the mess of fixing up a bowling alley with its mental owner. Who also thinks the world is going to end on New Years Eve. While fixing up the bowling alley, they encountered a physco clown named Pinhead bent on destroying the bowling alley. To find out what happens next, you need to go read the book. I think the book was exiting and made you want to keep reading. Reading this book makes me want to read more of the books Dan Gutman has wrote.
TRASH.......2005-08-25
My 9 year old came home from school with this book one day and, man, was I glad that I read through it a little before giving it back to him to read.
The whole story is pretty much a waste of paper, but the thing that bothered me the most was all the references to rated R movies. One of the characters is a horror film junkie and gives little summaries or quotes from many movies that would scare the pants off me much less a child.
If you want your children to know about what happens in Night of the Living Dead, Friday the 13th, Monkeyshines, Psycho or just about any other popular horror movie, then this book is for you! If, like any other responsible parent, you don't, then run, don't walk, away from this terrible excuse for a children's book.
The Million Dollar Strike.......2004-12-11
Dan Gutman, the author of The Million Dollar Shot, comes back with a new book called The Million Dollar Strike. This book is hilarious. Ouchie, one of the main characters is in a Bowl-A-Rama with Squishy, another character. They have to get through the Bowl-A-Rama together. It was a bowling experience for the both of them.
I like this book because it is funny, and because it felt like I was Ouchie on the adventure. It was awesome. One thing that I didn't like about this book was that it was too short. I will give this book five stars!
The Million Dollar Shot.......2004-12-10
Dan Gutman strikes again with one of his million dollar books, The Million Dollar Strike. This book is different from the others. This book is a mystery book. Ouchie and Squishy have to get the Bowl-A-Rama looking better.
They try their hardest to fix up the place. Mr. Z even helps by paying some of his money. He uses it from his so-called "bank". But, is someone trying to destroy the place? Ouchie and Squishy are on a case to find out. Can you solve this mystery?
I thought this book was awesome. I give it five stars. I wish it would have lasted longer. While I was reading this book I felt like I was one of the characters.

Mental help for any bowler..........2007-07-05
I found the book easy to read and understand. I have applied some of the things I read in the book and found them useful and I feel over time the new approach to bowling will improve to my good.
Great investment.......2007-05-15
When ever you buy a book containing psychology, you think to say "I knew that!", but this book pinpoints the essens of bowling psychology. I've focused on several things that for sure will make me a better bowler.
very helpful book.......2007-03-06
I purchased this book to help with my bowling, since as a novice bowler,
I was dismayed by my embarrassing performance when bowling with friends.
I would bowl a strike and then have a string of gutter balls.
I found this book really helpful, not just for bowling, but for achieving excellence
in other sports. I was able to apply the lessons to other challanging areas in my life.
The book gives a comphrehensive overview of this incredibly popular sport. The writers have laid out a step by step mental
plan of action that accounts for most contigencies and can used when someone has to psychologically prepare
onself to perform at a high level.
The use of acronyms such as RALLY ( react, accept, learn, lean, yes )and the examples
of positive self talk particularly useful.
One of the best bowling books to date.......2007-01-09
I think this is one of the most up to date and detailed bowling books to date. It dives into the mental game aspect of the game and just helps you with the skills that most bowlers will need to take their game to the next level.
Not just psychological.......2006-11-06
Very in depth book on all facets of bowling not just the psychologoical aspects. Has good drills and if the drills are performed, your average will go up.
Average customer rating:
- Save your money.

Book Description
"The key to improvement is to eliminate those idiosyncrasies in your style that make it difficult for you to repeat the same series of motions shot after shot, game after game." In this breakthrough book, David Ozio, 1991 PBA Player of the Year, shows how to consistently achieve higher averages with his success-proven techniques for bowling like a pro. His step-by-step instructions and action photographs detail the fundamentals of good shot making and the systematic methods for fine-tuning your game. Just some of the tricks of the trade he shares include:
- Mastering the explosive hook ball
- Making spares off the strike lane
- Using sidewalls to full advantage
- Alternating strategies for lining up conversion attempts
- Using lane geography and the leverage window effectively
- Mastering the cross-lane strategy and the third-arrow method for converting spares
- Shooting the bucket, the washout, and the picket fence
Tips on identifying and correcting common errors, innovative practice methods, and David Ozio's "12 Principles of Better Bowling" round out this invaluable guide. David Ozio has won numerous PBA tournaments, including the Firestone Tournament of Champions, and was voted the 1991 Player of the Year by his peers. Dan Herbst is the author of several sports books, including Bowling 200+.
Customer Reviews:
Save your money........2000-05-03
There's almost nothing in this book that I could find useful. Even for a beginner this book speaks in generalisms and ambiguities. In most respects, it seems the author's position is that you should do whatever works for you with very little more guidance. I'm moving on to look for a useful book.
Still another beginner oriented bowling book.......1998-06-12
There's nothing wrong with working on the basics, but this book is very much directed to people who can't average 170.
Reviewing basics is fine and if you aren't to that 170 level you could do worse than to buy this book. If you are already better than that, forget it, save your money.
A great book about bowling by one of the world's best........1997-03-22
"Bowl like a pro" by David Ozio provides a detailed look into all aspects
of the bowling game from a pros perspective. It provides background
on the game itself, equipment, practice techniques and the like which
will benefit new bowlers and experienced ones alike.

An Innovative Blueprint for Enduring Client Relationships
More than 15 million people in this country earn their livings by serving clients, and their numbers are growing every day. Unfortunately, far too few develop the skills and strategies needed to rise to the top in a world where clients have almost unlimited access to information and expertise. Supported by more than one hundred case studies and wisdom gleaned from interviews with dozens of leading CEOs and prominent business advisors, Clients for Life identifies what clients really want and lays out the core qualities that distinguish the client advisor -- an irreplaceable resource -- from the expert for hire -- a tradable commodity.
- Experts are specialists; advisors become deep generalists who have broad perspective.
- Experts are for hire; advisors have selfless independence, balancing client devotion with objectivity and detachment.
- Experts have professional credibility; advisors develop deep personal trust.
- Experts analyze; advisors synthesize and bring big-picture thinking to the table.
- Experts supply expertise and information; advisors are educators who provide insight and wisdom.
Portraits of history's most famously successful advisors, including Machiavelli, Sir Thomas More, and J. P. Morgan, underscore these timeless qualities that modern professionals need to develop to excel in today's competitive environment.
Customer Reviews:
Its all about character.......2007-05-14
Strongly recommend this book. The professions would be better off if it were more widely read. An inspiring and enjoyable read, with interesting asides and illustrations. An anti-dote for aspiring individuals working in low-trust, money focussed organsiations.
How to Become a Distinguished Advisor.......2007-01-09
Jagdish Sheth and Andrew Sobel convincingly retrace in Clients for Life the journey that professionals can make to become extraordinary advisers to some of their clients. Their findings are based not only on their personal experience, but perhaps more importantly, on in-depth interviews with leaders of major corporations who have gained significant experience in buying services and seeking advice from professionals.
Sheth and Sobel make a distinction among expert for hire, steady supplier, and extraordinary adviser on the professional services continuum. Some professionals are sought-after advisers instead of being just an expert for hire who offers his expertise on a transactional basis or a steady supplier who despite his repeated engagements has not been admitted to the inner circle of close advisers. Sheth and Sobel call this broad-based, abiding client relationship which generates collaboration and insight a breakthrough relationship.
Sheth and Sobel have isolated seven attributes that great professionals successfully develop and integrate into a powerful whole to come to a breakthrough relationship with a client. At the bottom of the pyramid, there are selfless independence (meeting clients' needs while preserving integrity) and empathy. Knowledge depth and breadth, synthesis, and judgment represent the thinking process that is expected from an extraordinary adviser. Finally, at the top of the pyramid, there are integrity and conviction that make up the character expected from such an extraordinary adviser. Sheth and Sobel illustrate each attribute with examples that help the practitioner put their recommendations into practice.
Great professionals have to infuse everything they do with a soul of abundance (doing the right thing regardless of monetary outcome), mission, and self-renewal. Sheth and Sobel conclude their examination of breakthrough relationships with the pitfalls and dilemmas in client relationships. Not all clients are open to this type of relationship.
Essential for any consultant........2005-05-04
As a consultant, this book helped me focus on behaviors aimed at building a long-term practice rather than simply going from success-to-success. I say this not to toot my own horn (yes, I've had failures too) but rather because most decent consultants actually do OK--clients are generally happy. We appear to succeed on a regular basis. The great consultants, however, are the ones who build vocal followings...and that's where the value of this work rests.
Client Loyalty Doesn't Have to be an Oxymoron.......2005-03-28
Sheth and Sobel bring to life the concept of client relationships in a way that consultants, and other professioanl service providers, can use immediately. The value of this book is that it takes the client's point of view when discussing professional relationships, rather than focusing on how to sell services.
And, the book goes beyond theory to give the reader specific actions to guide their interactions with clients, and become true advisors to clients. The book stresses how to make the transition from a service provider to a client advisor.
The book also points out the land mines in client relationships, and how you can avoid them. An experienced consultant may find many of the concepts in this book familiar, but you may question how well you're following the authors' great advice. Those who are newer to the business will find a well-researched template for building a practice of clients for life.
Michael McLaughlin, coauthor with Jay Conrad Levinson of Guerrilla Marketing for Consultants.
This Book is a Classic.......2004-06-19
Clients for Life sets out seven key attributes or skills needed to evolve from an "expert for hire" to a client advisor. It is based on extensive interviews, conducted by the authors, with corporate executives and top CEOs about their most valuable outside professionals. The authors nicely contrast the expert for hire and the client advisor. For example: Experts tell, advisors ask great questions and listen; experts are specialists, advisors are deep generalists who have both depth and breadth; experts have professional credibility, advisors go further and build personal trust; and so on. There is a chapter on each of these attributes and transitions. I've worked with
clients for many years, and everything in Clients for Life rings true. I'd go further and say that this is one of those paradigm or mindset-shifting books. You cannot think about yourself in the same way after reading it. It raises a lot of questions about how we position ourselves with clients, and provides some good answers. Clients for Life is beautifully written. It is
honestly a must-read for anyone in fields like financial services, professional services, or who even manages large accounts in any industry.
