Customer Reviews:
Great, HARD puzzles!.......2006-04-24
I have gotten other so called hard Sudoku books and found them too easy. This one will keep you going for a long time. It has lots of different types of puzzles with the ultimate being the 16x16 grid. I would give 4 1/2 stars because I wish it were on better paper. I make copies of the hardest puzzles on better paper that can take LOTS of erasing!
Not for beginners.......2006-03-25
Wonderful. No fluff in this book. It begins with some tricky ones that actually require several minutes to finish and gets downright hard after that. Some take hours, and often I just quit one puzzle and come back to it another day.
The various shapes/styles are a great break from the 9x9 norm. The 6x6 puzzles are absolutely vicious. Nothing like kids 6x6 sudokus that take an advanced puzzler seconds to complete. And I love the jigsaw shapes. Watch out for the 9x9 jigsaws!
There should be more advanced sudoku books like this. As recommended by others, this should not be your first foray into sudoku. But once you are hooked on the light stuff, this is a nice challenge.
This books makes Sudoku even more fun.......2006-02-25
If you like Sudoku but the puzzles seem to be getting dull, try the variants in this book. Different sizes and arrangements make new puzzles out of an old game.
Excellent book for the advanced Sudoku solver.......2006-02-02
First of all, I would definitely say that if you are just beginning to learn how to solve Sudoku puzzles, I strongly suggest that you do not buy this book. Instead, I would suggest a book which focuses almost entirely on the standard 9x9 Sudoku puzzles, and which starts with easy puzzles before progressing to more difficult ones. The Big Book of SuDoku 3 starts right out with difficult puzzles, and the puzzles only continue to get harder and harder as you continue.
If you are an experienced SuDoku solver who is able to solve all but the hardest 9x9 SuDoku puzzles without too much difficulty, or if you have grown a bit tired with the standard 9x9 SuDoku puzzle, this is a great book. For me, the most appealing feature of this book is that half of the 200 puzzles in this book are different from the familiar 9x9 Sudoku. While the Maxi (12x12) and Super (16x16) puzzles are just larger versions of the 9x9 puzzles, the Jigsaw, Duplex, and Triplex puzzles actually require the solver to use different solving techniques than are used for the regular puzzles.
Overall, I give this book 5 stars as long as you're up for the challenge. While this book may not contain quite the volume of puzzles as some others, the harder puzzles can take well upwards of an hour to complete, so this book will keep you occupied for a long time.
For the above average Sudoku Puzzler.......2005-12-15
I started doing these puzzles over a year ago and I became hooked. This book is for people who have been doing them a long time, or who know they will become addicted. If you are a true beginner I would suggest the second book in this series (has a bit easier puzzles to start with up to the mega challenging. You can spend hours on some of the hardest ones, but if you are a true puzzler, that is what you want.
Customer Reviews:
Puzzles are defective - DON'T BUY.......2006-11-11
I purchased this book based on the author's reputation and was greatly disappointed. Almost one third of the puzzles in this book are defective and cannot be solved. Don't buy this book.
Not all that extreme.......2006-11-10
Carol Vorderman seems to be an excellent sudoku editor, in the sense that the puzzles she presents are usually interesting and fairly fit the stated category. Still, this book is on the easy edge of "extreme." It is an excellent book for someone reaching out to more difficult and tricky puzzles than the common "easy, medium, hard" categories. Those looking for puzzles requiring single-number solving and multiple worksheets should pass it by.
How to Solve the Tough Ones.......2006-04-24
If you have read Carol Vorderman's first book, MASTER SUDOKU, then you will be familiar with how she teaches. This volume picks up where the last one left off. What do you do when a puzzle is too hard and slicing and dicing just isn't getting you anywhere? Well, you could try the lessons in this book.
These lessons take you to new levels of puzzles. Carol clearly shows techniques for solving the hardest of puzzles. She does so in a clear and easy to understand manner. Each lesson is then followed by sample puzzles for the reader to practice their new skills upon.
But the book does not stop there. There is more to sudoku than just hard 9X9 grids. There are tougher variations and Carol takes the reader through some of the more popular variants and shows how to apply her techniques to them as well. You get squiffy puzzles where the 3X3 sub-grids have been replaced by other shapes. Sudoku 16 where the 9X9 grid has been replaced by a 16X16 grid. And then there is my favorite, killer sudoku, where the clues are given in the form of relationships between the answers. 300 puzzles are included in this volume to make anyone a true sudoku master.
The going gets tough.......2006-02-21
Another 300 puzzles from Carol Vorderman. This volume throws in some increasingly difficult 9x9 standard sudoku puzzles, together with several variations. As with her Massive Sudoku, you get 16x16 puzzles (using numbers, not letters) as well as the jigsaw sudoku variation she calls "Squiffy." The big add here are several of the variation known as "Killer Sudoku," which require some minor math to solve (as with the new Kakuro puzzles, clues are given as sums and you must deduce the number pattern from the sum provided, still following the other traditional Sudoku rules.)
Was that confusing? That, I suppose, is the value of the book - Vorderman provides solid instruction and very good solving tips for the new variations.

Customer Reviews:
SADLY DISAPPOINTING..........2005-04-05
I bought this book at a Borders store for $40.00, thinking it would be the greatest treat I ever invested in, but I was sadly disappointed after realizing how poorly constructed it was.
Naturally, I was a big fan of the movie, so my sudden impulse was to buy this companion book. Upon reading it, however, I noticed that there were several empty spaces on where there certainly could have been color photos. Also, the section on costume design was about a page long, and did not even include a single sketch of Catherine Martin's costume designs! In fact, there was little that the book actually revealed. Pretty much all of it can be found on the extra features section of the dvd. There were very few conceptual sketches, and I was very puzzled to see many blank areas throughout the book. It seemed almost as if the creators of this book were in a terrible time crunch, and had to publish this book within a few days before the deadline.
Also, there are a series of pages that attempt to retell the story of the movie, but fail miserably. The story is all mixed up, and it ends with Satine muttering her last final breath "The show must go on." What?!? That's not anywhere near to how the movie ended, nor is it what Satine would have said to Christian. Oh well...
Still, if you really must buy this book, try getting it for the cheapest price possible. I absolutely LOVED the movie, but when it came to this book, it made me wonder how Baz allowed himself to conjure up such a poorly-made product.
I love you Baz, I just wish you could have come up with something that looked like effort was put into it!
A beautiful book for fans of the movie.......2003-02-14
This is an elegantly designed, beautifully crafted photo-documentary that tries to capture the spirit and feeling of the movie. To this end, the photography is very lush and colorful, with images taken from scenes throughout the film as well as during production.
This book is NOT focused on any of the actors; buying it based on that expectation alone will lead to disappointment. (And inaccurately given/undeserved low stars...)
Those expecting an in-depth, exhaustive analysis and detailed account of the concepts and ideas behind the film will also be disappointed. While there is commentary, this is not a book for film students.
This book makes a great gift for fans of the movie and Baz in general as well.
Fantastic Photos!!!!!!.......2002-10-17
This is a photo book for not only Moulin Rouge (or precisely, Ewan McGregor) fans, but for everyone, coz the pics are so lovely in there! We can look into the behind-the-scenes stuff of the movie, and that is so interesting! I recommend everyone to buy this book NOW!!!
A Beautiful Peek Behind The Scenes.......2002-07-24
"Moulin Rouge" is one of my all-time favorite movies. I am still blown away by the depth, intensity, and flamboyance of the film. Thus, this book seemed a necessity for me. However upon reading some of the below reviews, I was skeptical about purchasing it, but curiosity won out. This purchase has proven to be a great investment.
This book chronicles Baz Luhrmann's journey of creating "Moulin Rouge". Containing vivid and colorful pictures of movie stills, behind-the-scenes snapshots, 19th century drawings, and production blueprints, it gives the reader a tiny peek into the brilliance of the entire Moulin Rouge experience. In addition, the book contains numerous interviews with key players in the production, including the choreographers, cinematographers, stylists, musicians, etc. For me, the best part was learning so much about 19th century Paris, and learning about the actual people and places that inspired many of the film's characters.
My one complaint is, the book is too short! Much more could have been included, such as interviews with Nicole, Ewan, and other main stars. (These are however, available on the DVD of the film). I also wish that many of the background topics would have been more extensive; most interviews are limited to a page or two. I could have read chapters on these people!
Bottom line: a great buy. I am even more in awe of Luhrmann et al, after reading this book.
disappointing photos.......2002-04-06
I love the movie, Moulin Rouge is (at the moment) my favorite movie of all time. I am glad to have this book, but the pictures are very poor, almost all too dark, compare poorly to the DVD. Many others are way too small, there's a fair amount of blank space in this book. If you have the DVD, the bonus material covers most of what is in the book (on Disk 2). When I read a previous review that said "The pictures are bright and beautiful" I actually went back and flipped through the book again... virtually all the pictures from the actual movie are way too dark, the shots during production are OK, and the red print on black background is unreadable (illegible). So I'd advise you review a copy before purchasing.
Book Description
Published in association with The Art Institute of Chicago. Just in time for a major traveling exhibition on Toulouse-Lautrec in 2005 comes a book that introduces the brilliant and ever-popular artist to kids.
An important addition to Abrams' growing library of acclaimed picture book biographies is the story of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, the French artist best known today for his vibrant and much-loved posters. Along with explaining the development of the poster medium, the book tells the moving tale of how Lautrec triumphed over a crippling childhood disease to become a popular artist in his day. The book is illustrated with gorgeous reproductions of his paintings, posters, and drawings, ranging from childhood sketches, to portraits of performers at the famous Moulin Rouge, to circus themes. Contemporary photographs of Lautrec and his friends bring the story to life. AUTHOR BIO: A painter as well as a writer, Robert Burleigh is the author of award-winning books for children that have been praised by Booklist as painting "mesmerizing word pictures on the page." He lives with his wife in Chicago. The Art Institute of Chicago houses more than 300,000 works of art within its ten curatorial departments.

Deserving of ongoing recommendation for any elementary-level library strong in art book holdings .......2006-01-14
Deserving of ongoing recommendation for any elementary-level library strong in art book holdings is Toulouse-Lautrec: The Moulin Rouge And The City Of Light, a survey of artist Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, who fell in love with art at an early age and was inspired to recreate Paris' atmosphere in his works. His paintings, posters, photos and drawings serve as the background for Burleigh's examination of Toulouse-Lautrec's life and makes for a unique, compelling survey.
Colorful and highly informative.......2005-07-01
This large and colorful book is a combination biography of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (1864-1901) and a look at the entertainment world of fin-de-siècle Paris. Yep, this book has everything from Lautrec paintings to photographs to pictures of posters, and accompanying it all is a clearly written and highly informative text. Though this book is intended for younger readers (ages 9-12), it makes a good introduction to Toulouse-Lautrec for readers of any age. I found this book to be quite interesting, and highly recommend it to you.

Book Description
Of interest to anyone doing research on Las Vegas in the 1950's and anyone doing research on "Jim Crow" atmosphere in Las Vegas at that time.
The Moulin Rouge Hotel was the first hotel to take African Americans... it promoted itself as totally integrated.
Customer Reviews:
When will I learn to read the reviews FIRST??.......2003-06-22
Actually, I would have probably bought this book if I had read the reviews beforehand. I worked and lived at the Moulin Rouge for a few years in the early 60's...that time period is not mentioned at all in Mr.Taylor's book! It was a most interesting place at the time...a cast of very colorful characters made it their home...to this day I believe some of the residents were in what we call today the Witness Protection Program.
I was saddened by the recent fire at the MR, not only for the historical value of the hotel, but for my own personal history as well. The book is strictly one of a kind and unless someone writes something better in the wake of the fire, it is all we have to remember her by!
The only reference out there........2001-07-18
If you want to know what the Moulin Rouge Hotel and Casino was, this book will tell you. If you want greater detail, you have to do your own search. There is not a lot of information regarding the Moulin Rouge, in general, but if you are a casino fan and love Las Vegas, this book is a must.
You need to be really interested.......2000-02-14
The book is basically 3 pages from the author, a 13 page excerpt from a paper by Roosevelt Fitzgerald at the University of Nevada, and the remainder is bad copies of newpaper clippings. The pictures are particularly hard to make out. If you have a intense interest in finding about th MR, this may be the best source, but don't expect a traditional history. For example, the author managed the place for period of time, but there about about 4 sentences relating to that experience.

Moulin Rouge is a big kick!.......1998-07-02
A thorough, exhaustive research has been put into this book and the excitment is captured very well. "The Moulin Rouge" is a love letter not only to the establishment itself, but it gives great detail to the origins of the can-can which made the Moulin Rouge famous. It is to me as thrilling as a high can-can kick! Highly reccommended.
