Book Description

Think You Know Everything about Psionics?
Think Again.

In ages past, those who wielded psionic power were ignored. Then, as folk witnessed firsthand their strange abilities, they were scorned and treated like outcasts. Over time, they have carved niches for themselves in society. Now you can rub shoulders with them at the local inn, trade with them in the bustling streets, and follow them on some great adventure. Psionic characters are everywhere, and your world is all the better for it.

This companion to Expanded Psionics Handbook builds on the existing psionics rules and presents exciting new options for psionic characters and psionic “dabblers.” In addition to clarifying concepts introduced in Expanded Psionics Handbook, it presents three new standard classes–the ardent, the erudite, and the lurk–plus a host of new prestige classes, feats, spells, magic items, astral constructs, and organizations.

4 out of 5 stars Not all bad, not all good. It depends on your tastes.......2007-05-16

First off, this is a love-hate book. Before you buy it, I suggest you try to find a copy at a place like Borders and flip through it to see if you're interested.
Second, please remember that you MUST have The Expanded Psionics Handbook ( Expanded Psionics Handbook (Dungeons & Dragons Supplement) ) to utilize this volume.

Onto business. First off, the new base classes are awesome. I have played both the Lurk and the Ardent, and they're fantastic classes. The Ardent class is not only well-balanced, it makes sense in role play (a psionic that has devoted him/herself to a particular set of 'truths,' and those truths grant them psionic powers). The Lurk is the psionic form of a rogue/[...] mix, and is intriguing to play. While I have never played an erudite, it class appears to be balanced and well-written.
I was, however, dissapointed with the prestige classes. The prestige class for Shapers is absolutely useless, and the Storm Disciple is wasted potential. It could have been a lot cooler than it is. There is another problem in that there are very few feats, if any, that expand the options of the new classes introduced.

As for feats, I am a fan of Elemental Stewards (which allows you to have an elemental companion instead of a psicrystal), but they are kind of out of place. Why a psionic would have a particular type of elemental following them around seems a little off unless it fits racially. The better option would have been to make some sort of psionic familiar template. Most of the feats somehow grant you extra power points per day, and there is an irritatingly long list of racial feats. The Illithid racial feats (and prestige classes) belonged in Lords of Madness, not this book.

However, the new monsters are really neat, and the feats that allow you to enhance your astral constructs are cool. What wasn't cool was their attempt to down-power astral constructs, but that can easily be dealt with by, well, ignoring it. The fact that this book didn't address psionic golems at all also irked me, as the EPH didn't either.

In the end, it's well worth having this book if you're looking for a couple new options for your psionic characters or looking for some slightly different base classes.

4 out of 5 stars Complete Psionics.......2006-07-09

The book lacks a little concerning the new classes, but greatly expandes the area of racial feats and psionic powers. If you enjoy playing a psionic class, this book is a great item to add to your collection.

4 out of 5 stars LOTS OF USEFUL INFORMATION.......2006-06-29

Even going back to my ancient days of AD&D in the late 1970's, the use of psionics has always been controversial. If you were somehow lucky enough to roll the percentile dice to have psionics you loved it...otherwise everyone else hated it. Now imagine 25 years later when a Psionic is its own class with sub-classes and prestige classes...my how times have changed! The Complete Psionic builds upon the Expanded Psionics handbook with new rules and classes and fleshes out a long misunderstood character and does so with intelligence and ingenuity.

The book presents the new Ardent, Divine Mind, and Lurk classes as well as a variant to the existing Psion class called the Erudite. The Ardent is perhaps the most complex and difficult to understand, as the class will follow particular principles and philosophies that will determine the powers the class receives. The class pursues various "mantles" that best represent themselves and their personalities and views on life. The Divine Mind is kind of a psionic holy warrior who is the champion of his chosen deity. The book has comprehensive listings from deities from the Players Handbook, Forgotten Realms, and Eberron settings. The Lurk is somewhat of a psionic assassin, but not necessarily evil, as the class can be good and use its powers to battle evil.

There are eight new Prestige classes and the most intriguing is probably the Flayerspawn Psychic. This class sacrifices their own humanity for the thirst for power and giving into the power of the mindflayer, eventually undergoing physical changes that makes the character take on the appearance of those deadly psionic creatures. Then there is the Storm Disciple who has the power to command the elements of nature and direct them in combat with deadly powers like Shocking Awe and Thunder Blade.

If you're a fanatic for feats then Complete Psionic is a veritable bounty...almost one hundred new feats are included in the book. Chapter four features all the reference material you will need to make use of the classes in this book including all of the various powers, mantles, psionic magic items and creatures. Chapter Five introduces dozens of new psionic monsters including psionic constructs and rules to create a Spectral Savant.

Like so many of the new Dungeons & Dragons hardcover supplements it may border a bit on overkill, but if you're into the Psionic class there is so much that is useful in here that it's definitely a must-have item for use in your campaign.

D&D/WOTC/Hasbro keep releasing 1 useless book after another. Here's the formula: reprint half old stuff from the old book, reprint stuff from Dragon/Dungeon/modules etc, add 30 pages of new garbage, repeat in 3 years...Psionics handbook 2001, Expanded Psionics handbook 2004, Complete Psionics 2006. 2 out of 5 stars Wow. Mostly a waste.......2006-06-08

I was really looking forward to this one. Man, was I disappointed.

I like psionics in the DnD game. I enjoyed the PH, and really enjoyed the XPH. This, however, was a waste of money and I'm really glad I got it on sale.

Feats: Most of the feats were class and/or race specific. I'm not sure what the problem was here, tbh. It seemed to me that the CP was an attempt to get folks to actually play some of those races? Really, it's the only explanation I could think of. Otherwise, why wasn't this material contained in the XPH?

Classes/PrCs: *sigh* I was unimpressed. Nothing that screamed "play me". The Ardent and Divine Minds are just psionic clerics, and the Lurker is just a psionic rogue. Wow. The PrC were even worse, IMO. Nothing that justified the price of the book, really. Most of them were utterly unmemorable and really boring. And I'm a PrC freak; I love the concept.

Powers: Again, nothing that really did anything for me. It seemed to be extremes; the powers seem really broken.

The rest of the book was just unmemorable. I've used that word a lot, and it's a theme for this book. "Unmemorable" is the best word I can think of for the Complete Psionic.

I thought the Complete Arcane, Warrior, Divine, and Adventurer were all good books. They all had their problems, to be sure, but they have really added to my groups roleplaying experience. We've added a Scout (Adventurer), a Dervish PrC (Warrior), Divine Contemplative PrC (Divine), and a boatload of feats have been excellent additions to the game. But myselof and my DM are both huge psionic fans, and most of the material contained in the Complete Psionic will never see the light of day in our game.

There are better ways to get folks to play psionic characters than releasing a bad book.

5 out of 5 stars Stop whining about it being "to powerful" or comparing psionics to wizards.......2007-03-07

Ok ill jump straight to it. Psionics using second edition rules (which is the correct way since third edition makes them nothing more then weak sorcerers) are not unbalbalancing in any way because of one very important aspect. All psionics have to be LAWFUL. That simple. They are not going to read random peoples thoughts, teleport into random rooms to steal, dominate or mind control anyone "just because". They need a good reason to do what they are doing, if they dont have a good reason then they are becoming chaotic and will loose access to their abilitys. A chaotic person doesnt have the discipline to do what a psion does.

In Greyhawk, Forgotten Realms, Ebberron, amd most campagins, magic is a invicable force that affects all things in a invisable weave (kinda like the Force in Star Wars) in Dragonlance they come from the moons, and in Dark Sun they come from living plants and animals, that is how mages get there power. A psionic gets his power soley from his mind, he can do just fine in a magic dead zone.

Finally psionics are not overpowered because i gurante they will not make all there power score checks when they need to, and they better have some allies there to help them. Also psionics in 2nd edition rules only have one power that can affect a group of enemys (called death field pshcyometabolics) and that comes with a great cost to the psion. All other powers are individual only, so really a 3rd level psionic has a better chance of beating a ogre then three goblins.

If you have looked at second edition youll see that the powers listed are unique in the way they work, with maitnance cost and power scores needed. Third edition psionics are just a different (wearker) type of sorcerer. Power may come from the mind but it does the exact same stuff. I run 3.5 edition campaign but use 2nd edition psionics. basically you use the chart giving in the 3.5 psionic handbook for skill points, feats, save throw, etc. but for the powers you use the 2nd edition handbook. To calculate a saving throw for a target I use this formula. 1d20 + penalty to power check + main stat modifier = will power save DC.

For example John the telepath is going to use psionic blast on a ogre. John has a wisdom of 18. Psionic blast is Wis -6. First he uses contact, since this power cant hurt the ogre i dont allow a saving throw (you may if you like but thats up to you) then the next round he rolls a d20. (wis of 18 - 6 = 12) he needs a 12 or lower to even activate the power. If he rolls higher then a 12 then the power doesnt even attempt to work, if he rolls lower then the power works. Assuming it works lets see if it hurts the ogre, he gets a Will save to ignore it. Save DC is 1d20 + 6 (the penalty to the power score) + 4 (wis mod). If you wanted you could just say that the d20 roll is allways a 10 (like magic works) but i find that using a random roll on every save makes psioncs feel different to.

I have more to add but I think ive written way to much, if youd like to comment good or bad, go nuts

5 out of 5 stars How Psionics should be.......2003-01-05

This is the start of psionics in 2nd Edition. It is far surperios than the d20 version, which is absolute "garbage". Better abilities and much nicer, although some are overpowered.

Translate this into the d20 similar by making it similar to the Forbidden Kingdoms system, as psionics should be skills, not spells.

4 out of 5 stars Good, but not necessary.......2001-06-06

This book is great for AD&D players and Dungeon Masters alike. However, everything you can find in this book is also found in the Player's Option: Skills and Powers book as well. Save your money for the Player's Option book; the complete psionics handbook is a waste

5 out of 5 stars Psionics Rocks.......2000-07-10

This book is worth the buy, I was realy wanting to know what was contained in it and it was worth it. Buy this book it is extreamly useful in D&D especialy for Dragon Psionist but it's worth it.

4 out of 5 stars Unorthodox and innovative - careful integration is worth it!.......2000-06-09

The PHBR (Player's Handbook Reference) series is one of the most highly-regarded, and yet much-maligned, series of supplements ever created. Each sourcebook takes one of the races or classes of the AD&D game, and adds to it huge amounts of new detail - new equipment, spells, kits (sub-classes), lore, new rules, etc. The problem is that the players love these so much that the DM often feels compelled to buy into the rest of the series - an expensive proposition! Fortunately, these works were "reprinted" in the excellent AD&D Core Rules CD-ROM. This one introduces the powerful and alien class of the Psionicist - if you are not running a Spelljammer or Dark Sun campaign, you will want to think VERY carefully before allowing this class to players! The power and versatility of these characters is amazing. Details of this book include: the Psionicist class and restrictions, a full explanation of psionic powers, disciplines, and advancement, special abilities, the powerful Wild Talents, psionic combat (a great system), the great powers (Clairsentience, Psychokinesis, Psychometabolism, Psychoportation, Telepathy, and Metapsionics), running a psionics campaign, and great monsters! It's a wonderful book - and used carefully, it will add a whole new dimension to your games.

          Book Description

The year 1956 marked a point when British drama and theater fell into the hands of a group of young playwrights who revolutionized the stage. During that time, playwrights such as Samuel Beckett and Harold Pinter made the British theater as rich, varied, and vital as any national theater in history. This reference chronicles the history of British theater from 1956 to 1995 by providing detailed information about the playwrights of that period. Included are entries for some three dozen British playwrights active between 1956 and 1995. Entries are arranged alphabetically to facilitate use. Each entry supplies biographical information, the production history for particular plays, a survey of the playwright's critical reception, an assessment of the dramatist's work, and primary and secondary bibliographies. A selected, general bibliography at the end of the volume directs the reader to important sources of additional information about this period in theater history.

              Book Description

In this expanded analysis of Macbeth in performance, Bernice W. Kliman examines a number of major productions of the play on stage and screen, inviting the reader to contemplate and compare directors' and actors' choices for what is arguably Shakespeare's most compelling play. Kliman's in-depth analysis of Orson Welles's 1948 film version as well as his earlier stage production, Roman Polanski's famous film, and several different television versions from America and Britain offers an invaluable guide to the most prominent performances across a range of media. She also considers Yukio Ninagawa's staging, which provides an exciting and novel Japanese perspective on the play for Western audiences.

              Book Description

A History of Shakespeare on Screen: A Century of Film and Television chronicles how film-makers have re-imagined Shakespeare’s plays in moving images from their earliest exhibition in nickelodeons to today’s multi-million dollar productions shown in multiplexes. Topics covered include the silent era, Hollywood in the 1930s, the films of Laurence Olivier and Orson Welles, the transgressive cinema of Jarman and Greenaway, and the renaissance of the Shakespeare film with Kenneth Branagh in the 1990s. The book is truly international in scope, looking not only at screen adaptations in the UK and the US but also at the films of Kozintsev, Kurosawa, Zeffirelli and others. A filmography, bibliography and index of names make it invaluable as a one-volume reference work for specialists, while its accessible style will ensure that it appeals to enthusiasts and film-goers as well as to a more academic audience.

                  Book Description

Angela Carter is best known for her novels, short fiction and journalism, but she also produced a substantial body of writing for media other than the printed page, including five radio plays, two film adaptations, an original television documentary and a number of unrealized scripts for stage and screen. Despite increasing academic interest in Carter's work, these dramatic writings have largely been ignored. In this book, Charlotte Crofts redresses this lack of critical attention by examining Carter's dramatic writings together for the first time (including two unpublished works), giving them a more central position in the Carter canon.

                    Book Description

                    S. P. Mackenzie examines in depth for the first time the origins, development, and reception of the major dramatic screen representations of 'The Few' in the Battle of Britain produced over the past seventy years. It explores both continuity and change of presentation in relation to a wartime event that acquired near-mythical dimensions in popular consciousness even before it happened and has been represented multiple times over the course of the past seven decades. Alongside technical developments, considerable social, cultural, and political fluctuation (as well as an expansion of factual knowledge concerning the battle itself) occurred in this period, all of which helped to shape how the battle came to be framed at particular junctures. The ways in which the Battle of Britain was being represented in other fictional forms as well histories and commemorations form part of the context in which screen representations are explored.

Films discussed in detail include The Lion Has Wings, First of the Few, Angels One Five, Reach for the Sky, and Battle of Britain, along with the television productions Piece of Cake and A Perfect Hero. Foreign productions, such as A Yank in the RAF and Dark Blue World, as well as abandoned projects and dramas in which 'The Few' feature in a more tangential fashion, are also mentioned in context. The emphasis throughout is on production issues and the extent to which these screen dramas reflected or influenced popular understanding of 1940. The Battle of Britain on Screen is therefore a contribution to the growing scholarly literature on how the Second World War has been remembered and represented within the United Kingdom.
