      3 out of 5 stars "New" Battletech?.......2005-04-17

While the additional weopens are interesting, I have playtested scenarios where the Clans have been running a Right of Possesion for an out of the way planet and they are attacked by another player for the planet's possession - they called themselves Renegade Centurions. How did these odd things get here, and what is this about The Empire of Terran Overlords (from that other game RENEGADE CENTURION @copyright)? Those are tanks??? THOSE ARE TANKS!! Just one squad of tanks; One heavy, and two mediums. The Mechs' weopons just don't seem to have much of an affect on the tanks, but those tanks - Just ONE Shot spelled doom for a Daishi. They aren't playing by the Clans' rules -- or maybe it's that the Clans aren't playing by the newcomers' rules. You decide what comes next.

5 out of 5 stars True Battletech book........2003-04-25

Master Rules covers and even replaces most of the rules this book but its so well orgnised and comprehsive it does fall into the famed 'Must Have' catagorie. Also, who reading this dosn't want that cover as a huge poster hanging on there wall?

      4 out of 5 stars Proof Positive!.......2001-02-07

At least, in that FASA has charted out the Battletech universe for a while. Why? If you look in the Field Manual series (go ahead, check out FedSuns and Lyrans, I'll wait...), you'll notice they include new technology. Most of this new tech was included in MaxTech, except for the Lyran new stuff.

Basically, this is, as they say, an official house rules book for Battletech. They add in a bevy of alternate rules, new accessories (Light Gauss Rifle, Medium-Range Missiles), and new systems (gasoline-powered AgroMechs, anyone?).

It's a pretty decent book. Most of the new equipment is experimental, and not that useful, but could be fun for short-term use. They also include a nifty Battle Value Calculator, and give ratings to each and every published 'Mech and vehicle as of printing. There are also nifty tables listing every single thing you could possibly put on a 'Mech you're building, which is also helpful.

If you play Battletech, this is a useful purchase. It's not a must-have, but I'd recommend it.

      4 out of 5 stars Even More???.......2000-12-21

The book had tons of new rules for myself since I invent systems, weapons, and forces nightly (like multi-launch gauss rocket systems and anti-g) this started it all for me ( got before the BT MRules book).

      4 out of 5 stars level 3 rules.......2000-03-28

A plethora of rules add on to expand your game. Take as much or as little of it on as you want. Admittedly, if you used every rule in it your turns might never end. highs: the rules for artillery make them conform more closely to real world. the expanded terrain is cool, and the modifiers for movement over 10 is included! Lows: the modifiers for the movement of the fastest units can make them quite literally impossible to hit.

2 out of 5 stars First things first - terminal performance objectives, audience analysis.......2006-05-02

                  ....

This book can be very helpful if you've done your homework about the performance needs and the audience first.

                  IF YOU

                • Identify what specific on the job performance needs exist for the audience; and whether and how to address those needs through a training session, and

                • Identify the characteristics of the audience so you know what appeals to them in a training session,

                • THEN

Select games from this book if they are appropriate to the terminal (on the job) performance objectives and audience analysis.

This book won't do that for you.

                  Nor tell you how.

                  Nor even tell you whether.

                  5 out of 5 stars I like it!.......2001-03-09

So many training guides merely compile the same old activities that have been circulating forever. I was glad to see some really unique activities in here (even though it first came out twenty years ago!). I also found the trainer's introduction pertinent and helpful.

If you work in an international context, you'll be especially pleased. Many of the other game compilations have activities that are language (puns, play on words) or culture (trivia) based. This volume seems relatively free of such nonsense.

It's not the sexiest book you'll pick up. The format and design are simple, even stark. Nevertheless, for sheer fun for your buck, you'll have a hard time beating it.

1 out of 5 stars Games Trainers Play.......2001-01-13

I was really looking forward to getting this book and was so disappointed when I got it. I don't see how anyone could rate it at 5 stars. It was dry and boring. There are better books out there than this one. I even met Ed Scannell last year in Austin. I'm just gled that he is not as boring as the book.

5 out of 5 stars Old, but GOOD.......2005-03-16

This is a great resource for anyone who conducts training sessions, seminars, conferences, or informal meetings of any sort. No frills, just lots and lots of ideas...some to use as is, some you will want to adapt. I've used dozens of these games and every one made the point I wanted to teach. A true classic.

                  4 out of 5 stars Good Resource.......2003-01-28

This really is an excellent book for finding activities to add to your training sessions. There are a lot of great games in this resource. The games are listed by subject matter to make it easy to get right to where you want to go and the games are just as relevant as they ever were.

The only reason that I didn't give it a five is that I don't care for the typeset and overall presentation of the book, but these things are easily overlooked when you find a great new activity.

                  5 out of 5 stars STILL A GREAT CHOICE.......2000-06-24

Don't be put off by this book's 1983 publication date. It is still one of the best sources of icebreakers and other training exercises. It's value?--the book's not just for professional trainers. It can be used by just about anyone who needs some ideas about what to do when you get up in front of a group--any group. It's not cluttered by lectures or lengthy explanations. You just jump right in and flip through the samples. It's even fun just to browse. This is the second in a series of training game books by Scannell and Newstrom. Look at one and you'll probably want all three!

The best thing about The Complete Games Trainers Play is its sheer size. Actually, it isn't nearly as big as some reviews imply. It is really around 1000 pages, not 2000+. And for some reason, a significant percentage of those pages are left blank. But even with that caveat, this is still a sizable resource.

If you are willing to devote 30+ minutes to finding an activity, you are sure to find one (or five) that are ideal for your training event. The fact that individual "games" can be removed from the ring binder is also helpful. This allows you to use the activities without carrying the whole book around, and to easily photocopy sheets for individual participants as some activities require.

However, there are some significant downsides. There is no real way to find appropriate activities without flipping through virtually the entire book. A large number of the activities aren't very good. And, most of the book is in a strange "typewriter" typeface that makes it look like it came from 1972. (Oddly, there are some pages which are randomly sprinkled through the book that use a different, more recent-looking typeface.)

To really upgrade its usefulness, Games . . . would benefit from taking a leap into the computer age. In other words, along with the printed book, a computer CD should be included. This could feature a good, searchable index, which is now lacking. It would also make it possible to print out games, and modify handouts on the computer to your organization's needs.

I've never bought any other resources like this, so I can't say if this is better or worse than others. I can say that in spite of the steep price and the drawbacks, I'm definitely glad I purchased it. It was very useful to me, and will be again in the future. However, there are a few simple steps the authors and publishers could take to greatly improve it.

                  5 out of 5 stars Trainers Dream.......2006-11-03

This is a great tool of Trainers. Keeping your trainees engaged throughout the training is always a challenge. This tool give creative ways to assess retention of information. The games are great and the administrative forms and suggestions are wonderful.

4 out of 5 stars Lots of games here.......2004-12-08

People love playing games a lot more than listening to lectures; this is indisputable. I didn't like all of the games listed here, but so what. Several I found helpful and intend to use.

                  2 out of 5 stars Not Impressed.......2003-09-30

Although there is a lot of information packed into this book, I was very unimpressed with the layout and visual design. It looks like it was typed up in 1970. The graphics are ancient and the layout is just one big binder with no cross-referencing or indexing available. To find a useful game, you have to sift through hundreds of pages. It really is a shame, as there are some clever games here to loosen up an audience.
Frankly for this price, I expected something a bit flashier and filled with reproducibles that I would want to copy and hand out. The way it looks now, and with it's unwieldy format, it's going to sit on my shelf.
If I hadn't spilled water on it, I would have sent it back for a refund.

4 out of 5 stars The Complete Games Trainers Play.......2000-05-23

This book was helpful in planning an in-house managment training session. The book is divided into sections making it easy to locate games targeted at specific areas. The book is actually a 3" 3 ring binder. It is a large book, however, it does contain a wealth of information.

Get any training session off the ground fast-- or jumpstart one whenever it lags--with the more than 400 proven activities in the bestselling Games Trainers Play series. Their names may range from ``Tombstone Planning'' to ``The `Nobel' Prize Winner,'' but these brilliantly offbeat, unexpected, disarming, fully reproducible games have one serious mission: to coax even the most reluctant groups to talk, laugh, think, and work together. Page after page of fun, easy-to-plan tear-out exercises help you: break the ice and get participants acquainted; shake up outworn habits and perceptions; challenge with thought-provoking brainteasers; test learning and retention; develop communication and listening skills; bring out and involve participant-leaders; win back lethargic, distracted, low-energy groups; encourage creative problem-solving; boost or reinforce a group's self-image; forge cohesive work teams that value group effort; facilitate transfer of training to the job.

                  4 out of 5 stars a pretty good buy.......2002-08-19

The games in this book require few props, which is one reason i like it. However there are many numerical and verbal exercises which might not be suitable for all groups. The games are well classified and easy to find in the book. The ones on creative thinking, learning and communication are particularly good. I work with students and have used many of the games with success. This book can be used for any type of audience, overall it is a pretty good buy.

4 out of 5 stars Recipe for one WILD office Xmas party.......2002-12-19

After we heard what a crazy holiday party the auditor's office was planning, our agency was determined to outdo them, so we hurriedly formed a committee to study the problem and suggest workable plans of action. After rejecting several alternative ideas (such as duckpin bowling and tea at the state museum) we decided to really cut loose and order pizza at lunch time. Supplemented with soft drinks from the machine in the lobby, no less! Everything was set for the best holiday party ever.
When (after days of waiting) the magical day and hour arrived, we all sat down to enjoy our lunchtime celebration when the realization hit: the only way we were going to have fun and interesting conversation was if we actually talked to each other!!
For a few agonizing minutes we silently munched on our pizza and considered the grim situation, until (in a moment reminiscent of the deus ex machina device of Greek theatre) one of our number arrived late, a Santa cap jauntily perched on his head, an easel and flip chart under one arm, and THIS BOOK under the other (he had a magic marker too, but I don't really remember where he was carrying that - perhaps in his pocket protector?). The party was saved!
Now when the folks from the auditor's office show off this year's crop of photocopies of their faces and other body parts, we'll have some stories to tell them about how much fun a REAL party can be.

Like a Rocky sequel, this book doesn't get it. It would be useful with children and young adults, but I could not use it with high functioning adults. Had I not been in a hurry, and had reviewed the book, I would not have purchased it.

As an OD consultant, I have read many books on team building activities. From most books I typically like one out of five exercises. Games Trainers Play Outdoors is awesome! I like every exercise. They are practical and open to adaptations as needed by the audience. I strongly recommend it.

I stumbled across this book and found it to be quite a treasure. I am a youth leader for our church and found these games to be ideal for building unity and having fun together. There are 75 games in all. The games are well illustrated and explained clearly. This is a great resource for fun, purpose-filled games for many age groups.
