Book Description
Omaha poker is fast becoming the game of choice for action players and a prestigious event at the World Series of Poker. Clearly-written strategies and powerful advice from Cloutier and McEvoy-who have won four World Series of Poker titles in Omaha tournaments-show players the rules of play, best starting hands, strategies for the flop, turn, and river, how to read the board for both high and low, dangerous draws, how to win at low-limit and high-stakes games, how to play against loose and tight opponents, and the differing strategies for re-buy and freeze-out tournaments. Players learn the best starting hands, when slowplaying a big hand is dangerous, what danglers are and why winners don't play them, why pot-limit Omaha is the only poker game where you sometimes fold the nuts on the flop and are correct in doing so, and overall, how to win a lot of money at the game!

Made my game!.......2007-05-17
I've been playing poker for sixty years but had never played Omaha. After reading this book I went online (Ultimate Bet)and was amazed. If you like Omaha online buy this book!
Will improve your omaha gave for sure.......2007-01-20
The ideas are good and clear.
Will improve your Omaha game.
Highly recommended.
A Rare Find.......2007-01-08
There is very little information available about the games of Omaha and Omaha high-low-split-eight-or-better (O8 for short) so this book is a rare find. The content is very straightforward and to the point, covering different forms of Omaha well. But it is not just a dry reference book, it was very entertaining. Which is good, it helps to keep you interested, focused and learning. I recommend this book to anyone looking to learn the game, or even just to improve their game.
Experienced players, this book will help refine your skills.......2006-12-20
This book is perfect for the experienced poker players who want to refine their skills. Not recommended for beginners.
Take it from multiple-pro-tournament winners T.J. Cloutier and Tom McEvoy: Starting hand selection and flop reading are the two most important skills to develop for becoming a good Omaha and Omaha Hi-Lo Eight-or-Better player.
They give you lots of example hands and flops, and explain what to avoid ("danglers") and what to seek out ("Acey-deucey").
A little jargony, but the detailed information as well as Cloutier's hilarious old-school stories make up for that.
It really helped me understand the various incarnations of Omaha and gave me a fighting chance against my buddies on poker night!
Good pointers.......2006-07-01
I enjoyed reading the book and got some good pointers. The section with advice on how to play certain hands depending on the format of the game (hi-low split, high-only, pot-limit or no-limit) is especially good. Also some good post-flop tips. The only negative I had was having references to a different format in the chapters for a particular format. For example, in the chapter on hi-low, saying you would play a certain hand in hi-low, but not in pot-limit. In other words, although good advice is given, I would prefer staying on the subject being addressed.
Book Description
This absolutely essential guide is the only book completely devoted to how hands are actually played at tournaments, and thus, a must-buy for the millions of players. Two tournament legends show players the key concepts and thinking behind 100 actual hold'em hands-including 45 pivotal champion hands! Readers learn how to use key poker concepts and develop their intuitions as they work their way through 57 limit and no-limit hold'em practice hands and 45 key hands as played by champions in turnaround situations at the WSOP. Players gain tremendous insights into how tournament poker is played at the highest levels by champions.

Good advice but could be more tournament oriented.......2006-04-09
Firstly, I have to say that the credentials of the authors are absolutely unquestionable. Each author has had a very illustrious career playing tournament poker. However, the effort to translate their experience and knowledge to the written page has met with limited success. There are several key issues which prevent me from giving this book a higher rating:
(a) They combine limit and no limit hold 'em into a single volume - limit and no limit are completely different games and to cram them both into a single book demonstrates lack of foresight. It is possible much of the audience will only ever read half the book
(b) Very little of the book is devoted to outlining the different strategic considerations between cash games and tournaments. In tournament poker, it is critical to consider your stack size relative to other stacks as well as your stack size relative to the blinds. Playing Ace-King in a deep stack situation is very different to playing Ace-King in a shallow stack situation.
(c) Cloutier and McEvoy advocate a very conservative style. Whilst the book is meant to be a guide to how they play poker, I still think it is important to consider alternative styles of playing. For example, they advocate always checking Ace-King when the player has missed the flop. However suppose you play an aggressive brand of poker and you are acting behing a single, conservative opponent who has checked the flop. In this case a bet may be warranted. Subtle nuances like this are not discussed in sufficient detail.
(d) Some of the hand discussion is outright poor. For example, the treatment of middle pairs is very shallow. The book basically says "if there is any heat, get out". It doesn't discuss important issues such as position, texture of the flop and so forth.
At the end of the book there is a discussion of key hands from the World Series of Poker which I did enjoy. Overall, the book does provide some very solid advice but its primary drawback is that it takes a "cookie cutter" approach and doesn't discuss many of the subtleties of the game.
GG.......2005-10-17
Good format. It is in an easy readable format to follow. I beleive its for the medium to advanced player. You need to have a working knowledge of the game. I have read many hold'em books and found this book to be the most sound. His approach and style are basically conservative, although he touches on the aggressive and super aggressive players. His explanations and reasoning on his methods are stellar and highly analytical. Throughout the entire book you will find buried treasures. You will not be able to put this book down.
Same material as Championship No Limit & Pot Limit Hold 'Em.......2005-03-12
I really enjoyed Championship No Limit & Pot Limit Hold 'Em and was looking forward to reading this book. The book is about 1/2 limit hold'em hands and 1/2 no-limit hold'em hands. The no-limit hold'em hands are the same as the material presented in Championship No Limit & Pot Limit Hold 'Em. So if you are looking for different material on no-limit, this book is not it. It also contains actual hands played from many different WSOP championships, which are interesting. It's a good book, just not much different from Championship No Limit & Pot Limit Hold 'Em.
Great book for tournament players........2004-04-09
I bought this book a couple of months ago and found it to be an excellent book. Read this book first before reading a book like "Tournament Poker for Advanced Players" by Sklansky. This book will teach you how to play all the different hands in different postitions. It also has some great analysis of key hands played at the World Series of Poker.
Book Description
Endorsed by more than five world champions and rated by pros as the best book on tournaments ever written, this is a must for every player's library. Packed solid with winning strategies for all 11 games in the World Series of Poker, with extensive discussions of 7-card high, high-low, lowball and razz, limit, pot limit and no limit hold'em, Omaha high, high-low and pot limit. Also includes re-buy, half-half, satellites, supersatellites, and mixed game, and strategies for each stage of tournaments, big player profiles, and answers to frequently asked questions about handling difficult situations in tournament play.
Customer Reviews:
Disappointing.......2004-04-01
More like a diary of some of Tom's successes (and he has had many) but only a few anecdotes. Buy one of TJ Cloutier's books (or Slansky's) for much much more insight.
The 7-2 Offsuit of Poker Books.......2004-03-29
I don't know who this book is supposed to be for. Certainly not someone who wants to learn any of the featured games. It's assumed you already know the games well. Certainly not anyone already playing much tournament poker. Perhaps the delusional player who is just starting to play in tournaments and wants to play in every available event at once. The book is just silly. There are a grand total of 20 pages on no-limit hold 'em for example, and most of those are repetative. In other words, Tom easily could have put 10 pages that say the same thing into the fine book he co-wrote with T.J. Cloutier. The "advice" mostly consists of Tom rephrasing the very problem you probably wanted answered. In the brief section on strategic concepts, for instance, Tom repeats in several different sections the need to stay calm and guard against making errors based on personal dislike of an opponent. He says things like take a deep breath after a bad beat (well, duh!). What he doesn't say, are things like how to adjust your play if you've got a very aggressive player to your immediate left (which is useful to know). He says things like "The champions know when to push a marginal hand and when to back away from it," but makes no attempt to try to quantify how or when they know this. So it isn't very helpful. The chapter on playing poker as a business is probably useful, except it's only useful if you're good in the first place and if you are you aren't reading this book, you're saving your $30 and playin poker with it. There are much better books out there and unless you are going to run right out and enter tournaments in every event, pick up a book that deals with the game in which you want to excel and stick to that. The stuff in here you can find in articles on-line, or figure out playing poker on-line.
Not that great..........2004-03-12
I was expecting something a bit more detailed and better than Slansky's Tournament poker book. Unfortunately I was let down. There's not much "advice" nor many concrete examples. Instead we're treated to a few anecdotes and a spare "key concept" here and there. I'd spend my money elsewhere.
Book Description
The super popular satellites-small entrance fee tournaments where the winner earns entrance to the main tournament event-often worth $5,000-$10,000!-are the most popular events in poker. In 2003, Chris Moneymaker earned the $10,000 WSOP buy-in through a $39 internet satellite and won $2 million and the tournament! You can too! Players learn 10 ways to win entry to big tournaments, how to win limit, no-limit, one-table, online and super satellites, and how to play the final table. Insider tips on betting strategies, pressuring opponents, discovering bluffs, playing deceptively, and chip leverage. Bonus chapter on no-limit hold'em satellites!
Customer Reviews:
Decent.......2007-02-19
Relays basic strategy but doesn't tell you how to satellite in other than how to enter
Useless.......2006-12-12
Don't bother spending your money on this. The five pages on satellites in Lindgren's book far outweigh any content in this...its mostly just stories of past satellites with some obvious advice thrown in (auto-checking online is a tell!!! thanks for that)
Not as good as his other books but worth a read.......2006-11-04
I am a big fan of McEvoy's books, probably because I tend to play poker in more or less the same fashion that he does and also generally specialize in tournament play. This book is good, but not on par with some of his other books, such as Championship Poker, etc. I think my biggest disappointment was two-fold: There was a substantial chunk of the book devoted to satellite and super satellite play for limit events (which I don't play at all, and seems on the fringes since most premier events are no limit), and the section on internet satellite play was small. I would have liked to see more content there, especially since this is where most people buying this book will be playing there satellite play. Yes we all know how Moneymaker turned $39 into $2.5M, but it would have been nice to have more in-depth discussion about accomplishing that, especially in extremely low-buy in super satellites with large fields. I did find some useful information in this book I hadn't found elsewhere (the mark of a good poker book in my opinion) so I would recommend it to anyone thinking about using some portion of their poker bankroll as a springboard into large, big-money tournaments.
Nothing new.......2006-08-26
This is mostly a rehash of general tournament advice. If you read everything, you will want to read this, since it is good advice. But if you are pretty experienced, you probably won't learn much.
Delivers as promised.......2005-05-27
If you have never been to the WSOP and plan to play a satellite for your entry you should read through this book at least once. While the online sections can leave a little to be desired, there isn't much difference it strategy or information, I recommend this book to anyone with questions about satellite play. It will cover your basics and break down each tournment into stages so you can focus on one piece at a time.

FABULOUS BOOK!.......2007-06-20
This book and its sister book, More Words... -- are the handiest and great must haves in my editorial and office service business library! I highly recommend them!
Great Canned Words/Phrases.......2007-05-12
This is a book in which the author has collected words and phrases from different sources over time and made into a book - a great collection at that. If you are looking for some great ideas - this book doesn't have any. The book is divided into 4 sections; Grabbers, Descriptions and Benefits, Clinchers, and Special Strategies. And the painstaking collection of various words and phrases collected over time are shown under each head with the bulk of book taken up by the Descriptions and Benefits. A must have book by your side if you are groping for words or phrases while writing a business letter, etc. Had I been a copywriter I would have given the book 5 stars.
Great for writing copy.......2007-04-05

this a a great book to pull down and look

Very Helpful.......2007-02-07
Recently I bought this book and immediately made some textual changes to my company website based upon the contents of this and "Hot Button Marketing" by Barry Feig. The two mixed together have already begun to pay dividends in terms of conversions of visitors into prospects which will lead to customers and/or partners.
The lessons I learned as I read some of the material:
1) You may believe you're using the right words to sell (as I did prior to reading over the book), but there are always improvements that can be made.
2) Have fun--if your current campaign isn't working as well as you'd like, tweak the copy by using some of the suggestions in this book to see if a different word sprinkled in here and there improves things. It's interesting to see what a little change can do as enough of them can add up to one big success over time.
In a nutshell, this book is a great reference to have handy regardless of what you're selling.
Pump new life into your copy and sell more.......2006-12-14
I've been a copywriter for 14 years, most of the time as an independent practitioner. I've also been a senior copywriter for an advertising agency and worked in the creative department for a major newspaper.
The expanded edition of "Words That Sell" by Richard Bayan gets to the heart of an issue copywriters and marketers constantly face: How can we communicate the same old tired ideas in new, different and even exciting ways?
For example, I can't tell you the number of times I've been asked to position clients as experts in their field. There's nothing wrong with that -- they truly are experts. But we're all besieged by experts. (The fill-in-the-blank experts. And so on.)
Bayan offers a list of 75 or so entries for communicating experienced or expert. And throughout the book he provides hundreds of entries for many other common copy points and marketing messages.
Besides supplying a good resource, Bayan provides a good reminder that to be memorable copywriters and marketers must write it, say it and show it in a fresh, interesting way. And that usually requires at least a little extra creative effort.

Good for copywriters. It is literally just a book full of different types of words and phrases. Not really an exciting read but I guess if you're searching for a certain phrase this might help.
Terrific tools for beating writer's block.......2007-07-28
As a professional copywriter, I've often found myself stuck on the same few words and phrases. When I need a fresh idea I regularly turn to this book. It's a great way to beat writer's block, or find words that hit just the right tone and voice when you write.
Sure, some folks complain the lists are obvious, simple or too salesy. But when you have to write a lot, or you don't write very often, both this and the companion book Words that Sell, are worth their weight in gold.
If you write anything, buy this book........2007-03-30

Good companion.......2005-09-21
If the wording of this is very close to my review of "Words That Sell" by the same author, that's because they're both good, and very similar, books - both very useful if you're in selling or marketing. Generally based on common sense, with minimum hype, and arranged in chapters that make it easy to zero in on what you need. The additional sections, on copywriting for example, and the appendices are pretty useful too. Both sit on my desk now and are referred to almost daily. Recommended.

Terrific tool for beating writer's block.......2007-07-28
If you struggle with writer's block, or have trouble hitting just the right tone and voice when you write, pick up this handy thesaurus. Some people say the lists are obvious, simple or overly salesy. But then again, that's easy to say when you aren't the one facing a blank page.
Having spent years as a professional copywriter, I find this, and the companion book More Words that Sell, invaluable.
The beauty of these books is that they don't just include descriptive words, they give you whole phrases you can use to speak to a particular target audience. So think of this as a great place to start when you're drawing a blank and need to stimulate some fresh words, phrases or ideas.
I feel like I'm cheating--ethically and legally .......2007-06-14
If you've ever struggled to find a better way to say "big" or "beautiful" or "fun," and you've found yourself staring at the computer screen, those frustrating days are over.
This book is like a thesaurus on steroids, specifically for those of us who need to write things like sales copy, website copy, even office memos.
As a publicity expert, I find this particularly useful for press releases, as well as for sales copy at my website.
I love the chapters devoted to transition phrases, calls to action, the P.S., and phrases to help people order. You won't find this stuff in any thesaurus.
The front of the book includes a crash course in copywriting.
WORDS THAT SELL.......2006-03-09

GREAT marketing tool.......2006-02-25
I highly recommend this for anyone who is marketing a product or service, especially if you write sales copy or sales letters. It is very easy to use, indexed and categorized to make it simple to find the perfect words for your needs. This is NOT a text on how to write ads, and it IS an absolute must-have resource for anyone doing ads.
Good luck with it!
Respectfully,

Very Helpful (but a little dated).......2006-02-17
As a copywriter I needed something like this long before I knew it existed. No good copywriter would just regurgitate from the pages verbatim, but it provides inspiration and gets you out of copy traps.
Only one complaint - there are some pretty silly entries in here. I suppose that's why there's a sequel. I was looking in the Stylish section and found the word (i kid you not) Outasight! (with exclamation point).
But most of the language is pretty relevant. Buy this if you're a copywriter and think you've used the same tired words too many times.

Turn Sales Writing from a Task to Profits.......2006-11-23
Writing sales messages used to be a task to either put off or get over with quickly. No more. For me, the breakthrough idea was that most non-professional (and many professional) copywriters are such sheep--we use formats and approaches that we think are conventional and safe. McCraigh makes it clear that copy that sells is anything but a form letter. Somehow he gives you enough of a template to get going but also provides the insights to become profitably creative. What was once a chore is now an interesting art to be perfected. Thanks to the this book I am motivated and equipped.
Worthwile read........2006-04-23
At the start the author states that most of the books in this genre were written decades before the Internet. His approach is fresh and worthwhile. The first 75 pages are devoted to attention-grabbing headlines. McCraigh offers several simple tests to verify that you are on track. The second half of the book deals with specifics task such as sales letter, brochures, web sites, and email. The only criticism I have is that, like many books from small publishers, there are typos and grammatical errors. The information outshines the minor typographical errors.
Money Well Spent.......2006-03-23
I took a chance on this book and was glad that I did. The author not only explains things well, but gives good examples to prove his point. I was able to put together a good sales letter that has already landed a new customer. Good job on the book.
