Flawed and Poorly Laid Out.......2005-10-30
Brady usually does a passable job with their guides for RPGs, but this one is an extreme exception. I can understand and forgive the occasional typo, but this guide seems to be littered with them. It's incredibly annoying to look up boss strategy and see "+80%" damage for "dark" attacks, only to execute a big "dark" attack and see "-80%" on the screen. This transposing of positive and negative effects seems to happen on every 4th boss listing.
The guide itself is also poorly laid out, with the columns walk-through text broken with photos and and running roughshod around distracting side quest text bubbles. Whoever was in charge of page layout should probably try harder next time.
In addition, the charts, lists and directories in the rear of the guide, usually some of the most imporant parts are laid out awkwardly. Sometimes broken up in a illogical manner, sometimes page after page of items, with no breaks and not in alphabetical order. Try finding the entry for "Spicy Curry Magnus" when it's not ordered by healing magnus, nor in alphabetical order!
Overall the guide has helped me complete the odd confusing RPG side quest (which I swear are being designed more and more these days to require a 3rd party guide like this, the game publisher must get a cut). However, if I had known before buying how little it would really help and how much it would sometimes even hurt, I would have passed on it.
pretty good guide.......2005-01-29
so far, baten kaitos is my favorite nintendo game and the guide really helps, it gives you all the details, good boss fighting techniques, and a full list of magnus but there are some flaws in it. like for one, in one part they mess up on were a very powerful magnus is and i also can't find how you get the pendulum blast for gibari, i searched the entire book but no luck. all in alla good guide
Good but not spectacular.......2004-12-31
I always have confidence in Brady's guides. I don't even buy Prima guides anymore after the really bad experience with the Legend of Dragoon Guide and the full of spoiler Aidyn of Chronicle Guide. Brady Guides don't usually give out any spoiler and quite comprehensive (well they had a pretty bad spoiler for the Beyond Good and Evil guide, though I still find it very useful apart from that).
The Baten Kaitos guide was a little bit of disappointment though. I am not saying that there are heaps of flaws or whatsoever, it is just that things were not really that well organised.
The guide as all the basic things that you need: what you need to do and all the side quests that you can do. Nonetheless, the arrangement of materials could be greatly improved. The story walkthrough is good, but the side quests are quite disorganised in a way that you would risk losing out things that you need to complete your side quests. One of them being the Museum side quest in Mira. Should the guide mentioned when you first get it to keep it for a much later initiated side quest, I would have kept it instead of throwing it away for other side quests (some of them demand a lot of blank magnus spaces if you want to avoid back tracking). It would be good for Brady's to actually build a side quest section with all the references marked inside the main story walkthrough. Readers could then have a choice of whether they want to do the side quests or keep stuff for the side quests at all.
Also there is a boss battle that Kalas was forced into but the guide didn't mention it. It only said get yourself prepared. But if you prepared the wrong character, you are stuff. They manged to do it for the one where Gibari was forced into the battle, but wonder why the Kalas one was missed out.
The boss stragegies and enemy strategies are good, but just in the text. So just read the text instead of reading the elemental + and - because there are a lot of flaws. Weak to light could be -80 in one enemy but marked as +80 in another. So leaving you wondering what they are trying to do. A think a better consistency check is really needed in this guide.
Also the monster list doesn't tell you what usual or most frequent useful items are dropped by the monsters. With a game that involves collection of a lot of cards, I think this is an essential issue that needs to be addressed. Prices of items in the shops are steep so the best way to build up cards is by defeating monster. However, readers won't have a clue what to fight to get what. I need to make the notes myself. This is disappointing for that part was quite detail in the FF VIII guide by Brady's.
The most useful parts of the guide were the experience point vs level chart and the way the teach you to take photos to earn the most money (the only way to be rich in the game).
In all, if you just want a guide to get through the game quickly, this is a definite choice. If you are a person who wants to do everything, this might not be as promising as other Brady's guides.
Good,helpful guide.......2004-11-26
I always buy game guides for role playing since I am the type that likes to get everything in a game.Brady game guides are the most accurate. I have found them to be more so than the Nintendo Guides.Prima being the worst. One of the Nintendo guides I had purchased had so many errors in it that I called the company and had to make many notes in my copy. You will not be disappointed with this guide. It will help you to get everything and do things in the correct order. However the game itself can be played without a guide. I did that until I got my copy. If you speak to all the people in the game, more than once, you can find your way around.

Book Description
Film, video games, television ads, corporate presentations-whatever medium you're working in, a visual story is the most compelling way to provide your audience with information and, more important, with an emotional experience. Exploring Visual Storytelling analyzes the essential techniques of creating compelling visual stories. Based on the pioneering work of Minneapolis-based Visual Culture, this innovative book-DVD package examines and explains the fundamentals of the medium by covering the seven key concepts behind every visual story: context, character, conflict, plot, 2D space, 3D space, and time. Each topic is thoroughly explained in print and then applied in the companion DVD, fully demonstrating how these core concepts work together to create a cohesive, compelling story.
Book Description
Motion graphics surround us in the digital age. This book shows how to apply the design elements of color, typography, movement, and sound to a full range of digital media-from film and television to the Web, DVDs, and newly emerging technologies. Readers are inspired to experiment with motion graphics while expanding their vision to include such non-traditional media as the interactive menus of cell phones and digital billboards. Extensive coverage of the design process develops a sound understanding of the principles of motion graphics whatever the media in which they appear. A back-of-book DVD features supporting visuals and interviews that make the concepts behind motion graphics come alive.

For the first time in a while I was able to read a book without getting bored. It is written on a level that is easy to understand and incorporate in everyday life.
Superb read!.......2007-07-17
Great book and easy to follow. It definitely peaked my interest the whole time.
Excellent book.......2007-07-15
This book is very well written. It is understandable, but not insipid, and is actually quite useful.
Considering the price a worthy investment.......2007-07-15
When going through school you have books that you keep and you have books that you get rid off (I like everyone else try to sell them and get some money back). This is one of those books that I am keeping. Well written, easy to read.

Customer Reviews:
good overview look at digital video.......2004-10-01
The book does a great job of offering an overview of digital video, including things like using still photos, what type of equipment would you need, and how to set-up a shoot.
Only complaint is that the author occasionally states opinions as fact example: wide screen is better than standard, when in reality, it is an artistic choice, and it is how you use the space provided that makes something like widescreen better or worse.
A must-have!.......2004-09-22
Exploring Digital Video provides well-organized and reliable information. This book is quite appealing, with distinct photos and graphics, lucid text, and clear-cut chapters.
Notably, a beautiful full-color insert offers a look at Star Wars. And the DVD-ROM that comes free with the book contains surprising and useful free offers and specials and a feature on The Philadelphia Eagles! A must-have.
Perfect Source for Video Information!.......2004-09-09
This book covers so many areas of digital video that I'm sure it will have what you need. It talks about topics such as purchasing video cameras and includes technical specs and quality. It also discusses bluescreen technology, capturing video and audio, scriptwriting, storyboarding and so on. And this is all just the beginning. It goes on to discuss how to edit, render and output film for the internet, television, or for multimedia presentations.
Other than just being a great source of information this book also has a lot of fun extras that will keep you interested. At the end of each chapter there is a quick question formatted review to make sure that you understood and remembered the important aspects of the chapter. There are also various inserts with profiles and interviews of some of the professionals in the field. Although all of the inserts are interesting and informative, the best was the piece about Star Wars. This particular insert is about Industrial Light and Magic (ILM) which is part of Lucas Film LTD. It discusses how one of the scenes from Star Wars was created. It's really cool to hear how they created something and made it look so amazing on film.
As if this weren't enough already, this book comes with a DVD/DVD-ROM with interviews with the Eagles Television Network and a number of tutorials. For those unfamiliar with the ETN, it is the Emmy award winning network of the Philadelphia Eagles. You get to hear about digital video from experts in the field through watching the DVD and reading the book. For such a low price it is one of the best literary investments you can make if you want to learn about digital video.
This book is a KEEPER........2004-08-27
Finally! A book that makes a difficult subject easy to understand - creating and working with digital video (DV)! Each chapter is well laid out with great illustrations and nicely sized titles for each section and lesson. It also enhances its content by making good use of sidebars, to add relevant information.. Each chapter ends with an very useful set of questions and exercises, which furthers the reader's comprehension.
Lesson 6 was a highlight for me because I often incorporate photographs into my videos. This sometimes results in a badly distorted photo, forcing me to omit some great photos because of that distortion. Other times, I've been lucky and able to successfully place a photo without any distortion. Until I read this book, the causes were unclear; the author demonstrates the correct way to prepare a photograph for digital video in a way that I could understand and will remember. Though math and computations are a turn-off to many, she successfully covers the meaning of pixel values without confusion. The DVD included with the book contains tutorials which do an excellent job of taking the viewer step-by-step through cropping a photograph vertically and horizontally, so it is properly proportioned for video. The reader therefore has a visual and a written source for future reference at any time.
As a bonus, the author interviews Fred Meyers and Ben Snow, the makers of the Star Wars movies from George Lucas' Industrial Light & Magic (ILM). Meyers and Snow re pioneers in the DV field. She interviews several other DV professionals as well, adding their vast experience to the subject.
The DVD also includes discounts from major retailers, saving readers money on computer and electronics products.
This book is a keeper-excellent for the both the beginner and the experienced hobbyist.
Great book - even better DVD companion.......2004-08-26
The book is great. All you have to do is open it up and glance through it to see that it will be helpful.
The Companion DVD is even better with step by step tutorials. The DVD also offers discounts with retailers on equipment, stock video and a great DVD duplication offer from Action Duplication in West Conshohocken, PA (800-847-3827).

Detailed Intelligence.......2005-09-13
This book takes the view-point of somebody who knows how to get into this business, and the language used really inspired me to feel that this what I was looking for.
Great book for the job seeker.......1998-12-13
So far, Paul Allman's book has far surpassed anything I've read about how to get into the video industry. His book is full of anecdotal evidence of job hunting techiniques used by himself (he has worked in all aspects of the industry) and others.
He discusses the kind of personality and temperment that is appropriate for each speciality in video. Perhaps the biggest strength of the book are the suggestions of where to look for entry level employment for the novice. The book has a great appendix that contains information of trade magazines, books, schools etc.
