Book Description
The first “air force” was founded by Napoleon Bonaparte. The American Civil, Franco-Prussian, and First World Wars saw extensive use of balloons, but it was during the Second World War that the balloon saw more new and imaginative uses. Barrage balloons helped prevent incursions by enemy aircraft and new, ingenious uses were found for balloons, including dropping bombs (as used by the Japanese against the USA), destroying enemy aircraft, espionage, and other clandestine operations. For the first time, all of the uses of balloons at war are contained in a single volume.

Customer Reviews:
Science of positive reinforcement.......2007-08-01
Aubrey Daniels offers an insightful look at the behavioral school of management, and its key tools: positive, and negative reinforcement. The book covers how to link rewards to behaviors you want to reinforce, when to deliver them, and how to design systems to support them. While not without its flaws, the book is well written and offers plenty of practical advice - if you're an aspiring manager, or a seasoned veteran, 'Bringing Out the Best in People' is a solid investment of your time.
Clarity, results, contribution.......2007-07-04
This is an essential text for anyone who manages people. Daniels is clearly 'for' creating a workplace that taps the innate desire to contribute and against one run by fear. I've seen nearly 35 years of organizational life, as employee, manager and consultant. That's a lot of fads, slogans and philosophies. This book is the real deal.
When people are managed using these clear, rigorous, objective principles, stress and interpersonal barriers decrease, work exceeds expectations. I also recommend Dr. Marshall Rosenberg's "Nonviolent Communication".
Based on a flawed worldview.......2007-04-02
I started reading the book as a part of my personal development with the company that I work for. The book is founded in behaviorism, and does not stray from the concepts associated with this worldview. My issue with it is that I believe that people are more than a reaction to the things that happen to us. We have unique personalities, and they consist of more than the conditioning that they are subjected to. This psychology takes away the idea of free-will and choice, and eliminates personal responsibility. When it comes to managing people, I believe that these are important elements to tap into. This behaviorist approach to management may look good on the surface, and make logical sense, but is flawed by its nature, and cannot have any long lasting impact.
Good book but not as good as her other book.......2006-03-02
This book is a fine book if you are looking for the typical book written for lazy minds. The material is good, the presentation is great. However, there is a lack of references and detail that someone really interested in the material will desire. If you like pop-culture books get this one. If you want a terrific book that appeals to your brain then get the authors other book, "Performance Management." It is exceptional.
Must Have Book for all Managers, Parents & Pet Owners.......2006-01-14
I have used Bringing Out the Best in People throughout Latin America and here in the States for several years. When I have control of a client project, this book is required reading. I get groans at first from supervisors and managers, but it is amazing what happens after they read it. They come back and immediately start talking about NICs, PICs, etc. It is fun but keeps me on my toes from that point forward as they watch my every move!
Although Daniels talks of motivating and brining out top performance from individuals within organizations, the concepts definitely applies and should be used in personal/family relationships as well. The concepts even hold true as I train my dog and two macaws as uncertain/certain, future consequences do not work for them! The beauty is that this book makes you stop and think.

There are actually a small number of principles used by good motivators, and the best leaders were using them long before psychology had a name. Fascinating case studies and anecdotes about Lee Iacocca, Sandra Day O'Connor, and many others show how you can put 12 key principles to work in your family or organization. Whether you are a parent, executive, teacher, or friend, you can gain the satisfaction that comes from Bringing the Best Out in People.

Best book on motivation.......2007-04-18
I have read and re-read this book at least three times in the past 10 years, actively applying the steps to my own experiences. It is very insightful into human nature and its many illustrations from real life, including well-known people, along with its appeal to strong values, support its authenticity as a practical guide to helping those around you and, in the process, helping yourself.
Bringing Out the Best in People: How to Enjoy Helping Others Excel.......2006-08-23
Probably one of the best books I've read on reading personality types and reaching out to a larger number (group) of people. This book is a must read for everyone who finds they must work with or for other people.
Alan McGinnis is a great writer!.......2006-05-18
Alan McGinnis was one of the first authors I read when I was interested on broader spectrum of psychology. I began reading his books when I was a kid, not even a teenager. I always enjoyed them. This book is no exception. An offshoot of The Friendship Factor he expounds on his many ideas and ways to access communication to better your ability to be understood. Excellent as usual!
Very Insightful.......2006-01-30
This book is great for people who want to interact with people. It is for people who would like to convey things but end up somehow sending the wrong message. People who were taught myths on how to interact with people will find this book handy. I am glad that this book relates many of its findings to the teachings of the Christ and backs it up for skeptics using the latest research.
How to succeed without lettings ethics get in your way.......2005-04-16
I fault this book for many reasons. First, the title is misleading. This is not a book about helping other people. It is basically a motivational book about how to succeed when working with others. The approach is to use numerous motivational anecdotes weaved into the author's 12-point approach. The author, has a blatant disregard of ethics. He doesn't ignore ethics, on the contrary, he often argues against them, frequently railing against idealists for their impractical approach. For example, "the idealists might suppose that the only way to inspire people is to appear to their benevolent instincts, but the best motivators usually appeal to anger as well." Another example: "For all our talk about love, I have never seen a congregation genuinely fired up which did not have the conviction that they fighting a common enemy." But whatever works is what we should do, and damn the "idealists." When McGinnis advocates truly helping others, it is always because it works to your own advantage from a practical standpoint. Appeals to pride are also common in this book, he even relates a story from his own past: " . . . I remember 35 years later my deep pride as he chewed out certain members of the team for poor performances . . . the coached praised me before the team." The exultation of pride is reprehensible, especially since McGinnis is purportedly a Christian. Since antiquity, Pride has been one of the seven deadly sins of Chrisitanity; the great popular Christian author C.S. Lewis rails eloquently against it, devoting a chapter to it in "Mere Christianity," calling it the cardinal sin. For McGinnis, all this ancient wisdom is simply "idealism" or he simply ignores it. My final complaint is that some of the information is simply inaccurate. For example, he states that "Most studies show that parents who run a tight ship and who are fairly strict produce the most secure children". This is dead wrong. The vast majority of modern psychology and research is dead against this approach; i.e. see T. Berry Brazelton, or virtually any other of book written by a mainstream M.D. or psychologist. As with all McGinnis's statements, he provides no research to back it up.
The appeal to non-benovolent (e.g. malevolent) instincts, the denigration of the Christian ideal of love, and the exaltation of the cardinal sin of pride display a pattern of disregard for ethics and the worship of the practical.

Customer Reviews:
Very short & general.......2007-10-02
This is like a small handbook/manual to refer to after you've read a more in depth book on the subject. I wouldn't even call it a book, it's not very long at all.
It's not a bad read but if you have never read anything about "difficult people" before you'll find a LOT lacking. I think maybe it'll be good to refer to if you need reminders of the things you've learned.
A more comprehensive book on the subject which i have read and like a lot is called Coping with difficult people by Robert M. Bramson.
Should be called Dealing with Difficult Behaviours.......2007-09-12
I really enjoyed this book. The crux of it is that you are dealing with bad or difficult behaviour, not necessarily bad people. If you understand what drives the behaviour you can be more successful in dealing with it. It is also a good guide on what NOT to do. AND the book is not a weighty tome that drones on and on to prove a simple point ... it is nice and to the point. I was a IT consultant for 10 years working with many different global coporate companiess, and now run my own business employing 15 people. I can recognise each and every behaviour type. I have tries lots of these strategies for dealing with these behaviours (successful and unsuccessful) and a lot of this advice rings so very true.
the difficlties of self-knowledge.......2007-05-15
I found this book is quite helpful in identifying differing communication styles and in giving suggestions for how to deal with them. One of the major, salutary, insights is that each of us probably has a communication styles that irritate somebody, somewhere. Ouch! But recognizing that aspect of "the problem with OTHER people" gives us a better chance to improve matters. I liked the humor, too.
Don't be put off by the extreme sounding title.......2007-04-13
This is one of the best books about effective communication I have come across.
As a manager of a large teaching staff, and working for local government, I have found this book to be one of the best resources I own.
The book clearly breaks down difficult personality characteristics, identifies the motivation behind the behaviours, and gives clear strategies to deal with the situation. From the bulldozing boss, to the meek mouse, this book helps to bring out the best from the people you work with.
It's also effective with difficult friends and family. It is also very readable.
Dealing With People You Can't Stand........2007-03-15
Excellent Book. It gives practical tips in how to deal with difficult people. I am requiring my staff to read the book.

Stands alone as a managment book.......2003-05-29
I'm amazed that this book hasn't been discovered by more people.
It is clear that the author's view on valuing employees passes the real-world test because, unlike the many management consultants and academicians who have written primarily theoretical works, Melohn actually delivered outstanding business performance through the implementation of his approach.
If you're only going to read one book on this topic, you've just found it.
A refreashing outlook on empowering people.......1999-09-30
The author has a rare view of himself in corporate America. He sees himself as a servant to the people and works on drawing out the best in them. I loved the book because it is proof the managing and directing a force of people through values works! Perhaps the best aspect of the book is that he gives practical steps to incorporate these steps in a organization. However he makes it clear that unless the leaders of a organization embrace these values the efforts of others really wont' matter. He calls leaders to the carpet. You can't expect things (values, work ethic etc) from others until you do it yourself and model it consistently. Personally I have never worked for someone like Tom, however I would love the chance to.
