Book Description
An apparent student suicide has brought medical examiner Sara Linton to the local college campus, along with her ex-husband, police chief Jeffrey Tolliver. But a horribly mutilated corpse yields up few answers. And a suspicious rash of subsequent "suicides" suggests that a different kind of terror is stalking the youth of Heartsdale, Georgia -- a nightmare that is coming to prey on Sara Linton's loved ones.
A small town is being transformed into a killing ground. And the key to a sadistic murderer's motive and identity may be held in the unsteady hands of a campus security guard -- a former police detective driven from the force by the hellish memories that will never leave her. Lena Adams survived the unthinkable and has paid a devastating price. Now the survival of future victims may depend upon her ... when she can barely protect herself.
Customer Reviews:
Mistakes Overshadow Even Mayhem and Unsympathetic Characters.......2007-08-21
Since others have addressed the continuous decline of Lena and unsympathetic characters, I'll focus on one major unexplicable mistake and another that even a casual viewer of CSI would catch. Why didn't some--copy editor, line editor?--catch the author's colossal mistake of identifying a shotgun as a rifle. This mistaken identity was repeated over and over. Didn't anyone involved in this book know the difference between a rifle and a shotgun?
Secondly, just about anyone who watches Law and Order, CSI or other crime shows would know that the depth of a knife wound is measured, the tip of a broken tip lodged in the body would be matched to the type of knife and the four-inch blade of a pocket knife couldn't reach from the surface of a burly chest to a shoulder blade.
Mistakes like this lower respect for the author and publisher.
Lena lost me for a while, but brought me back.......2007-07-31
I admit, I do not like Lena very much in the Grant County series. She is BITTER, and that deserves to be in all capital letters. I wish she would take control of things rather than let them happen to her, no matter how rough and tumble she thinks she is. But, this book, the third in the Grant County series, left me stunned, even though it was mostly about Lena.
The third Grant County book takes us back to Sara and Jeffrey. They are more or less back together, but Sara is cautious (rightly so) because of Jeffrey's infidelity. When called upon to investigate an apparent suicide of a university student, Sara brings her very pregnant sister along for the ride. While at the scene, her sister is brutally attacked and hospitalized. What kind of monster would beat and nearly murder a pregnant woman? Soon we will find out as Jeffrey and Sara are pulled into the investigation.
Their efforts, however, are just the backdrop of this story, as Lena is the main focus. Lena has since resigned from the police force and now has a job as a university security guard. She knows things she is not telling Jeffrey about this student's death. Among them, it just so happens that her therapist is the student's mother. She is living, granted, in an odd situation, taking temporary residence on campus with her dead sister's gay lover, Nan, and the two of them becoming friendly if not out of genuine friendship than at least a sense of loneliness that Lena's sister has left them. And, oddly enough, she has a boyfriend who she met in a yoga class who has a shaddy past and a violent nature (he wears those long sleeves all the time because of the Nazi / skinhead tattoos). This will only spell trouble, yet, it fits with Lena's sense of self destruction and feelings of helplessness. And on top of that, there's a killer in their midst once again.
While Lena lost me for a little while in terms of her bitter nature, sadly, as I an a lot of readers can relate, we have all been where she is at some point. A man who is a loser, stupid, insecure, cowardly, angry at the world, etc. somehow hitches their wagon to a woman (or vice versa), and chips away at the woman's self esteem because it makes them feel powerful. We've all been there, I don't care who you are or the extent of your experiences. I am now at the point in life where I am not afraid anymore. I see a man for his lies and whatever games he intends to play, and I tell him where to go and I don't let him make me feel guilty. Instead, I allow myself to feel superior like one of those men do. Stand me up? Blow off an appointment? Well that's not right. I will hope that Lena will overcome this abusive relationship, and I hope she will rise above.
A Faint Cold Fear.......2007-06-12
I got about three fourths through the book and couldn't take anymore. I doubt seriously if I'll ever finish it. I just got fed up with the characters, particularly Lena and Jeff.
GREAT WRITING.......2007-05-08
LOVE HER BOOKS ORDERED ALL OF THEM, FEEL LIKE I KNOW SARA AND JEFFERY.
Must Read.......2007-03-01
I loved this book. It is definitly worth your time to take a full day and read it all at once. Karin Slaughter is one of the best authors I've read in a long time. I would put her up against Patricia Cornwell's Kay Scarpetta series, and she would probably win. This book is wonderfuly horrific. You can almost see the crime scenes like you are there. I couldn't put it down.

Customer Reviews:
Good Suspense Story.......2007-02-12
I gave it 4 stars cause it's a book you don't want to put down until the last page to find out if Paige survives her ordeal. The author knows how to use the "HOOK" (grab readers attention/interest). I took away 1 star cause the ending "stretched" a reader's sense from reality to fantasyland (too much unbelievable stuff); also, too many characters in the novel, many not adding any meat and potato's to the plot, and making for boring chapters. I just skimmed over them. Take out the unwanted page adders for a reader, and you get a good 300 page paperback, not 465!
Noticed that too many established best selling authors are doing this page adder noncents. Maybe they need more moola from their publisher to buy another BMW, but may find they will end up losing readers in the long run. I especially dislike when an author has a character walk into a room for example, then spend 2 or more pages describing everything about it (color of carpet/furniture, etc.). If I want Interior Decorating 101, I can buy it at the student bookstore.
Cold start.......2002-01-02
Cold Fear is 465 pages long & finally, after 200 pages it takes off. When it got good, it got really good!
From the author of "If Angels Fall," another suspense hit..........2001-12-19
I had the pleasure of meeting Rick Mofina when he autographed a copy of "If Angels Fall" for me, a book I found both gripping and suspenseful. When I heard of another Mofina book on its way, I waited with impatience, and snapped it up as soon as I could.
The setup is tense: a husband, wife, and daughter go on a camping trip where the wife, suffering from some "monster" in her past, needs to face her fear and challenge it in the place where it began. With such emotional baggage hurting and hampering their marriage, the husband and wife fight, and when the daughter comes across her father alone, angrily chopping wood, and tries to speak to him, angry words and a misplaced swipe of the axe send the daughter racing off into the woods - and she is lost.
While starting as a "Will the child survive?" story, "Cold Fear" quickly moves into full thriller status when the "monster" in the wife's past reclaims centre stage, and the police place blame in the wrong direction.
The return of characters from "If Angels Fall" is also a big thumbs-up, and leaves one quite satisfied with the continuity. The book is a nail-biter in places, keeping you guessing and worried for the characters, and as the pace continues to speed up, you'll find yourself making excuses to go find a quiet spot to read.
Give this one a read, you won't regret it!

Gripping Thriller.......2001-10-28
Cold Fear is a book which will grab your interest from the first
sentence and will not let you go until you have solved the mystery along with the author. Considering this is only his second book to be published in the mystery line, it is absolutely wonderful and most gripping. You will not want to put the book
down once you have started reading it. The plot is relatively
easy to follow despite the suspense it creates as the writer weaves the plots.
Don't miss this one
GOOD, BUT NOT WORTH THE COST!.......2001-08-16
I enjoyed this novel of survival and suspense from Rick Mofina, but I don't believe it was worth the seven fifty. In some parts of the novel, it just dragged on and moved slowly. I thought it was odd that the police just assumed Doug and Emily were guilty for the disappearance of their daughter because Doug cut his hand on the ax. I also felt that the jail break and the chase after, Doug and Emily's daughter, Paige, was kind of thrown in there just for the end. In some ways, this novel left the author wondering a lot about why the family even bothered to go on this ridiculous camping trip. If you want to read a novel about surviving in the wilderness and surviving mental breakdowns then read this novel. If you are a hard-core suspense fan, then SAVE YOUR TIME & YOUR MONEY!

Book Description
In Cold Fear: The Catcher in the Rye Censorship Controversies and Postwar American Character Pamela Hunt Steinle
In Cold Fear examines the censorship controversies over J. D. Salinger's The Catcher in the Rye as a cultural debate occurring across America, 1954-present. Catcher presents a narrative in which adolescent embrace of American ideals of individualism and egalitarianism lead to criticism and rejection of dominant postwar social practicesa narrative as threatening to some adults as it is heartening to others. Attempts to remove Catcher from high schools as an "un-American" text have generated continuous and extensive controversy, distinguishing it as one of the most frequently taught postwar novelsand the most frequently censored.
Treating Catcher as a cultural Rorschach test, In Cold Fear tracks debate discourse in open-ended interviews, public media, editorial letters, and in school board and community meetings in Alabama, California, New Mexico, and Virginia. Debate participants express common agreement with Salinger's critique of postwar American life but divide over whether adolescents should be either exposed to or protected from this perspective. The peculiar angst of the debate is explained by participants' articulation of a wizening of the American spirit: a declining vision of American exceptionalism, recognition of social powerlessness, and fearfulness of an uncertain American future rooted in the threat of nuclear annihilation.
In Cold Fear provides historical post-holes for understanding how differing audiences interpreted Catcher and offers a suggestive context for understanding the contemporary anxieties of America's "troubled teens."
Customer Reviews:
Excellent police novel.......2000-02-11
This book is in keeping with Daley's usual standards of quality, with well-drawn, realisitic characters and relationships, an intricate and twisting plot, and plenty of gritty action. Indeed, Daley's works make most others of this genre seem almost amateurish by comparison.
Download Description
"E-book extra: ""Criminal Minds: Laura Lippman Interviews Karin Slaughter"" The third pulse-pounding novel in the Grant County series from the New York Times-bestselling author of Blindsighted and Kisscut. Sara Linton, medical examiner in the small town of Heartsdale, GA, is called out to an apparent suicide on the local college campus. The mutilated body provides little in the way of clues -- and the college authorities are eager to avoid a scandal -- but for Sara and police chief Jeffrey Tolliver, things don't add up. Two more suspicious suicides follow, and a young woman is brutally attacked. For Sara, the violence strikes far too close to home. And as Jeffrey pursues the sadistic killer, he discovers that ex-police detective Lena Adams, now a security guard on campus, may be in possession of crucial information. But, bruised and angered by her expulsion from the force, Lena seems to be barely capable of protecting herself, let alone saving the next victim.
Customer Reviews:
Not A Comfortable Read.......2004-09-25
There is a cluster of suicides at a college in a small town in Georgia. Dr. Sara Linton is a pediatrician and part time medical examiner for the county and her ex-husband is the police chief. They begin the investigation, then Sara's sister is viciously attacked and the suicides are starting to look suspicious. They may be homicides. Some of the characters that people this book are pretty strange. I didn't realize this was a continuation in a series until I was well into the story. Maybe I would have had more sympathy for the reoccurring characters if I had read the previous books. I had a problem believing in Sara Linton as a doctor. I may be unfairly comparing her character to that of Gwen Hunter's Dr. Rhea Lynch who seems to me a very competent doctor. There are several very graphic descriptions of the crime scenes and some fairly explicit sex scenes, that might not be for everyone. This was not a comfortable read. But, like a particularly bad car accident, it was hard to look away.
Customer Reviews:
Poorly Written and No Help .......2006-10-04
In addition to the fact that this book is written from the perspective of a radio account executive it is poorly written and doesn't address the real problem that the title promises to address. If you have call reluctance or one of it's subsets such as telephobia (fear of prospecting with the phone)than you and your career need some serious help. Call reluctance behaviors such as telephobia are very real and the cost to salespeople are enormous. This author regergitates the same old useless information that anyone who has been in sales for more than 20 minutes has probably already heard. Here is an example of one of the exercizes in this book - "Cross your arms. Now switch arm position so your arms now go the opposite way. Feels odd, doesn't it?" He goes on to say that this will feel odd but if you do it long enough it will begin to feel natural and relates it to his program. In fairness he mentions that you may have heard this in a seminar before. Really? This is one of the oldest and most tired mini exercizes in the seminar business. The rest of the book isn't much better.
If you really have a fear of cold calling and want to find out the real reason as well as some specific things that you can do about it read The Psychology of Sales Call Reluctance.
WASTE OF MANEY!!.......2006-08-23
If your not selling media advertising save your money! This book contains less than 20% of information on actual cold calling. WASTE OF MONEY! All the positive feedback on this book must have been written by the authors friends, or by others who have never read a decent book on cold calling!
About Conquering Cold-calling Fear.......2006-06-24
I am relatively new to the sales game, having spent most of my career in the nonprofit and public sectors. My new job requires lots of cold calling, often to larger corporations. I found Don's book (and his similarly titled class taught through the Learning Annex)to be very helpful. I came away with some great tips and several guiding principles. For example, his emphasis on organization and tips for managing leads got me to set up and actually use a contact database. His 20 call a day rule has helped break down my cold calling fear. His advice on dealing with gatekeepers was invaluable. One receptionist not only helped me land the account at her company, but referred me to her former company that had laid her off! I followed up and ended up landing the account! To be honest, I would have preferred less information specific to radio advertising sales, which shows up mostly towards the end of the book. But there is plenty of good information that can be universally applied.
Conquering Cold-Calling Fear: Before and After the Sale.......2006-03-18
This book has some valid sales tips, but the only place that conquering cold-calling fear is mentioned is in the title. The author indicates that more sales proficiency conquers cold-calling fears. I do not agree. I read the book and had no change in my call-reluctance. I am very very disappointed.
Inspiring book.......2006-01-14
I found this book inspiring and informational. I have a job that entails a lot of cold calling and my income is based on how much I sell. Following the tips in this book has enabled me to
confidently make cold calls and my income has gone through the roof!!! I highly recommend this book to anyone that is in Sales
and wants to make more money.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent Audio's.......2007-05-15
If you wanna learn, no better way to start......late delievery by the sender.
Delightful and Impressive Book.......2007-01-19
I absolutely loved this book. It is humorous and informative. The author took time to explain things in layman's terms without "dumping it down". I was delighted and impressed by the numerous practical examples the author gave which illustrated the vast opportunities that are available to achieve effective negotiations.
The book really gives a great launching point for those who wish to carry out successful win-win negotiations in every facet of their lives, be it at home, with suppliers, at your favourite shop or at work. I love the tone that the book is written in and how it is easy to read, understand and follow, making a lot of sense.
I now know how information, time pressures and perceived power can be effectively employed in successful negotiations. I also now know that if I want to persuade people, I need to show the immediate relevance and value of what I am presenting in terms of meeting their needs and desires. The lesson that collaborative negotiations lies in finding what the other side really wants and showing them the way to get it, while I get what I want was particularly salutary.
I recommend the book to anyone interested in successful and fruitful negotiations.
A "How To" for all personalities.......2006-12-16
One thing you cannot teach, and that is someone Else's skill. I've seen better talkers, better doers and so on. This clever tome is for the basics of how to put a deal together. Not just "to win" but that everyone gets what they want. They get a customer, you get a lower price or earlier delivery and installment, etc. The text instills a discipline in that, you have to decide, up front, what the walk-away point is instead of being caught up in the moment. I once said nothing and got $4,000 off a deal by keeping my mouth shut. You cannot be him nor I you. But we can all walk away from a bad deal.
its advice from an argumentative old man.......2006-11-28
The art of writing and negotiation has come a long way since the ole Herb wrote this book. His stories present him as an argumentative, cheap, old-fashioned man with a distant relationship with his wife.
His first kibble of advice is to annoy a salesperson at a one-price store (read as "department store") until they eventually agree to knock a few bucks off the price. I guess this supposed millionaires time is not that expensive.
Whatever happened to simplicity?.......2006-08-25
Here are some words from the Big Printer in the Sky:
"The ability to simplify means to eliminate the unnecessary so that the necessary may speak." -Hans Hoffman
By the time I got to the dynamite the gun powder was wet and soggy.
