While some of the material really made me think, some made me angry. Our politicians and voters are so illogical and impractical, as well as leaning toward communism and socialism that it worries the bejeasues out of me. Do they not realize we are imploding? The main character really had some good points that we could use in today's world. I could really see and enjoyed some of the parody with modern news and media figures.
Fun way to blend fiction with history.

Like most pipe smokers, I have a passion for pipe history, trivia, and tobacciana. Our hobby can become consuming, and this aspect of pipe smoking is evident in Jeffers' "The Perfect Pipe." Trivia and anecdotes abound. Unfortunately, so do recycled facts about pipe making and the inevitable list of famous pipe smokers.

All in all, this is a solid introduction to the hobby. But do we really need yet another chapter on how briar pipes are made? Or another witty quote on smoking from Mark Twain? I don't think so. I would have liked more information about various tobaccos (a history of, say, My Mixture 965 or Prince Albert would have been welcome), or perhaps about the tobaccos of choice of these famous smokers. Alas, I get another chapter on how to pack a pipe.

For beginning smokers, this book is a fine introduction. For more seasoned and experienced devotees, Richard Carleton Hacker's books on the subject offer more stimulating reading.

A Paean to the Pipe.......2004-04-13

THE PERFECT PIPE is the perfect pipe book to read while smoking a pipe. Formatted as a kind of mini-coffee table book, this is H. Paul Jeffers contribution to the lore of "The Gentle Art."

Jeffers loves pipe lore and shares tales and poems and songs, and all manner of design and marketing information. There are a few historical and informational errors here and there, and the book skimps on pipe smoking techniques, but it is amusingly written and entertaining in a light way.

Jeffers does not have the "Encyclopaedia Britannica" approach of Richard Carleton Hacker (whom he quotes frequently). Jeffers' pipesmoking habit is an exercise in pleasure and fun, not the grimly serious side of the equation (though what could be "grimly serious" about the pleasures of the pipe defeats me. However, others will out).

See you 'round the fire!

A very well written and thoroughly informative book, but...........2002-01-31

This is highly reccomended. It is humorously written and informative. There is much to be learned by the novice pipe smoker and I'll wager that even a few veteran pipesters will find more than a few interesting facts here. The hand drawn illustrations are elegant and beautiful. Only a few pages of high gloss color photography, though. While this is a great book and should be required reading for all pipe smokers, I dare say that I was disappointed with the way that Mr. Jeffers just breezed right through the sections dealing with the mechanics of how to smoke a pipe. I, for one, need a book that lingers on this area of pipe smoking. From proper break ins to proper packing and lighting, I need more knowledge! Otherwise, a great read, though. Perhaps I'll write the book to answer all of my questions.....

Enjoyable read, wish it had MORE info!.......2002-01-16

I was excited to receive this fine book as a gift from my loving wife. It was a pleasure to read! I do agree with the first reviewer that there are several errors in the information presented. Ascorti pipes are no longer made by Pepino Ascorti exclusively for TinderBox. a) Pepino died in the 1980's. b) His Son, Roberto, now makes the same pipes under the Ascorti name and also under the Caminetto name and are sold at most pipe stores.

The absents of Ser Jacopo in the text is disapointing. Also I would have liked to learn much more about Tobacco itself. How it is cured and processed. More detail on the differencces in Cavindish style procesing as there is many different styles such as "American" , Danish, german etc; all different. Reviews of popular tobaccos would also be informative.

I liked the book and will read it many times in those moments by a fire with a little wine and a pipfull of a favorite tobacco. It is a good addition to pipe books though not a "Complete" book in my view.

A Good Read and a Good Look.......2000-03-28

I was just getting started with smoking pipes, and I wanted a guide as to what to buy and what to do, and this was really helpful. It's written in an unpretentious style, and the illustrations are clever. It's a very attractive book and I expect that I'll enjoy it for a long time (if I don't die of throat cancer - just kidding!).

Engineers, Contractors and Municipal Inspectors alike can gain a great deal of knowledge on the construction of buried pipelines from this "master piece" put together by Amster Howard. This book is a culmination of many decades of experience that Howard has with the US Bureau of Reclamation (USBR). He is credited with developing the USBR's table of "E prime" values that is used in many ASTM, ASCE, and AWWA standards and manuals for estimating the deflection of buried flexible pipe. A great text for "rules of thumb" of installing all types of pipe materials underground.

Practical & Thorough Coverage of all Aspects of Pipelne Inst.......1999-12-07

This book covers the fundamentals of pipe-soil interaction as related to the construction of a buried pipeline. The emphasis is on how the soil and pipe properties must both be jointly incorporated into the design process and how the subsequent installation procedures must be consistent with design assumptions. All types of pipe are discussed. From unloading the pipe at the construction site to final testing for acceptance, each step in the installation sequence is reviewed in detail. Proper selection of soil type and compaction level for the soil support system for both rigid and flexible pipe is discussed, along with the appropriate soil testing requirements and standards. Each phase of the installation process has a section on "Construction Considerations" describing techniques of physically burying the pipe, and an "Inspection Checklist" for the on-site inspector to use as a guide for proper installation procedures.

More "sound advice" from the autor of "Sever Habits of Highly Effective People". Quite a few (at least semi) practical advices in this book - building on the priveate and public victories. I think Covey once more prooved his ability to put this into a leadership perspective. Althoug it may not be absolutely necessary to read The Sever Habits in advance, it undoubtedly would be an advantage .

This follow up book to the SEVEN HABITS OF HIGHLY EFFECTIVE PEOPLE (Covey), repeats a lot of the same ideas in this title. However, it applies the ideas in a slightly different way and is a useful read who want to enforce the difficult to develop seven habits and apply them on an organizational level.

I particularly liked the way Dr. Covey handled the discussion about the two "must have" qualities of any leader -- character and competence. The former of these two is often forgotten in today's rough and tumble business world.

While there is redundant information in this volume, I found it to have enough new information to be a worthwhile read. I also found that the way the repeated information was presented made it interesting to review. I don't think you can go wrong buying this book, it contains many worthwhile ideas and case histories to ponder that will spark your own creative thinking.

Thinking in new directions.......2006-04-23

Some of the other reviews say that the concept of principle centered leadership is old or rehashed, or that people who don't know this shouldn't be in business.

Yet it's still incredibly hard to find corporations that operate on leading by principle. The vast majority of companies still hire people to do a specific job and if the workers become more efficient, they're marginally rewarded. "Do this over and over again, and we'll give you some money."

The concept of utilizing the actual mind's of employees is brilliant. Creativity is an infinite untapped resource. Consider the fact that we only use 10% of our brains. Imagine what would happen if we started tapping into that remaining 90%. Imagine what would happen to a company if it tapped into the massive creative conscious of its many employees.

People can't be treated like machines that need to be more efficient. People are not machines, they are people.

Stimulate their minds and get them to contribute to the direction of the company and (surprise,surprise) they will feel like they matter. This will bring forward motivation, enthusiasm and responsibility AS WELL AS fresh ideas, innovative solutions and ultimately, rampant growth.

All the company needs is a worthy principle to guide the people. Here's a good example: "Serve the customer like they've never been served before." The company that succeeds understands that there's always a better way to do something, and after achieveing the better way, there's an even better way.

In order to find these better ways, the successful company realizes that their workers can contribute very useful ideas by being actively involved in the direction of the company.

Principle centered leadership is not an old concept. It is a necessary concept that unfortunately only a minority of businesses use.

This book is required reading for any business or leader.

Meaningful All The Way..........2006-03-15

Stephen Covey is on way to conduct a seminar in India on the 8th Habit and this reminds me of my previous read of Stephen Covey 'Principle Centered Leadership' - Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day...the very quote says a lot. Stephen Covey opens up your mind to the permanent things - values, family, relationship, communication. He gives an insight to create a long-term meaningful relationship and be success at workplace and home. He defines how to increase quality and productivity by impressive charts as :

*Alternate Life Centers & Organizational Centers
*Four Levels of Principle centered leadership with key principles
*Seven habits maturity Continuum
*Power Process
*Pyramid of Influence
*Four Paradigms
*Six Conditions of Empowerment

In Chapter Seven, the Author focus on Seven deadly sins referring to Mahatma Gandhi's quote:All to do with social and political conditions:

*Wealth without work
*Pleasure without conscience
*Knowledge without character
*Commerce without morality (Business without ethics)
*Science without humanity
*Religion without sacrifice
*Politics without Principle

He charts out how the seven habits will help you avoid seven deadly sins. Stephen Covey's Thirty Methods of Influence in Chapter 11 centers around positive influence with people in our personal and professional lives. He explains how we can powerfully and ethically influence to win new business, keep customers, maintain friendships, change behaviors or improve marriage and family relationships.

Chapter 13 - Making champions of your childen is one chapter that weigh stress to build their self esteem with added scoops of guidance.

Divided into section 1 and 2, the book has 31 chapters - each one a unique approach with powerful reading with his principles of vision, leadership and human relationships. Section 1 deals with Personal and Interpersonal Effectiveness whereas Section 2 focus on Managerial and Organizational Development. This becomes a practical teaching tool for business leaders. Covey's Principles make a great sense and I recommend this book for all exisiting and future leaders who would like to scale high with the perfect blend of Stephen Covey's wisdom, compassion and practical experience.
