Book Description
Art Cars represent a vital and ever-growing folk art form. Forty-two of these magnificent sculptures-on-wheels are featured in 127 photographs, complete with an essay about each artist. Ever wonder what could possess a driver to transform his or her car into an alligator, cover it with faucets, meticulously apply stained glass to every inch, or completely coat it with buttons? Satisfy your curiosity, and maybe even discover an inspiration to spice up your own driving experience in this lively book by Art Car documentarian Harrod Blank.
As a teenager, Blank didn't want to be mistaken for a person as bland as his 1965 VW bug, so he started painting on it, attaching things to it, and attracting a heap of attention in a town where he became known for the car with the unforgettable name, Oh My God! Over time, people passing through town let him know that there were others like him around the country who had discovered the same irresistible canvas for self-expression. As a young filmmaker, Blank knew he had to go out there and document these kindred spirits.
Before long, he embarked upon a journey around the country to interview and photograph Art Car artists in the making of his feature documentary (also available from Amazon.com) and companion book, both entitled Wild Wheels. He found them in the most unexpected corners of the U.S., these folk artists who had no concern for traditional art venues, who wanted their art, their message, their self-expressive shrines out there on the streets.
In Wild Wheels we get a vivid glimpse of a range of these artists whose motivations, methods, and works of art are surprisingly varied, who may have only one thing in common: they're all in this book!

Tired of being a commuter car clone? This book's for you!.......1999-07-27
Talk about the power of books! Six years ago, some roadside preacher in a bus covered windshield-to-tail lights in bible verses handed me a book called Wild Wheels. He thought I would enjoy it, seeing as how I was driving a Ford Granada covered in graffiti, and therefore somewhat of a kindred spirit. Well, he was right. Years later, I'm still driving that Granada and mostly thanks to writer/photographer Harrod Blank's campaign to make the American highway a safer place for art. In the stories and bright colorful photos of Wild Wheels, I found the inspiration to turn my graffitied junker into a driving dream, a 2-door art museum on wheels. And though Wild Wheels won't likely have so dramatic an effect on every reader, its universal theme of self-realization through expression will touch every reader's heart.
Featuring over 100 color photos and fascinating anecdotal peeks into the lives of the artists who made the cars, Wild Wheels continues to introduce the world to the pioneers of the now popular car art movement.
The characters and cars in Wild Wheels are so genuine and so funky and so genuinely funky as captured by Blank that they'll have you wondering "Is it real? Did somebody make all this up? Am I really bolting antlers to my hood?" For answers to these and other wild questions, buy this book!! I loved it, and everyone I show it to wants a copy.

Great for car-lovin' kids.......2007-05-08
This book is very colorful, and informative as well. The bright pictures and flaps entertain pre-readers, and there's enough text to amuse older kids (but not too much older). The only knock is that because the images are computer-generated, the human figures are a just a wee bit creepy looking. Picture the characters you might see in a computer game, but not the latest computer game. On the other hand, the cars and backgrounds are beautiful.

Book Description
"Stieglitz is as scholarly a production as anyone could wish, crammed with facts and trailing informative appendixes. It is also a loving and occasionally exasperated look at a contentious relative and the intimate circumstances that formed him." --Time A tireless exponent of the avant-garde and of photography as a fine art, as well as a consummate photographer in his own right, Alfred Stieglitz was both the embodiment of rebellious New York modernism and an oddly domestic man who retained a lifelong attachment to his family's country estate. In Stieglitz: A Memoir/Biography, author Sue Davidson Lowe, Stieglitz's grand-neice, presents the man in all of his complexity, tracing his background and revealing the interplay between his character and his multifaceted career. She offers new insight into Stieglitz's relationships with artists such as Marin, Hartley, Dove, Steichen, and O'Keefe; his pioneering promotion of Europe's most radical artists through the Photo-Secession group and the 291 gallery; and his creation of some of our century's most enduring photographic images. Gracefully weaving personal reminiscence and verifiable fact as she lucidly interweaves Stieglitz's career with his personal life, Lowe presents a uniquely compelling and intimate portrait of a hugely influential, hugely enigmatic American artist.
Customer Reviews:
a thoroughly nuanced account of a problematic figure.......2006-07-07
My interest in this biography was piqued by my mounting scepticism of the claims of early 20th century modernist artists and their promoters, whether critics, collectors or curators. Much of what we think we know about early American modernism is little more than oft repeated hand-me-down information that manifests the bearer's uncritical satisfaction with the modernist enterprise. Such information serves to maintain the artist's place in the modernist temple that subsequent enthusiasts and fans have constructed and served as keepers of the flame. Critical, layered and thorough historical study reveals such notions as ideology, mere mythologizing constructs.
Readers of Ms. Lowe's exceptionally well written biography will find a fair and balanced AND critically engaged account of an adequately talented photographer who was one of the principal apologists of modernist ideas in New York, with a reputation in Europe as well. With his small enclosed (are modernist gatherings ever open?) circle of artists and holding court in his galleries, Alfred Stieglitz combatively denounced skeptical visitors who didn't or wouldn't "get it." This was was the Stieglitzian modernist "my way or the highway" pronouncement which cowed fawning acolytes.
A vorcious AND impressionable reader, he embraced Freudian ideas subsequently discredited in the later 20th century. Believing in the "pure artist untainted by commerce,Stieglitz turned against his young associate Edward Steichen when the latter became successful as an artistic commercial photographer (his career was also characterized by attracting the public; Stieglitz's publications always shed their subscribers who got fed-up with his sermonizing enthusiasms that strayed from photographic matters) Mind you, Steichen accomplished a multi-faceted career without "daddy's money," with which Stieglitz was bankrolled for much of his bohemian life (danke, PaPa!). He seems to also have been his mother's favorite.
Among the book's strong sections are its coverage of the regular gatherings of the Stieglitz clan at the family's summer house in upstate New York. Here family dynamics were played out that revealingly throw Stieglitz's personality into contrast with those of his siblings, friends and younger lover Georgia O'Keefe (one of the more over-rated American artists of the 20th century) who also shared his inflexible termperament.
The author, who spent years meticulously researching available archives (some still remain sealed), has produced a fully-orbed account of the glories and contradictions of an archetypal American modernist. It is a definitive study of Steiglitz and his personal world.
Entirely worthwhile read........2001-07-25
This is an excellent biography. Written by Sue Davidson Lowe, Alfred Stieglitz's niece, "Stieglitz : A Memoir/Biography" is written objectively, yet with the knowingness and acceptance of a relative. This book presents a well-balanced picture of Stieglitz, his accomplishments (not only his own artistic endeavors, but his efforts to make photography an accepted art form), friends, family, and life. When I was done reading this biography, I felt that I had been presented with a coherent, entertaining, and candid portrayal of Stieglitz. I have read many biographies and autobiographies, of these, I have felt that about one-fourth are well-written and worth reading -- this Stieglitz biography is one of them.

Book Description
More than 20 years after Arthur Lowe, who played the legendary Captain Mainwaring, died in 1982, Dad's Army has become a classic comedy series, is regularly repeated all over the world, and has captured yet another generation of enchanted fans. For this first in-depth biography of Lowe, Graham Lord has followed in his footsteps all over Britain and has interviewed both of his sons and other relatives, as well as dozens of actors, friends, and army comrades, including all of the surviving stars of Dad's Army. The result is a vivid and moving account of one of British television's most beloved comic actors.

A Very Well-Researched and Revealing Biography!.......2006-08-18
Of all the celebrity bios I have read, never have I read one so revealing as Graham Lord's 2002 biography of the late Arthur Lowe. What makes this bio so different from most is that Lord had access to the Lowes' personal correspondence and diaries, which makes for a very insightful and interesting read. Nevertheless, I can't help thinking that Lowe must be turning in his grave to know that we, the public (whom Lowe had little respect for), are privy to things never intended for public consumption. Indeed, had Lowe written his memoirs prior to his death in 1982 from a severe stroke (he collapsed in his dressing room in between performances), it certainly would have been a very, very different portrait that we'd have gotten, for what we get here is a harsh, unwhitewashed glimpse of the very private man behind the mask--warts and all--and of his pathetically insecure, alcoholic wife Joan.
Lord is a very capable author, and this book is extremely well researched and nothing short of captivating. The hardcover version has 250 pages of text and there are 16 pages of black-and-white photos, a few of which are stills from series and films but most of which are personal in nature. The book is rife with anecdotes and impressions from the Lowes' personal friends (what few they had), their family members, and their professional colleagues--who include the surviving members of Dad's Army (Bill Pertwee (the Warden), Clive Dunn (Jonesey), Frank Williams (the Vicar) and Ian Lavender (Pike)); Daniel Abineri (Father Duddleswell's young curate on Bless Me Father); John Inman (Mr. Humphries of Are You Being Served?); as well as britcom series' writers Jimmy Perry and David Croft.
Born in 1916, Arthur Lowe is most famous as the pompous, self-important Captain Mainwaring in Dad's Army, a hilarious britcom (which ran from 1968 to 1978 and which some PBS stations thankfully still broadcast in part periodically) about the Home Guard in England during WW2, and a large portion of the book covers the Dad's Army period and is complete with loads of interesting anecdotes about the series and the other actors in it. Older Canadians may also remember Lowe from his role as Swindley in the earliest years of Coronation Street (back in the early 60s). Undoubtedly, however, Lowe is best known amongst North Americans as the curmudgeonly, quick-witted, tight-fisted Father Duddleswell in Bless Me Father, a series which unfortunately gets little coverage in the book.
Suffice it to say one gets more than enough information to form a very complete picture of both Joan and Arthur. For those who are familiar with the very talented late Arthur Lowe--even if that familiarity is limited to his role in Bless Me Father--and are interested in knowing more about the man himself and his personal life, I highly recommend this book.
