Book Description

Here are the traditions of harpsichord making as they might have been taught to young apprentices in five countries where the craft once flourished: Italy, Flanders, France, England, and Germany. The period covered ranges from approximately 1500, when concrete data became available, to 1800, after which the nature of the instrument is no longer of musicological significance.

The author's aim is to "give enough information to make it possible for builders of harpsichords to base their work on certain knowledge of the designs and methods of earlier makers; to guide players of the harpsichord in their search for appropriate instruments, dispositions, and registrations in recreating the music of the past; and to serve as a useful body of information for historians and editors of early keyboard music."

A chapter each is devoted to the five most important schools of harpsichord making. Over forty plates illustrate the most typical harpsichords of each country. Each set of drawings includes a plan drawn to scale, the interior of the instrument, and interesting details of action and construction. These are supplemented by reproductions of illustrations taken from early sources. The appendixes contain texts of relevant documents, including inventories of the shops of some prominent French makers and contemporary descriptions of instruments.

Mr. Hubbard has drawn material from contemporary descriptions of instruments and the mechanical arts such as those found in encyclopedias, technical treatises, books on music theory, and manuals for craftsmen. In addition he has examined hundreds of instruments in European and American collections. His exceptional position as an internationally known harpsichord maker as well as a student of harpsichord history allows him to discuss technical as well as historical matters that would be outside the competence of a musicologist.

5 out of 5 stars The definitive history of harpsichord making.......2006-08-09

A definiteve study by one of the leading exponents in the contemptorary rediscovery of the harpsichord. Strategically illustrated. Exhaustive bibliography. Reading this book will immerse you in the past practices of harpsichord-making, from sawyers and lumbering to varnishes and decorative painting. Amazingly juicy, written in a very engaging style. If you want to know the difference between the German and Flemish makers and their instruments, for example, you will find out about them here. I first read this book when I built a harpsichord kit in my teens. For a kid who hated history, I could not put this down. Hubbard exposes the reader to a well-hidden side of music-making. Stay away if you hate anything baroque or eloquently discursive.

5 out of 5 stars Worth reading repeatedly.......2003-05-30

Frank Hubbard had an amazing combination of talents. As a harpsichord builder, he was one of the principal founders of present-day harpsichord-building practice, which produces superior instruments by imitating the masters of long ago. Hubbard was also a fine scholar: thoughtful, careful, endlessly knowledgeable, and often witty.

Hubbard's book, though nonfiction, has a kind of plot: he documents a slow-moving miracle of instrument-making that took place in Europe over a period of several centuries. Hubbard follows the important changes in building practice as the centers of innovation shifted from Italy, to Flanders, to France, and finally to England and Germany.

This book is a beautiful example what can be accomplished by scholars in the humanities--it's careful, rigorous detective work. Hubbard's endless labors made possible the lovely authentic harpsichords we enjoy today.

This is not a book for everyone, but if you're one of the many people who once put together a harpsichord kit, I'm almost certain you will enjoy this book.

The Cd is lovely to listen to. I was surprised to be listening to the sound of waves breaking on the beach, pleasantly.

This Cd is good but for me it was kind of hard to relax to because it kind of has the same tone pattern throughout the cd which made my mind wander. I really want to try one that has speaking on it. I think it would provide a better guide for me. But all in all I use this occasionally when I need to just try to chill, but I like yoga better!hehe :) Hope this was helpful.

I must confess something (hey, is my manager around?) - I kind of became unable to focus at work in the last months, so much stress took its toll on me, and I'm now trying to get all the help I can. I saw this CD recommended in a Listmania, looked over the existing reviews and ordered one. You know what? IT WORKS! I am now able to do much better, since I work listening to it all the time. After a few days on this CD, I started getting some lecithin help, and the effects apparently combined. I hope that I will improve even more, I'll continue these and also try other relaxation techniques. Anyway, I carry this CD from in my bag, to have it available both at home and in the office. Get yours!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent for studying!.......2005-12-27

I cannot sit and study without having this CD playing through my headphones. I swear this will help you read smoother, understand what you're reading while your reading it, retain information longer, and enhance your study sessions. I simply put the CD in my player, put on some large 'noise-cancelling' headphones, and start reading my textbooks. When it comes times for tests, you will find information recollection coming to you in droves. I swear, this is the best CD out there for studying. Please try it.

These studies on a variety of biblical texts focus deftly on reading, listening to, and proclaiming the gospel in a broken, fragmented, and “post-Christendom” world. Brueggemann explores how these traditions have the potential to continually resonate in our contemporary communities and individual lives.

5 out of 5 stars Another Magical Epiphany of God Present in the Text!.......2003-02-25

After classes with the Master Teacher of Old Testament, I felt a need to dig around in his more recent essays: "The Role of Old Testament Theology in Old Testament Interpretation" ; "Preaching As Sub-version" ; Both his last and first essays!

In his current lectures in Old Testament Theology, Bruegge has progressed from Reformation and Enlightenment through Barth, Eichrodt and von Rad bringing up his issues of historical criticism and post modernism...landing squarely on page 115 with his repeated description of Theo-ology is "speech about God." Then as he does often conclude lectures: It may be from another source can come an alternative to this dominant construal of reality, "perhaps from what Robert Bellah terms the 'republican' tradition... If we work from the ground-up it is entirely possible that lived reality reimagined from this Character (God) who lives on the lips of these witness could offer a wholesale and compelling alternative."

This alternative world is clearly marked out in the first essay "Preaching as Sub-version"..."We say these things to one another because...the utterances mediate the Easter option" as possible, in our practice, imagined in public policy, stated again on pages 17, 25 and 49.

My favorite essays land on the first, "Preaching as Sub-version" and the final two out of nine Jewels of distilled Brueggemann!
One comment about Essay 8, "Crisis-Evoked, Crisis-Resolving Speech." "It is clear that OT Theology cannot effectively advance by focusing on conventional conceptual content in the text." In pointing out the "regresses" of Israel in times of crisis, YHWH both discloses and acknowledges the ways in which God fulfills, but also fails in his relationship to Israel. Here again as in most books and lectures, Bruegge gives the Hebrew words used in Exodus 34:6-7a ; Hosea 2:19-20 ; Isaiah 54:10: As
hesed, rahum, hanun, and 'emeth. I always thank him for using the English spellings.

Sincerely for both Bruce Day and Professor Bruegge.

4 out of 5 stars "we are in a deep dislocation in our society...".......2001-03-18

...so Brueggemann begins the 5th chapter of "Deep Memory..." This is the third book in a series focussed on using Old Testament scriptures to illuminate problems in our post-modern society. As in the previous two books, each chapter will appeal to different readers in diverse ways. Some are of mostly theological interest; some are more visceral. The theme explored in all of them is the similarity between the culture of Isreal in Exile (ca.587BCE)and our own shattered society 26 centuries later.both they and we can no longer trust the institutions or the God that defined and dominated our communities until very recently. Brueggemann says that "...denial and despair are powerfully at work to prevent any serious engagement of the crisis of dislocation into which we are now plunged." These lead to self-preoccupation and self indulgence, words that aptly describe the "winner-take-all" world I see around us today. The author asks us to return to the Exilic scriptures (Samuel, the Psalms and Isaiah are used as examples) to see what help we can draw from the Hebrew relationship with Yahweh. In the past we have often set aside some of these verses because they cause conflict and pain to our post-enlightenment sensabilities. Brueggemann argues that we need to wrestle with these also; there is much to be learned from exploring why they wound us so deeply. These texts would not have been passed on unless they were of importance to the identity of both Isreal and the Christian community. This testimony by a people in exile about their relationship with their God can give us language with which to confront the narcissistic, neighbor-sacrificing culture that surrounds us.

A fair amount of attention is devoted to describing how our relationship with Yahweh has devolved since the Reformation (and later the Enlightenment), but the blame is spread evenly and not dwelled upon. Instead it provides a map with which to get back to the words and relationship we have lost and are desperate to recover. An alternative community, living in communion with God's steadfast-love, is the kingdom that all believers are called to. Dr. Brueggemann's final thoughts urge us to use Old Testament theology to turn away from the brutality of our self-centered society long enough to examine the possibilities of a deeper relationship with God.

I found that reading the noted scripture texts in my own Bible greatly enhanced the meaning of each chapter and made this good devotional as well as educational reading.

                Book Description

“The American Negro,” Arthur Schomburg wrote in 1925, “must remake his past in order to make his future.” Many Harlem Renaissance figures agreed that reframing the black folk inheritance could play a major role in imagining a new future of racial equality and artistic freedom. In Deep River Paul Allen Anderson focuses on the role of African American folk music in the Renaissance aesthetic and in political debates about racial performance, social memory, and national identity.
Deep River elucidates how spirituals, African American concert music, the blues, and jazz became symbolic sites of social memory and anticipation during the Harlem Renaissance. Anderson traces the roots of this period’s debates about music to the American and European tours of the Fisk Jubilee Singers in the 1870s and to W. E. B. Du Bois’s influential writings at the turn of the century about folk culture and its bearing on racial progress and national identity. He details how musical idioms spoke to contrasting visions of New Negro art, folk authenticity, and modernist cosmopolitanism in the works of Du Bois, Alain Locke, Zora Neale Hurston, Langston Hughes, Jean Toomer, Sterling Brown, Roland Hayes, Paul Robeson, Carl Van Vechten, and others. In addition to revisiting the place of music in the culture wars of the 1920s, Deep River provides fresh perspectives on the aesthetics of race and the politics of music in Popular Front and Swing Era music criticism, African American critical theory, and contemporary musicology.
Deep River offers a sophisticated historical account of American racial ideologies and their function in music criticism and modernist thought. It will interest general readers as well as students of African American studies, American studies, intellectual history, musicology, and literature.

3 out of 5 stars A VIEW OF SOUTHERN RELIGION.......2002-05-07

In this small book Erskine Caldwell shares with us his memories of his father and the world of southern religion. You are transported back in time where the more bizarre the religious expression was in the south, the better. Caldwell shows the excesses of religion and the struggle for southern churches to acquire more respectability as their economic status becomes more stable.

Caldwell sounds like an amateur sociologist on his observation of the religion of his region. His ignorance is especially telling when he attempts to describe the life in the Black churches. He is obviously not a church historian. His critique on southern religion of his time is interesting but at times he beats the dead horse to the ground. He dwells to much on the excesses and doesn't see to much good.

The most interesting character in this memoir is that of the author's father. Ira Caldwell,a presbyterian minister of a small sect of the denomination, is a man far ahead of his time. His social consciousness, intellectual acumen and liberal ideas were far out of step with the social and religious milieu of his time. How he survived in such an environment is an interesting story within itself. It is Caldwell's father who keeps you riveted in wanting to know more about his thoughts and ministry.

Deep South is a good book to have in order to gain insight on Caldwell's thoughts about the church and religion. It is also a text which gives tribute to the work of Caldwell's father. For those wishing to gain some idea of southern religion during Caldwell's childhood, this is an ideal book.

                    Product Description

This is a NAVAL POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL MONTEREY CA report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A841524. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: To accommodate the need for power on deep space missions, satellites must carry a source capable of providing adequate power for the life of the mission. This is currently done using radioisotope thermoelectric generators (RTGs). Current RTGs consist of a heat source, Pu-238, and a thermocouple that inefficiently converts heat into electricity. To improve the overall efficiency of RTGs, a better thermoelectric converter is needed to replace the thermocouple. This thesis examines the possible use of thermophotovoltaic (TPV) cells in RTGs. Two cells were developed and optimized for the spectrum from a 1300K blackbody that simulates the spectrum of an RTG heat source. Current TPV cells are built and tested with different thicknesses and doping levels to the most efficient design, an expensive and time-consuming method. This thesis presents a model that can predict the output of a cell under various spectra. The model can easily be changed to simulate different cell thicknesses and doping levels, and it can be changed to simulate cells of different materials. The models presented in this thesis were built using the Silvaco Virtual Wafer Fabrication software package. To prove the capabilities of this software package in designing TPV models, an initial cell was designed using a well-documented material: gallium arsenide (GaAs). Voltage-current characteristics and frequency response data were recorded from this model and compared with experimental data from a similar cell. Once the model was verified, more exotic materials could be examined: gallium antimonide (GaSb) and indium gallium arsenide (InGaAs).
