Great Book.......2007-02-09
As the title says, this is really a great book.
I've always loved westerns - whether they be films, old television shows or books. The problem with books is that if I discover a writer I really enjoy, I'll tend to stick with him until I've read everything he's written and then I'm back at square 1 - looking for another great book / writer.
Well, in William Johnstone and his Eagle series, I've come up smelling like roses.
Song of Eagles is a fantastic book which once again follows the trail of Jamie's son, Falcon MacCallister.
In Song of Eagles, Falcon finds himself in Lincoln, New Mexico seeking out an old friend of his father's, famed cattlebaron, John Chisum.
However, the timeline is linked to the infamous Lincoln County War and Falcon quickly finds himself smack dab in the middle of the conflict. Fortunately, he has the good sense to align himself with the good guys - John Tunstall, the Regulators and, of course, the most famous participant - William Bonney aka Billy The Kid.
I really enjoyed the way that Johnstone integrated Falcon into the conflict - he essentially stuck to the historical transcript - he didn't make up alot of fictitious storyline. And it was very interesting to read about the burgeoning relationship between famed gunfighter Falcon and the teenager he liked so much - Billy The Kid.
Unlike many / all of L'Amour's good guys, Falcon reminds me alot of Eastwood's Man With No name in the sense that he's a "good" guy, but he can be "bad" when the situation warrants it. He's not a back shooter, for example, however, if he has no use for somebody who no longer deserves to enjoy oxygen, he'll think nothing of ventilating him with lead.
As mentioned, this is a very good read and if the reader, for example, is not too familiar with the events and circumstances of the Lincoln County war, I suspect this book might motivate the reader to learn more about Billy The Kid and the conflict.
As for me, it's motivated me to order some more of the Eagle series books I haven't already read.
If you like westerns, then you'll love this book and falcon MacCallister.
a great character was created but.......2006-12-19
there's a flaw that johnstone's editor never got the guts to advise the author: when telling a story, the author's major craftsmanship is to allow the reader going back to whenever the author wants to put them into that particular time frame and never has to expose or remind what's gonna happen next. but johnstone in this novel repeatedly did something he should not have done. here's what i have to point out:
chapter one, page 7, 'MANY MEN WERE GOING TO DIE WITH THAT SMILE BEING THE LAST THING THEY SAW ON THE EARTH .'
you're telling us a story that should be unfolded in sequence and it should not be unveiled beforehands. but here, johnstone told the readers as in his commentary that billy the kid will kill a lot of people in the coming future. an absolutely unnecessary advanced footnote that should be omitted or deleted.
again, on page 15, 'the next day the kid introduced himself as billy bonney. THIS WAS THE FIRST TIME HE'D USED THIS ALIAS.' another unnecessary pointless commentary by the author, and again, his editor failed to point it out to suggest an omission.
on and on, and again and again, johnstone kept doing this footnote to the readers and pulling them out of a good story that they should find out by themselves along with the storyline.
johnstone is a very good western genre writer, all of his stories are quite interesting, but there's always some room for sharpening and improvement. i just happened to notice such 'STOP' SIGNS in this one and wish i could blacken those unnecessary lines like what we used to find in the de-classified documents.
The Defender.......2003-05-01
Falcon McCallister will risk his life to defend the Great American West. In the Eagles series you will See William W. Johnstone at his best. The McCalisters are tough, honest, principled devoted men and women. These storys are fast, exciting, and just plain wonderful. The McCalisters will go to the ends of the earth and give you all they have if you need help.

Book Description
A board book version of this favorite nursery rhyme with added adventure.
Customer Reviews:
A huge disappointment.......2005-03-20
I recently received several books in this series as a gift for my 4 year-old daughter's birthday. However all the enthusiasm in the world could not generate a positive response to this book. While the pictures are often interesting, I found the dialogue to be somewhat derivative and contrived. The story drags on and on and the rhymes are very strange indeed. Other reviewers below have noted how the additional verses do not seem to fit into the story. I found many of the rhymes to sound forced and unnatural when reading them back to my daughter. This book is all hype and no substance.
Perhaps future books in this series can be improved if the author can create something more original.
It's Raining, It's Pouring, but this book isn't boring!.......2003-07-02
This extension of the familiar nursery rhyme takes readers through several other verses dealing with the weather as well as the Old Mans weight problem. Kin Eagle writes an amusing account of how grandpa responds to different environmental conditions. Hyperbole is rampant but charm is the main ingredient.
Several reviewers have commented on the "weird rhymes" used in this story. However I extend accolades for Eagle on originality. I've always thought there should be more to it than some old man snoring in a coma from a head injury the night before. Now thanks to Eagle I even know the old man's name!
The illustrations are what really make this book a good find. The old man pictured in this book is a very familiar looking man somewhat like the typical grandpa stereotype. Rob Gilbert also draws in a wife. My favorite part of the illustrations though is the use of bright cheery colors. A special treatment has even been given to the raindrops, snowflakes and dragonfly wings that makes them sorta shimmer and stand out from the surface of the rest of the picture. (Library bound version). The pictures are amusing and popping.
Best of all, kids liked it. I listened to this one as my wife read it to 16 preschoolers during story time at the public library. They liked the story. With a large group like the one we entertained, a story that captures the children's attention and imagination is great. The familiarity of the song helped, but the originality of the story was probably the greatest asset to the experience.
Great Pictures but Weird Rhyme Additions.......2001-01-13
This board book extends the traditional rhyme, "It's raining it's pouring, the old man is snoring, he bumped his head and went to bed and couldn't get up in the morning." For instance, another rhyme starts, "It's windy, it's breezy" and "It's snowing, it's blowing..." etc. The illustrations are thoughtful, colorful, and visually interesting, but as the Horn Book reviewer notes, the new rhymes are not particularly appropriate...some are kind of weird. For example, one is "It's snowing, it's blowing, the old man is growing, he ate too much one day for lunch now every part of him is showing." I'd like this book better with different rhymes. I enjoy creative extensions of traditional rhymes (like I really like Iza Trapani's Itsy Bitsy Spider, but this book just didn't do it for me.
two thumbs up.......1999-12-02
This book is great to teach children how to read . It has very good ryming and is very entrtaining.
It's Raining IT's Pouring.......1999-12-02

Very good book with a few shortcomings.......2001-04-24
If you know what a chords are, this book is "EZ." I know my basic chords and found this book to be good. I wish they would put all words under the music instead of putting extra verses to the side -- "Takin It Easy" is an example of what I found frustrating. Overall, I found it easy to play and (IMHO) I sound good playing these songs.
Good book to get for a large colection of Eagles Songs.......1999-09-01
I've only been playing guitar for a short time (three years). I love the Eagles but haven't found alot of their music that was printed as it was played on the albums. This is the best I have seen. The short comings would be that it isn't in tab for beginners. It does have the chords noted above the staff. Definately not a book for early beginners. I would recommend it to anyone who has been playing for a little while and loves the Eagles music as I do. This book has ALL the classic Eagle songs....GET IT NOW! Feel free to email me if you have questions
SAVE YOUR MONEY...........1998-11-24
My advice to any beginning guitar player would be to aviod any book labeled as EASY. Most beginning players dont take the time to learn how to sight read, most only read tablature. The EASY guitar books are not tablature they are simply the melody line. Spend the extra money and buy the guitar recorded version of this or any other guitar book you have in mind.

Customer Reviews:
Ruth Wind has a plus-size heroine...........2004-04-20
and that makes the book worth wild! I loved all the characters from Ruth's short story even the character of the baby. I just wish it was longer. I also enjoyed Madeline Baker's short story and will check out her other novels. I learned things about Native American culture from Baker's story and I want to learn more! Kathleen Eagle's story didn't do anything for me and I couldn't finish that story. Yet, I would recommend this book. You're bound to like one of these short stories.

Hey Diddle Diddle made me a hero.......1999-01-05
I gave Hey Diddle Diddle to my 5 1/2 year old niece for Christmas while visiting my family at the end of December. You know how you never know what gift will be THE BIG HIT at Christmas time? I don't mind telling you that I was completely surprized at how she took to this book. I read it to her at least twice a day for an entire week. She loved this book. I ended up buying 3 more copies to send out to other children (boss' kid, etc.)

Book Description
Old-man, or Napa, as he was called by the Blackfeet, is an extraordinary character in Indian folklore. He appears in different guises: god or creator, fool, thief, clown. Subordinate to Manitou, the Deity, Old-man is both powerful and fallible. The world he made is marvelous but filled with mistakes. As a result, tension between the haves and have-nots explodes in Indian Why Stories. Because all creation shimmers with spirit, the consequences are cosmic.
Frank B. Linderman kept as close as possible to the Indian style of storytelling, using only the tales told to him by elders of the Blackfeet, Chippewa, and Cree tribes in the early days of the twentieth century. Indian Why Stories recalls a timeless scene: in the early evening a medicine man sits before a lodge fire, relating tales of the old days to attentive youngsters of the tribe. He tells about the animal people—the deer and antelope in a footrace, the dancing fox who convulses the buffalo with laughter, the white beaver and ghost-people, the huge snake in love with the moon, the sparrow hawk of conscience, and many more. These stories have a moral framework, revealing a reverence for life, emphasis on honesty, and the unity of creation.

Book Description
In this amusing story, an old woman encounters an eagle for the first time. Perplexed by its unfamiliar appearance, she insists that it must be a pigeon and tries to make it so. Her efforts mirror a common pattern of human thought: altering the unfamiliar to make it acceptable. This tale is one of a series specially presented for children by the Afghan author Idries Shah, who, for more than 30 years, collected stories from the Sufi tradition and adapted them to contemporary Western culture. Told since ancient times throughout Afghanistan, Central Asia and the Middle East, such tales are used by Sufis to foster greater mental flexibility and insight in young and old alike.

A Brilliant book for adults too.......2005-01-20
This book has a lesson that adults should heed. It is the tale of an old woman that encounters and eagle. The interation leeads to a surprising ending. A great bedtime read and a gem
A fine story of how not to change others.......2003-06-10
An old woman encounters an eagle for the first time, and decides to change its unsightly appearance to suit her own ideas of what a bird should look like. The old woman gets her way; but the eagle is saddened by his new pigeon-like appearance, until a sympathetic comrade decides to help out. A fine story of how not to change others, The Old Woman And The Eagle is a very highly recommended picturebook story.
Book Description
This book surveys the use of mind-altering plants in eleven societies in the Americas, Asia, Australia and New Guinea, ranging from the hunter-gatherers to complex ancient civilizations such as the Inca, the Moche, and the Maya. Those interested in rituals and religions of traditional societies and folk medicine will find a great deal of information in this concise, illustrated volume. Several themes emerge from de Rios's cross-cultural examination of sacred plants. She argues convincingly that plant hallucinogens, which have been used from time immemorial, influenced human evolution. She discusses religious beliefs, including those of shamanism, which may have been influenced by the mind-altering properties of particular plants. She also focuses on the ways in which hallucinogens have influenced ethical and moral systems.
