No Violin Part.......2007-07-14
Amazon shipped this order twice without including the violin part. Finally I gave up and ordered it from another source. Return was a minor hassle as Amazon told me to preprint a return label which they they wanted to charge me for via deduction from refund. After a protest they came around and refunded entire price.
Good music, but a little tough for a true beginner.......2007-01-10
These solos start with a few quite easy songs, but very quickly the solos become much more difficult. There doesn't seem to be much for the "just a little better than rank beginner" player. That said, the music is much more satisfying than most available in books for beginning players.

Amazonian and Altiplano Travelogue.......2006-11-10
I bought this book because, having extensively traveled in Peru and horse-packed in the Peruvian Andes, I was interested in what the book had to say. Although the book was written 24 years before I first went to Peru, it was interesting to see how little had changed in those ensuing years. Not having been in the Amazon basin, I cannot speak to Peter Matthiesen's observations about the Indian tribes in the area, although I detected a lot of "gringo" condescension on his part. I flat out disagree with his characterizations of the "altiplano" indians, finding them warm, humorous and interested in "turistas" and travelers. The young children are amazing! They have no creature comforts, tend llamas, alpacas, and spin wool at the tender age of three or four, yet have the most beautiful smiles and natures! Peter Matthiesen is obviously a expert, dedicated birdwatcher, and naturalist, detailing many of his sightings. Matthiesen's encounters with Peruvian "artful dodgers" are well told and his many travails, particularly on the Urabamba river are exciting.
Adventures through the Pongo on a raft.......2001-09-11
What I like about Matthiessen's account is that he has no clear destination (e.g, through "some remarkably bad planning, I crossed the Andes nine times in five months")., and hence open to adventure and experience. He writes of what he sees and what affects him. He also is reflective about how he effects the local residents or native Machiguenga guides. I have some sadness that the tribes he encountered (1960's) may no longer be there. He writes honestly, not claiming superiority, for example he takes pistol shots at crocodiles. His adventure down the Urubamba was particularly compelling ... would he find the giant crocodile bones, would he find the lost city ruins? Along the way he manages to accomplish something remarkable (the traverse of the Pongo), and as any proud adventurer, tries to understand if his adventure was historically unique. For bird watchers, there is an added enjoyment of trying to identify some of the birds he describes along the way. This travel journal sets a standard for other adventurers and for my own daily journals.

Matthiessen always teaches,in a quiet sober way.The extent of his experience coupled with a wonderful style has always made his subject fascinating. The Cloud Forest is no exception. From ornothology,Buddhisum, indigious peoples, spirituality, the environment,to his fiction... on every subject he gives the reader a clear insight.Quammen, Lopez,Finnegan,Mcgune,Proulx et al,all in one.Simply the best.
What's with Ginsberg?.......1999-12-08
Macchu Picchu, a giant fossilized mandible, steam ships, and Allen Ginsberg. What can be wrong with a book that features all that. Seriously, this is a great book. Good culutral anthropology without all the anthropology to get in the way. From his depiction of the natives to his own almost childlike desire to explore and see, Matthiessen conveys a great story in a great way. Not exactly up to the Snow Leopard's level, but a great read.
Book Description
Spectacularly set on a steep mountain in the Himalayas and founded in the 10th century, Lamayuru monastery, is the oldest spiritual center of Ladakh in Northern India. Although mostly in ruins with only a few buildings remaining beside the main assembly hall (Dukhang), it is still unsurpassed in its sheer grandeur of woodcarvings, statues and frescoes. The Dukhang was redecorated in 1970 with paintings depicting guardian divinities, and symbolism varying from benign to wrathful to serene. The Tibetan Buddhist attitude to spiritual art is that it has an inherent power to help the viewer come to self-realization by inviting contemplation of those aspects of our being which usually remain hidden.
This journal cover pays homage to the Tibetan love of exuberant decoration with the signature turquoise blue exquisitely embellished with gold. The Clouds midi traveller journal also includes ribbon page markers, memento pouches, and an elastic end-leaf enclosure.

Fresh.......2005-08-08
These days, it's only too common for us to read books about Chinese who had a hard time living under Mao's reign in China. After a while, everything became a cliche and it became all too difficult to have empathy for them somewhat. This book was a bit like that but it didn't delve in that for too long. Rather, it touched upon the Monkey King story, a fable that Chinese had been brought up with including myself. What I didn't know then was it's actually based upon a true event, the monk himself, XuanZhang. The rest of the fable was naturally dramatised to captivate people's interest and to transport listener's from turbulence and chaos of the time. It's not a mean feat for a monk to defy the Chinese Empire and to head to India to get himself more immersed in Buddhism and to bring sutras and other relevant items back to somehow "enlighten" his people. The journey itself took 18 years and nobody could brag to accumulate so much mileage in that period of time and to actually translate so many sutras into Chinese. XuanZhang would have inducted himself into the World Records of Fame. In that aspect, this book became a "Lonely Planet" book of his time as XuanZhang jotted down of his minute observations of the places that he had been. It then also became an adventure book describing how he overcame avalanche, appeasing robbers, survived in the desert for 4 days without water. Mark Burnett of "Apprentice" fame would have made a reality TV show based on him!!! Then, there's a bit of anthropology going on as the writer tackled to dissect what made XuanZhang the person that he was. Last but not least, the writer also endeavoured to become Jonathan Spence as she discussed about the Chinese Empire, and political mood of the time. There was also mentioning of grave diggers as well, and many of them happened to be Westerners who "ransacked" the historical places rather than getting the pieces from proper channels. Anyway, it's quite ironic to note that some German archealogists commented that they did China a favour by bringing them to German museum for perservation only to have them annihilated into pieces when the Allies bombed Germany during World War 2. Once we engaged into this book, we would find the present time is strikingly similar to the past. Life and death is truly a hair brush away. In all these aspects, this book is really Jack of trade, master of none. Whilst there's no denying that this book tackles a rather difficult topic, I sincerely think that the author should keep her chin high for having the courage to carrying such a complicated task with such aplomb. A rather refreshing book to read and good for self-knowledge. Commendable reading.

The island of New Guinea is hardly the most hospitable place in the world. Dozens of live volcanoes punctuate the mountainous terrain and tremors shake the island daily. So high are the mountains of Papua New Guinea that this most tropical of islands actually boasts snow on its highest peaks. Not until the middle of the 19th century did Europeans pay much attention to a land that apparently offered little in the way of natural resources; when the Dutch finally arrived in 1848, they claimed only the western half of the island. By the beginning of the 20th century, all of New Guinea had been claimed, but only the coastal regions were settled or explored. No one knew that hidden amidst the forbidding peaks of the central highlands were one million tribal people and the island's most fertile lands.
By the time Isabella Tree arrived in Papua New Guinea, the highlands and its people had been discovered by the West, and their lives were rapidly being transformed--not always for the better. In Islands in the Clouds, Tree takes the reader on a remarkable journey through this extraordinary, perilous land. Weaving historical events into present experience, Tree limns a moving portrait of New Guinea--its people, culture, and its rapidly vanishing way of life.
Customer Reviews:
Nice Introduction to PNG.......2000-04-08
Islands in the Clouds is one of the better travelogues to come out as part of the Lonely Planet Journeys series. Tree gives a good overview of the history, sociology and culture of the highlands of Papua New Guinea in an well-paced, beautifully written tale. Adding to the value of the book is its Tok Pisin glossary, which makes for a nice introduction to the pidgin/creole language of PNG.
Interested in New Guinea? You'll enjoy this book very much........1999-08-12
I've been to Papua New Guinea, and I found this a very enjoyable read. Isabella Tree lets you get to know the people she meets, and her writing style really takes you along with her. This is just a short note to say "give this one a try."

worst [money] I ever spent.......2002-02-01
This book would have been rated 0 stars if that were an option. Its sparse 182 pages is completely devoid of information, prefering to fill white-space with microsoft clip art and large font drivel. For example, a full page is dedicated to three different ways of labelling the spine of a three-ring binder. Can I have my money back, please?

Breaking Trail: A Climbing Life
ASIN: 1580050336 |
Book Description
Going where no one had gone before, three women pooled their resources, sailed to India, flew to Kathmandu, and trekked the remote Jugal Himal, a far-flung, hitherto unexplored region of the Himalaya.
Written over 40 years ago, Tents in the Clouds documents this unprecedented adventure. Part travel journal and part historical account, it's a lively story of the expedition's achievements. Theirs was the first ascent of an unknown peak over 22,000 feet; and as they crossed daunting passes and pristine valleys, they investigated the flora and fauna and corrected maps of one of the least accessible areas of the world.
Available in America for the first time, this illustrated record comes at the peak of public interest in the sport of mountain climbing.
Customer Reviews:
Well told but not wildly exciting.......2000-10-10
Told in a dry, humorous style, this will appeal to readers who enjoyed the works of Houston/Bates and Shipton. It's a little short on high climbing drama, but is still a reasonably engaging read. I found it interesting that these women in the 1950's had so little trouble with their guides and porters, by comparison with some later expeditions.
WOMEN IN THE CLOUDS...A BLAST FROM THE PAST.......2000-08-21
This is a chronicle of the historic journey made by the 1955 first all female expedition to the Himalayas. It is an amazing adventure for those Betty Crocker days. While it ocassionally reads like a buddy book, its flavor is somewhat anachronistic and reflective of its time. It makes for a very interesting read.
This expedition, a somewhat grandiose term for a group of three women and their Sherpas, endeavored to explore the remote and then uncharted area of Nepal called the Jugal Himal. Their journey and trek through Nepal makes for a travelogue of delightful descriptions and anecdotes.
Unlike many modern day expeditions, these three women exhibited nothing but synchronized teamwork throughout their journey. This was not an ego trip for them. They were motivated by a genuine curiosity of the world in which they lived and an appreciation of the different people and cultures with which they came in contact.
True adventurers, they climbed unexplored ranges and reached the summit of a 22,000 plus peak without supplementary oxygen. They did all this without any casualties. It was very important for this particular expedition to be successful, because there were many nay sayers at the time who would have been only too willing to jump up and shout that women were not fit for such a venture. Thankfully, they were able to prove them wrong. Wonen can climb and lead an expedition!
Terrific reading for mountaineers and true adventure buffs........2000-04-06
In the spring of 1955, the Jugal Himal region of the Himalayan mountain range was an unexplored mystery when three women embarked on the first all-female expedition to the Himalaya. All three participants were obscure mountaineers unknown to the general public when they made their first ascent of a 22,000-foot peak. Tents In The Clouds: The First Women's Himalayan Expedition is a thrilling account of their adventure which is as stirring today as it was when first published in 1956. This new and revised edition includes nearly thirty stunning photographs, as well as a new foreword by renowned mountaineer Arlene Blum. Tents In The Clouds is secure in the annals of women's studies as both a classic of climbing literature and a testament to gender equality issues.
An Echo from Another World.......2000-01-21
Imagine...It's the 1950s. Only two years since Sir Hillary's first ascent of Mount Everest. There is no Polartec. No GoreTex. No Polypro longjohns. No plastic bags! And you can't afford oxygen, or an altimeter that reads over 8,000 feet. And yet, you and your two best buddies decide to go treking in the Himalayas, leaving husband and boyfriends behind. Explore unknown, unnamed mountains, ascend over 22,000 feet, and return to tell the tale! That is exactly what three women did in 1955, in the first women's Himalayan expedition. Two of them wrote "Tents in the Clouds" when they got back, and what a unique, gripping, funny, amazing adventure they tell. Long out of print, the book has now been reissued, with photos, by Seal Press. When a copy fell into my hands, I stayed up all night reading it, then dreamed moutain dreams. It is an inspiration! Easy to read, sprinkled with humor, and capturing all the challenge of snow, wind, ice, bitter cold and thin air without being either whiny or macho, I hope it will reach an audience from here to Tibet and as huge as Everest. Take a step back from the world we live in and imagine...
