Book Description
Over 90% of all deaf children are born to hearing parents. For most of these mothers and fathers, their own child is the first deaf person they have ever met. Raising a child who can hear is a challenging and difficult task, but raising a deaf child can seem like an overwhelming responsibility, especially with the mass of conflicting information and advice offered by professionals and well-meaning friends and family members. In Raising and Educating a Deaf Child, Marc Marschark offers parents and teachers a readable and comprehensive summary including everything a parent would want to know about growing up deaf. Parents of a deaf child, like the parents of any child, want to know the answers to some apparently straightforward questions, such as "What kind of school will provide my child with the best education?" "What language experience is best for my child, sign or speech?" "Will my child be able to get a good job?" Marschark addresses these questions and more, with topics ranging from what it means to be deaf and the uniqueness of Deaf culture to the medical causes of early hearing loss, from technological aids for the deaf such as TTYs and cochlear implants to the educational and social opportunities available to deaf children. He describes the many ways that the environment of home and school can influence a deaf child's chances for success in both academic and social circles. Above all, he emphasizes the need for early detection of hearing loss and the importance of being able to communicate with deaf children from a very early age, recommending that all parents of deaf children learn sign language and use it often. This is not a "how to" book or one with all the "right" answers for raising a deaf child. This is a guide through the many conflicting suggestions and programs for raising deaf children, as well as the likely implications of taking one direction or the other. A leading researcher himself, Marschark makes sense of the most current educational and scientific literature, including his own recent research, and talks to deaf children, their parents, and deaf adults about what is important to them. The result is a readable and enlightening survey of what we know about the language, social, and intellectual development of deaf children, and what educational and practical issues face them and their families. Parents of deaf children can and should make their own decisions, based on what is right for their family and for their child. Armed with Raising and Educating a Deaf Child, parents will have access to the bets information available, allowing them to make informed decisions for their child.

Great book!.......2002-12-12
This is the book you are looking for if you are the parent of a Deaf child. Tons of good information that is based on fact and not prejudice. The only negative thing I can say is the book was designed for the educated professional type of parent and includes advanced vocabulary and smallish print. You won't find illustrations, checklists or simplified information. Very excellent material that should help parents make informed decisions rearing their Deaf child. This is the kind of information that helped me to raise my own Deaf son who is now a happy and successful adult.
Raising and Educating A Deaf child.......2001-10-06
This is a most practical, sensitive book that is appealing for educators as well as families of deaf children. The author is renowned for his work in cognition and psychology, but demonstrates a wonderful understanding of deaf children through the eyes of an individual who seems to know their needs first hand. Any parent or teacher reading this book will get a sense of the complexities involved in raising a deaf child, but will also get a sense of hope and support for developing appropriate
guidance and nurturing. The author makes sure to speak to his audience as one among them and offers a wealth of advice regarding educational possibilities to audiological support to socio-emotional growth.
This is an unassuming book that provides light at the end of the tunnel. Honest and sincere.
Some interesting tidbits.......2001-07-21
This book gave me some good perspective on working with my deaf students. It did gives many opinions that I disagree with in the course of my own studies.
Shoud be titled "Why you should use ASL for your child".......2000-11-07
This book claims to be a resource on the choises for educating your deaf child. It is not. The entire book focuses on using ASL as the means of communicating with your child. That would not be bad- if it didn't present itself as an unbiased book. After it says that ASL should be used, it then makes you feel worse by saying that if you are a hearing parent with a deaf child, you probably won't become that fluent in it anyway. There aren't references either- so I am not sure where the author gets his information. It may be true, but there should footnotes on many of the claims. If you do choose to read this book, don't make it the first book you read after you find out your child is deaf. That is what I did and all it did was depress me. In truth, I haven't finished it and probably will leave it on the shelf to pick up after I finish a few others.
Book Description
A Black Parent's Handbook to Educating Your Children is a guide describing ways in which parents can play a much more active and productive role towards "our" children's educational growth and development at home. Thoughout the Black community, there is a tremendous amount of debate and discussion about the problems of the public school system, and it's impact on the future of "our" children. This necessitates the need for parents to maintain maximum involvement.

He practices what he preaches!.......2007-02-04
I met Baruti K. Kafele two weeks ago where he is Principal of Essex Vocational and Technical High School in Newark, New Jersey. He is a wonderful principal. He is one of those kind of principals that will be famous for all the right reasons. His students (700 of them) are well disciplined. Mr. Kafele gladly spends his Saturday mornings administering school detention for students who don't hand in homework or are late to school twice in the week or for whatever reason. I don't have the book but I have had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Kafele who spends his time not behind closed office doors doing office work. He makes unexpected visits to his teachers' classrooms. He expects the students (all 700 of them) are required to have 2 hours of homework a night including studying and reading. Mr. Kafele is on fire as he says and he expects his students to achieve beyond their expectations. Mr. Kafele does not think of his position as a principal as a vocation but a mission.
Buy It and Use It.......2003-06-24
I enjoy the book so much, that I give copies to my clients, family and friends. An excellent book that is easy to read and follow. Makes a great gift to parents and teachers.

Book Description
This study addresses the increasing tumult over the commercialization of higher education - a battle over profit and principle, money and mission. While many issues in higher education encompass the mission and values of the university, the operation of for-profit subsidiaries by nonprofit universities provides the potential for an especially contentious clash. Some faculty have been especially vocal in this debate, claiming that the culture of the academy is being irreparably altered as traditional values are being replaced by a corporate style of management, or by some hybrid.
By answering the questions of why for-profit subsidiaries of nonprofit universities were created, how they are governed and managed, and what the nature of the relationship with their nonprofit parent is, this book contributes to a better understanding of the larger controversy over whether universities have become too business-like, too market oriented, and whether they have sold their souls and values in the process. In essence, the book provides a window into whether it is possible to do business like a business-a trend afoot in the academy-and still retain allegiance to core values.

Math + Gender Studies.......2007-05-03
Scholars have moved away from discussing "masculinity" to discussing "masculinities." Usually that means discussing cultural characteristics of different types of males: older vs. younger, gay vs. straight, white vs. of color, etc. Here, however, the author deems mathematics as a masculine activity and thus she speaks for males and females performing different masculinities. The title may lead some to think this book would entirely concern males and that is far from the case.
The author thinks multidirectionally. She asks how math shapes women and also how women shape math. She troubles, she would say "she queers," the idea of "choice." She seeks to prove that just because females opt out of math doesn't mean it was not a forced decision.
This book may frustrate readers. The author begins by analyzing students at three different schools and then drops them. There are several chapters that have nothing to do with her interview pool. The author wants to destabilize binaries, what Wes Crichlow refers to as "Manichean" concepts. Still, many chapters drop that theme altogether. As an American, it's still difficult for me to understand A levels and O levels and all that. But if you translate her concern into, "Why do so few women major in math during college?", you'll understand her ideas. The author does a lot of gleaning. She'll describe something she observed and then apply all kinds of theory to back it up. So many feminist writers build off of Adrienne Rich mostly or alone or Simone de Beauvoir mostly or alone that it may jolt readers the way this author pulls concepts from everywhere and the kitchen sink.
To her credit, the author basically says, "Math is just as racialized and classed as it is gendered, but I'm focusing on gender here." When discussing Black students, she brings up Black scholars. However, many of her subjects were Asian and she says close to nothing on their ethnicity. I wonder if Asian-American studies has really impacted this nation in a way that an equivalent hasn't been achieved in Britain. When I took calculus, all the female students were Asian and they composed half of the class. Because their fathers or both parents were doctors, they wanted to be doctors too and knew math was a requirement to that goal. Taking advanced math didn't damage their feminine identity in the slightest. It's a bit troubling when you have a multiracial pool, yet only the Blacks are deemed racialized.
This book is not an easy read. Even I'm surprised that I read this while not being in some fancy graduate school. As much as the authors critiques the idea that seeing more female mathematicians would bring more women into the field, I think the author acts as a role model in that she can conquer both math and gender studies at a time when many would think even intelligent people can only focus on one or the other. You have to be a very sophisticated reader to understand this text.

Description:
I offer new evidence on the adjustment of local labor markets to geographic shifts in labor demand within US metropolitan areas using a unique data set in which metropolitan subregions are geographically matched across the 1970-1980 and 1980-1990 decades. The evidence uncovered paints the following picture. Workers, especially those with less education, make incomplete adjustments within metropolitan areas in response to intra-metropolitan demand shifts. Although blacks may not make especially limited adjustments, they have disproportionately suffered deleterious effects from job movements because the demand shifts have tended to be away from their places of residence.
