A good start.......2005-01-13
Photography Guide For Kids is a slim, informative, quick read for kids who like to take creative pictures. I bought this for my son who is ten years old and has been snapping shots since he got his first Fisher Price camera when he was five. I noticed his interest in photography when he would ask to go for walks to test out his new camera on fenced in dogs barking at him and the buses going by. He read this book front to back in two days and took from it a bit more of an understanding in capturing mood, speed and creative portraits in different ways. I read this book myself and found it easy to understand the explanations on different cameras, film speed and black and white photos. Although not really a learning tool, I do feel this is a helpful guide to open up the minds of children interested in taking pictures. And the fact it's not a large text book, and is written on an age appropiate level makes it a good start for children who may not think they can learn all there is to learn about photography and may motivate them to capture their own memories and feelings in a creative way. And maybe they'll give the Nintendo a break.

Arthur Elgort Steals Idea From Writer.......2006-06-20
I sent Arthur Elgort and several other well-known fashion photopraghers a fax asking them to contribute to a book that I was writing.
The title of my chapter "Photographing Your Child." Fashion Photographers share their favorite children's photos and offer parents tips on taking great pictures.
Several months later, Arthur Elgort announced to "Vogue Magazine" that one night while he was sleeping he came up with the idea?
I immediately sent Elgort the original fax stating that I had sent him along with several other industry photographers the above Chapter information and how dare he take credit for my ideas. But, he chose not to respond and went forward with his new book?
I am happy to see that just recently writers are taking action against people like Arthur Elgort who obviously take credit for other people's creative ideas!
You should be ashamed of yourselve knowing that others in the industry know that you stole my ideas as well!
Learning by Doing.......2002-08-26
This is a fantastic book that I return to again and again for inspiration. Granted, there is not a lot of text, not a lot of "how to". But, as with anything one tries to do at a high level, photography is mostly art and not science. You can read lots of books with f-stop measurements, shutter speeds, etc., but those won't teach you nearly as well as looking at good pictures, and taking lots of pictures. Elgort's text provides the basics, all one really needs. By studying this book, you get the same lessons as Kelsh's book: Get Close, Study the Light, and Use Lots of Film. You don't get to be a great music composer by reading books on composition, you get better by listening to music and studying scores. Most "how to" photo books are like reading books on bicycle riding -- this book has you actually get on a bicycle and ride. In addition, Camera Ready is a beautiful coffee table book -- the subtitle "How to Shoot Your Kids" also gets a lot of smiles.
By the other reviews, I can see that this may not be a book for everyone: not for techie photographers, not for absolute beginners, etc. But with a little knowledge, this book can really help you with your most important pieces of photographic equipment: your mind and your eye.
A reader from California.......2000-08-02
I love photographing children and found this book to be very inspiring. I purchase this book as a gift for every friend or family member who has a baby, and I always receive rave reviews. This book is about inspiration and getting your children to a place where they are comfortable and familiar with having the camera around. This way you will have candid photographs of your children where they are natural and unaffected - by capturing their true essence. ... By following Arthur Elgort's simple advice, my photographs of children have improved tremendously.
I do not recommend this book.......2000-06-08
I was looking for specific advice about "how to shoot" my kid (photographically). I did not get it. This book REALLY IS just a photo album of the author's own kids. While some people may be able to infer how to achieve great photos of their kids by looking at Mr. Elgort's photos, I needed more "how to" instruction. There is very little text in this book at all and I felt the title was misleading. If you are looking for excellent instruction on how to photograph your children (babies in particular) buy HOW TO PHOTOGRAPH YOUR BABY by Nick Kelsh, a far superior book which I bought after trashing this one.
Great style - little information.......2000-03-06
As other reviewers have said, this is a photo album of the author's kids. The photos are wonderful and enjoyable. The style is relaxed, somewhat candid and mostly black and white. I bought the book to learn more about his technique. However, he does not share much information on how to achieve these wonderful photos. So, I plan on using the book and his photo style as inspiration and the trial and error method to achieve similar photos . Even though it falls short in technical information, I still enjoyed the book and I feel it will be benificial in improving my own photography.
Book Description
Using stunning yet unintimidating photographs and simple techniques, this photography guide teaches parents or grandparents how to take better photographs of their children. The images are the main teaching tools, so the reader is not bogged down by jargon. The supporting text is strong but simple, as are the instruction-filled captions. Every photograph profiled in the book was taken with a basic digital or 35mm camera in natural or simple lighting, so parents do not need to worry about using complicated lighting gear or techniques. Parents will learn to take strong photographs that capture the personality and spirit that only their children have.

Great book for beginners.......2007-05-30
This is a great book for beginners or people who always seem to wonder "Why do everyone else's pictures always look so much better than mine?" The best thing about it is that it's short on text and long on visual examples. For visual learners, it's a dream.
Wonderful manual full of simple tips for great photos of children!.......2007-02-17
This is a great book on photographing children, covering basic rules of good photography (eg, the rule of thirds) as well as more specific ideas particularly applicable to children. I especially liked that this book is full of photographic examples: every page has at least 2-3 photos displaying various options, which helps the reader to immediately get a clear visual sense of what makes for a "good" picture of children. The author begins by focusing on general principles such as composition and light, then moves on to address more specific topics, including photographing infants, setting the stage, and taking candid shots. He also focuses on picture-taking for special occasions, from sporting events (including how to position for each sport) to birthday parties to holidays. Finally, there is a small but helpful section on scrapbooking. Although this book covers children of all ages, it would make a great baby shower gift (which is why I bought it). Overall, this is an excellent picture-taking guide which I think would serve to help virtually anyone improve their pictures of not just children but people in general; highly recommended!
Provides clear and simple rules to improve your photos.......2006-10-10
I was skeptical about whether I would learn anything new about taking pictures of my kids, but this book is great! Clear and concise rules are provided in an easy-to-read layout, with most lessons spelled out in a 2-page spread and accompanied by examples of both what not to do and what to do.
The author covers rules of composition and light, as well as techniques about where to place yourself to get the best shots. There are also sections specific to shooting sports, birthday parties, and holidays.
Very useful!
Surprisingly Helpful Book.......2005-10-13
A friend loaned this book to me with the recommendation "There are some decent tips in here." I initially put the book away, thinking that my two high school photography classes had been enough instruction for something as simple as taking snapshots of my daughter. Turns out I was wrong.
The book is filled with practical advice. And more importantly, each tip is illustrated with side-by-side photos to show what happens if you do it right, and what happens if you don't. With each chapter you learn a new tip or technique, understand the "why" behind it because you see it in the many photo comparisons, and you begin to internalize it. I imagine with time and a little practice, the tips will become second nature for me, and then I'll loan the book to someone else.
One last note. This isn't a book for photography buffs with big gear bags. All the photos were taken with a basic 35mm camera and no special lenses, and I found the content highly relevant for my own photography, which is 95% shot from an everyday Olympus digital camera.
Glad I got this book.......2004-08-11
I was skeptical, but am glad I bought this book. It's easy to understand, and changed the way I see before I shoot. My pictures are actually worth looking at now. Good one.

Easy and interesting.......2001-11-09
This is a really great book. It is easy and interesting to read and covers alot. The book is arranged really well and answers a lot of questions you may have. The book contains lots of pictures to expand on the text. It is one of the best books on child modeling I have read. Another is the Wilhelmina's world of child modeling book.
Extremely informative........1999-08-31
This book offers a wide variety of information which would be helpful for anyone considering entering the modeling of acting business with their child. It brought up some very good points that I had not previously considered. This book provides a good foundation of knowledge about the modeling/acting business..
Good basic information........1998-09-19
This book helped me get started in researching my daughter's potential for modeling. It provides a good overview of the basics, but it also made me want to find another book with more details.

Book Description
Preserved people can tell us things that skeletons can't-hairstyles and tattoos can tell us what people looked like, full stomachs can tell us what thev ate, and autopsies can reveal what diseases they suffered.
With sections on Egyptian mummies, bog bodies, Einstein's brain, and the Ice Man, The Encyclopedia of Preserved People provides a fascinating look at those men, women, and children whose bodies have been preserved until the present day. It proves that history is not about dull dates, but about people who laughed, cried, ate, and worked, just like us-yet who were also incredibly different. It includes an index and a bibliography and is illustrated by over 30 full-color photographs.

extremely impressive and absorbing.......2006-07-30
Believe you me, I have more than my fair share of Egyptology works among my considerable collection of historical, archaeological, and anthropological opera. I must say that Strudwick's work impressed me quite deeply, mostly because of its format. Specifically, the material is so beautifully presented that one can open the book to just about any of the several hundred two-to-four-page spreads and be swept off one's feet into the world of ancient Egypt. Indeed, details are so minute, so absorbing, so human that one is all but corporeally transported to ancient Egypt. From artifacts to panoplies of gods to the (necessarily brief) explanation of the development cycle from hieroglyphics to demotic to Coptic, one could hardly ask for a more excellent presentation of a veritable treasure trove of facts, stories, and artworks from the world of the Pharaohs.

Worth Your Time & Attention.......2001-06-07
Dr. Brier's book Encyclopedia of mummies is, (despite bad reader reviews) a very thought provoking & fascinating book. His book tells us about everything on mummies, from Egyptian to Peruvian, to bog mummies, to Evita & Popes! Yes, it's true, the information is scarce, but there are hundreds of entries in here! I think Brier wanted this to be used similiar as to how you would use a dictionary. Just look up a word, & there it is. I think the fact that he wrote about "fluff & stuff" the candy, movies, books..may be to show us how silly we have been in our knowledge & consideratiion of mummies, they were once people after all. It comes to show that though we've changed our mummy image in popular culture, they basically recieve the same treatment they always have. Brier's entries prove this. The entries are, brief, but he presents the facts vividly enough with his usual flair, that you get a good idea of the subject. I would say that this is a book anyone interested in mummies should have. At the very least for quick reference purposes. An excellent companion to this book, was Discovery Channel's Unwrapped: The Mysterious World of Mummies. You can still see what it was about at discovery.com. I think Brier did an excellent job for the way he choose to present the information & I guarantee his writing methods aren't as 'stiff' as the other guys & you'll learn things you never imagined possible.
IT's only an encyclopedia you guys!.......2001-05-10
Wow, this book is really getting some bad reviews! Well, it seems like people expect it to be some in-depth resource - when in fact it is written in a form of an encyclopedia, as can be deduced from the title. Which means it gives a little bit of info about many things. And I think as an encyclopedia it does an excellent job.
A nice beginners source for the young ones.......2001-01-10
Well this is an encyclopedia of mummies after all and it covers a very broad range of mummie nostagalia from really non-sensical 'stuff' to really interesting facts. The pictures are of an excellent quality and really liven up this somewhat "dead" book...sorry couldn't help it.
The book is entertaining yet it falls short of being an "academic" resource. Don't get me wrong the information is quite good and the bibliography is quite extent but it seems that this encyclopedia is geared more towards a younger audience and would be an excellent stepping stone for a child or teenager who is interested in mummies, both recent and ancient. Another interesting section of the book is the appendix that lists where the mummies are displayed at and how many each collection has and from what time period. So if you ever go on a trip to one of the areas that house the museums where the mummies are it would be an interesting side trip for the family.
I would recommend this encyclopedia for any one who is interested in all things mummies but for the serious student there are other and better works to be found on the subject.
Not a bad encyclopedia........2000-07-16
From natural to artifical mummies, from mummies in the movies to those used in advertisements. You get it all in this book. Some complain about to much fluff in the book, but what do you expect from an encyclopedia.
The author was obviously mummified prior to writing this.......2000-03-05
For some obscure reason this book seems to focus more on mummy candy, mummy clothing, mummy perfume, mummy movies, mummy urban legends, and modern mummy fanatics rather than Predynastic Egyptian mummies, techniques of mummification, use of herbs and scented plants in mummies, Egyptian afterlife beliefs, Hindu, Inca, Messopotamian, prehistoric and other mummies, and countless other much more appropriate topics. This book has no insight whatsoever, it gives no maps or detailed information, the tone is pitiable, and, overall, this is a disaster. Encyclopedia of Mumies gets two stars from me only because it gives halfway-decent data on near-modern mummies.
Book Description
The “Gale Encyclopedia of Science” is written at a level somewhere between the introductory sources and the highly technical texts currently available. This six-volume set covers all major areas of science and engineering, as well as mathematics and the medical and health sciences, while providing a comprehensive overview of current scientific knowledge and technology. Alphabetically arranged entries provide a user-friendly format that makes the broad scope of information easy to access and decipher. Entries typically describe scientific concepts, provide overviews of scientific areas and, in some cases, define terms.
