good overview with complex characters.......2003-12-23
Overall, ON THE ROAD TO TARA gives dozens of wonderful anecdotes about the making of the epic film GONE WITH THE WIND, using Selznick as the focal point. The real life characters seem much larger than life here, and not the one's you'd expect. Issues of that time resonate in our own, including racism, Hollywood's role in shaping national morality, ageism, drug addiction, homophobia and meglomania.
Unfortunately, David Selznick is a very unsympathetic character. He's troubled, undisciplined, unwittingly cruel, irrational-and those are his endearing qualities! Though the author takes pains to show that Selznick was always apologetic after he flew off the handle, there is no soft side to warm this character up a bit. He is reminiscent of Charles Foster Kane but with no love interest but a wife who stays completely out of sight.
Vivien Leigh is just as complex, living a life filled with scandals-she was living out of wedlock with Laurence Olivier, which had to be kept a complete secret from press and public. She was British, and many thought it a crime that a non-Southerner, let alone a non-American play Scarlett. But her determination closely mirrors Scarlett O'Hara's in single-mindedly getting just what she wanted. Over all, a good overview of the making of a classic.
For GWTN Collectors Only.......2002-12-30
This book is seriously lacking. The pictures are not great and the text is uninteresting. There is nothing here that you haven't seen before.
Tops--or bottoms--"The Tara Treasury".......2000-02-12
Surprisingly, considering Harmetz's previous books, this volume is, without a doubt, the WORST book ever written on "Gone With the Wind." The text is riddled with mistakes, and many of the illustrations are mislabeled. Thank goodness, the book apparently has been a huge failure in the sales department, so there should be NO trade paperback edition. May it soon be "gone with the wind" ...
Burning The "Bridges"..........2000-01-02
Finally, a new and interesting book on the film Gone With The Wind! For years a certain Gone With The Wind "Authority" has published book after book containing the same fuzzy and out-of-focus photographs...many mislabeled !
Furthermore, Aljean Harmetz provides the reader with FRESH & NEW information...and does not, as other's have done, plow the same old field of familiar"facts" regarding this film .
BRAVO to Ms. Harmetz for giving the readers and collectors something FRESH & NEW !

Behind the scenes of Gone With the Wind.......2003-06-10
This is a great book about the making of Gone With the Wind, one of the greatest films ever made. There are lots and lots of photos but they are in black and white, not color. The text is entertaining and full of lots of details about the stars, production team, writers and MGM executives. A must for any GWTW fan.

Gone with the Wind.......2006-03-16
I think that Gone with the Wind is a really good book. Everyone should read this book mainly because it is really passionate and exciting at the same time. I love this book because it is really unpredictable. One of my favorite parts is when Scarlet and Melenie and the others make it all the way back to Tara. A part that made me really sad is when Scarlet finds out that her mother is dead. I think that everyone should read this book because it is a really passionate and unpredictable book. That is why I think that everyone should read it.

There is just sooo much!.......2004-11-16
I recieved this book about a month ago and read it in one day. I just couldn't put it down. I LOVE behind the scenes stuff they (now) show on DVD and this book was an added bonus!
One thing I didn't realise when I bought it was the book was published in 1989. (Error on my part, not the books fault, of course, lol) This doesn't really change anything... except for when it talks about the book Scarlett, which was in the process of being written at the time.
After reading this book it did give me a newfound respect for the book "Scarlett" (which, it is a good work...on it's OWN, but no comparison to "Gone with the Wind" and I still believe the author was not true to the character of Scarlett.)
But after reading this book, I am no longer as "resentful" (for lack of a better word) towards that novel. I think the Mitchell estate did the right thing.
There were also so many interesting things...I had NO idea it took all that work and that they had THAT much trouble in making the movie.
All in all...A very good and interesting book well worth reading for any GWTW fan, be they a "Windy" or not.
THE BEST I HAVE EVER READ!!!!!!.......2002-12-30
This book is bursting with romance. I fell in love with every character. I would recomend this book to everybody!!!
Lots of Interesting Tidbits.......2002-06-15
I thought that I knew lots of GWTW trivia until I read this. I failed miserably at the quizzes. In other words, even if you're a Windy, you probably will learn something from this book.
One of the best sections addresses what the GWTW actors did with their careers, including the minor characters. One of the Tarleton twins, for instance, went on to play Superman.
Information on the costuming gave me a new respect for the efforts at authenticy. Unfortunately, this book leaves the reader with the impression that GWTW costumes are historically accurate. As someone who has researched 1860s clothing for living history, that's an unfortunate misconception. Other sources (not this book) explain that Technicolor considerations trumped accuracy.
Nonetheless, I learned lots of new tidbits about the movie and the book, making it well worth the price.

Scarlett: The Sequel to Margaret Mitchell's "Gone With the Wind"
ASIN: 067168387X |
Book Description
Celebrate the 50th Anniversary of an American Classic.
Published in the spring of 1936, Margaret Mitchell's Gone With the Wind was an immediate and overwhelming success; millions of copies were sold in its first year alone. By the time the film opened on December 15, 1939, the anticipation and excitement were so great that the city of Atlanta declared the day an official holiday. Since then, more than 300 million people have seen the film and every year hundreds of thousands of copies of the novel are sold in dozens of languages.
This lavishly illustrated book is the ultimate behind-the-scenes history of the novel, the film, and the phenomenon of Gone With the Wind. It includes wonderful anecdotes, original quotes from the stars and the directors souvenir programs from the original premiere, many rare never-before published photographs, and more, from the smell of the smoke and the heat of the flames during the filming of the "burning of Atlanta" sequence to the soft touch of the red dust at the location Tara; from the fangue on the faces of cast and crew after grueling months of shooting to the thrill of premiere night, you will experience the unfolding drama as if you were there.

Gone With The Wind.......2006-11-26
Gone with the wind is a novel packed with action, love, distress, hard times, and most of all, scarlet's strong sense of lofe. be it love of the land person, or thing scarlet is so emotional its almost unreal. it is an amazing book and i reccomend it for anyone with atleast a 9th grade reading lvl.
I think that the views expressed in this book about slavery and the civil war are more realistic than in any other book i've ever read. for instance, although uncle tom's cabin was another great book i believe that the viewpoint on slavery is too dramatic. i do not believe that all southern slave owners whipped their slaves.
i hope that reading this review has encouraged you to read this book. Gone With The Wind was deffinitely a book i can and will always remember, and i can't wait to read Scarlet, the sequel!
A Must Have Book for Gone With the Wind Fans.......2002-06-24
This book is packed with information and great photographs, both in color and black and white. The majority of the book deals with the filming an abundance of behind-the-scenes shots.
Also of particular interest is the post-production section dealing with the public's reaction to the movie and the section on the Premiere. This is a great book to add to your personal library.
Probably my favorite GWTW related book (so far anyway!).......2001-10-29
Gorgeous pictures. Wonderful history of the novel to movie story. All GWTW fans should have this.
Terrific!.......2001-05-30
This is an excellent book that chronicles the making of the legendary screen classic "Gone With the Wind". The book moves in chronological order from it's start as a novel all the way through the pre-production, production and post-production stages of what was to be one of the greatest films of all time, if not the greatest. The book is filled with numerous photos, some of them in color, many of them rare and all of them crisp and clear. There are close-ups of all of its stars (Vivien Leigh, Clark Gable, Olivia DeHavilland, Leslie Howard), the crew at work, movie posters and it's world premiere. This is a great book that will make an excellent addition to any library!
Gone With the Wind : The Definitive Illustrated History.......2000-12-15
First I was impressed by the quality of photos - excellent. I come from Poland where, for a long time of communism, the good quality was a rare luxury. I could see every single element of fabulous clothes. Good taste, an unattainable world of really rich people - different from those starving and hungry after war in "Gone With the Wind". A lot of pictures, too little stories and anecdotes, but this is an illustrated story, so I shouldn't complain. Vivien Leigh, Olivia de Havilland, Clarke Gable are warm and human as private persons. As actors they are shown as professionals.

As Roger Ebert observes in his smart introduction to the collected memos of the legendary producer Selznick, this is no ordinary book. Buzzed on Benzedrine, Selznick dictated his every thought to secretaries from 1916-1965, 2,000 file boxes' worth of priceless, absolutely unique inside information. "What we're given is a seat in his office," Ebert says, "the Nixon tapes of Hollywood's golden age." It's a privilege to see Selznick tussle with Hitchcock (who evidently had a notion about a vaguely Psycho-like grandma in the first draft of Rebecca), Ingrid Bergman (to whom he dictated an amazing tantrum), and Tallulah Bankhead ("Would you care to brave the lioness' den?" he asks his secretary, suggesting that she contact Bankhead about a bit part after spurning her for the Scarlett part in Gone with the Wind). The gestation of Scarlett's flick is especially fascinating. At first, Selznick cautions director George Cukor about "not going overboard on size and expensive production scenes of the civil war," but with Selznick, things always tend to get bigger. To battle bigotry, he cuts the Ku Klux Klan from the film ("Of course we might have shown a couple of Catholic Klansmen, but it would be rather comic to have a Jewish Kleagle.") By the end, he's pulling out the stops--he urges the composer to "go mad with schmaltz in the last three reels." Selznick blows it sometimes: he nixes newcomers Gregory Peck and Burt Lancaster, and John Ford's Stagecoach, which created John Wayne. But by reading his memos, you can't fail to see what made him a true auteur.
All hail Martin Scorsese for editing the classic film-books series of which this is a part, Modern Library: The Movies. Even if he'd never directed, Scorsese would be God's gift to film history. --Tim Appelo
Book Description
"The most revealing, penetrating book on filmmaking I know of . . ."--King Vidor
David O. Selznick was a unique figure in the golden Hollywood studio era. He produced some of the greatest and most memorable American films ever made--notably, Rebecca, A Star Is Born, Anna Karenina, A Farewell to Arms, and, above all, Gone With the Wind. Selznick's
absolute power and artistic control are evidenced in his impassioned, eloquent, witty, and sometimes rageful memos to directors, writers, stars and studio executives, writings that have become almost as famous as his films. Newsweek wrote,"I can't imagine how a book on the American movie business could be more illuminating, more riveting or more fun to read than this collection of David Selznick's memos.
Customer Reviews:
This is the man.......2001-05-22
Fascinating and illuminating book about the way movie classics were made in the 30's and 40's. This man knew his job and we are lucky that in the making he wrote those long memos. The people they were sent to found them annoying. We movie fans find them fascinating.
Engrossing and informative and never dull.......2000-10-26
I was a bit leery of a book of just memoes but ... This is truly an extraordinary book, full of insights into every aspect of film making. The most interesting parts are about scripts and script construction. That was what Selznick had a genius for, and that comes through clearly. Some of his faults come through too. There are a number of memoes about his life and emotions so you get a picture a man not just an executive.
For anyone who likes old movies a must.
Selznick Redux.......2000-04-16
It's a genuine pleasure to see this 1972 volume back in print again. Practically the entire history of classic Hollywood can be seen within the pages of this fascinating series of memos, a veritable stream of behind the scenes trivia and the most impressive book of name-dropping ever seen in print. The cinematic genius of Selznick and Company is told as only it should be told...in the Master's own words.
Insightful look at a bygone era.......2000-03-29
David O. Selznick was behind some the films considered classics from that era. He was known for his memos that he sent to others in the industry and those working for him. The book is a fascinating look at the studio system at the time - and is also a reminder that people at one time actually communicated in writing - no cell phones, no email. This book is a must-read for those interested at all in film lore - and it's a great read!
