Customer Reviews:
The woman behind the man.......2007-08-20
I really enjoyed this book as I read it at the time of the 30th anniversary of the marvelous album "Exodus." Rita Marley reveals a different side to the Bob Marley story, seperating myth from the man, fact from fiction and adding to the legend of his life with unknown tidbits. Her first person account deals with her life primarily as she was Bob Marley's wife. I was unaware of the hardships that they endured before "making it." Their early years were quite trying. Than later when they achieved a certain success it seems Mr. Marley needed the attention of many other women but Rita dutifully stood by her man. I enjoyed the book and her account, in Jamaican-style-English of Bob Marley's rise to International fame. If you like Bob Marley you need to read this book for a better understanding of the man and his music. Rita Marley is to be commended for her contribution to the Bob Marley legacy.
Rita had plenty 2 Cry About...........2006-09-28
I read this book this past summer and loved it - it was the first book i read about bob & i am glad i chose her book first....Rita went thru alot, i definitely see bob differently - i sense she did sugar coat the book at times, the book makes me respect Rita more and bob less. His woman had plenty of reasons to cry.
Great Book.......2006-07-10
No Woman No Cry: My Life with Bob Marley is an awesome testimony of a woman of strength and virtue. I am a huge Bob Marley fan and Rita Marley told her story with love, passion compassion and truth, concerning her relationship with Bob Marley. Through her story she makes you feel as if you want to comfort, applaude and cry with her all at the same time. She reveals the very core of her struggles with Bob, his fame, his affairs, the business, the family and his death, and her life after Bob. And she writes not as a bitter woman but a woman who knew her destiny and her role as the wife of Bob Marley. I LOVED IT!
STRONGER WOMAN THAN I CAN EVER BE.......2006-04-06
THIS BOOK WAS EXCELLENT! THE STRUGGLES THAT THEY HAVE BEEN THROUGH TOGETHER LETS YOU KNOW JUST HOW STRONG THEIR LOVE REALLY WAS. BEING A JAMAICAN WOMAN MYSELF, I KNOW HOW OUR JAMAICAN MEN CAN BE. BUT RITA HAD ALOT OF HEART STAYING WITH HIM ALL THESE YEARS EVEN THOUGH HE BLATANTLY FLAUNTED HIS WOMEN IN HER FACE. THE ONLY GOOD THING WAS HE MADE THEM PLAY THEIR POSITION BECAUSE NO ONE COULD TAKE HER PLACE. THIS WAS THE BEST AUTOBIOGRAPHY I HAVE EVER READ!
Wonderful tribute to a woman's love.......2006-03-01
This is a wonderful book. An initimate portrayal of Bob and Rita Marley's life from poverty to worldwide reknown. Its insights into how Rita dealt with marital infidelity and frequent absences from Bob Marley are also very interesting. Rita was one strong woman! Highly recommended whether you are a reggae fan or not

Book Description
This title was among the winners of the 2006 Skipping Stones Honor Awards for Multicultural & International Awareness Books. Keeping Heart on Pine Ridge is an intimate look at contemporary life with the Lakota people on Pine Ridge Indian Rerservation, near the Black Hills in South Dakota. Insightful stories of compassion, despair, humor, and spiritual growth are drawn from two years of daily life in a strong and tormented community. Firsthand accounts of sundances, commodity foods, sweat lodges, drunken driving, and the Sacred provide the fabric through which Glover weaves his incisive wit and wisdom on the social and political forces that have challenged his people and made them stronger.

Keeping Heart On Pine Ridge:Family Ties, Warrior Culture, Commodity Foods, Rez Dogs and the Sacred.......2005-11-28
A group from our church has gone to Pine Ridge on Mission trips for the past three years and we have gotten to know quite a few people there. We always seem to have gained more than we have given during our week stay. This book tells it how it is for much of the population on the Pine Ridge Reservation. It is a very helpful book for the leaders of our Mission to share with others that are joining us. We love the people there. They focus on what really matters in life and brings us back to where we all need to live. Most of us are so far removed from nature, family, giving our all to each other. This book shows us how and points out how far removed we are. It really brings questions to the way that I am living my life. It points out just how differently I need to live to become apart of life as Jesus would want me to live it.
Thank you, Vic Glover. And thank you to our Native brothers and sisters.
Keeping Heart.......2005-02-01
This is a beautiful collection of short stories and is a real life account of living on in Indian reservation in todays modern times.
Vic Glover has an amazing talent and style of writing that 'just takes you right there'.
With much humour and sadness, Vic takes you on a journey, that whets the appetite, always leaving you wanting to read more.
This is a great read, I highly recommend it.
Telling it like it is.......2004-12-23
A moving glimpse into the everyday lives of the people that live on Pine Ridge. The blending of Lakota spirituality into the challenges of life in an impoverished society is outstanding!
Keeping Heart on Pine Ridge.......2004-12-12
A must read for anyone interested in what life on a western Rez is really about. BroVic captures the humor and pathos of daily life in a marvelously clear, straightforward way that simutaneously makes you wish you were there to share in it and glad that you're not.
Real Life Moments.......2004-12-11
I lived on a rez for 7 years, but I could never convey to others the texture of living there. Vic Glover can. This is a beautiful bouquet of real life vignettes, interwoven and told with an honest voice. Vic writes with nothing to hide, and that makes these stories so rich and visceral.
And it's damn cheap, like me. Perfect for Christmas presents. I'm gonna order some more copies.

Book Description
In this provocative and lively addition to his acclaimed writings on food, Warren Belasco takes a sweeping look at a little-explored yet timely topic: humanity's deep-rooted anxiety about the future of food. People have expressed their worries about the future of the food supply in myriad ways, and here Belasco explores a fascinating array of material ranging over two hundred years--from futuristic novels and films to world's fairs, Disney amusement parks, supermarket and restaurant architecture, organic farmers' markets, debates over genetic engineering, and more. Placing food issues in this deep historical context, he provides an innovative framework for understanding the future of food today--when new prophets warn us against complacency at the same time that new technologies offer promising solutions. But will our grandchildren's grandchildren enjoy the cornucopian bounty most of us take for granted? This first history of the future to put food at the center of the story provides an intriguing perspective on this question for anyone--from general readers to policy analysts, historians, and students of the future--who has wondered about the future of life's most basic requirement.

Book Description
In January 1927 Gus Comstock, a barbershop porter in the small Minnesota town of Fergus Falls, drank eighty cups of coffee in seven hours and fifteen minutes. The New York Times reported that near the end, amid a cheering crowd, the man's "gulps were labored, but a physician examining him found him in pretty good shape." The event was part of a marathon coffee-drinking spree set off two years earlier by news from the Commerce Department that coffee imports to the United States amounted to five hundred cups per year per person.
In Coffee, Society, and Power in Latin America, a distinguished international group of historians, anthropologists, and sociologists examine the production, processing, and marketing of this important commodity. Using coffee as a common denominator and focusing on landholding patterns, labor mobilization, class structure, political power, and political ideologies, the authors examine how Latin American countries of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries responded to the growing global demand for coffee.
This unique volume offers an integrated comparative study of class formation in the coffee zones of Latin America as they were incorporated into the world economy. It offers a new theoretical and methodological approach to comparative historical analysis and will serve as a critique and counter to those who stress the homogenizing tendencies of export agriculture. The book will be of interest not only to experts on coffee economies but also to students and scholars of Latin America, labor history, the economics ofdevelopment, and political economy.

Book Description
This volume tells the story of the people of South America and their history through a survey of their food culture. Food in the various countries differ in some ways because of cultural heritage, cooking techniques and geography, and here they are divided into four zones. The traditions of the primary groups--Indians, Europeans, and Africans--and their five centuries of mixing have still resulted in a stable food culture. The foods of the Indians pre-European contact still play an important role, along with other foods brought by successive immigrant groups. Europeans tried to establish their staples, wheat and wine, with little success. Many dishes, cooking methods, and food habits have survived with little modification since time immemorial. Students and other readers will learn much about the South American foodways in daily life today, with special attention paid to historical perspective and any rural and urban differences. For example, in all the major cultural groups, food preparation and cooking have always been women's work, with the exception of the meat roast (asado) by llaneros and gauchos. The rise of the cooking profession is discussed as well. A fascinating look at the daily meal schedule includes insight in to how the European conquerors imposed their eating habits and encouraged overeating, with the abundance found in the New World. Modern life is shown to affect where people eat, as buying meals, often from street vendors, during the workday has become more of a necessity. The survey includes a discussion of special occasions, including agricultural celebrations and Catholic feasts with indigenous elements. The overview is completed by a chapter on diet and health, covering such topics as botanical knowledge and science and an assessment of the nutritional value of the South American staples. Classic recipes from many of the countries and illustrations complement the narrative.

Book Description
Fascinating case studies, the majority of which are based on original field work, are presented in this second volume of the Food in History and Culture book series. Changing Food Habits examines the integral connection between food and ongoing ecological, economic, political, and social transformations. This text also provides research on dietary changes resulting from direct interventions by individuals and food programs.
Among the topics discussed, authors consider rural and urban modes of food consumption, dietary changes in different societal contexts, and food-based rituals. Cases presented in this volume suggest alternative readings of some established models of changing food habits, and contribute to a more comprehensive history of dietary transformations.
