Product Description

The Cure emerged in the post-punk 70s and defied all expectations to launch a marathon career marked by hit records and a string of sell-out arena shows. Never Enough traces The Cure s roots in middle-class Crawley, Sussex, and tracks their gradual rise, revealing how their first major album Pornography, almost ended the band well before their multi-platinum career began. Also documents Robert Smith s escape into the Siouxie & The Banshees camp during the 80s, and his experimentation with every drug. His reluctance to return to The Cure would eventually lead to them becoming superstars all across the globe. Never Enough is the first major, definitive biography of these post-punk survivors. In 2004, after numerous personnel changes, the band delivered their Greastest Hits album.

5 out of 5 stars For now, the QUINTESSENTIAL biography of the greatest band ever!! The Cure!!.......2006-10-16

A Great!! GREAT! Book. Starting from when Lol Tolhurst, Mike Dempsey, Simon Gallup, and Robert Smith joined and from other band join ins and outs. Talks an awful lot of Robert Smiths life as a child with his childhood friend and former bandmate Lol Tolhurst. Incredible book!! There is alot more tho that I would have wanted to see. THe author cut off at some songs when introducing an album to speed up the book. Alot of songs were left unspoken of which kinda ticked me off but other than that I LOVED it!!

For Cure fans alike this book is a MUST read!!! It's great! Don't hesitate, buy it!! You will love it!!

4 out of 5 stars a band-ography for Cure fans.......2006-09-22

It's nice to have a Cure biography and there is a heck of a lot of history to go through. In a way it's nice to have the book to make sense of all the different line-ups, who did what when, and how and why everyone came to be in the band.

Also the story in the beginning about Robert's brother taking him to the Isle of Wight festival is priceless. I won't say anymore here so that you'll go get the book!

It probably could be better but there's still enough good info in there for Cure fans that they won't be dissapointed. Another important thing to mention is that he interviewed Lol Tolhurst, and some other former members, so you get more than one perspective on the old days, which is cool.

    Book Description

Evolutionary robotics is a new technique for the automatic creation of autonomous robots. Inspired by the Darwinian principle of selective reproduction of the fittest, it views robots as autonomous artificial organisms that develop their own skills in close interaction with the environment and without human intervention. Drawing heavily on biology and ethology, it uses the tools of neural networks, genetic algorithms, dynamic systems, and biomorphic engineering. The resulting robots share with simple biological systems the characteristics of robustness, simplicity, small size, flexibility, and modularity.

In evolutionary robotics, an initial population of artificial chromosomes, each encoding the control system of a robot, is randomly created and put into the environment. Each robot is then free to act (move, look around, manipulate) according to its genetically specified controller while its performance on various tasks is automatically evaluated. The fittest robots then "reproduce" by swapping parts of their genetic material with small random mutations. The process is repeated until the "birth" of a robot that satisfies the performance criteria.

This book describes the basic concepts and methodologies of evolutionary robotics and the results achieved so far. An important feature is the clear presentation of a set of empirical experiments of increasing complexity. Software with a graphic interface, freely available on a Web page, will allow the reader to replicate and vary (in simulation and on real robots) most of the experiments.

5 out of 5 stars Really great stuff.......2002-04-29

This is a not too technical book, introducing you to evolutionary robotics. It covers a lot of interesting work done in the field over the last few years.

Using genetic algorithms it is possible to construct the brain of a robot ( Neural network ), and even (though harder) the hardware itself. The book gives an introduction to genetic algortihms & artificial neural networks, but the reader should still be somewhat familiar with these concepts before buying this book.

After reading this book, I did one of the experiments mentioned in the book. While I only did this with a freeware Kephara robot simulator, it was still fun.

      Book Description

The story of American Institutional Economics, from its foundations through its supremacy and subsequent decline is an extremely interesting one. Today with the return of Darwinian ideas to social sciences, changes in psychology and a revival of pragmatist philosophy, the intellectual conditions for a revival and reconstruction of American Institutionalism are arguably in place.

Few are better qualified to provide an authoritative, wide-ranging account of the rise, fall and potential rebirth of institutional economics than Geoffrey Hodgson. This well-written comprehensive study offers an interpretation of Veblen and American Institutionalism that places Darwinism at the center. In this and other aspects, it challenges prevailing accounts of the nature and potential of American Institutionalism.

The author's position as one of the most important economists in the world is becoming cemented by his marvelous history of important books. This book will only add to his status. The book will be read and re-read by academics and students economics, philosophy and sociology.

4 out of 5 stars Darwin and the Economy.......2005-03-23

Darwin's influence in the social sciences is growing, and at the same time, it is often resisted. Economics and economists though (taken as a whole) haven't had a lot to say about Darwin or Darwinism. Institutional Economics however (both new and original) tries to analyze how economies change over time. It seems only natural therefore that economists should consider Darwin and Darwin's ideas. Geoffrey Hodgson writes well about the potential importance of Darwin and Darwinism for economics and also how Darwin relates to a lot of other new developments in the social sciences. He approaches these issues primarily by examining the development of original Institutional Economics as formulated by Thorstein Veblen.

Professor Hodgson devotes several chapters to some complex issues in philosopy of science. I enjoyed his treatment of concepts such as emergentism, reductionism and realism. I especially enjoyed his treatment of structure-agency theory, a concept that has gotten a lot of attention in sociology, but little (unfortunately) in economics.

Based on this discussion he proceeds to analyze the growth and demise of Veblenian thought. He analyzes Darwin's influence on Veblen and the relationship of Veblenian theory to habit instinct theory and philosophical pragmatism. Hodgson argues that Veblenians have Darwinian roots-a point that some original Institutional Economists would argue against. Personally, I agree with Hodgson but his assertions are bound to provoke some controversy (which is a good thing).

Hodgson argues that we (economists) should rethink the discipline and re-form it. We should use Veblen and Darwin as foundations. Bud Hodgson is not a Sociobiologist and he is not trying to biologize economics. He views culture as emergent and recognizes you cannot translate biological evolutionary models wholesale to economic evolution.

I recently heard a well known biologist state that Charlie Darwin was "Wall Street's kind of guy." I cringed when I heard this since it conjured up images of Darwinism providing biological cover for capitalism. Hodgson is no idealogue of the right or the left and eschews imposing politics on science, including the social sciences. But he definitely shows how Darwinism has influenced one of the most politically progressive thinkers in American history-Thorstein Veblen.

His views are extremely relevant. New Institutional Economists often ignore Veblen's contributions. Economics as a whole still tries to ape physics and there is much confusion among economists about what science is and is not.

My only criticism of Hodgson's book is probably unfair. His goal is to analyze the Veblenian tradition. So it is no surprise that he does not discuss other traditions in the original Institutional Economics such as Karl Polanyi's. Nor does he discuss the various evolutionary schools in economic anthropology. A discussion of these issues would have been of some interest to me. But then agaain, as I said, this is probably an unfair criticism of Hodgson given his stated goal of the book: to reexamine Veblen's contribution to economic thought and the relationship of Veblen to Darwin.

Taken as a whole I thoroughly enjoyed the book. I recommend it to any economist willing to look beyond constrained optimization problems. It will also interest (or should interest) anthropologists, sociologists, political scientists, or anyone interested in philosophical foundations of the social sciences and the relationship of the social sciences to Darwin and Darwinism.

        Book Description

The overriding challenge for our species during the 21st century, many believe, will be that of evolving...or becoming extinct. Can the theory of evolution be expanded into a source of guidance that could help our species save itself? This collection brings together the thinking of scholars in a wide range of fields in social as well as natural science directed to this end. Moving beyond a critique of neo-Darwinism and sociobiology to explore the action implications of new theory--including Loye's reconstruction of the long ignored full vision of Charles Darwin and Laszlo's new QVI "fifth field" theory--essays explore the potential for the impact of self-organizing and self-regulating organism, of the biology of love, and the moral directional thrust of the human, as revealed in new discoveries in the fields of biology, psychology, brain research, sociology, economics, history, cultural evolution, and Darwinian re-evaluation. As such, the collection will be of interest to the educational community, the futurist community, and the more general "global foresight" community of concerned people.

          Book Description

Among the first uses of the computer was the development of programs to model perception, reasoning, learning, and evolution. Further developments resulted in computers and programs that exhibit aspects of intelligent behavior. The field of artificial intelligence is based on the premise that thought processes can be computationally modeled. Computational molecular biology brought a similar approach to the study of living systems. In both cases, hypotheses concerning the structure, function, and evolution of cognitive systems (natural as well as synthetic) take the form of computer programs that store, organize, manipulate, and use information.

Systems whose information processing structures are fully programmed are difficult to design for all but the simplest applications. Real-world environments call for systems that are able to modify their behavior by changing their information processing structures. Cognitive and information structures and processes, embodied in living systems, display many effective designs for biological intelligent agents. They are also a source of ideas for designing artificial intelligent agents. This book explores a central issue in artificial intelligence, cognitive science, and artificial life: how to design information structures and processes that create and adapt intelligent agents through evolution and learning.

The book is organized around four topics: the power of evolution to determine effective solutions to complex tasks, mechanisms to make evolutionary design scalable, the use of evolutionary search in conjunction with local learning algorithms, and the extension of evolutionary search in novel directions.

5 out of 5 stars A welcome addition to the literature on Intelligent Agents!.......2001-07-09

This book is an excellent reference book on evolutionary design of intelligent agents. It is a welcome addition to the growing body of literature on intelligent agents in general, and evolutionary approaches to synthesis of such agents in particular. One of the editors, Professor Honavar, as amply demonstrated by his other publications, has the rare ability to interrelate an amazing diversity of perspectives on Artificial Intelligence - from symbolic methods to neural networks and evolutionary apporaches, to uncover the shared principles and common foundations, and show how different paradigms can be brought together in synergistic ways to advance our ability to design and analyze intelligent systems. This book includes chapters written by some of the leading experts in the field. The first chapter provides an excellent introduction to the topic. The rest of the chapters provide a veritable feast of material ranging from design of sensory systems for robots to current research on design of software agents. Most of the chapters, although they describe some of the latest research in this area, are written in a style that is accessible to even an interested layperson. (My 15 year old daughter has enjoyed reading several chapters). The book should be especially useful as a reference to graduate students and researchers interested in artificial intelligence, machine learning, evolutionary computation, software agents, and computational evolutionary biology. It should also be useful as supplementary reading for a graduate or upper level undergraduate course on evolutionary computation, computational intelligence, or a related area or as a primary text for a seminar course. I recommend this book enthusiastically to everyone who is interested in the science and engineering of intelligent agents.
