Comprehensive- ea. ch. written by another person.......2007-06-01
This is comprehensive & each chapter was written by another expert, so you're bound to like something!
This can be a substitute to the book: "Everything You Need To Know About The Music Business" (Donald Passman)
Required text in class.......2007-05-13
This book was a required text in my Legal Problems of the Recording Industry class. I'm passionate about the music industry and can give a good debate, but am far from being a "legal mind." This text is great for those, like me, are not the best students in legal courses. This text breaks down real contracts/ agreements into easy to understand formats, section by section. If it wasn't for this text I wouldn't have made an A in the course. This book should be required reading for those in the music business as well as the musicians who will be facing these agreements. Plus, it's like my professor said 'remember, everything is negotiable - don't get screwed in your contract!'
Excellent.......2006-05-20
People think music business is all about creation and keeping the fans happy. Well it mostly is but a young artist can become stuck in all that legal stuff. For somebody who is new that can be very difficult and people could take advantage of this and try to cheat you so this book is about all the legal involved aspects of the music business. This book will offer you a detailed explanation of everything that concerns the people in the music business. After you read it you will know what to avoid and understand the issues as they are explained in an easy and franc manner.
I Keep Coming Back to This Book.......2004-09-04
I bought this book to fill out my music law library. Among the many books I have read are Passman's book "Everything You Need to Know About the Music Industry", "This Business of Music", and even Moses Avalon's more gritty book "Confessions of a Record Producer." While all of these books provide a great deal helpful information to understanding the music business, they are not really books that contain samples of what the actual contracts look like.
I bought The Musician's Business and Legal Guide a while back just because of the sample contracts. After sorting through the plentiful boilerplate contracts, I found that the information prefacing the agreements, i.e. that actual chapter contents, were even more invaluable than the contracts, which in themselves are pretty thorough. While I use my own hybrid, individualized contracts for the entertainment clients I represent through my law practice, I find myself constantly flipping back to this book as a reference since it covers such a wide range of information. In addition, the annotations in the sample contracts helps to illustrate the degrees of flexibility usually available to those contracts and what the terms actually mean.
This book is definitely not, as another reviewer stated, a book that you set out to read from cover to cover like Passman's book, but it works tremendously well as a reference to go to from time to time. My copy is highlighted and marked all up (and I'm one who normally writes in books).
The value of this book seriously exceeds its cost, and I would recommend it to anyone wanting to see how the concepts discussed in other music business books play out legally.
Handy reference guide, but not a sit down and read book.......2000-09-21
While this book is not on my required reading list on my web site, it is still a very handy reference guide to have on hand. This is not a book that I sat down and read all the way through, and I doubt that many other people would also. It is a HUGE book! This is a good book to have on hand when you need to look up something specific about the music business, and is much easier to read and use than "This Business Of Music". I still highly recommend the Donald Passman book as the first book that anyone looking for success in the music business should read, because it is a book that you can sit down and read (although it's also probably too big to read in one sitting).

Some musicians recoil at the thought that their band is a business. They believe that their music is their art, and don't want to sully it with commerce. That's all well and good--but wouldn't you give up your day job if you had the chance? Music Law can help you see your band as a business and turn it into a successful one. Musician and attorney Richard Stim has filled this useful book with helpful advice on solving disputes between band members, dealing with lawyers, managers, and record companies, and even the increasingly important matter of sample clearance. The advice is extremely thorough; for example, the chapter on band names includes information on researching your band's name to ensure it isn't already in use, what happens if two bands have the same name, and even how to register your band's name and logo. Because he advises getting all agreements in writing, Stim has provided dozens of sample agreement forms, both as blank hard copies in the book and as templates on the enclosed disk. Throughout the book, Stim provides important legal advice, all translated from stilted legalese into simple English. Both big and little names get into these difficulties sometimes; the book is peppered with cautionary tales of real musicians and their legal squabbles. Music Law can help you avoid such pitfalls and get your band's business running smoothly--so you might be able to quit that day job, after all. --C.B. Delaney

I recommend this book to anyone who wants their music and band to be their business and want to do it right!!

Running and taking care of the band's business could be a tough and demanding job! If you need help in managing your financials, contracts and especially legal stuff you may choose this book but music business isn't limited here! Apparently that is the aspect most of the people are focused on but that doesn't make a great record and great publicity and you need those before even thinking about managing your business. So if you really want to get to this point first you should read: "How To Make A Furtune In The Music Industry By Doing It Yourself: Your Personal Step-By-Step Guide To Having A Successful Career In The Music Business. ... To Sell Music, Book Shows And Get Noticed!" which teaches you everything from scratch not only parts of this amazing tough world.

If you need some guidance and reference within the music industry, this is the book you should be looking at. While keeping it simple, the author explains advanced legal issues that you might have had a hard time comprehending before. While this is a great reference, I suggest buying it as a pair with "101 Music Business Contracts" from Platinum Millennium.

Great.......2006-05-17
This book offers a revolutionary new look at the music industry. You'll find yourslef thinking about it in ways you never thought before! I suggest buying several copies of this book, because if you happen to set one on fire then you will be able to have one as backup. Trust me. Also read "The Music Business Bundle" from Platinum Millennium
Very good introduction to the subject........2003-04-19
I have many books and much experience with the subject matter. The problem with reading music industry books is a lot of times you read the chapter heading and think it will be common sense. Yet sometimes when you read something it has more of an impact, than when you think it. It is true of this book. There is a lot of information about law that you may think you know... but read it and it'll increase your knowledge and change your dogmas about the industry.

Excellent.......2006-05-21
Music business is an area where many dream to enter but also many see their dreams being crushed by outside forces. If you don't want to rise and fall quickly then you must read a guide into this world. This book is exactly that, a comprehensive guide into the closed door world of the music moguls. The book by Lee Wilson is one of the best on the market, with an easy structure and understandable terms for all those who want to engage in a music industry I recommend this book for all those who want an insider's look into the industry.
Great. Must-have!.......2006-05-16
This book is written in a way that anyone can understand. However, it covers advanced legal issues that are hard for anyone to understand. This book clears up any legal questions you might have had, and does it in a simple way. I recommend this book alongside "101 Music Business Contracts" from Platinum Millenium.
Essential reading for everyone in the music business........2000-04-04
This business and legal guide for songwriters and performers illustrates aspects of the law with examples from real life, providing appropriate and easy insights on everything from copyright law to choosing a manager and working with music lawyers. Any involved in music will find Making it in the Music Business an important, practical guide.
Making It in the Music Business.......2000-01-12
This book is a "must have" for every songwriter and artist out there. Even though it discusses legal issues, it's not full of legalese. I can hardly believe it's by an attorney! But rest assured, it's full of pertinent information written in an easy-to-read style. Don't sign any contract until you've read the entire book.

Buffalo Bill Cody's Wild West Show, begun in 1883, was a classic example of American show business: a cowboy-and-Indian spectacular starring 36 real Pawnees, a bunch of rodeo cowboys, 180 horses, and 18 buffalo. Cody treated his mostly eastern audiences to thrilling displays of shooting and riding, exotic Indian ceremonial dances, and blood-curdling reenactments of famous western battles. The show, a huge success, helped perpetuate the Wild West myth for the millions who saw it; in London, even Queen Victoria was impressed. Imagining the lives of Cody's Indians, one might predict a level of exploitation. Not so, Moses argues in this historical study. He provides first-hand narratives and fascinating photos that venture behind the curtain of Cody's show to suggest that as Cody's Indians traveled the world, they preserved their cultural heritage and had a good time doing it.
Book Description
Between the 1880s and the 1930s Show Indians depicted their warfare with whites and portrayed scenes from their culture in productions that traveled throughout the United States and Europe and drew huge audiences--well over a million people in 1885 alone.
The view that they were tipi-and-war-bonnet Indians exploited by entrepreneurs like Buffalo Bill was commonly held by reformers of the 1890s, and has been uncritically accepted ever since. This book, now available in paperback, is the first to examine the lives and experiences of Show Indians from their own point of view. Their dances, re-enactments of battles, and village encampments, the author demonstrates, helped preserve the Indians' cultural heritage through decades of forced assimilation.
This book also looks at Wild West shows as ventures in the entertainment business. By considering financing, scripting, recruitment, logistics, and public and creditor perceptions, L. G. Moses reveals the complexity of the enterprise and the numerous--and often contradictory--meanings the shows had for Indians, entrepreneurs, audiences, and government officials.
