The Man Who Invented Rock Hudson: The Pretty Boys and Dirty Deals of Henry Willson
ASIN: 0786415525 |
Book Description
In 1954, Mike Connolly, the gay gossip columnist for the Hollywood Reporter from 1951 to 1966, was described by Newsweek as "probably the most influential columnist inside the movie colony," the one writer "who gets the pick of trade items, the industry rumors, the policy and casting switches." He was indeed one of the most talented and influential members of the Hollywood press of his time, and his column, for those who could read between the lines, was a daily chronicle of gay goings-on. Fifty years later, his cumulative output is a virtually untapped lode of gay Hollywood history.
Mike Connolly's life and work are the focus of this book. It considers his formative years, his pre-World War II life at the University of Illinois and in Chicago, and the ways in which the homosexual community in Hollywood lived lives both secretive and open in the forties, fifties and sixties. It also examines the literary merit, power and newsworthiness of Connolly's "Rambling Reporter" column in the Hollywood Reporter and its significance as a chronicle of gay Hollywood life; the previously unexplored role of Connolly's column in the Hollywood blacklist and how his anti-Communist crusade was rooted in his earlier campaign to close down the brothels in his college town; and how his life informed his column and his column shaped his life.

Fascinating Reading for Everyone.......2003-09-24
This book tells the story of a flamboyant Hollywood character, who had the personal power to make or break careers of movie stars and other well-known people, long before the likes of the National Enquirer were ever thought of. The in-depth research for this book is so all-inclusive that even reading the bibliography can be a literary experience in its own right. Its thorough coverage of the Communist-chasing Senator Joseph McCarthy's dark period when so-called black-listed people could either not find work, or who had to work under assumed names, also gives historical credence to the book. Connolly's dogged anti-communist and anti-smut campaigns are described with full-blown candor.
The truth that the gifted journalist Mike Connolly was gay would come as a surprise to many readers such as myself, and it did not negate or overshadow his staunch Catholic upbringing, his campaigns against vice, or his writing. His being gay does not overwhelm either the book, or the reader.
You will not be able to put this book down, once you begin to read it. ...
A Gay Wink at Hollywood.......2003-07-14
I highly recommend Val Holley's latest study, of the late gossip columnist Mike Connolly, for anyone interested in reading between the lines of Hollywood history. Connolly, not all that likeable a character, managed to kow-tow to 1950's norms yet retain his individuality as a gay blade while becoming an important Tinsel-town presence in a time of conformity. Holley's bio of this unforgettable presence is a snappy read and gives the same insights into the man's character and motivations as his bios of James Dean do for that star.
Marvelously fun and fascinating.......2003-07-14
Marvelously fun and fascinating; this is the most delightful and interesting work I've read in some time. The scads of delectable skinny alone make this book almost impossible to put down. But there's more here than dish: the Mike Connolly who emerges from Holley's carefully researched biography is an intriguing, complex, powerful, hilarious, and superbly talented figure. The author could easily have sketched a simplistic image of Connolly as a repressed gay intellectual, swerving his rage into anti-Communist vitriol. Instead, Holley builds up a nuanced portait of his subject by painstakingly mining the written record and loads of interviews with the subject's friends, family, and colleagues. In Holley's view, Connolly's campaign against leftist influence in the movie industry sprang from numerous sources, including his Irish Catholicism, his identification with the culture of Hollywood, his patriotism, his status in the movie industry, and the childhood poverty that fueled Connolly's drive to assimilate into elite society. The author sees Connolly, not as a victim of sexual politics, but as a forerunner of today's influential Log Cabin Republicans. Likewise, Holley eschews commonplace notions of the "closet" in presenting an intricate image of Connolly's gayness and Connolly's success in holding the mirror up to gay Hollywood culture. The author vividly depicts Connolly's strikingly "open" way of life, and details the various "rules" by which Connolly and other gay film industry figures thrived within industry boundaries. All the while, the author spices the account with excerpts from Connolly's writing, by turns witty, playful, bitchy, scolding, vicious, and luxuriating in scandal. Moreover, Holley's story casts light - often new and always engaging - on numerous landmarks in Hollywood history, among them the "Confidential" magazine crisis and the threatened outing of Rock Hudson, the rivalry among the leading gossip writers, the Blacklist, and the movie industry's pivotal role in the 1960 Presidential campaign. Doubtless, Holley's book will appeal to an array of readers. Movie buffs will fasten on discoveries about their favorite stars and scandals (don't miss the inside scoops on Sinatra, JFK, and Peter Lawford); devotees of Hollywood camp will enjoy scores of delicious anecdotes and zingers (Tallulah Bankhead's 52nd birthday extravaganza surely takes the prize); film historians will find a well researched contribution to the social history of the later studio system; and gay studies scholars will uncover much of value: new tools for analyzing gay writing (such as Holley's "Rules of Gay Gossip" and Connolly's techniques for "openly" publishing gay scuttlebutt), a detailed picture of a pioneer of gay political conservatism, and a multifaceted and innovative depiction of queer Hollywood.

Book Description
“Useful men are some of the greatest blessings of a people. To have many such is more for a people’s happiness than almost anything, unless it be God’s own gracious, spiritual presence amongst them; they are precious gifts of heaven.”
Certainly one of the most useful men in evangelical history was the man who preached those words, pastor and theologian Jonathan Edwards. Commemorating his 300th birthday, general editors John Piper and Justin Taylor chose ten essays that highlight different aspects of Edwards’s life and legacy and show how his teachings are just as relevant today as they were three centuries ago.
Even within the church, many people know little more about Edwards than what is printed in American history textbooks—most often, excerpts from his best-known sermon, “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God.” They unjustly envision Edwards preaching only fire and brimstone to frightened listeners. But he knew and preached God’s heaven as much as Satan’s hell. He was a humble and joyful servant, striving to glorify God in his personal life and public ministry.
This book’s contributors investigate the character and teachings of the man who preached from a deep concern for the unsaved and a passionate desire for God. Studying the life and works of this dynamic Great Awakening figure will rouse slumbering Christians, prompting them to view the world through Edwards’s God-centered lens.

Gain a deeper understanding of and appreciation for Edwards.......2007-09-07
A great concept for a book - ten different people writing about various facets of the life and legacy of Jonathan Edwards. I especially enjoyed the chapter that dealt with Jonathan's amazing wife Sarah as well as the chapter that wrestled with accepting the theology of a slave owner (yes, Jonathan Edwards did own slaves). The chapters were all written by individuals with a great appreciation for Edwards, his theology, his life, work and legacy, so reading it was a real joy...but not an easy task. Part Three of the book examined some of the theological issues best attributed to the work of Edwards, a Puritan and strict Calvinist whose writings on original sin, the freedom of the will and religious affections are still read and discussed today. The authors of this book pointed out various challenges to Edwardian theology and did an excellent job of communicating what Edwards wrote and taught without overshadowing it with their own opinions.
The book is great for any reader wanting to know more about Jonathan Edwards and although it isn't an easy book to read, it is worth the effort for someone wanting to either gain an appreciation for this man and his legacy or deepen their understanding of what he taught and the role he played at such a critical time in American history. Students of early American history should have a familiarity with Jonathan Edwards and this is a great book to move from acquaintance to appreciation.
Historical Theology/Biography with Plenty of Application!.......2005-02-17
A God Entranced Vision of All Things is a wonderful look at the legacy and relevance of Jonathan Edwards life and teachings. John Piper and Justin Taylor have assembled (and also contributed to) a remarkable series of essays on the different aspects of Edwards' legacy. As the back of the book declares: "This book's contributors investigate the character and teachings of the man who preached from a deep concern for the unsaved and a passionate desire for God. Studying the life and works of this dynamic Great Awakening figure will rouse slumbering Christians, prompting them to view the world through Edward's God-centered lens."
The book is divided into three sections. Part I "The Life and Legacy of Jonathan Edwards" introduces the book, and contains 3 essays on our need to rediscover Edwards, a biography of Edwards, and information about his marriage and family (ably done by Mrs. Noel Piper). Part II "Lessons from Edward's Life and Thought" contains some excellent essays by J.I. Packer and Mark Dever. But, for sheer impact and power, the highlight of this section was the essay by Sherard Burns, "Trusting the Theology of a Slave Owner". Mr. Burns, an African-American pastor and theologian, thoroughly and fairly looks at the reality of Edwards' ownership of slaves, and the failure of Edwards to apply his theology to that area. Burns, without excusing Edwards, gives a remarkable analysis of this sin in Edwards. Here are the paragraphs that blew me away:
"As an African American, I know daily the pressures of being in a predominantly white society. Yet how I approach that society, the grid by which I engage that society, is more telling than anything else. God cannot be sovereign over some things and yet not in control of others. This is no justification for abuse or racism, for such perpetuators will have their day of reckoning. But the eradication of racism today, as would be the case with slavery then, will not come about through programs, but by means of a God-centered and God-entranced view of reality. We must not be governed by the political persuasion of today, but governed by the sovereign reign and rule of God. Whatever we may think of Edwards, one thing is for certain: He left the American church with the necessary theological truths to kill racism in our hearts and to be conquerors of it in the church.
In light of that, though we fight and should fight the residue of such hatred in our day, the reality is that the desire to be theologically orthodox means we must add to our shelves books by dead white men who owned slaves. All our heroes today have clay feet. Jonathan Edwards was not a perfect man, and he did not get everything right, nor did he stand for all the right things. Neither do any of us. His blind spots and sins are pointers to our own blind spots and sins. To ask for grace and mercy on our own sins is, by logical implication, to be ready and willing to extend it to Edwards." (p. 170-171)."
Wow! 'Nuff said!
Part 3 "Expositions of Edwards's Major Theological Works" is also very helpful in understanding some of Edwards more(admittedly) difficult works. The book concludes with an Appendix by (of course) Piper, who writes an "Edwardsean Sermon" in honor of Edwards, and a helpful guide by Justin Taylor on "Reading Jonathan Edwards: Objections and Recommendations".
All in all, I highly recommend this work to anyone interested in gaining a more God-centered, God-entranced view of all things.
great book - edwards continues to inspire!.......2004-09-04
This really is a great look at a number of characteristics of Jonathan Edward's life and ministry. A pretty quick read, but rich in depth, the book unashamedly argues for exactly what it says: a "God-entranced vision of all things". Piper hits the ball out of the park in the chapters he contributes (did you expect any less?), and the chapters by J.I. Packer and Mark Dever are also particularly good. Check it out today!

Young fans of Thomas the Tank Engine love to immerse themselves in Thomas' magical world. The railway has its own unique cast of characters and its own toothsome vocabulary. Thomas' Railway Word Book.......2005-04-21
This Thomas Word Book isn't written as a story, but rather as snapshots of life on the Island of Sodor. Featuring the trains, landscapes, and workings on the Island, several words are highlighted in bold, and those words (and others) point to different elements in the pictures-helping the child to sight-read words. For example, one picture shows Thomas and his driver crossing the viaduct. It says "Thomas crosses the viaduct over the river. His drive waves to the people in the house." Viaduct, river, driver, and house are highlighted, but the additional words pointing to pictures include windmill, chimney, smoke, and river.
While this book is geared to beginning readers, some children may find the train lingo difficult to pronounce, understand, or remember: coupling hook, coupling chain, wheel arch and wooden panel are but a few of these words. However, simpler words are highlighted throughout the book: sun, moon, stars, boat, dock, helicopter, bird, tree, passenger, clock, ticket, bus, cow, and many more.
Another short and inexpensive paperback........2002-05-11
THOMAS'S RAILWAY WORD BOOK is another in the seemingly endless parade of Thomas paperbacks, but I'm not complaining! The fact is, they're inexpensive and make a wonderful collection that encourages your Thomas fan to read. This one has vivid cartoon-like illustrations in primary colors with lots going on in the background to talk about. But there is NO story -- zip. The words are connected with what they represent, with arrows (coach, suitcase). The words are used in sentences, but make no plot. Still, my Thomas fans like me to read it over and over anyway, because I ask them "Where's the fireman?" or point to the train #5 and ask "Which one is this?" or "What's the helicopter's name?" I also make up mini-stories that use the words, and even though they're different every time, the kids will say "Read it again!" Or I ask them to tell me what's going on in the picture. That's a great mental exercise.

The media elite is a waste of taxpayer resources.......2006-04-27
Ever wonder why the rightwing fascists and fake liberals in both parties get away with destroying America? It's the media, stupid ! Yes, some rightwing lunatics will cry "Liberal media" while others will cry "conservative/corporate media" but folks, the media is nothing more than a puppet for anti-America government that exists in Washington D.C. . The book does take a strong swipe at the ever corrupt and dishonest media but the reader might still feel powerless as there are no truly working solutions except to quit watching the TV set. Then again, not watching the telly might give the American people more time to get to work and take back their country. Read this book and fight back !
one the list for worst assigned reading for a class ever.......2002-05-20
Personally, this book may be on the extreme side. Some of these suggestions might be nice, but many of them are unpractical. The media gives people what they want essentially, in order to make a change in it, it does not need to become an issue in political debate. It needs to become an issue in the hearts of people. People need to be educated enough to find for themselves what is the truth. If the people seek the truth, the media that provides it will be the most successful. Its a simple business, supply and demand.
compelling analysis.......2002-03-10
This indepth analysis should put an end to the myth of liberal bias in the media. As the Left has been saying for years, the media is only as liberal as the conservative corporations that own them. We seem to be tumbling towards a world in which everything is owned by a relatively few number of conjoined companies whose activities are reported on by a handful of aqenda-driven media giants all bent on diseminating a particular view of predigested news aimed at the lowest common denominator. There has to be another way although, like a previous reviewer, I'm not sure all the solutions in this book will work. I would also like to point out that 90% of National Public Radio's funding comes from donations made by listeners and from corporate underwriting. Only 10% of the NPR budget comes from the federal and state governments and all of that is in the form of grants used for specific programs (science, history, music, literature, etc).
Socialism Is Not the Cure.......2001-03-05
I have just finished this book for an Electronics Media class I am taking at USF.
Although I agree with most of the complaints that the authors expound about the problems with global corporations and the current state of the media today, I do not see their Socialist fixes as any kind of real solution. In fact, in many instances, they are just power grabs by the Left to get you to pay for their programs (ie National Public Radio and Public Television, which are dominated by the Left).
I agree with the concept of microradio stations to help spread media access around, but not their demand for government subsidies to help the "less fortunate" pay for their stations. They are not that expensive to buy and maintain.
I believe a more Libertarian approach to open media access would be more productive than the authors brand of Socialist "fixes"... which in the end would probably just lead to abuses by the Left.
But it is a good read from the point-of-view of defining all that is wrong with the current state of the media today and why it is out of control.
Brief, but disconcerting, portrayal of the media.......2000-11-02
While all industries have undergone tremendous consolidations in the past decade, none of them have the impact on our culture and democracy as do the media giants. The delivery of targeted viewers and users to advertisers is the goal of the media giants, not the creation of an informed citizenry. In fact, the author demonstrates that considerable censorship is exercized to prevent views that question the corporate order as well as their own restricted information flows from reaching the public.
The author emphasizes that the corporate media system will have to be addressed before democracy stands a chance. But a real quandry exists. Usually an active citizenry requires good information to become energized - the kind that is needed from the very media in need of drastic reform. It is a most unpromising picture.

Book Description
Editor Anthony Dunbar has assembled essays from 12 leading Southern historians, activists, civil rights attorneys, law professors, and theologians to discuss militarism, religion, the environment, voting rights, the Patriot Act, the economy, prisons and crime, and other subjects. The writers share the beliefs that the current policies of our national administration sacrifice the interests of the poor and the people who work for a living to the interests of a privileged elite, that the power of money and the military must be tethered, that the natural environment must be sheltered, and that racial justice matters. A common sentiment is dismay at the deepening chasm that now divides America-and specifically the South-into hostile armies whose leaders are fast losing whatever motivation they ever had to pursue compromise and cooperation, and the common good. The essayists are Leslie Dunbar, Paul Gaston, John Egerton, Janisse Ray, Dan Pollitt, Connie Curry, Laughlin McDonald, Sheldon Hackney, Susan Wiltshire, Gene Nichol, Dan Carter, and Charles Bussey. Foreword by Jimmy Carter

Valuable Contribution But As Cynical As Ever!.......2005-05-07
It is important to distinguish between Democrats and liberals when describing the slant of this work, as the latter retain their dignity, even amidst the crushing economic conservatism and hypocritical religious fundamentalism of the Bush regime. In this respect, then, as liberals, the authors of Where We Stand are to be applauded, admired, and rejoiced for having the courage to cry out against the Republican Bull in the world's fragile china-shop. But just as the old philosophical dilemma asks if a falling tree in an empty wood is heard, one wonders if the (mostly) reasonable objections to current American policy raised by these twelve essayists are capable of reaching the ears of those who should hear them.
Cynicism is apparent in each of the twelve works contained within Where We Stand, albeit in different degrees. But this should not be considered a criticism of the work, only an acknowledgment of how far things have swung to the Right. Like a cornered animal, liberals have become desperate; and sometimes, the first sacrifice made to desperation is rationality (just as Conservatives behaved during the Clinton years). Some of the arguments made in Where We Stand are self-defeating, as they are guilty of the same divisive mud-slinging that liberals so often accuse of Republicans. The best example of this is the very first selection by Dan Carter. I am on the fence concerning the current American policy of preemptive war, leaning precariously toward a position against it. That being said, Carter's essay antagonized my fair-minded sensibilities. I was amazed when I came to the end of this lengthy essay, replete with numerous statistics dubiously connected to cynical conclusions, and found that not one single attribution existed as to where Carter got his information - no foot-notes, no endnotes, nothing. This, for me, destroys Carter's credibility completely and thoroughly. He becomes, then, just a Left-wing version of Rush Limbaugh, a butcher of context and meaning that wraps every issue in a web of intermingled facts, lies, and false conclusions.
There is much to remark upon after one reads Where We Stand, many ideas and connections that (besides Carter) offer much to one's opinion concerning current American policy. I would like to touch on a few of these, briefly. Susan Wiltshire's essay concerning the difficulty in reconciling religion with modern issues was very insightful, and light on the cynicism. Gene Nichol makes an impassioned plea for us to fight for justice for all, not just the powerful and privileged. I was turned-off by Leslie Dunbar's assumption that support for our troops equals support for our President. This is very simplistic and cynical. I was inspired by Janisse Ray's refusal to shop at Wal-mart, and her alternative life-style that puts rebellion in the realm that it should be: in action and not words. Daniel Pollitt opened my eyes to the constitutional pitfalls inherent in the debate of individual freedom versus security. I had no idea that the Administration had gone so far. I particularly liked the quote attributed to Ben Franklin: "`They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.'" Charles Bussey's thoughtful use of Senator Fulbright's book The Arrogance of Power has so affected me that I have added the work to my reading-list. John Egerton's chronology of the Civil Rights Movement is valuable in itself, and his claim that most Americans have had it with both Democrats and Republicans jives with my own opinion concerning these self-serving and out-of-touch institutions.
All in all, Where We Stand is a desperate counter to the ideas that are currently shaping this country. And in the spirit of free debate and the need most of have of hearing both sides of important issues, it becomes very valuable.
A Must Read.......2004-09-21
All of the essays in "Where We Stand" were informative and thought provoking. Each essay explores a different topic but all explore Southerners' cultural and religious belief systems in an historical account of how these affect the political system and outcome of political elections as well as public policy in general. All Americans should read this as a wake-up call. I literally could not put the book down for each essay had something very important to convey. The book provides various insights on the need and urgency to look critically at ourselves politically. At the end of the book I was very proud to be a southerner and to know such powerful voices were speaking out.
The More Things Change, . . . the more they stay the same........2004-07-15
The twelve voices of dissent in WHERE WE STAND demand, in heartfelt prose, for an end to the domination of America by ideologically right-wing Republicans, a majority of whom are southerners, all of whom are in bed with the military-industrial-complex. WHERE WE STAND traces the rise of the modern Republican South from the entry into national politics of racist southern politician George C. Wallace, to the subtly racist "Southern Strategy" of Richard Nixon, through Ronald Reagan, who sanitized Wallace's bigotry by creating race-loaded "buzz words" that enabled Americans to be "comfortable with their prejudices." As in the antebellum period, as during Reconstruction, as in the era of segregation, the South by the 1980s was again united on the dominant theme of the South's existence-race-this time within the Republican Party.
In their historic fight to preserve the "southern way of life," southerners had always maintained that the struggle was NOT about money. But in the 1980s, when southern ideas were becoming dominant nationally, southerners changed; money became half to goal. Thus, in the last three decades of the twentieth century, southern right-wing Republican politicians and their northern Republican allies have arrogantly united with George W. Bush upon economic policies that benefit only the wealthy, and an unjustified imperialist war which will benefit the military-industrial-complex at the expense of people at the bottom of society.

Customer Reviews:
Very useful.......2006-12-24
I've been reading and studying about the Korean War recently. I had bought this encyclopedia some months ago in anticipation of this. While I have read only a few entries in the encyclopedia, the ones I have read have all been very informative with good depth. As might be expected given the length of the book, there is a wide range of topics covered.
As to format, there is a very useful listing of all the topic entries at the front of the book, along with a plethora of plain but clear maps. I might mention though, that the map on p. xxviii, intended to be a map of the Inchon landings, is actually a reprint of the initial North Korean invasion map. Also, under the entry for "Orders of Battle", one is directed to Appendix I, which seems to be missing. However, in an undertaking as extensive as this, these anomolies are minor.
In sum, this book is a very important and useful addition to Korean War historiography. I'm certainly glad it exists and that I bought it!
For school and community library military history collection.......2002-05-06
Encyclopedia Of The Korean War: A Political, Social, And Military History is deftly edited by Spencer C. Tucker and presents the reader with a thorough, comprehensive, in-depth, and deeply researched compendium of knowledge over the Korean conflict often referred to as "The Forgotten War." Entries are listed in A to Z format; black-and-white photographs sparsely illustrate the detailed, matter-of fact text. Strongly recommended for school and community library military history collections, the Encyclopedia Of The Korean War is a superbly presented reference for looking up details concerning people, places, weapons, politics, military actions and much more about this pivotal Asian conflict.
