As little children we know how to live in the moment and be completely authentic. But then something damaging happens to us, according to author Don Miguel Ruiz: we are given "knowledge" about how to live in the world. Parents tell us how to behave in order to be a "good" boy or girl. Teachers tell us what it takes to be a "winner" or a "successful" adult. This collective "voice of knowledge" is not only false--it is often poisonous, explains Ruiz, bestselling author of The Four Agreements. It makes us believe that "I am not the way I should be; it is not okay to be me." Drawing upon the story of Adam and Eve, Ruiz refers to the forbidden tree of knowledge and likens the abandonment of the true self to the fall from heaven. What Ruiz calls "the voice of knowledge" others spiritual teachers might call ego--the hidden and carefully defended belief system that prevents us from living and expressing who we really are. "The structure of our knowledge makes us feel safe….When we discover that we are not what we believe we are, the foundation of our entire reality begins to collapse." In the Toltec tradition, Ruiz says every human is an artist, "and the supreme art is the expression of the beauty of our spirit." He explains that there are two kinds of artists: "the ones who create their story without awareness, and the ones who recover awareness and create their story with truth and love." The recovering of awareness is what this fourth book in the Toltec Wisdom series is all about. This makes for a good bedside spiritual growth book. Each chapter closes with "Points to Ponder"--summary thoughts to sleep upon as you create the more authentic story of your life. --Gail Hudson

    Book Description

The Voice of Knowledge is the fourth book in the Toltec Wisdom series by the best-selling author of The Four Agreements. Don Miguel Ruiz explores the concept of "impeccability of the word" as a simple yet potent prescription for countering the judgmental inner "voice of knowledge." Adhering to "the word" - saying only what you mean, refusing to speak against you - allows anyone to transform those inner tyrannical thoughts into a voice of self-trust and integrity. Knowledge then becomes an ally, and life becomes an expression of the authentic self.

This CD is amazing. I find myself listening to it on my way to and from work every day since I've received it. It is very soothing to listen to the narrator's voice and the recording is high quality. The content of Don Miguel's work is changing the way I think. It is increasing my awareness of myself and my surroundings and allowing me to make day to day decisions and interactions from a higher level of consciousness. This already is a treasured part of my spiritual growth and evolution process.

2 out of 5 stars Nothing life changing.......2007-05-07

Cheesy at it's best times. This book of enlightenment taught me no more than could be found on a fortune cookie or Dear Abby column. Not worth the time it took- which was not much as it's a short, easy read- it takes more time as you stop and say "Seriously? Seriuosly."

4 out of 5 stars Take off your masks!.......2007-03-17

Interesting point of view on living authentic life. Don Miguel Ruiz is an intelligent, savvy person. Each chapter is summed up by the main points. This is a guide for life, and I hope to start using my notes on it soon.

    5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2007-03-15

Another blockbuster by Don Miguel Ruiz. A little slow in the middle I thought, but the last two chapters blew me away!

5 out of 5 stars Simple words, simple wisdom.......2007-03-09

As with his other works, Don Miguel Ruiz once again challenges us to take a new look at the stories and beliefs we hold in order to reach a higher level of self-realization and communion with our creator. Ruiz' works are consistent with some of the best in human psychology, and are easily absorbed into the religious and world-view perspectives the reader may hold. Rather than challenging our relationships with God, Ruiz calls us to a closer and more intimate relationship by setting aside the false beliefs we have inherited through the years. I am sure this work may garner wringing of hands by some in the extremist movements; however, at its core, Ruiz embraces the highest and the best of world religions and calls us to make them our own.

5 out of 5 stars This tells it like it is.......2004-01-05

As a frequent traveller to Israel/Palestine and having met most of the authors of the essays collected, I am amazed at how well each from each writer's perspective have represented reality as I have come to understand the reality on the ground.

Israel's safety and a safe place for Jews is of prime importance. But safety cannot come without an equal passion for justice. Pithily put: Sow Justice, Reap Security.

It is important that the voices represented in this collection be heard. The daily headlines tell part of the story. This is another part and one that makes the story more complete.

      1 out of 5 stars a one-sided look at a many-sided region.......2003-12-02

This book does indeed include essays written by Jews, Christians and Muslims. Do not, however, assume from this that it is in any sense objective or that it examines the Middle East from all sides. This is a book in which Jewish, Christian and Muslim critics of Israel all have a chance to write about everything that they see as being wrong with Israel. No one who has been following the Middle East is in any danger of learning anything new. Those who are new to the issue are, however, likely to be puzzled by the divergence between the picture presented here and reality as we know it.

It is, after all, in the territory controlled by the Palestinian Authority that editors of opposition newspapers are kneecapped, their printing presses smashed. It is in the PA-controlled territories that people are are tried and sentenced without benefit of counsel and that individuals suspected of sympathy with Israel are routinely murdered by vigilante gangs. It is in Palestinian schools that children are taught to become suicide bombers. And Palestinian television that broadcasts racist canards about Jews.

Meanwhile it is in Israel that Muslims vote and elect representatives to Parliament. In Israel that Muslim women are equal to Muslim men before the courts.

In Israel there is a free press, an independent judiciary, and a school system that makes real efforts to teach tolerance.

That said, Israel is no more perfect thatn any other country. If you want to see all of the warts, this is your book.

Do be careful, however, about accepting the facts as presented. Whole sections would have to be shelved in the fiction section of an honest library.

5 out of 5 stars An unforgettable and highly recommended compilation.......2003-09-15

Collaboratively compiled by Maurine and Robert Tobin, How Long O Lord? is an impressive anthology of writings by Christians, Jews, and Muslims concerning the need for a just peace in Israel and Palestine. Confronting commonly held assumptions, examining all sides of the issues and attempting to untangle a complex web of conflict, power struggle, and the desperate search for hope, How Long O Lord? an unforgettable and highly recommended compilation offering understanding into a deadly, enduring, multifaceted conflict.

      Book Description

When American journalist Patrick Michael Rucker learned of the Northern Ireland peace accord signed on Good Friday, 1998, he knew he had to return. Rucker had last seen this torn country in 1991, when “the troubles” raged at a fever pitch of daily bombings and murder. Could such a violently divided society truly live in peace? What had changed? In the fall of 1998, Rucker returned to Belfast to see for himself, and this stark, gritty, spellbinding book is his report.

A fearless and brilliant reporter, Rucker sought out victims and killers, leading IRA terrorists and the loyalist counterparts bent on assassinating them, British soldiers and innocent bystanders swept helplessly into an endless undeclared war. Rucker watched as Michelle Williamson chained herself outside a prison to protest the release of the IRA prisoner whose bomb killed her innocent parents. He visited the hospital room of Liam Cairns, a young man abducted by an IRA “punishment gang” and beaten beyond recognition. He tracked down the children of Jean McConville, a widow abducted and killed decades ago for aiding a British solider–a tragic mistake that the IRA finally was ready to admit. There are scores of encounters like these in the pages of This Troubled Land, shocking portraits of a society caught in a nightmare of rage and despair.

But as Rucker discovers, despair has now begun to give way to a different mood–not forgiveness and reconciliation, exactly, for the wounds are still too raw, but a weary longing for closure. Rucker sees glimmers of hope in a Protestant mother murmuring an apology to a Catholic widow, in talk of forgetting the past, in the jarring vision of a glass-roofed double-decker bus carrying tourists down Belfast’s Madrid Street, where just a few years ago bullets flew between the Catholics and the Protestants.

In vivid, electrifying prose, Rucker captures the soul of a country at a critical juncture, a country finally putting the darkest moments of its past behind and daring to look ahead.

      Customer Reviews:

      4 out of 5 stars Very good.......2002-05-09

In the autumn of 1998, journalist Patrick Rucker returned to Northern Ireland to see how things have changed since the Good Friday peace accord. Interviewing many different people, he paints the picture of a land that is still not at peace, but filled with the bitterness from the long struggle, but too exhausted to keep the fighting up.

This book is quite interesting, showing the reader a side of Ireland that is just not visible in most books. Allowing the people to tell their own stories gives this book a powerful grip, which makes it hard to put down and harder to forget.

My one complaint is that Mr. Rucker focused heavily on the Catholic community, showing their bitterness against the Protestants, the British government and army, and against the IRA (which is painted in stark colors that are not flattering). However, even with those limitations, this is a very good book, one that I highly recommend to anyone interested in the condition of Northern Ireland.

      5 out of 5 stars Excellent read.......2002-04-06

Gripping, inciteful, fast moving account of daily life in N Ireland today. Can't put it down once you get in to the book. Great history lesson and description of how life is lived so soon after all the violence that occurred during the Troubles in Belfast and N Ireland

This book is a mileston in the long list of biased and unhealthy literature published over the years on the Kashmiri land and people. I have been looking for a book that hasn't been written by an Indian general or a Pakistani nationalist and this book provides true academic insight into Kashmir both in Pakistan (the least written about section of Kashmir) and India. The authors are Indian, Pakistani, Muslim, Hindu, ...More importantly it is supported by non-governmental organizations such as the Ford Foundation, the Rockefeller Foundation, etc. and neutral governments of Switzerland, Sweden...

      Book Description

This book reflects the range of women's experiences in the Kashmir conflict, which, for some years, has been a key issue on the Indian political map. It draws on important questions such as: how has the conflict affected women and how have they learned to live with continuing violence? What strategies have they used to cope, to find a space, or to share or express what they are going through? The contributions in this book explore these issues through interviews with Kashmiri women, personal and reflective writings, and extracts from various reports and books. Together they draw attention to a vital aspect of the conflict that has been all but forgotten.

      5 out of 5 stars A new perspective on Jammu & Kashmir.......2003-03-26

First off, I declare an interest (I known Urvashi). But I'm reviewing Speaking Peace because it's a really good book.

It's a real contribution to Kashmir studies, and a novel one. Speaking Peace: Women's Voices from Kashmir, along with Sudha Koul's The Tiger Ladies, is one of the few books that offer female perspectives of Kashmir. And it's revealing. You discover the view of Kashmir in the early 1990s from women who were there (and some who left). There's a fascinating account of 1947 by one of the contributors.

I recommend this book - and hope it makes its way onto reading lists for courses that cover Kashmir. And hopefully it will provoke some of the contributors to consider publishing book-length works of their own.

I have read several of Gerry Adam's books. This one is particularly good for someone who wishes to really understand the politics between Ireland and Britain. It gives a first hand account of the effort that Sinn Fein has put into finding peace. It clearly demonstrates how each time the british government gets what they ask for, they create another stumbling block. The reader can easily see that without Sinn Fein's initial efforts there would be no hope for peace. I thoroughly enjoyed this book.

        Book Description

Tears in the Holy Land begins where the nightly news leaves off - putting a human face, one of suffering and determination, on what was once just a headline. In this collection of oral histories based on interviews with Israelis and Palestinians, we hear the voices of those directly affected by the conflict in Israel and Palestine. They speak with commendable sincerity that reaches out from the pages and demands critical consideration. The question of which side is right and which side is wrong fades into the background as another truth emerges: the cycle of violence must cease for the sake of the personal and economic security of all people in the Holy Land and the world at large. Undoubtedly, the key to understanding is exposure, and Tears in the Holy Land is an ideal way to gain this exposure and build awareness of the crisis in this region. The book aims to end the ignorance and preconceived notions that characterize public opinion of the conflict by introducing readers to real people who have survived unimaginable acts of violence and trauma.
