Product Description
One of the finest books available on jazz guitar chords. Joe covers all the bases with two sections on chord forms and chord passages. Chords are divided into six categories: Major, Seventh, Augmented, Minor, Diminished, and Minor Seventh Flat Fifth, each showing substitutions and inversions that Joe would play when confronted with "basic" chord symbols. The chord passage section is divided into nine categories, including such topics as Major Sounds, Diminished Sounds, Augmented Sounds, Standard Patter Chord Substitutions, and other chord progression - related topics.

More than I'm ready for.......2006-02-19
This is a great book for someone more advanced than I am. I don't understand all the terms yet but I'm working on it. I know it will be a valuablr resource later in my development.
A great resource, if you're willing to put in the work.......2005-01-22
My guitar teacher recommended this to me, and I was surprised when I got it. It was so short, compared to the Ted Greene bible of every chord ever made! Where were the chord names? Not even the roots were marked! What was I supposed to do with this book?
My teacher told me to take each chord and try different roots on it. One shape can have several distinct functions. Record each voicing in a modal vamp that ascends chromatically each measure and practice playing a coherent line over it. Use one voicing to play a whole progression, or practice voice leading with many different chords. If you're willing to experiment, everything you really need to know about jazz chords is in this book.
The missing link for many guitarists.......2003-03-26
I bought this book on the recommendation of Joe Satriani, who said, in an interview, that he first began to expand his guitar playing after a month or so of studying the chords in this book. I figured I'd give it a shot, because, let's face it - if Satriani found it useful, it can't be bad.
I was pretty happy with the purchase. The book is intended, explicitly, for ear training purposes. It lists major chord groups (maj, min, 7th, etc) and within each group, Joe offers the substitutions that he uses for them. The chords are listed in standard notation and a box diagram, and there are intentionally no chord names listed to associate with them. By getting the different chord sounds and associating them with a shape, one can develop a pretty good ear for commonplace chord substitutions. This is definitely an important skill to have for an aspiring guitarist of any style - and essential for anyone who wants to be a versatile guitarist.
The second section of the book goes through progressions of chords for each sound. These are generally used as turn-arounds, substitutions of multiple chords for a single one, or can be used as whole progressions. Again, there are no chord names listed here.
The last section of this book is an actual list of common jazz progressions, and one blues progression that is apparently common for Joe Pass (and not quite so common in the rest of the guitar community - a good thing in my book). These are only slash chord charts, meaning that all you have is a few measures of slashes and the chord(s) to go in each by name. There are no diagrams or standard notation. Then, Joe goes through substitutions he uses for these common progressions. This section is incredibly useful.
Unfortunately, the last part is also the only drawback of this book that I can see. Because the first two sections do not go over the chords associated with each chord name, this book does not stand alone unless the reader already has knowledge of varieties of chords available for stuff like Amaj7+5, D(b13), etc. That, coupled with the fact that the whole thing is only 24 pages long, is the reason for 4 stars instead of 5.
All in all, this book is highly recommended. It will improve your playing tremendously, and within a short period of time.
Book Description
The art of improvising chord-style solos is an important part of any musician's resources. This book has been written to improve that art for guitar, vibes and all keyboard instruments. A careful study of these solos will give you a thorough understanding of chordal playing and substitutions. It is great for voicing as well as improvisation.
Customer Reviews:
Standard Notation Only.......2006-07-16
There are no chord grids - no tab - and many of the chords have no symbol above them. Like some of Joe Pass's earlier method books, this uses only standard notation. These solos are challenging to read, so unless you are a superb reader, you may want to write out the chord symbols above the music first.
This book is a lot of work, but I have already learned a great deal about the Joe Pass style of chord improvisation. This is not a quick study!
Not for the faint of heart.......2005-06-10
These are not "Chord Melodies". Rather they are chord improvisations over the changes of six tunes: Misty, Billie Joe, a Blues in Bb, Watch What Happens, Sunny and The Days of Wine and Roses.
Very dense chord arrangements showing different harmonic possibilities with the basic changes. I recorded these as I learned them, so I could listen to them to really absorb the material.
Joe gives no harmonic analysis at all, so it is up to the reader to figure out the theory, and boy, there's lots of it.
I'm a professional jazz guitarist and teacher....playing nearly forty years, and I still review these and pick chord licks that I like, transpose them to other keys, positions and strings, analyze the voice leading, chord substitutions, etc. I've had this book for years, and lots of it has slowly seeped into my playing. I'll play a piece, pick a chord lick that I like (like any one of them), and then try to apply it to my improvisations in other tunes.
In my opinion, for advanced players, this is one of the best books out there to dig into some really lush and melodic chord playing. I found it tough reading....and I'm a pretty advanced player. But I have worked through most of the major guitar books out there and this one is one of my mainstays.
While I'm here, I'll also recommend:
Fusion - Joe Diorio
Joe Pass on Guitar
Howard Roberts Guitar Manual Chord Melody
For players new to jazz and not so advanced, a standard book is
Mickey Baker Jazz Guitar Volume 1.
Great book.......2004-03-07
Has a lot of great Joe Pass transcriptions of standards. Not as advanced as the recordings from Virtuoso but still a great place to get started with chord melody jazz guitar.
Uhmmm.......2003-07-10
Beware, there is no tab and it is thin.

The contents, photos, stories, and glimpses of history, sorrow, celebration and transformation are beautifully portrayed in this full color high resolution magazine.
[Side Note: I bought this when it first came out, and the front cover is different than the picture shown, but the title is the same.]
The areas covered are: "A Century of Style - From Princess Diana's star power to Queen Rania's modern take on tradition, royals have shaped the world of fashion."
"Jewels" - Just an incredible close up look at the jeweled crowns, jewelry worn, from brooches to bracelets, this is really a depiction that any jewelry lover would be glad to see.
"Weddings" - from Lisa Halaby & King Hussein of Jordan, to Princess DIANA and Prince Charles, Letizia Ortiz & Felipe of Spain, Crown Prince Al-Muhtadee Billah Bolkiah of Brunei & Sarah Salleh (the photo of the custom made gold Rolls Royce is quite a Kodak moment! Grace Kelly and Prince Rainier III of Monaco adorn the pages as well as a beautiful look back in time to 1947 when Princess Elizabeth married Philip Mountbatten. And there's more!
"Behind the Palace Walls" - This takes you inside the castles with rare, true behind-the-scenes photos that are quite amazing.
"Scandals" - There are plenty of them, and they are told in an unbiased manner.
"At Play" - Ski holidays, yachting, polo matches, fun in the water - it shows the more regular human side to the royals.
"The Next Generation" - this is a rare and especially splendid look inside the lives of the grown children: Exceptional photos of Prince's William and Harry, in-the-moment action shots (sports & hugs) along with their girlfriends. Princess Caroline's beautiful young adult children, Charlotte, Andrea, and Pierre - truly magnificent.
The Editors of PEOPLE really did one OUTSTANDING job. This is a magazine/book that I will always treasure. Their collector editions are so well put together. I'm looking forward to receiving the new one Diana: Her Story, as Told Through the Pages of People when it comes out this July. Get this issue now, while you still can!

Customer Reviews:
The God's Got Three Faces and The Child's Got No Name.......2005-02-26
Nurse With Wound, Coil and Current 93 are musically manifestation of the same creative force. They are interdependent and each compliments the others. David Keenen describes this connection beautifully in this work. It begins by describing the musical scene out of which the bands all took their shape. In the strange days of the early eighties the post punk musical world was really going into several directions: oblivious pop, new wave pretension, industrial and Goth and finally bands like Current 93 Coil and NWW. These sounded more similar in there early days than they do now but still have the same vibe. What's most interesting about them is that they keep artistic focus and this book tells this story in a beautifully bound form.
The book uses a lot of quotes and pictures to tell the story of these bands using information from collaborators of the bands. It is very well researched and while many have said it reads like journalism it seems more like academia to me. The style is great and with so little actual documentation to work with quotes are one of the few viable options. It is really interesting to peer into the lives of these individuals and sometimes it is stranger than fiction: Tibet Balance Stapleton and Christofersen lead bizarre lives. This is a part of why they make such interesting work. It would have been more interesting to me if there was more said about the specific influences of the artists and the works. While we can infer much there could certainly be more here. Nevertheless what is written in this book is very enlightening to me. We as fans of the work often dissociate Coil and John Balance as a distant cousin to c93 and NWW but reading this really put the perspective in order. This book puts the artists in perspective so that even a non fan would find it interesting.
Overall I really appreciated reading this book. Being a huge fan of these bands I would be happy with anything and have often been placated by reading incomplete web pages and bad 'zine articles. This book is far better than that and really makes me appreciate the music all the more. It is by no means definitive and is missing many other bands (most notably Death In June). But I guess the book would loose focus if it were to contain more bands. This is a book that you will love to have and read again and again. Being fans of musicians that the mainstream media doesn't care about or cant understand we are thrilled to see stuff like this.
This is a Reprint of the Original... Lower Cost Same great material

Amazing .......2007-05-20
Wow! This game is really fun! its addicting! I wouldn't recomend it for kids under 5, and kids under 7 might have to mute it, cause i remember the music and the sound effects when someone died or something kinda scared me. Okay, i mean really scared me. But it doesn't now. Want some tips?
1. Never never EVER use a connestoga wagon. Buy a farm wagon. it tips over way less.
2. Always bring camphor. You never know when a person will get a concussion
3. If you're going to oregon, don't take the toll road. it takes way longer than the columbia route and theres a really hard hill you're going down. 23 of my people have died on that road. oh, and pay someone to raft you down the columbia. If you can't afford this, then cross your fingers and hope for the best
4. If you're going to california, don't take hastings cutoff. how'd u like a million mile cross in a desert or tundra?
5. Start in April or May. I made the mistake of going in June and i got to nevada when the winter snows hit and my party was stuck in the sierra nevadas just like the donners (we didn't eat eachother, though)
6. While hunting, don't shoot at bears. if you miss, the bear could and will bite you
7. During a buffalo stampede, go hunting baby. Allelujah!
8. My recommended occupation is pharmacist. You have enough money, have medical AND botany skills, and that leaves enough room for other skills
i hope you can use these 2 your advantage

This is a great guide for mastering the game!.......2001-02-26
I love the Oregon Trail II game and this book provided tons of useful information in helping understand what the pioneers faced on their journey west. It helped me achieve a really high score too (34,085)!! It is packed with information on which trail to take, how to load your wagon, which wagon to choose, which draft animals are best, how to care for your people, and so much more. I'm hooked on the game and the Strategy Guide helped me appreciate this bygone era for all it was worth. I think it is a great compliment to owning the game!
Not only helps with the game...it's also good reading!.......1999-12-23
The Official Strategy Guide is a wonderful guide. It not only helps you through your journey, but it is very informative. I would find myself sitting down to read the guide more than using it while I was playing the game. It has a lot of historical facts about the trail, the people, towns, and diseases. I would recommend buying it, because it is two-fold, informational for the game and for yourself!
Very helpful.......1999-02-22
If you are playing the 2 version of the game this book is the best. I hope to see one for the newest game version. It is still helpful in your travels. Give it a try.

The Best Travel Book on Key West.......2007-07-22
I've lived in Key West almost 20 years and this is the book I buy for anyone staying with me. In a fun way it covers the history, politics and social fabric of this quirky community.
I suggest you buy it before you visit and make note of the places mentioned in it that you might want to see. If you visit their website you can also download a free map with addresses of everything mentioned.
Key West Secrets Revealed...sort of.......2007-03-21
Cute book, mildly amusing, worth the few minutes it takes to read. Does make me want to go back to Key West, but that's not too difficult.
Excitingly Insiteful!.......2006-02-26
This book filled me in on Key West's Culture and History in a very funny and down to earth kind of way. It answered all my questions so that I wouldn't sound like a dumb tourist when I got down there on my Honeymoon.
This book is Great!.......2003-04-15
True Secrets of Key West is WONDERFUL! I lived in Key West for years and was always annoyed by all the books people wrote that didn't know the REAL story. Books that claimed to be the real story...but they changed the names, dates and circumstances. This is one that got it right AND it was very funny to read. I give True Secrets of Key West my highest recommendation.
