My only regret is that this book has not been updated in years. We need a new edition.
A wonder book for the true fan of lesbian and queer films.......2004-01-13
This book is wonderful. It is filled with over 3,00 films and videos. I found movies that i had forgot about in this book. The book is filled with Directors, Themes, Stars, and photos. I would recommend it to EVERYONE. I will have to say though, most rescent titles arent included. It was published in 1996 .

Living the dream...sort of.......2005-09-12
While the main reason I bought this book was to add to my Stephen King colection, I enjoyed the other essays about the experence. It's well written and entertaining and there were suprising stories of how the experence changed the various authors lives.
Hilarious good fun!.......2000-04-28
Although I vaguely noted the news stories when this band of idiots went on the road in 1993, I only ran across this book by chance three days ago. I read it in less than two. Although the whole idea of authors forming a rock band and doing a tour sounds pretty stupid and self-indulgent, the results were not only good for them, but surprisingly moving and inspiring for anyone who might read this book. I'm sure I enjoyed it no less than the two previous reviewers, but I'm a tough grader, so I gave it four stars.
I always knew Stephen King and Dave Barry were regular guys I would just love to meet and have a beer with, but what a shock to find out about the lovely, funny, human sides of Amy Tan, Barbara Kingsolver, Al Kooper (the musical director of this motley crew), Dave Marsh (rock critic and editor) and others!
I laughed 'til I cried over Barry's chapter. Everyone has his or her funny moments, but the chapters by Tan, Kingsolver, and Marsh are refreshingly touching and vulnerable, too.
Best quotes:
--King calls himself "a kind of Norman Rockwell version of Freddy Krueger"
--Kooper: "The mere fact that you're reading this right now is a testimony to the selfishness of twenty-three bored people."
--Roy Blount, Jr.: being on stage in a rock and roll band is "like being inside a forest fire that you're helping, however modestly, to spread"
--music critic Joel Selvin: "Most people seem to think critics are as useful as tits on a priest."
--Barry: "Our groupie budget is kinda low, so we're not getting top quality -- at times, they get a little angry at us and throw their walkers at us and stuff like that."
--Barry again: "...you can imagine how excited I was when I discovered Buddy Holly. Here was a guy who had glasses at least as flagrant as mine; a guy who did NOT look like a teen heartthrob, but more like the president of the Audiovisual Club, the kid who always ran the projector for educational films with titles like _The Story of Meat_."
--Tabitha King: "Greil Marcus informed me Southerners think the (...) they call coffee is coffee."
--Kingsolver: "...we all knew no amount of rehearsal could ever make us into a first-rate, or even cut-rate, or irate, or reprobate, rock and roll band."
There are tons of photos, black and white AND color (the ones of Tan in her black leather, chains, and whip for "These Boots Are Made For Walkin'" and of Marsh in a white prom dress, spattered with ketchup and armed with a plastic knife to attack Stephen King during his showstopping rendition of "Teen Angel" are priceless), all shot by Tabitha King.
The book ends on a weak note: Ms. King is neither the writer nor the humorist that the others are, and Michael Dorris's fable-like reverie just kind of makes you go "huh?"
I'm kicking myself repeatedly for not buying the Rock Bottom Remainders video I saw in a cheapo rack at a Fred Meyer supermarket in Coos Bay, Oregon some years ago....

Didn't Live Up.......2007-07-03
I absolutely love "The James Bond Lifestyle Seminar," but this audiobook fell short. The plot was decent, but nothing better than you'd expect based on the synopsis. The main character is supposed to be 33 years old, yet his voice sounds like an old man. He sounds very unsure of himself. Also, a lot more could have been done with the sound effects. They did not immerse me in the scenes, as another reviewer claimed.
I never wanted it to end!! Fabulous!.......2007-01-16
Mr Kyriazi's production of Hard Rock Lovers was just fantastic! I was on the edge of my seat on a daily basis! I put the audio book on my iPod and listened while I jogged. I gotta say it motivated me to get out there and I am so sad it is over! I cannot wait for his next Audio production!
The story is fantastic, gripping and sexy. I absolutely loved it!
Bravo!!!!
An all-star cast of my generation! I swooned over Rod Taylor and Robert Culp!.......2006-05-22
Wow! My sister pointed me to this audio book and I couldn't believe my ears. I just relaxed on my bed to listen and was absolutely delighted with the movie-quality of the sound effects. Not only is this a masterful, well-written plot, it's also a quality production. The best I've heard.
And those stars that the magnificent author/director Paul Kyriazi lined up for this special version of his book!!! Well, all I can say is that I remember swooning each time I saw any of them on the big screen. (I hope my hubby doesn't read this.) But when I saw Rod Taylor--who narrates this story, with such a come-hither voice--starring in The Birds with that gorgeous Tippi Hedren, I almost fainted. Yes, he was that much of a hunk ... and still is, according to my sister!
Incidentally, people used to say I looked like Tippi. Ah-hhh, memories ... But getting back to this audio book, I loved it to pieces.
Keep up the excellent work, Mr. K. You're terrific, and almost as handsome as the great Rod! Ciao, baby ...
WONDERFUL cast, beautifully performed, an EXCITING thrilling journey you won't forget!.......2006-03-15
From the moment Hard Rock Lovers comes on ... it takes you by the hand and mind, and immediately draws you into this intriquing story, narrated by the imcomparable Rod Taylor, of revenge, love, lust, cold reality and spiritual enlightenment.
Robert Culp kept me laughing with his perfect low-life agent performance, always the best! James Darren was the perfect rock star, mean, talented but sad, his performance was # 1. Ishtar Uhvana was great as Medusa, she added the sweetness to keep some reality in the rock world and her ending dialoque brought tears to my eyes. Loved Russ Tamblyn, George Chakiris was brilliant as the evil Reynaldo, and Nefta Perry as Connie played the perfect Rosie Perez.
The ending gives you hope and leaves you with happy feelings. You will want to play it again and again; it only gets better each time you listen.
Paul Kyriazi is my hero. I am his BIGGEST fan.
Thank you Paul for the fun and exciting adventure!
"Hard Rock Lovers".....Beautifully done!!.......2006-03-14
The "Hard Rock Lovers" audio book was not at all what I expected, but what a wonderful surprise! It's a twisted, tangled web of events played out by a handful of multi-leveled, intertwined characters. The story is well written, beautifully told and convincingly enacted centering on the heights of a successful rock star and the terrible costs that are paid when that success is abused. People and events are manipulated by all the characters to satisfy their own needs and agenda.
"Good" and "evil" are blurred. "Life" and "death" are blurred. Relationships are blurred, but the irony of fate is boldly presented and it's made abundantly clear that our "next" existence offers another chance to hopefully do better. The inevitability of change, the subtle and sometimes dramatic interrelationships between cause and effect as well as the ever-present, ever-looming scales of divine and poetic justice are persistent threads. A beautiful blending of drama and melodrama are used to develop both the story and the characters. The audio presentation is top-notch entertainment, particularly when you consider that all acting is accomplished solely through vocal artistry. The actors do a fantastic job of inviting the listener into their world and moving you effortlessly through the story.
I really enjoyed listening to this audio book. It is wonderful from start to finish and my congratulations go out to all involved. It's a winner on all levels.

ROCKIN' AND ROLLIN' AND DISSIN' THE DIRT!.......2003-01-01
Here's a ditty that hits all the right notes. Coral Amende, who tackled the underbellies of country music and Hollywood in her previous disinterments, leaves no (Rolling) stone unturned in her quest to find the gossip and gag-reflexes hidden in the world of rock music. There's everything from their real names to contract challenges, rumors and rampages, devilish divas and bad breakups ... even a special "How Deep is Your Love?" sidebar, in which rock icons discuss their manhood --- or lack of. We love the late Freddie Mercury's quip: "My hose in my own. No Coke Bottle, nothing stuffed down there." Wonder what Tom Jones has to say about that? Find out for yourself!
no news is no news.......2000-08-24
An amazing book filled with facts about rock-n-roll musicians that you already knew - the author goes on for pages and pages about led zepplin trashing hotel rooms (that was newsworthy, what 35 years ago), the who getting drunk and high (again, hardly a newsflash, and other boring historical details about old, has been acts. Occasionally, she breaks out of her beatles-stones-zeppelin-who mode and mentions rock and roll artits artists that are recognizable from the past decade - but when she emerges from the past into the present, she focuses on marilyn manson, korn and nirvana. The only mention of black artists (other than little richard and chuck berry), is when dr. dre is quoted talking about the beastie boys. Not much on female artists, other than the go-gos and stevie nicks. There is mention of bands and performers that i've literally never heard of. There appears to be little to no original research - everything i read in here i've read elsewhere. A great concept, but the author never reached the possibilities of it. A complete waste of reading time unless you're really facinated by keith moon vomiting stories.
Yes, rock stars prove crazier than you thought........2000-04-25
I have to admit, going into this book I knew that rock stars weren't like everyday normal people and quite often led lives of debauchery and drugs but, on finishing the book, I was struck by the many tragic (and sometimes just plain stupid) ways in which some of these people lived and died. Also to be found here is the occasional tale of irony that can only be found in the life of a rock star.
It's truly amazing that some of these people are still alive when you read through the section on substance abuse. Whether it be drugs or alcohol, the excesses to be found here are mind boggling: case in point, one rocker who drank two cases of beer a day for two years and another who did daily acid trips for the same (two years) duration.
From page to page the reader finds that, while these people may be very creative musically, they're far from being the average joe in their lifestyles as well. Everything seems to be done on a larger scale by these artists and it's these appetites that they have, whether it be substance abuse, the thrill of driving fast or constant need for attention, that leads some of them down the road to financial ruin, mental illness or, ultimately, death.
Still, this was a fun read and, while not as strong as the author's previous book, Hollywood Confidential, I still enjoyed reading it. I found myself quite often laughing out loud or shaking my head with disbelief at the tidbits revealed in this book, such as when one rocker in critical condition was lying in his hospital bed and was approached by a fan who crawled up on his hands and knees and asked for an autograph, and would recommend it to anyone who enjoyed "Hollywood Confidential" and wanted more of the same. As with that book, this book is great for reading by the pool while on vacation. I hope the author continues to give use more material in the future.
Twisted, though somewhat routine, amusement.......2000-04-15
"Rock Confidential" is in much the same vein as Amende's "Hollywood Confidential"--a catty, tongue-in-cheek diatribe against the most famous and infamous stars. But although two snowflakes may appear alike, "Rock Confidential" pales somewhat against its predecessor. Part of the problem is that even the author acknowledges that most rock stars don't have a squeaky clean image to begin with; therefore, it's not exactly hilarious or unusual to read about musicians who collect underage groupies the way some people collect stamps, or who trash hotel rooms, or get busted for ounces of cocaine, heroin, etc. Many movie stars, TV actors, and professional spokespersons have the aura (or illusion) of glamour +/or wholesome appeal to mislead the public into thinking what a fine human being this person is. For example, what American wasn't shocked when they first learned that O. J. Simpson had been accused of murdering his wife and her friend? Rock stars, on the other hand, are EXPECTED to be degenerate pigs. Even the author refers to Marilyn Manson as a wimp, simply because he apologized after trashing a hotel room. Rock stars never APOLOGIZE, any more than a real man would eat quiche.
Also, there are interesting tidbits about various rock stars here and there, but most of the time the book wades through territory that is much too familiar. What rock fan, for example, is unaware that Eric Clapton wrote "Layla" for Pattie Harrison when she was still married to George, or that Ozzy Osbourne bit off the head of a live bat? The best moments in the book are the direct quotes from rock's bad boys and girls openly trashing each other, and poking fun at the macho stud/god image that the groupies see in rock stars. Gene Simmons may be a male chauvinist pig, but he tells it like it is. The quotes from him, Ozzy Osbourne, David Lee Roth and Keith Richards make this worth the guilty read that it is. For those who enjoy disgust with their amusement, check out the comments by famous groupies, the self-delusional Bebe Buell in particular, and realize that the only thing more pathetic than a nubile, loose young groupie is a washed-up old groupie.
"Rock Confidential" doesn't have much else to offer in the way of enlightenment, and it's not meant to be a rock Bible. There's no real insight into the lives of the rich and famous; it's merely fluff for the masses, entertaining as some of it might be. As noted before, however, the trials and tribulations of the carefully sugar-coated and sparkling-imaged MGM actors of old were more amusing because here were "perfect" idols with clay feet. For the subjects of "Rock Confidential", clay feet would definitely be a step up.

GOODBYE TO ALL THAT REVISITED.......1999-09-21
ROCK AND ROLL (now named RAP---hell of a P.C. gesture for a rockcrit who, in the latest edition of the BOOK OF ROCK LISTS, listed the Rolling Stones' 1976 BLACK & BLUE LP the"first album to fall victim to political correctness," i.e., feminist protests against that LP's misogynist ad campagin) CONFIDENTIAL bills itself as "The Voice Of The Undesirable Element," and, truth to tell, on such issues as music censorship, the newsletter does often serve a useful purpose. Unfortunately, the newsletter is too often a retro-acid flashback to the male-left rhetoric that destroyed the 60's radical movement. For example, in this book, RRC disses and demonizes "women's music" artist Cris Williamson with the viciousness the U.S. government demonizes its enemines (RRC compares her to Cambodia's murderous leader, Pol Pot---which, to me is like George Bush Sr. calling Saddam Hussein worse than Hitler). And elsewhere, Marsh and his RRC cohorts rake the New York branch of NOW (the National Orginization for Women) over the hot coals for criticizing Bruce Springsteen's use of the term "little girl" in his songs. Now, if this meant that Marsh & Co. were taking a consistent stand against "the tyrrany of political correctness," I'd respectfully agree to disagree----but in the same book, they voice staunch support for a similar campaign against the 80's heavy-metal group Def Leppard by a Hispanic-rights group for calling Latin-American immigrants "greasy Mexicans." Mexicans." I guess that in what they call "The Rock & Roll Confidential Era," Mexican-Americans have made it the ranks of Downtrodden & Oppressed, but women haven't. RRC owes NOW or Def Leppard (or both) and the politically conscious everywhere an apology for one of the most naked examples of hyprocisy ever to come from a group calling itself "progressive."
