A fun read, especially if yoiu're a sports fan. I read it in search of things that would help my own ability as a coach in my company. Much of it is light stuff but the easy read makes it fun nonetheless and there are few golden nuggets laced throughout the book.

    Book Description

The seventh volume of Brecht's Collected Plays contains plays written during his six-year stay in the United States from 1942 to 1948. The Visions of Simone Machard is a French resistance version of the Joan of Arc story. Schweyk in the Second World War transposes Hašek's "good soldier" to the Prague of Hitler and Heydrich. The Caucasian Chalk Circle, originally written for production on Broadway, with W.H. Auden responsible for the verse, has since become one of Brecht's most popular works. Webster's The Duchess of Malfi, adapted by Brecht and H.R. Hays, is also included.

The volume, edited and introduced by John Willett and Ralph Manheim, includes an extensive commentary as well as textual variants and Brecht's own notes on the plays.

5 out of 5 stars A Lesson in Spiritual Growth.......2001-05-10

The Seven Visions of Bull Lodge is one of a very limited literary source or documentation of the Gros Ventre (Grow-Von) American Indain Tribe of Northern Montana. Known to themselves as the White Clay People, Bull Lodge was a powerful spiritual healer and warrior, being one of the last fully authorized Keepers of the White Clay People's sacred Feathered Pipe. The information comes from the Depression Era (1930) as told by Bull Lodge's daughter, Garter Snake. Fred Gone translates the story of her father's spiritual and leadership journey. George Horse Capture, Sr. ed. the text to introduce the reader to the issues and worldviews of the White Clay People.

Anyone interested in authentic tradtional culture and an understanding of the sacred lands of Montana will find the book of interest. Anyone seeking to learn more about the Great Plains Cultures will find this book insightfull.

            Book Description

Shaping a New Vision for Downtown Los Angeles, a companion volume to L.A. Now, features the results of the design initiative--seven architectural proposals to meet the future needs of downtown Los Angeles--as well as a record of the critical process. Shaping a New Vision presents the full set of computer renderings and project descriptions for each of the proposals, with excerpts and photographs from the UCLA design juries, including provocative commentary by Dana Cuff, John Kaliski, Sylvia Lavin, Greg Lynn, Eric Owen Moss, Wolf Prix, Robert Somol, and Richard Weinstein, among many others.
            ABOUT THE TWO-VOLUME SET
Los Angeles faces rapid, continuous growth in the new century. Even though today's vital infrastructure and systems are pushed beyond capacity, the greater metropolis will receive an additional two million people by 2005. To prepare for this tremendous growth, the city must reconsider its planning strategies as well as the revitalization of the downtown core--the geographical and symbolic heart of Los Angeles and, potentially, the connective tissue for all of the city's cultures. By applying original thought and creativity to the challenges of the downtown area, we can begin to plan now for the real consequences of Los Angeles's future growth.
Conceived by Richard Koshalek, L.A. Now is a collaborative design initiative to focus creativity on downtown Los Angeles and provide the foundation for its future development. L.A. Now brings together the work of UCLA architecture students under the direction of studio leader Thom Mayne (Morphosis), CalArts Graphic Design students, and Art Center film and photography students and others in two distinctive, lavishly illustrated books.

              Product Description

Do you sometimes feel lost when you read the Book of Revelation? Do the images and actions seem bewildering and the meaning confusing? Opening the Seven Seals combines outstanding LDS and biblical scholarship. Richard D. Draper, a popular Education Week speaker, discusses the themes of Revelation, examining the book section by section. Some questions he addresses include: • What is apocalyptic literature? • What do the various beasts represent? • What is the significance of numbers and their use? • What are the differences and purposes of the seven seals, seven trumpets, and seven bowls? • How does the book testify of Jesus Christ and warn of Satan? • What does the book say about the last days, the Millennium, and the final judgment? Opening the Seven Seals will help the reader find the fulfillment of this promise: “Blessed is he that readeth, and they that hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written therein: for the time is at hand” (Rev. 1:3).

5 out of 5 stars Understanding the Book of Revelations.......2005-08-02

Very well written analysis of the Book of Revelation. It goes through each verse of the book, and provides thought-provoking insight into Revelation's symbolism and imagery. It also is the first book I've read that gives a plausible sequence of events leading up to the Return of Christ. The author is a Professor of Ancient Religion at Brigham Young University. Although written from an LDS perspective, it is well documented from many non-LDS sources as well, and is highly recommended for anyone who wants to comprehend more of the Apocalypse and the Last Days.

The history of audience research tells us that the relationship between the media and viewers, readers and listeners is complex and requires multiple methods of analysis. In Understanding Audiences, Andy Ruddock introduces students to the range of quantitative and qualitative methods and invites his readers to consider the merits of both. Understanding Audiences: demonstrates how - practically - to investigate media power; places audience research - from early mass communication models to cultural studies approaches - in their historical and epistemological context, explores the relationship between theory and method; concludes with a consideration of the long-running debate on media effects; includes exercises which invite readers to engage with the practical difficulties of conducting social research.

                    Book Description

Media semiotics is a valuable method of focusing on the hidden meanings within media texts. This book offers students an in-depth guide to help them investigate and understand the media using semiotic theory. It assumes little previous knowledge of the field, avoiding jargon and explaining the issues step by step. The two basic features of the methods used are the historical study of media and their genre and the analysis of the meaning structures that such genres encode. Semiotic analysis is sometimes seen as complicated and difficult to understand; Marcel Danesi shows that on the contrary it can be readily understood and can greatly enrich students' understanding of media texts, from print media right through to the internet.

                      Book Description

"What is it that happens when we understand something?" Malcolm Barnard relates the understanding of visual culture to the traditions of natural and social science and applies the theme of scientific understanding to the principal approaches to understanding art and design. Formalist, Marxist, gender-based, semiological, hermeneutic, and expressionist approaches to visual culture are clearly explained, through a wide variety of examples from fashion, architecture, film, fine art, and comics.
