Book Description
Harmonization at the Piano contains a thorough study of harmony and styles of piano playing through the use of music literature of the common practice period, as well as folk and popular songs. An attempt has been made to show the similarity of chord progressions in all the music presented. This text may be used as a college text for keyboard harmony and functional piano as well as a supplementary text for classes in written harmony and music reading.

This is one of very few books that covers cord progressions and typical rythms found in music. However, the book is almost completely free of explanations. It is just a collection of short scores that demonstrate a principle in each chapter. The principle that is being demonstrated is not explained. It is possible but difficult to work out the point of each chapter for yourself. The book is not really appropriate for self-study.

Great reference for Bach figures/embellishments.......2007-05-04
The previous reviewer is referring to "part two" of this text, the portion which deals with counterpoint, etc. However, players of J. S. Bach will especially appreciate the first part of the text, which has a large chapter explaining the various embellishments which one finds in J. S. Bach's works; it is a fine reference for anyone playing music with Baroque markings for trills, turns, mordents, etc.

This an historically significant work worthwhile for a number of reasons--of course--, but I am particularly interested in its treatment of figured bass. Why? Although it was composed after Rameau published his revolutionary theory of root progression, C.P.E. Bach repudiated Rameau's theory, and this work remains untouched by it. Consequently, reading this is the easist way to get a feel for how things stood before Rameau and (ironically for C.P.E. Bach) to appreciate truly Rameau's achievement.

Not that I know how to play the music well but I wanted to have the music for reading along with poetry book. Would be nice if they had the music book as a ring so can open to a piece and not ruin the book. I just wanted a keepsake because may not have a chance to see it again, on stage. A black cover and the yellow eyes which show figures of cats posing a figure.

This book is totally awesome and is highly recommended for anyone who love the broadway musical "Cats". I have seen it twice now and look forward to seeing it again if the opportunity arises. Having this book lets me live what I have seen and remember the beauty, joy and fun of the show. I'm very excited to have this book.

Okay, so I wasn't a big CATS fan. I have never seen the show, but have heard the music from CDs. I must say the music is highly addictive. And it's Andrew Lloyd Webber, so how could you go wrong? This book would be the best book for piano because it contains basically every song. But, I have to warn beginners, it can be extremly hard. Most of the songs jump around between sharps and flats, and when they do it's usually four or five at a time! It will take alot of practice to get it down. All the songs are fun to play. It's one of those books where you start at the beginning, and play every song without skipping any. Overall a great buy.
If You Love MUSIC and CATS This Is The Book For You........2001-10-14
Wow! I was amazed how great and useful this book was. It includes 19 songs of Cats Classics. Most every song is written just like Andrew Lloyd Webber did himself. It also includes pictures from various Cats casts through out the years. If you are a theater buff, and enjoy being up on stage, then this is a great audition book. With songs like Memory, Skimbleshanks, Gus:The Theatre Cat, Mr. Mistoffeles, and many others. It will leave you at the piano for hours playing away. When of the best things about this is that it is the COMPLETE book of songs from the musical. I highly recommend this, and I hope you will enjoys this as much as I did.

Good for younger beginners.......2007-01-03
This is a nice book and it is very nice to have the accompaniment CD. I recommend using this for grades 9 and lower, as high school students with exposure to more advanced musical literature may find the songs too simple.

I found this book very good for accompaning my daughter with her violin. However, you must regard the fact that it is not for learning piano.
An Excellent Book For Intermediate Violin.......2000-07-28
Suzuki Violin Series is a great series! Especially the fifth book. I've been studying by Suzuki Violin Series for four years. It's really great! There are some really great concertos, if you know how to play. And the exercises, like tonalizations and shifting, are excellent and really helpful. And with the piano accompaniments, it sounds great! Also, the fingering is very cleverly done, so you can practice a lot of shifting and vibrato while playing and practicing the concertos themselves. This book is excellent for intermediate students for violin, and especially essential for shifting practices!

Amazon shipped this order twice without including the violin part. Finally I gave up and ordered it from another source. Return was a minor hassle as Amazon told me to preprint a return label which they they wanted to charge me for via deduction from refund. After a protest they came around and refunded entire price.
Good music, but a little tough for a true beginner.......2007-01-10
These solos start with a few quite easy songs, but very quickly the solos become much more difficult. There doesn't seem to be much for the "just a little better than rank beginner" player. That said, the music is much more satisfying than most available in books for beginning players.

The string books are completely compatible with each other and can be played together or as solos. Due to level considerations, the string books are not compatible with the books in the wind series.

Personally, I have really enjoyed this piano book. The pieces are meant to be accompaniments for instruments such as trumpet or clarinet, but they contain enough of the melody that they can be enjoyed on their own. "Concerning Hobbits" has to be the highlight of this collection. I have been playing piano for four years and am concidered intermediate to late intermediate, and this is exactly my level. If you are not that advanced, you can pick through the melody line written above the music. There are some very neat pictures in this book too. I would reccomend this selection very highly. (I would have given it 4.5 stars, but you can't give half stars.)

My 12 year old daughter is in her 2nd year (7th grade) of flute playing -- she is in the school band but does take private lessons from a classical music flute artist, once a week. My daughter is really enjoying this book. However, she could NOT work with these pieces of music with out her private teacher. I recommend this book for students who study privately aside from the school band.
