The book, entitled Celibidache!, consists of essays and interviews with the composer and musical theorist. The film, produced by his son, is entitled Sergiu Celibidache's Garden and examines the many facets of his relationship to music.

Perhaps the most fascinating and perplexing aspect of Celibidache's professional career was his lifelong opposition to the recording of his performances. He was, of course, a provocative and controversial maestro—contentious, impassioned and ingenious.

Celibidache, a native of Moldavia in Eastern Rumania, studied music in Bucharest and then in a Berlin conservatory under the tutelage of Heinz Tiessen. He conducted the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra for the first time in 1945, while still in his 20s, as most of the established conductors were undergoing de-Nazification. Subsequently he conducted in South America, Scandinavia, France, Germany, and other countries, often working with less prestigious orchestras because of his staunch refusal to allow recording of the music he conducted, though this also allowed him to work through his own unorthodox methods. He also did a good deal of teaching. Sergiu Celibidache died in 1996.

The film features numerous performances of the Maestro conducting pieces composed by Mozart, Haydn, Schubert, the Maestro's beloved Bruckner, and others. Given his longstanding resistance to mechanical reproduction, these performances make the film a unique experience. Celibidache agreed to participate in the film only after constant urging by his son, the director. The film also features numerous sessions of the Maestro instructing young students.

the dvd is about the relationship (of unity) between master and apprentice, music and its enablers, tension and resolve.

interesting window into the personality of celibidache.

the forms through which celibidache is being explained tell us something about the youth of serge ioan. the overall statement of the package is rather remarkable--profound and honest.

the english translation for the dvd is mostly accurate--however, celibidache's opinion about the american interprets of classical music is translated as an opinon about all interprets of classical music.

rather simple book--alas misspelled. does not contribute a whole lot to the economy of the package.

This is a great book. Very clear and basic. Exactly what 3D design students need. HOWEVER, it is way too pricy. AND desperately needs a new edition updated with color pictures and more current art work.

Good Basic Sculpture Advice.......2005-10-25

This book is a good reminder of the fundamental elements that make good sculpture. The author draws from a variety of resources and includes lots of visuals. There are some project suggestions in the back of the book to allow more hands on interaction with the idea of three dimensional design. I would recommend this book for any beginner in 3D and as a good reminder for more experienced sculptors.

Superb device.......2000-10-01

This book really got me on my feet with the whole "three dimensions" thing. Before reading this swashbuckling tale, I feel my life existed in only 2 dimensions. It took this masterpiece for me to realize that my view of the world was horribly obscured B.U.T.D. (Before Understanding Three Dimensions). This is a life altering work of brilliance, form first dimension to third.

Upon my reading of the book, I took much time to contemplate the intricacies of the genious of the Authors. Especially Jerry Leisure, who, in my opinion, possesses one of the greatest minds of the century. I recomend this book to anyone who is interested in this subject matter.

If you've been involved in taijiquan for any length of time, you've heard the stories: about the bird in the hand, or about the founding of the art, or about its theft.

This is a storybook for the modern day.

The academic bits in this book seem either commonsense or incomprehensible (I'm sure the author won't be surprised to hear this). But whether from his anthropological training, his background in drama, or just his inborn talent, Adam Frank is a great storyteller. He presents multiple perspectives on the art--including his own--with neither scepticism nor belief, but with a relaxed and tolerant curiosity.

We get to find out what it's like eat bitter in solitary, intensive practice, to study with a master on the streets of Shanghai, and to negotiate being a white student of a Chinese art; about the politics within a taijiquan family organization, the shape of taiji tourism, Chinese nationalist reformulations of the art, and the way martial arts films have formed our imaginations.

This book should be on the shelf of every serious player. I hope the publisher puts it into paperback soon!

Looking for Mr. Brush Knee Twist Step.......2007-06-13

This is an excellent book about the experience of studying taijiquan in Shanghai. The author is personable, sympathetic and intelligent. He manages to study with a lot of different teachers within the Wu (Wu Two not Wu/Hao) school in China. It is very much like a modern "Masters and Methods" by Smith with the added focus of being taiji only. Imagine the Cheng chapter in Smith's book made booklength. Unfortunately this is an academic book with the bogus academic pricetag. However, the author is more taiji student than academic so it is definitely worth your time. Until the publisher wakes up and drops the price to $16.95, just go to your public library and put in an InterLibraryLoan request for this puppy. That's what I did for a whopping $2.34 in postage charges -- a savings of $60.
