5 out of 5 stars The one to get!.......2007-05-21

Larger size for failing eyes. I bought my first copy in the mid-60s, the miniature score, and paid almost 50% more for a score 50% smaller. If you collect scores, add this one to your collection!

5 out of 5 stars Solid score.......2007-05-09

This is a good full score of one of Bartok's most famous pieces. It includes some notes about the piece as well as the composer's original program notes. It also includes both the original and alternate endings to the 5th movement. I used this for study with a high school music class.

This is THE edition to buy. Good print, adequate size, everything you need is there.

    Book Description

Bartók's Concerto for Orchestra has proven to be one of the most popularly successful concert works of the twentieth century. It is seen by its champions as an example of Bartók's seamless blend of Eastern European folk music and Western art music, and by its detractors as indicative of the composer's artistic compromise. This book contains a discussion of the historical and musical contexts of the piece, its early performance history and critical reception. It also includes the first complete movement-by-movement synopsis of the Concerto, as well as detailed technical information about the work.

        Book Description

When Bela Bartok died in September of 1945, he left a partially completed viola concerto commissioned by the virtuoso violist William Primrose. Yet, while no definitive version of the work exists, this concerto has become arguably the most-performed viola concerto in the world. The story of how the concerto came to be, from its commissioning by Primrose to its first performance to the several completions that are performed today is told here in Bartok's Viola Concerto:The Remarkable Story of His Swansong. After Bartok's death, his family asked the composer's friend Tibor Serly to look over the sketches of the concerto and to prepare it for publication. While a draft was ready, it took Serly years to assemble the sketches into a complete piece. In 1949, Primrose finally unveiled it, at a premiere performance with the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra. For almost half a century, the Serly version enjoyed great popularity among the viola community, even while it faced charges of inauthenticity. In the 1990s, several revisions appeared and, in 1995, the composer's son, Peter Bartok, released a revision, opening the way or an intensified debate on the authenticity of the multiple versions. This debate continues as violists and Bartok scholars seek the definitive version of this final work of Hungary's greatest composer. Bartok's Viola Concerto tells the story of the genesis and completion of Bartok's viola concerto, its reception over the second half of the twentieth century, its revisions, and future possibilities.

3 out of 5 stars Sorry Knock-off of the show.......2003-06-03

I admit that the show is rather enjoyable, or at least was with Regis, but the book left me a little wanting. Bear in mind that it is a typical quiz book with questions and answers in the appendix. It could be fun for an organizational party or something, but just sitting down and reading it is a little absurd. There's not all that much trivia to cover, and moreoever, its got very little re-readability.

                    4 out of 5 stars For the show's fans........2001-08-20

This book generally contains fascinating tidbits about the most popular game show on television today. However, it did not include as many trivia questions as I assumed there would be. Some questions are at an easy level while others are more difficult, similar to those that actual contestants answer on the game show. Unfortunately, the questions fail to cover a broad range of topics. I agree that too many trivia questions focus around the media, even television shows that I never even saw. But if you enjoy the show, then this makes a good collector's item. YOu'll have a more enjoyable time answering the questions that appear on the show instead of the ones in this book.

4 out of 5 stars Cool book and neat trivia..........2001-08-14

This is a good book, and it is fun to play the games in it! However, I would like to have seen more writing about the actual show. There are only a few pages that discuss the show, and then the rest of the book is the games. It is neat to play the 15 Millionaire games that are included with family members and friends, though, and test each other's knowledge. Overall, this is a fun and enjoyable book, and I recommend it to anyone who is a fan of "Who Wants to be a Millionaire" or just a trivia buff.

                    3 out of 5 stars OK.......2001-01-17

This book is not as great as it sounds. Michael Davis barely gives you a "behinds-the-scenes" look. It's very boring too. There are pages and pages of questions and the answers are there. I don't recommend this to anyone, except the WWTBAM fanatic Rosie O'Donnell.

5 out of 5 stars Who Wants to Laugh Out Loud? .......2006-10-19

OK, so it was the title that got me since i was not a "Who Wants To Be a Millionaire" fan. My friend loaned it to me and i had HAD to check it out. Then i had to have one of my own.

What a clever, funny book that was clearly written from the heart. What a fresh directive. I could almost hear the author talking to me. I could almost "see" the people and nearly experience what was going on, the desciptions were so clear.

I think Im now a Millionaire Fan..

Now i tape all the shows to find J.E.'s show and watch it. -THANKS ALOT -

All i need to know now is.....what's next Millionaire Boy?

5 out of 5 stars Lots and lots of FUN!!!!.......2005-06-14

This book was a lot of fun and much like several of the others who have written reviews of Millionaire Boy:The Adventures of a Game Show Contestant, I found myself laughing outloud several times.

The perfect sitting by the pool book!
If you like Dave Barry, you'll appreciate the humor in this book.

Anybody know if the author has written anything else?

5 out of 5 stars Dave Barry eat your heart out..........2003-02-25

With all the wit of a Dave Barry read but better! Full of humor and trepidation about making a public appearance on national television. The true story of making your dreams a reality. A great book that is very difficult to read without pausing to go back and read parts out loud to who ever might be around to listen...friends, family, cats, pillows.

                        5 out of 5 stars I was so excited..........2002-12-15

about writing a review for this book, Millionaire Boy/The Adventures of a Game Show Contestant, that I forgot to rate it with stars. 5 STARS! 5 STARS! 5 STARS!

                        Loads of fun!
                        A very entertaining read!

5 out of 5 stars this is a book for everybody!.......2002-12-13

I wanted to read this book for several reasons. ONE because it was about one of my favorite tv programs, Who Wants To Be A Millionaire and TWO because the author was from Montana.
I enjoyed this book thoroughly! It was well-written and very amusing.
The author has a very comfortable style. It is really like he is talking right to you. There are inner monolouges to let you know what he is thinking at key parts of the book.

This was a very visual book, because the author's descriptions of people, settings, and activities were superb!
I had read other reviews of "Millionaire Boy" and questioned if people were really laughing out loud as they claimed.
I can atest to the fact that this is a very funny book and, yes, I DID laugh out loud. SEVERAL times!
I have passed the book along to other fans of WWTBAM and they have enjoyed it as much as I did.
I too am looking forward to the author's next book.
I think he has a great future ahead of him.

Have a game show fan or a Regis Philbin fan on your gift list?
This is a book for them!
But like I said at the beginning, "Millionaire Boy" really is a book for everybody!
