Book Description

This book will help you learn to recognize and create the three vital elements of producing top-quality recordings - a great song, a great performance of that song, and a great sound. Olsen shares his expertise on musical themes, performance, arrangement and musical trends. Then he takes you into the recording studio, with discussions of microphone placement, drum recording, acoustic and electric guitar, monitor speakers, and the pros and cons of building a home studio. After you've mastered those concepts, you will learn about the more technical nuts and bolts of producing, the vibe in the studio, and of course the engineering aspects, including the use of effects, the spectrum of sound, and mixing. Finally, you need to know your path through advertising and legal matters for your productions, and Olsen does not disaapoint, demystifying promotion, royalties and copyrights, pirating and intellectual property rights. In short, this comprehensive guide is your key to the world of producing quality products!

2 out of 5 stars a little of everything and not MUCH of anything.......2007-10-01

At least the title is really not decieving. "Thoughts" is pretty accurate. Not much in the way of info, except maybe some mic techniques.
It just seemed more like a bragging rights book - throwing 'insider' words at you while explaining what you would already know if you knew those words. Well actually, not much was explained, just hinted at.
Pretend you're a well respected producer who's 'in the know' with all the shortcut terminology, and you get together with another of the same background and chew the fat, tossing the latest hip vernacular back and forth over a few drinks. Man oh man do you feel cool.

1 out of 5 stars A bad read, with few insights........2007-06-27

Two words of advice for anyone contemplating buying this book: don't... DON'T.

There may be some good ideas buried in here and I'm sure author Keith Olsen is a talented music producer, but he should not be writing books. (Even the title is poorly worded: anyone think "Creating Music: A Producer's Thoughts" might have rolled off the tongue a bit more easily?)

I'm equally sure the talented editors at Thomson Course Technology tried to make it a smoother read, but they must have been so exhausted by the first editing round that they had no energy left for the rest of the misspellings, sophomoric prose and howling grammatical errors. It even appears as if Olsen has commas and periods mixed up.

And what about those creative insights? The brave souls who do succeed in hacking their way through the thicket of bad language will be rewarded with such pedestrian gems as: "It's much more important to have a great part played well than a poor part not played very well..." Really, he wrote that.

The middle section -- at 75 pages it forms the bulk of this 118-page book -- is the most disappointing. Here Olsen delves into the recording and mixing processes, subjects treated in much greater depth and with far more clarity in many other well-known professional books, periodicals and websites. (Even this book's one truly useful item, a musical frequency chart, turns out to have been lifted [with proper credit, at least] from an old issue of Stereo Review.)

Chatty and anecdotal in the early pages, Olsen abruptly shifts styles in these middle chapters and becomes Mr. Engineer: "Say for instance you have a lot of input level (about a -10db average); you set the gain of this first stage mic preamp at medium (about +20db) and you push the fader up to '0.' What's happening to the transients? Now you add +5db at 1500 Hz and wonder why it sounds a bit clipped or just a bit scratchy." Nothing wrong with any of that, you'd say. Except that nowhere does Olsen bother to define db or Hz or transients or clipping, or even faders -- not in the main text; not in the criminally incomplete glossary. Woe be unto the recording studio neophyte, for whom the book ostensibly was written.

Perhaps the saddest commentary is that the highlight of this sloppily thrown together work is the well-worn but still funny Blind Rabbit/Blind Snake joke. It can be found, strangely enough, in the glossary.

5 out of 5 stars a fresh and honest outlook from one of the biggest producers in history .......2006-11-15

" A Music Producer's Thought to Create By" gives the reader a fresh and honest outlook from one of the biggest producers in history on the aspects of recording in a home studio; starting with the conception of the idea, all the way through to the final mix. It has helped me to better understand the technical recording process and serves as a wonderful reminder to first and foremost; always focus on the creative.

5 out of 5 stars Get This Book - Thank Me Later. By Joe Solo.......2006-10-25

Keith Olsen's insights into the realities of the music busines are downright hilarious, frank and...well, insightful.

When reading this book, you will get the perspective of one of the most respected music industry acheivers without any of the sugar coating that is typical with entertainment industry writings. He tells it like it is, often lacing his point with very humerous anecdotes where the names have NOT been changed to protect the innocent. In fact, he points out that there are no innocent in this industry.

Keith will inspire you to constantly think "outside the box." He emphasizes music, spirit and creativity over technological engineering chops. These are important lessons to learn for anyone who has an interest in finding out what goes on under the hood of making records that have long standing relevancy.

As a songwriter and producer, I have created a few platinum records myself- thank you for your invaluable thoughts, Keith.

Get this book- and you can thank me later.

5 out of 5 stars A must read for anyone into production and producing!.......2006-04-10

I've read a several more expensive books that didn't deliver anywhere near the amount of practical information as Keith Olsen's book A Music Producer's Thoughts to Create By. This is actually the first book I've seen that explains in plain english how to produce. I felt I had received my monies worth after getting midway through the first chapter.

Whether you're an aspiring artist, songwriter, producer or engineer headed for the studio you owe it to yourself and your art to read this book first... not just because you'll discover what a really competent producer does. Rather for the money-in-the-bank bonus. That being some of Olsen's best production techniques which he's used on countless million selling albums gleaned from a stellar studio career that began nearly 40 years ago. To me, you just can't go wrong with that kind of sage-like wisdom dispensed by a man who has obviously delivered the goods consistently for decades.

4 out of 5 stars Fun and Fabulous insight into age-old traditions!.......2003-06-06

What I truly loved about this book, aside from it's fun, compact, easily tote-able size, is that it tells the story of many beloved New York holiday landmarks and traditions, from the Thanksgiving Day Parade to the Tree at Rockerfeller Center. As a New Yorker, these are integral aspects of Christmas--Celebrated and admired year after year with little question or understanding as to where their traditions stemmed. This book takes you back to the first windows ever displayed on 5th Ave, while telling fun, quirky stories about the Macy's Parade balloons and how in the early years, they were actually released into the air at the end of every parade. This was eventually halted when an airplane almost crashed into one, and ships on the Atlantic reported strange floating sea creatures! I have always loved New York during the holidays and I feel as if this book has increased my appreciation of them by giving me a greater connection to their origins. It's a quick read, which is good in one aspect, (it covers a lot of topics) but you don't get a whole heck of a lot of detail on each topic. Though, it is just enough to keep you interested and moves you right along to the next topic. The only reason I didn't give this book 5 stars is becuase none of the photographs in the book are color. Personally, I would have been willing to pay slightly more for the book to get color pics.. You just dont do justice to Christmas anything in black and white--but its nice that there are a few pictures, especially that of the first Rockerfeller Christmas tree ever, that workmen erected on the then construction site during the depression. The men spent so much of their time their, they got their own little tree and decorated it with cans and other things that were strewn about... But truly this book would have been much improved if color photographs were included. Otherwise this is a fun coffe table table medley of history and tradition!

      5 out of 5 stars Couldn't Be Better.......2002-01-08

This book couldn't be made better if you tried. Daniel Pool did an excellent job describing New York at Christmastime. From Rockefeller Center to Tiffany's & Co. This book describes everything to see, from store windows to parades, to movies.

This is a must have for anyone visiting New York this holiday season, and a beautiful book to add to any collection.

5 out of 5 stars Read before you visit New York at Christmas.......2000-10-04

I bought this book to share with my three sons, as we are taking our first family vacation to New York this Thanksgiving, and I was looking for something to enhance their appreciation of the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade and Radio City Music Hall Christmas Spectactular. Without even looking I knew the author was a New Yorker. Reading this book feels like listening to a narrative by someone in your family, describing the charm of your own home town to a young adult or out of towner. Of course this town is New York City-the very heart of the Christmas Spirit in the United States! This book gave me what I was looking for and so much more. As if the sheer sight of New York at Christmas isn't enough, the history and stories shared by the author has deepened my love of the Holidays, this sensational city and the people who experienced it in the past and in the years to come.

5 out of 5 stars Christmas in New York is another treat from Daniel Pool!.......1997-12-10

Daniel Pool has scored again! The social historian who delighted me with What Jane Austen Ate and Charles Dickens Knew, as well as his second book, Dickens' Fur Coat and Charlotte's Unanswered Letters, has written a delightful, entertaining, fact-crammed little book on the Christmas holidays in New York.

The photographs are great fun, since so many of them recapture important moments of the past. The design of the book makes it luxurious to hold and easy to read.

This book is the stocking-stuffer par excellence because it is learned, visual, and, most important, fun!

          Book Description

“Anyone who knew New York in the 1970s knows it was a different city from
that of today. New York Calling is like a Rough Guide to a city receding into
a dim past but now brought startlingly, evocatively to life by the amazing
group of writers assembled by Marshall Berman and Brian Berger.”
––Francis Morrone, author of The Architectural Guidebook to New York City

New York City in the 1970s was the setting for Taxi Driver, Annie Hall, and Saturday Night Fever, the nightmare playground for Son of Sam and The Warriors, the proving grounds for graffiti, punk, hip-hop, and all manner of other public spectacle. Musicians, artists, and writers could subsist even in Manhattan, while immigrants from the world over were reinventing the city in their own image. Others, fed up with crime, filth and frustration, simply split.

Fast-forward three decades and today New York can appear a glamorous metropolis, with real estate prices soaring higher than its skyscrapers. But is this fresh-scrubbed, affluent city really an improvement on its grittier––and more affordable––predecessor? Taking us back to the streets where eccentricity and anomie were pervasive, New York Calling unlocks life in the unpolished Apple, where, it seemed, anything could happen. All five boroughs––the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, and Staten Island––comprising hundreds of neighborhoods and the interlaced worlds of politics, crime, drugs, sex, and mischief, are explored with a love of the city unclouded by romance yet undimmed by cynicism.

Acclaimed historian Marshall Berman and journalist Brian Berger gather here a stellar group of writers and photographers who combine their energies to weave a rich tale of struggle, excitement, and wonder. John Strausbaugh explains how Uptown has taken over Downtown, as Tom Robbins examines the mayors and would-be mayors who have presided over the transformation. Margaret Morton chronicles the homeless, while Robert Atkins offers a personal view of the city’s gay culture and the devastating impact of aids. Anthony Haden-Guest and John Yau offer insiders’ views of the New York art world, while Brandon Stosuy and Allen Lowe recount their discoveries of the local rock and jazz scenes. Armond White and Leonard Greene approach African-American culture and civil rights from perspectives often marginalized in so-called polite conversation.

Daily life in New York has its dramatic moments too. Luc Sante gives us glimpses of a city perpetually on the grift, Jean Thilmany and Philip Dray share secrets of Gotham’s ethnic enclaves, Richard Meltzer walks, Jim Knipfel rides the subways, and Robert Sietsema criss-crosses the city, indefatigably tasting everything from giant Nigerian tree snails to Fujianese turtles.

It’s a long way from old Brooklyn to the new Times Square. But New York Calling reminds us of what has changed––and what’s been lost ––along the way.

              Book Description

This book is a vivacious inquiry into how Asian Indians in New York, or Desis, as they describe themselves, perform Indianness, or Desiness, in several cultural variety shows that are mounted in New York City: The Indian Independence Day Parade and Cultural Program, the South Street Seaport Deepavali Festival, the Sindhi Divali Show in Queens, and the variety shows of the South Asian college students of New York University.

Along with the fact that these community cultural productions underscore Desiness (i.e., that these are songs, dances, foods, and crafts for the non-Indian to see, learn from and consume and for the Desi to reminisce, enjoy, and be validated by) these productions reveal a tense negotiation between the preservation of Indianness and the assimilation to US American life. Indeed, though the traditional, touristic kind of Indianness may be touted by certain elite groups, this type of Indianness is simultaneously being deconstructed and subverted by other Indians who assert their own, sometimes opposing views of what it means to be Desi. This work utimately demonstrates that Desi identity is ephemeral-it constantly needs to be manufactured and begs to be performed.

              Customer Reviews:

              5 out of 5 stars well researched.......2002-10-14

Mukhi provides a good amount of research and understanding into the South Asian Diasporia in the northeast. There is a growing sense of how these people identify themselves in America. Different factors such as caste, ethnicity and religion come into play. The 'desi'- those of South Asian ancestory or immigrated at a young age are trying to identify themslves in the larger society. They are trying to find out what's like to be an Indian so far away. One of the more public displays of this is that of parades such as the India day parade or performance such as during deepavali festivals which are the focus of Mukhi's research. She's a desi being born in the Phillipeans and then immigrating in to the U.S. These public displays provide an opportunity to be in a large group to celebrate people's ethnicity, they can wear traditional indian clothing and eat Indian food. Indian movies also come into play because of India's role as the world's larges film producing nation and its imports to the Indian diaspoira. These movies provide an opporunity for desis to see movies made by those of their heritage.

5 out of 5 stars much props to this desi sista!.......2001-05-19

This is indeed a one-of-a-kind book that everyone interested in performance practice should read. It exposes us to the south asian american (desi) community in the NYC area... Don't let the price scare u off -- it's really worth every penny. I've seen the writer, Sunita, perform around the NYC area and she is a true artist to the core. Her one-woman-shows are creative pieces of genius and her acting ability on par with folks like Eve Ensler, Ruben Santiago-Hudson, Sarah Jones, Danny Hoch, and other amazing talents. be sure 2 check it out! Peace...

4 out of 5 stars EXTREMELY INSIGHTFUL & WELL WRITTEN!!.......2000-12-19

Sunita Mukhi's book provides an extremely insightful glimpse into the lives of Indians living in New York City. Amongst a backdrop of a cosmopolitan melting pot like New York, Dr. Mukhi accurately portrays the identity challenges many Indians face: they are caught in between cultures. If you are an Indian like myself, you will find many parallels within your own life. It is a poignant book & I highly recommend it!
