5 out of 5 stars A Great Book from a Great Writing Teacher.......2003-07-21

Alan Armer will take you through every step of creating your screenplay masterpiece with the most valuable and practical advice you could ever wish to have. His words are worth reading to anyone who cares about the craft of screenwriting.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Screenplay Book I Know (By Far).......2003-01-15

I've been a professional television writer for twenty years, including "Remington Steele," "Hill Street Blues," "Northern Exposure," "Picket Fences," and "Early Edition." I have won an Emmy and Golden Globes for my work and have taught at UCLA Extension among other places. For my money, Alan Armer's book is the best guide to the actual work of professional screenwriting that exists. This is the real thing. It is honest, wise, and free of jargon. It contains useful exercises so that both instructor and student can concentrate on the work at hand rather than spend a lot of initial time and emotional energy discussing an aspiring writer's personal work, a process which often puts unnecessary and unfortunate obstacles in the way of learning the craft. Armer doesn't try to sell you any shortcuts, smake oil, or magic formulas. Quite the contrary, he encourages you to open your mind and imagination through the discipline of solid craftsmanship. He understands the process of writing. He gives many examples about what works and what doesn't and explains why. He includes priceless interviews with some great writers. It's simply a marvelous textbook from a great teacher, a lovely man, and a master practitioner of the art.

5 out of 5 stars Armer: The Greatest Screenwriting Teacher of All Time.......2002-10-24

I was most fortunate to be a screenwriting student of Alan Armer's at Cal State Northridge and I can tell you this man knows ALL when it comes to the subject of writing and how to inspire people to follow their dreams. His books are probably the most valuable tool any screenwriter could have. If you are serious about your writing, you will buy this book.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource!.......1999-10-31

I recommend this book to my screenwriting students.

5 out of 5 stars The best screenwriting book out there........1999-03-03

Alan armer lays out the fundamentals of screenwriting in an easy to understand and apply way. Since reading the book I have taken three classes from him. He is incredible and his book can only improve your writing. It's worth the price!

4 out of 5 stars Above Average.......2000-07-25

Pretty good screenplay to a pretty good movie. Interesting fact: this isn't the final version of the screenplay that was used in the movie. In fact, there are a lot of differences. But simply put: if you like Crichton's novels you will like this one, as it features more of his trademark realistic science and suspense. However, the plot is somewhat cliche, and the ending is pretty weak, and that's why I give it 4 stars.

4 out of 5 stars THE ORIGINAL.......2000-03-04

Imagine a cyclone of dirt, stone, and just about anythingthat's nailed down is ripping through the road right in front of yourcar.

That's exactly what Michael Crichton and wife, Anne-Marie Martin, imagined when they wrote this screenplay called TWISTER.

An exciting story about two competing teams of scientists who try to place a special sensor pack into a tornado during a day of endless twisters.

The story is pretty much set aside in favor of exciting action sequences and a humorous romance between the two main characters. But it's still quite a bit of fun.

This is the couple's original draft of the script, made interesting because of it's numerous differences from the final film. The main plot is almost exactly the same, but dialogue, supporting characters, and a great many smaller details will be new to readers who enjoyed the movie.

The book also features an informative intro by Crichton detailing the conception and writting of the script.

So, whether you're a fan of the movie or a fan of Crichton, I'd definately have to give this book a strong recomendation.

And be sure to look out for that cow.

2 out of 5 stars DON'T DO THE TWIST.......1998-08-15

Twister is a bad movie with a horrible horrible plot that adds up to nothing. It's about a couple of tornado chasers that fall in love. Ever so dumb plot. The only thing that makes me give this movie two whole stars is the special effects (although the movie deserves only one). Special effects are great in this movie. If your a no plot special effects freak (buff), then you would love this horrible movie Twister. Rated PG-13: for language, and scenes of tornado damage

1 out of 5 stars JESUS WHAT A DISASTER; SO BADLY WRITTEN, IT HURTS.......2002-10-16

This thing is abyssmal, just terrible and amatuerishly written. Nuff said.

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful, absolutely touching.......2001-11-13

This movie is unbelievably bello, carino, it is beautiful. The story is touching, the landscape is like candy, and the ending is beautiful as well. Lucy is a girl almost a woman, who is searching for her the answer to an intriguing passage she found in her mother's diary. She is also searching for the boy, now almost a man also, who she kissed the last time she visited the breathtaking Italian villa four years past. This movie will leave you feeling like you have just witnessed a moment of beauty so strong and so intense that you will feel changed.

3 out of 5 stars Not as good as the movie.......2001-06-05

This book was a spin-off from the movie, Stealing Beauty, and like most books based on movies, the book fails to capture the mood and romance of the original. Description of the Italian countryside in this books pales in comparision to Bertoluccis' masterful use of the camera. The magnetic appeal of the film is lost in second-rate descriptive attempts and clumsy use of words. Regretfully, the author gets caught up in retelling the movie's blocking and action scene by scene and forgets to focus on the characters and the story being told.

However, if you enjoyed following Lucy's coming of age story and want to relive the moments, you could like this book.

For people who loved the film, Stealing Beauty may be worth a look. For everyone else, I'm sure you could easily find a more thoughtful, worthwhile and enjoyable book to read.

5 out of 5 stars Actually the best book I've ever read, no kidding.......2006-01-11

I have about 20 books in my room and this one is one of them and it's seriously the best I've ever read, regardless of genre.
I don't even write much screenplays these days but sometimes I still re-read some chapters and sitting there nodding "yup, that's so true".

The examples are so good, I thought that probebly a book like this would just make examples from boring drama movies and discard action as garbage, but the examples vary from Robocop to Beverly hills cop.

My favrouite chapter is about the Hero, finally I can explain for real why I don't like Harry Potter, becouse for me he is not a hero, and this chapter analyses what a hero is so I can make sure that in my screenplays ppl will actually hope that the hero will sucseed unlike in movies like Harry Potter where I'm hoping the evil wizard will kill his ass.

5 out of 5 stars GREATNESS.......2005-02-15

This book is amazing... I have Dona Cooper for class at the North Carolina School of the Arts and she is amazing. What a wealth of knowledge she has to share, and has shared in this text. A+++ Read!!!! A Must-Have for any screenwriter...

4 out of 5 stars Great Book!.......2001-12-08

When writing for television and film some people may think that all you have to do is come up with an idea and write the screenplay. The reality is that there is a lot more to it according to Dona Cooper, the author of the best-selling book, Writing Screenplays for Television and Film. The major theme that she continuously uses throughout the book is the two-dimensional roller coaster theme. The roller coaster analogy is to help "capture the sense of thrust, power, build, and intensity that a good story experience must have." This book targets readers who are more advanced and are ready to market their screenplays as soon as everything is together versus a beginning writer who wants to learn the basic steps of writing a screenplay. The majority of this book is written with strong structure. She develops key concepts and backs the structure of the different types of roller coasters that can be incorporated in many story elements. She writes with the idea of not telling the reader first you need to do this step, instead she lets the reader explore the different possible directions they can take. Her advice allows the reader to develop their own way of writing and their own sequence of writing. Beginning writers may want to gear away from this book. For the more advanced writers this would be a great book to purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book!.......2000-04-18

You should definitely own a copy of this book. While it is not aimed at total beginners, intermediate and advanced writers will find it invaluable.

5 out of 5 stars A must read for anyone remotely interested in screenwriting.......2000-01-20

If only every book was as well written as this one.... This book is one of the best books on screenwriting I've ever read for one simple reason: Clarity. The material in this book is presented in a wonderful "reader friendly" streamlined structure. Full of useful information yet straight and to the point. A great read for the beginning screenwriter.

Book Description

Including a facsimile of the complete shooting script--Academy Award-nominated director Scott Hicks (Shine) shares his vision transforming the bestselling novel into a seamless and profound masterpiece of a movie. Set in the Pacific Northwest a few years after the end of WWII, Snow Falling on Cedars is a powerful, lyrical meditation on the heartache--and consequences--of lost love. It tells the story of Ishmael Chambers (Ethan Hawke), a journalist reporting on the trial of a Japanese American accused of murdering a local fisherman. The trial forces the entire village to face the shame of sending their Japanese American neighbors to internment camps following the bombing of Pearl Harbor and becomes the turning point for the honorable but wounded Hawke to free himself from his obsessive passion for his childhood love, the Japanese woman now married to the accused. Here is a deeply haunting mystery and a heartbreaking tale of passion, justice, and the accidents of nature which rule every corner of the universe. In the Newmarket Shooting Script Series format, here is the complete shooting script, an introduction by Hicks, notes and storyboards with his own drawings of scene renditions and camera angles, and a detailed interview revealing how he envisioned turning the acclaimed David Guterson novel into a movie. Illustrated with production stills and examples of several versions of poster art, the book is a must for all film students, fans, and lovers of the novel. The movie stars Ethan Hawke (Great Expectations, Reality Bites), James Cromwell (Babe), Richard Jenkins (There's Something about Mary), Youki Kudoh (Picture Bride), James Rebhorn (The Game), Sam Shepard (Safe Passage), newcomer Rick Yune, and Max Von Sydow (Hannah and Her Sisters). The producers are Kathleen Kennedy (E.T., The Color Purple), Frank Marshall (Raiders of the Lost Ark), Harry J. Ufland, and Ron Bass.

4 out of 5 stars Successful screen adaptation of a complex novel.......2000-04-25

Everyone will acknowledge that to adapt a novel for the screen always amounts to a difficult - and in many cases a downright impossible - undertaking. This is not any different with "Snow Falling on Cedars", a novel that is remarkable for its use of different time levels as well as an array of characters complex enough to scare off most scriptwriters. Given the difficulties Ron Bass and Scott Hicks must have faced while adapting the novel, I am all the more pleased with the result of their work. All in all it is fair to say that they have succeeded in writing a script that never runs the risk of cutting the novel's central thread and that pays attention to a great many of the book's intricate details. One drop of bitterness, however, is exactly the use of the aforementioned time levels - or "time frames", as Hicks calls them in his commentary that closes the script - as their complex arrangement both threatens the smooth evolving of the story and tends to confuse those readers not familiar with the novel. But then this may have to do more with the general problems associated with bringing a novel to the screen than with Bass' and Hicks' qualities as scriptwriters, and I would still recommend this script to anyone interested in getting to know more about the filming of "Snow Falling on Cedars" and about adapting a novel for the screen in general.

Every writer is an experienced teacher and/or examiner and most titles (with the exception of ones with 'British' in the title) have a fairly international perspective.

5 out of 5 stars Nostalgic look at old Florida and what has been lost........2007-06-27

As a native Floridian, I have bemoaned the loss of the state I remember. Shopping malls and amusement parks have replaced much of what I think of as Florida. This book speaks to these feelings and should be read by anyone concerned about the rampant growth of our society which seems bent on destroying any sense of the past. At least we can glimpse what was once there through this well written and heartfelt book.

5 out of 5 stars Not a blade of grass left........2006-09-21

My grandma says "there won't be a blade of grass left." Belleville explains why. A personal story of man who finds the true Florida, a people who scratched out a living in the early days and survived many hurricanes, only to be swept away today by developers. Highly recommended reading for anyone who is fighting urban sprawl.

5 out of 5 stars Offers Floridians and others hope for appreciating nature.......2006-06-21

Bill Belleville is a documentary filmmaker and author specializing in conservation: how work has appeared extensively in magazines, has been anthologized in collections, and he's written many books, but LOSING IT ALL TO SPRAWL: HOW PROGRESS ATE MY CRACKER LANDSCAPE hits closer to home than many of his other books. Bill Belleville writes of his historic Cracker farmhouse and old neighborhood of central Florida even as it's being wiped out: any who have visited the area in the last few years will readily acknowledge the truths and observations in LOSING IT ALL TO SPRAWL. In addition to documenting the underlying social, political and economic forces at work in promoting sprawl, Belleville offers Floridians and others hope for appreciating nature.

5 out of 5 stars What price, progress?.......2006-03-31

Fifteen years the author lived in a 'cracker' house at the end of a dirt road and shared the solitude enjoyed by former occupants for more than seventy years. It was a perfect hide-away for a freelance environmental writer and film maker, where privacy was respected, where nature was sufficient unto itself and its creatures, and where the only compromises with modernity were indoor plumbing and electricity. Even the window unit air conditioner was redundant in a house designed in simpler times, well shaded and with natural cross ventilation.
One day the shrill back-up signal of earth-moving equipment shattered the tranquility, a nails-on-blackboard, unsettling sound that forewarned of loss of innocence to come. A new mega-mall is planned nearby, and already the landscape is denuded and sculpted to accommodate the thousands of cars, SUV's and service vehicles that would respond. "If you build it, they will come." (With apologies to W. P. Kinsella.)
Bill Belleville is an award-winning writer, the author of River of Lakes, A Journey on Florida's St. Johns River, Deep Cuba and Sunken Cities, Sacred Cenotes and Golden Sharks. His film making credits include an Emmy award for Wekiva: Legacy or Loss.
It was Belleville's cracker house and his story, and the story of those who lived there before. But in a larger sense it is my story and yours, all of us who have witnessed the sacrifice of the playgrounds of childhood and the sanctuaries of memory at the altar of 'progress.' But we don't have to write it. Bill Belleville has done it for us with the same beauty and poignancy that marked his earlier works, but this time with righteous anger born of loss.
A wonderful, compelling, intensely personal book that reminds the rest of us of what we, too, have lost, and leaves us asking "What price, progress?"

I loved Al Burt's newspaper columns because he wrote about a Florida that only someone who got there before 1975 would even recognize. They are even more fun to read now. Makes me want to hop in the car and drive to Micanopy!

Al Burt is a Florida institution. For many years I bought the Miami Herald on Sunday just so I could read his column. Now, many of my favorite columns are available in something more permanent than the back page of a magazine, and honed and polished and brought up to date to boot. When I'm not thumbing through it, this book rests right next to my copies of Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings and Marjory Stoneman Douglas--Al Burt's kindred souls among those who love Florida and explain it to others in ways that the Chamber of Commerce never will master. More, more. Please!

not a story of cracker life so much as separate descriptions of parts of cracker culture.

      4 out of 5 stars (Re)defining "cracker" identity.......2005-06-08

This is an interesting study of cracker culture in Florida. In many parts of the South, and among many Floridians, the name "cracker" carries with it a lot of negative connotations. Within the past 30 years, however, a certain "Florida Cracker Chic" has emerged, and in many communities being cracker is now seen in a much more positive light. Dana Ste.Clair provides a good historical sketch of the term "cracker," and he looks at interesting aspects of cracker history and culture. I especially liked the sections on cracker cowhunters and the discussion of cracker folkways. The book also includes some vivid historical photographs, excellent illustrations from 19th century magazines, interesting excerpts from books and articles about Florida's rural communities, and a list of contemporary living history sites where one can experience a sense of Florida's cracker folklife. The book provides a good, balanced discussion of both the positive and negative aspects of cracker history, and Ste.Clair sympathetically looks at people who were cracker when being cracker wasn't cool.
