Book Description
Alphabetically arranged, the entries in this encyclopedic study cover Woody Allen's movies, plays, fiction, television shows, and stand-up comedy from 1964 through 1998. Film entries begin with basic production information followed by a literary analysis of the work, which considers how and why Allen develops new narrative forms for conveying his stories. The dominant themes in Allen's work and the literary and cultural traditions he draws upon are discussed. Entries draw connections among Allen's works, outline his relationships with specific cinematographers and actors, point out major influences, and demonstrate how Allen fits into the Western canon of literature, film, and philosophy. Collectively, the entries reveal a serious and substantial artist whose experimentation with narrative form and structure enables him to explore human nature and human relationships in a new, innovative, and insightful manner. Literature and film scholars and Woody Allen enthusiasts will appreciate the easily accessible information provided in this encyclopedic format. A filmography and bibliography follow the entries and offer suggestions for further research. An index is included and photographs enhance the text.

A Great Little Book.......2001-02-21
To tell the truth, I wasn't expecting much when I first picked up this book. I'm a Woody fan but I thought the encyclopedic format (topics are alphabetized as in an encyclopedia) would be too superficial or unfocused. However, once I started I couldn't put it down. Actually, I did put it down because I have a busy life. But that's why this book was perfect for me. I could read it in "airtight compartments." I could read a section, get my fill, put it down, and come back to it an hour or day later and dive right in again.
I learned a lot about Woody, his movies, major themes, the people he's worked with -- and, most importantly, life in general. I'm particularly interested in the Woodman's ideas about love and relationships (yes, I need the eggs). This book allowed me to review a lot of his movies fast in an overview type of way and discern some of his patterns about "eggs" I hadn't perceived or had only perceived blurrily. In fact, I think rereading it in this way will yield newer and deeper insights each time because the author, a professor, writes with great depth and insight (yet in a very readable and economic style).
Although, as I said, I'm a Woody fan I have to admit that there were a number of his works I either didn't understand or didn't even know about. This book gave me a new appreciation to see movies I had dismissed (or simply missed) for one reason or another.
If you're a Woody fan this is a great book to have. In many ways, it transcends Woody by putting his work in the context of modern thought and art. But it's still a great Woody book and one that any thinking fan is going to enjoy.
Book Description
In this prime collection of first-hand interviews, 37 of the world's top record producers share their creative secrets and hit-making techniques - from the practical to the artistic. George Martin reveals the technical and musical challenges of working with The Beatles, while Phil Ramone, producer for such artists as Billy Joel, discusses studio wall treatments. Offering real-world advice on everything from mics to mixing to coaching a nervous singer, producers interviewed include Arif Mardin (Aretha Franklin), Brian Wilson (The Beach Boys), Alan Parsons (Pink Floyd) and more.

Great resource for wanna be Producers & Engineers.......2007-03-09
This book is a collection of interviews by some of the best engineers and producers in the business. The content within the interviews reflect the personality of the person being interviewed, which makes for a great balance between those that love techspeak and those that need to understand the soft skills involved in capturing killer performances by artists. Topics covered include the differences between US based engineers and producers vs. their UK counterparts (the latter prefers to print effects to tape directly if things are working.) Another set of questions the interviewer regularly asks are related to project/home studios and the comparisons between the those environments vs high end studios. The responses are candid and enlightening.
If I could sum up best info in the book is that ALL of the interviewees restate the same thing- there are tons of variables but critical to great recording results falls mostly to good mics and the use of dedicated mic pre amps.
Other takeaways:
- Rooms obviously color the flavor of the recording
- Mic placement varies as much as the choices of mics
- Digital vs. analog debate still continues, but good recordings fundamentally result from choosing technologies that you believe are the magic sauce to laying good tracks and understanding their weaknesses to compensate accordingly
- Capturing a great performance is far more important than technically perfect recordings
This is another book that provides more fuel for your gas tank!
Get This Book.......2006-04-11
If you're interested in recording, if you have a project studio or have hopes of producing a music cd, you must get this book. It was more like talking with and getting great advice from over thirty producers, than reading a book. I couldn't put it down.
pure genius.......2006-01-30
I highly recommend that anyone in the music business read this book-- wether or not you are interested in making hits. it's full of really useful information, basically there is no one approach-- everyone has hits on their own terms.
all extremely talented and intelligent people are interviewed.
recommended for home-recordists especially.
Interesting interviews with legendary engineers.......2005-02-08
This is an fine set of interviews with engineers who have worked with the legends of rock and roll. Most of the time is spent discussion mic positioning, filtering, and mixes. There is some coverage of analog versus digital, and some amusing anecdotes about the performers. It's a fun read for those looking to glean a bit more sage wisdom from the pros. There are no diagrams, detailed specifications or settings to impart. This is higher level, about the approach of sound design and how one works with tricky personalities.
Good Hands on-Nuts and Bolts(knobs and Mic's) Kind of stuff.......2005-01-19
The author asks a bunch of recurring questions to nearly all the subject producers. Any musician/composer with some time under his belt struggling to self produce at an objectively professional caliber will recognize the starkly relevant real world challenges underlying those questions. The fact that so many of the questions repeat from one interview to the next only makes the many varied answers all the more interesting. If you're a starry eyed wanna-be mesmerized by the supposed glamour of pop music making, look elsewhere. If you want to know how the grunts in the trenches actually make hit records, don't read this book once; read it repeatedly. I still am. As much to absorb the no bs, no excuses, no slacking, know your stuff, just get it done, mind-set common to these seasons pro's. (no young bucks here)
Book Description
From the early days of music, record producers have served an important role in the studio, providing musical ideas, sonic beds and inspiration. Styles range from Svengali-like dictators to the nearly absent, yet producers are a constant in some of the best known recordings of the day.
"Producing Hit Records" takes a behind the scenes look with today's top record producers at what it takes to sit in the big chair. Producers talk about how they got into the field, how they continue to get work, how they motivate artists to come up with that great take and what it's like to work in an industry that's constantly changing.

One easy method.......2007-05-24
What did I learn from this book? Basically, record someone or a group of people playing whatever you interpret to be music using whatever method you feel like using and keep your fingers crossed that it becomes a hit. Which is exactly what I thought the method was. This method also works the same for making movies except you use actors instead of musicians. Wait, actually, no it doesn't matter if you use actors or musicians, or even people for that matter, it's all really interchangeable. Just make sure you record your efforts onto some sort of media that can be exchanged for money. Do whatever you want, but remember the most important thing is keeping your fingers crossed.
Great Insights for Musicians and Music Listeners.......2006-08-06
David Farinella's well-written book is based on interviews with an astonishingly diverse group of A-list music producers. They speak candidly about the creative process, covering everything from technology in the studio, to weird working hours, to coping with substance abuse. Musicians will appreciate the producers' perspectives on the dynamics of making records (the nuts and bolts of recording great songs and realizing the artist's vision). Record collectors will look more closely at the producer credits on their records (which may not even show up on downloads!).
The book says as much about the recording industry as it does about the role of the producer, because the fact is that there would be no such industry without the people featured in the book. They are as indispensable as the artists themselves, though they may not enjoy the respect and appreciation that they clearly deserve. Record companies chisel away at their earnings, consumers don't know who they are or what they do, and uninitiated artists often don't trust them.
What emerges clearly is that the producers are all in it for the music. They are dedicated to bringing great songs to light and will make any sacrifices necessary to achieve that goal. David Farinella has given many of them an open forum where they share honest, frank opinions about their role in the artistic process. It is a fascinating and informative book.

The best book on the game's esoterica.......2003-06-17
If any pro football book deserves to be expanded and updated, it's this jewel of an effort. Daly and O'Donnell have produced a fascinating retrospective of all that makes football what it is, and reveal some little-known bits and pieces that even the most studied fan won't be aware of. A pity it's over a decade out of date . . .
There are no canonisations and platitudes here (for instance, the book criticises in detail Vince Lombardi's late-sixties draft choices and suggests he might have handed Phil Bengtson something of a poisoned chalice - an interesting theory, if nothing else), and no tedious top-ten-this or worst-five-that lists for the more mentally challenged. Instead, there are decade-by-decade glimpses of the game which, taken together, produce the best historical, fan-level portrait of the NFL I've ever come across.
My only complaint - and it's a small one - is that the book does fall back on the inevitable statistical section and identifies what it believes to be the "greatest" players. There's enough of this junk in other books ("Total Football" leaps to mind); I would have preferred more pages of esoterica and amusing photographs.
This is a book really worth searching out for if your idea of a good read is something other than a fawning biography or Officially Licensed propaganda.
Great job O'D!.......2003-04-09
Great job on the book Mr. O'Donnell. We're very proud to see you represent Wakefield High School. Also, we don't think that you should stop writing. You're a great writer (as you can probably tell by all these wonderful reviews). Keep up the wonderful work. We love you! Best wishes from your favorite girls, Holly, Rahel, and Remela

Do not miss this book...........2002-05-15
quite frankly, this is the most entertaining pro football book I have ever read, and I believe I have read the vast majority of them. It has inside stories that you will not find the details on anywhere. It is funny, historical, and factual. I just wish there was an updated version. I have worn out my original copy I bought 10 years ago and am now on my second copy.
Wow. No, WOW!.......2002-02-13
Boy oh boy, do whatever you have to do to get a copy of this in your hot little off-season hands. (Today is Feb 13) I've been a fan all my life, so I think I know a few stories, but every single page in this book is a joy ... so much I've never heard of, or have only heard of peripherally ... and ALL told in utterly entertaining fashion. I can't put the book down. I have just one complaint: when are the guys who wrote this going to do an update? When, when, when? I want the first copy.
My favorite sports book ever!.......2001-12-11
It's funny how you see baseball book after baseball book exploring the past, analyzing the statistics, and uncovering untold stories. Very few football books have ever come out to fill this void, except for this great work. This book is eleven years old, and I still find myself going to it at least several times a football season. Pro Footbal Chronicle profiles forgotten stars such as Big Daddy Lipscomb and Hardy Brown. It tells of the attempt to fix the 1946 NFL Championship and of the saga of Red Grange from college to the pros. It explores the unbreakable records, the big hits, the classic rivalries and....I could go on and on, but I won't. The reason is simply that you should buy it. It is the best sports book ever writen about the greatest sport ever played. I just hope there is an updated version in the works, which would shed some new light on the largely untold story of pro football's roots.

Customer Reviews:
No new information.......2002-09-19
Don't get me wrong, I am a huge Dre and Eminem fan but this book isn't worth your money. It has little to no new information for fans who have spent a little bit of time and surfed the web for bios and such. For those who say this book is great because Dr. Dre is one of the best rappers on the planet, they are mistaken. Dr. Dre is not a rapper, he is a producer. I'm not dissing Dre and Eminem, but this book is poorly conducted, any 7th grader with the internet could have thrown this together in about a month or so. Save your money and read something informative.
Few interesting facts.......2002-05-05
I gave this book two stars because I think that the author could have done a better job writing it and looking for information. Although she tells the facts, the writing is too [disappointing]. The pictures in the middle are excellent, though. A little more effort and this book could have been excellent. Dr.Dre's story has a lot of interesting details, same as Eminem's.
dreem.......2001-09-09
fantastic. it tells about how N.W.A., dr. dre and eminem got started. it was an easy and interesting book to read. i recommend it to people that like rap but don't like to read that much.
I Luv Em. This book rocks!.......2001-01-14
I love Em and this book made me love him more. Read it and you will fall in love with him if you haven't already. It talks about how he started out and what he was like as a teenager and how he keeps it real and is not a fake. The pictures are so hot. It also tells you all about Dr. Dre and Snoop Doggy Dogg and a bunch of other rappers and that's good. But I love Eminem Marshall Mathers because he is the prince of hip-hop and I can't wait for his movies. He's gonna be the best actor Hollywood has ever seen. They might erase this but I hope he dosen't get back with Kimberly because I would marry him. When I read the book I pretended I was his girl and he was happy about that.
Most Complete.......2001-01-08
This is an excellent book. It's the only one out on Dre and the best one out on Eminem. If you want to know everything about two of the most talented rappers on the planet, get it. Nuff said.

Never knew they had goods songs before disco.......2007-08-13
Nice book if you like to play chords and sing along. Guitar tab would have been nicer. Great older songs I never knew off. Talented song writers. Not really into the disco thing but some songs just great no matter what type of music it it.
Major Improvement.......2004-10-24
I have to tell you, I was amazed at how revised and improved this new anthology book was, compared to the box set anthology book (red-beige color). This book has all the songs from "The Bee Gees--Their Greatest Hits--The Record album".
The guitar chords are improved, more specific, and not to mention, they sound better once you play them. Here are the songs that the chords that were improved or totally refurbished:
How Deep is Your Love
Nights on Broadway
Love So Right
There are probably others; just got this in the mail the other day. But I tell you, I was expecting the same old chords for the good songs, and yet, the Bee Gees revised the chords to make it easier and sound better.
Only music sheets are present in this book--no discography or comments from the Bee Gees about songs, which doesn't really matter since the new chords make up for that very nicely.
Thanks Bee Gees!
Jeff
Great For The Non Musician As Well.......2002-08-18
Finally we have all the lyrics to the great songs on "The Record". It should have been included in the original liner notes of the CD set. No matter. This is the full collection for Piano, Guitar and Vocals, for those brave ones.

Customer Reviews:
A good reference book.......2007-06-22
Many people may be familiar with Joel Whitburn's books giving chart information on popular songs from the past, based on the Billboard charts. David Lonergan has produced a similar book, but with enough differences in concept to be a worthwhile addition to a reference library. In some ways his book is better than Whitburn's; in other ways not as good. But they are DIFFERENT, and your own needs will determine which is better for you.
Whitburn's books are organized by artist; all songs by an artist are listed together chronologically, and if you want to look up who recorded a particular song, you will have to go to an index at the back. Lonergan's book is organized by song, and if you want to look up something by artist, you need the back index. This is the basic, most fundamental difference between the two books, and will be a major part of any decision which book to buy.
Whitburn has also decided that the date in 1955 when Billboard went to a top-100 format was a major breakpoint; none of his pop chart books spans both sides of this 1955 date (except for individual songs). This means that if you want information on both the early and late 1950s, you need two books. Lonergan does no such division; this book runs from 1950 to 1975. (Of course, since my interest extends back to the late 1940s, I'm still slightly out of luck, but this book at least covers most of the period of greatest interest to me in one place.) But you will have to consider your own range of interests.
There are differences in what information these books provide. Whitburn gives not only record labels (which Lonergan also has) but catalog numbers as well, and some statistics such as number of weeks on the charts that Lonergan does not. But Lonergan gives the names of the songwriters, which Whitburn does not. (However, he has not always researched out the division of labor between the musicwriter and the lyricist, sometimes giving both equal, undifferentiated credit where one of the songwriters is known to have written lyrics and the other to have written music.)
In short, which is a better book will depend on what you are looking for.

It deserves a second edition........2005-09-23
The Billboard Book of Number One Country Hits covered the field from 1968 to 1989; and much has happened in Country Music since then.
Interesting Compendium.......2004-07-11
"Number One Country Hits" contains information about all 848 songs to hit #1 on the Billboard country charts between January 1968 and December 1989. Each song listing includes the artist, writer, producer, and week it hit #1. This basic information is followed by 6 or so paragraphs telling the story behind the song. Some of the entries focus on the artist and her/his struggle to hit it big; others talk about what inspired the writing of the song. For example, Dolly Parton was dieting when she wrote "It's All Wrong, But It's All Right" while holed up in her hotel room, avoiding her crew who were eating fried clams at Howard Johnson's. If you enjoy country music from this period, you'll find all your favorite artists here, from Merle Haggard, Tammy Wynette, and Glenn Campbell to Randy Travis, Garth Brooks, and Clint Black. Unfortunately, the book has not been updated, so pick it up while it's still in print.
