3 out of 5 stars Just Like Reading the manual.......2007-05-12

I wouldn't call this much of a "QuickStart" guide, because after you read it, you are still wondering how to proceed. It is more of an overview of a lot of the functions contained in Maya, not a "HowTo" guide or tutorial. Most of the Peachpit books have been good to get you up and running quickly, but this one....not so much.

5 out of 5 stars Very good quick reference book.......2006-11-23

This book is more for those that are somewhat familiar with the Maya menus or the intermediate user who needs a quick reminder of where something is or how to get started.

This book is a fantastic quick reference tool on how to get some of the Maya features working. Everything from setting up marking menus, changing the interface, overviews of basic and advanced tools, and even an overview on some of the more advanced features like dynamics and fur. If you want to get started on something quick or learn what tools are available and how they can be used, this is the book for you. There are no "tutorials" per se, but it does have little "Try this..." opportunities at many of the feature explanations that get you right into doing something.

The only drawback to this book is that the feature overviews only skim the surface of the program's capabilities. If you want a detailed, deep exploration of something like texturing, modeling or some other feature, this book falls short; but you'd need a half-dozen books to cover that anyway.

    5 out of 5 stars good.......2007-05-15

Good book, needed to learn in class. Maya is a very vast program, many books will be needed for tutorials.

    5 out of 5 stars A Great Buy.......2006-03-04

This book is awesome. I would recommend this book to anybody who has ever looked at Maya and felt overwhelm by all the menus and features. This book gives you information about the tools and menus and some uses of the tools in plain English with plenty of black and white visuals.

I am a novice with Maya and this book is a godsend. I've tried those "learn by following me" books but I would get lost along the way and most of the time I am just mindlessly clicking on stuff. Visual QuickStart Guide for Maya 6 sympathizes with the complete newbie by clearly explaining how things work and in some cases which method is more appropiate. Plus,it is cheaper than the Official Learning Maya books.

Note: This Book is a reference so don't expect to learn how to model a character by reading this book. However it is still helpful if you are doing one of those "follow me" tutorials or taking a class and you just need something to fill in the blanks or explain the tools.

3 out of 5 stars boring and dry.......2005-12-02

i felt this book was really boring and uninformative. it was required for a class, and i bought a new one, becasue it just didnt describe things in an engaging manner.

    5 out of 5 stars Great Book!.......2005-03-14

This is a great book. You cannot beat the clear and to the point explanations of Maya's features. I really wish the writers would create individual books on Poly modeling and NURBS modeling.

5 out of 5 stars Easy reading and full of useful info.......2005-03-06

I've used visual quickstarts books to get up to speed quickly on HTML, Photoshop, and CorelDRAW and they've always been a good investment. The Maya 6 visual quickstart follows this pattern. Unlike most Maya books, the quickstart series is not project based, which is one of it's strengths. The book focuses on the interface, tools, and options, which in the long run makes it great reference book. With a project book, you really need to be sitting at the program to make sense of it. With quickstart you can read it pretty much anywhere and gain useful knowledge. Project base books are great, but make sure you have a copy of these book handy for more explanation on tools and options.
Since this works as a reference book, it has a much longer shelf life, since you can always come back to it to refresh your memory or look up a question.

Maya is not a program to be taken lightly or learned in a day, but the Maya Visual QuickStart Guide is probably one of the best ways to get started. For users with some 3-D experience, this easily digested book introduces Maya and its feature set without overwhelming the reader.

Over 300 pages and 14 chapters, Maya (version 3.5 for Mac, version 4 for Windows) is cleanly deconstructed. The first part of the book focuses on the Maya interface, the plethora of windows and graphs, setting preferences, customizing the interface, and the basics of moving around the application. The "Creating Primitives and Text" section describes the basics of object creation, while subsequent chapters discuss object manipulation, hierarchies, object types, building a model for animation, creating key frames, and finally, rendering the finished product.

If there is a drawback to this fine introductory book, it is that it is too short. Maya offers an incredibly rich and deep feature set, and careers are built on learning to use only subsets of the whole. This book serves as an invaluable introduction for the new Maya user and offers a solid foundation on which to grow. It presents the Maya paradigm in a clear light, and we'd like to see more of Maya's advanced features presented in such a concise manner.

The Maya Visual QuickStart Guide is one of the best ways to learn to use Maya, and it should come bundled with every copy of the program. --Mike Caputo

As with the author's other works (Guide To The Pianist's Repertoire, etc.) this book is comprehensive and probably the best one of its kind. Not only are the mainstays of the concerto repitoire included, but also virtually every concerted work for piano and orchestra that has been published. The amount of literature in this genre is huge, and the author tackles it all with information galore. Recommended!

      Book Description

Like the symphonies of Beethoven, Mozart's piano concertos constitute an extraordinary body of work that will never disappear from our culture. Yet despite widespread recognition of their importance, they still present many interpretive problems. In 1989, the Michigan MozartFest brought expert performers, instrument makers, critics, music theorists, and musicologists together for the first symposium devoted exclusively to Mozart's piano concertos. The twenty-one essays in Mozart's Piano Concertos, culled from that event, richly broaden our understanding of this corpus.
The volume's first section consists of commentaries on the texts of the concertos, including thoughts on creating a critical edition. In subsequent sections, contributors analyze the structure of the pieces and the circumstances in which they were first composed and performed. How do these works compare with other concertos of the period? Where were Mozart's contributions truly original, where conventional? What musical references did he expect his listeners to catch?
Generously illustrated with facsimiles, tables, and more than one-hundred musical examples, Mozart's Piano Concertos substantially advances our understanding of these wonderful works. Its exceptional scope--addressing everything from textual problems (what notes should be played?) to performance practice (how can we make the music sound more nearly as Mozart heard it?)--will make it invaluable to anyone who loves his piano concertos.

5 out of 5 stars Quite possibly the hardest piano music ever written - but well worth it.......2005-08-06

I bought this piece of sheet music after my teacher recommended it as a 'good piano competition piece.' I had already worked on most of Rachmaninoff's 2nd piano concerto (also very difficult) and the third movement of Mozart's 17th concerto. I would definitely not recommend getting this piece if you don't have a MAJOR desire to learn it as it is very difficult. However, the piece is extremely beautiful, and technically showy (which is why it is a 'good competition piece') - probably my favorite piece of sheet music at the moment. I have been playing piano for 12 years and would consider myself fairly advanced - but I still anticipate it taking at least 6-8 months to learn this piece, and that's practicing it up to and about 1 hour per day. Rachmaninoff wrote a masterpiece and it is considered today to be one of the most beautiful and difficult piano concertos, up there with Tchaikovsky's 1st. This edition has a limited amount of fingerings, but it is easily readable and not over-edited like some editions. I wholeheartedly recommend it but will warn you again not to attempt to learn it unless you have a strong desire to do so.

      5 out of 5 stars based on schrimer's edition.......2004-06-15

This is a great jazz etude... Rachmaninoff wrote some really cool harmonies, especially for 1910 or whatever... with polychords, minor major 7ths, dominant b13, block chords... excellent! It's a difficult read, and I still can't play it full speed, but read through this piece and you will feel confident that you can play anything.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Greatest piano concertos arranged for 2 pianos........2000-10-20

for those of u that saw "shrine" i guess u already discovered the "magical" feeling after hearing this piece. w/ this arrangement the piece could be played by two ppl instead of w/ the orch... makes things simplier but sounds just as nice.

          Customer Reviews:

          2 out of 5 stars not good.......2007-08-16

i needed a new version of concerto italiano. so i ordered this b/c i thought of the added bonus of the fantasies in there and select fugues. i previously had the version with the white cover and black font, which had the concerto spread out over i think 18 or so pages. this made it much easier to read, and there were fingering suggestions. this edition here barely has NO fingering suggestions, and barely any dynamic suggestions. and they squished the whole concerto into - i kid you not - 5 miserably cramped pages. please don't buy this... of course we should all go for the blue edition, which is the best for Bach. sorry, i don't know any of the names of the editions, i just know what they look like, but if you're a pianist you probably know what i'm talking about :)

5 out of 5 stars Great book, great music.......2000-06-02

The Italian concerto is the most accurate copy I've ever seen before of what Bach wrote, no more and no less. There's just Bach, no editor's footnotes and the only commentary from the editor is that some might not be by Bach (Those are a heck of a lot easier to play!) such as the gm Fantasia. The print's a bit on the small side, but not too much, but it's clear and easy to read. Enjoy!

The Grieg Concerto in A Minor, Op. 16, and the Schumann Concerto in A Minor, Op. 54 — two of the most popular of all piano concertos in the repertoire — reprinted from authoritative editions. In each, the 2nd piano part is an orchestral reduction, providing pianists with the 2-piano format that is the standard method for rehearsal.

          4 out of 5 stars Concerto level.......2006-11-10

For semi-professinal pianists, these two concertos are perfect. Schumann is without doubt a lot easier, but still very exciting to listen to and to play. If you want to learn an amazing concerto that is not really difficult, go for Grieg. It will dazzle the audience and technically still be playable for the piano student.

5 out of 5 stars Two of the greatest piano concertos in one edition.......2004-06-13

These two excellent piano concertos, seen often coupled on CDs, are paired here in this handsome and inexpensive Dover edition. This is a great addition to a pianist's music library.

              Book Description

György Kurtág's The Sayings of Péter Bornemisza, Op. 7 for soprano and piano (1963-68) is probably the most significant piece of music to have been composed in Hungary since the death of Bartók in 1945. It crowns Kurtág's first mature phase, and its musical motifs have continued to reappear in his works ever since. Rachel Beckles Willson discusses the autobiographical associations at work in the piece, but also its essentially European character. The nature of the reflections on suffering and death in The Sayings, she argues, is emblematic of art from East Central Europe.

Peter Bornemisza was a persecuted reform preacher in sixteenth-century Hungary. Beckles Willson examines why Kurtág chose particular texts by Bornemisza and explores the themes in the work of moral duty, sin, fear and death, and the ways in which these are played out in the music. The inspirational models of Schütz and Schoenberg are also discussed, and a series of interviews with performers of Kurtág's music offers particularly rich perspectives on the position of The Sayings in his output.

The book features an accompanying CD of the work.
