5 out of 5 stars "That's the second time you've mentioned a 'Force.'".......2007-07-13

This neat little anthology contains all three of the original STAR WARS novels---STAR WARS, THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK, and THE RETURN OF THE JEDI. Given the glutinous mass of material that's grown up around STAR WARS (now numbering tens of thousands of items in every media category and form of product, and an entire "Expanded Universe" beyond the six theatrical films) it is amazing to think that STAR WARS all began with one script treatment turned into a novel.

I recall reading it while sitting in the Orlando airport on my way back from Disney World on my seventeenth birthday, just before the movie opened and formally introduced us to Darth Vader, Han Solo, Luke, Leia, See Threepio and Artoo Detoo. At first I thought the cover blurb, "Luke, armed only with his father's light saber" meant a cavalry weapon.

Sci-Fi pulp fiction yes, but these are still the best STAR WARS stories, and if they've become overly familiar, it's only because they've become so much a part of our popular culture. Having all three books in one volume is like having your cake and eating it, too.

So, if you've never read the original trilogy do so. And if you read it a long, long time ago in a galaxy far, far away (that would be the Carter and Reagan Administrations), read it again. IV, V, and VI---hah! They're still numero uno in that world.

3 out of 5 stars If you've got nothing else to do, pick it up..........2007-02-02

This book lets you experience the adventures of the Star Wars movies for yourself without a director's interference. That's the fun part about it--but don't expect some new revelations on characters you've known for 30 years.

It's a fun read if you're yearning to see some familiar characters.

5 out of 5 stars the review on one of the world's most popular saga.......2006-10-24

every saga has a beginning. like "STAR WARS" a saga is a series. "STAR WARS" began with Episode I THE PHANTOM MENACE and ended with Episode VI RETURN OF THE JEDI but the film was connected from episodes I-VI by episode III REVENGE OF THE SITH. the worlds shortest episode is Episode IV A NEW HOPE and the worlds longest is Episode II ATTACK OF THE CLONES if you watched this 6-12 hour saga, you will foolow the story.

5 out of 5 stars Star Wars... the book.......2006-09-08

Callenging to me because I'm not that good at reading. I really liked the story line.
It is an action story. I would change the price to a lower price
so I could buy another book.

4 out of 5 stars interesting look into back story.......2006-07-19

I would recommend these for any fan. Some interesting insights into the films. The prologue to A New Hope has a two page write up that describes the back story for all the prequels. You'll also find some conflicts with the prequels ie, Luke's uncle is said to be Obi-wan's brother and Anakin's unnamed wife lived after Luke and Leia's birth.

Do you know your dewbacks from your banthas? Could you tell the difference between a stormtrooper, a scouttrooper, and a snowtrooper? Could you pick a Rodian out of a lineup? The Complete Star Wars Trilogy Scrapbook can help you acquire this vital information. Illustrations and over a hundred photographs from the original trilogy help you put names to faces--so you'll know that Salacious Crumb is the name of that tiny, cackling animal at Jabba's court. Though the book contains an abridged version of the events covered in the Star Wars trilogy, readers should be advised to see the films first as the book discloses crucial secrets best left to the film to reveal. The book is aimed at younger readers--but SW fans of all ages will enjoy this photo-filled volume. --C.B. Delaney

3 out of 5 stars Easy reading for a young star wars fan but.........2007-04-11

My 7 year old son is a Star Wars fan, I bought this book for his reading practice taking advantage of one of his favorite movies and the continuos interest of knowing about movie facts. I rated three stars because the print out has a lack of quality which makes reading a little bit difficult because of gray letters over a black background. Besides this small drawback he enjoyed very much. My recommendations is to look forward similar scrapbooks with a clearer reading.

5 out of 5 stars Small book BIG memories! A real Star Wars scrapbook.......2005-08-12

Ok yes it has great pictures. Yes it covers Episodes IV, V, and VI. Glossy pictures (some I haven't seen anywhere else) and nice tidbits of background lore. It even alludes to Episodes I, II, and III. It says ages 9-12 but I even liked it (ok 44 year old Sci-fi fan). A real bargain for the price and a nice summary of the Trilogy. I would put it up there with the Star Wars Visual Dictionaries for the pictures. For the price you can check it out but I bet you will be glad you did. As always I love Amazon's packing. My stuff always arrives in great shape - they care. It really is a cool little book. As a gift I think any Star Wars fan would really enjoy it (no matter their age). Peace on.

4 out of 5 stars Very Good!.......2002-03-22

I loved this book very much, and I was surprised how much information it gives you. I love Mark Cotta Vaz and I read his decription books. The book is exellent exept for one thing, it is not very detailed. It has the best pictures from the Star Wars Special Edition and it covers everything. I would definatly recommend this book.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty Good.......1998-04-24

This book is a great starter book for the ameture Star Wars fan. It has great detailed pictures and gives a good amount of info of different things that exist in the Star Wars universe. If you want a lot on info (instead of pictures) get The Guide to the Star Wars Universe. I'd rate it 9.9 it's not perfect but it's about as close as you can get! Still if you want picture, get this book.

5 out of 5 stars I agree with JakeH.......1997-04-27

I very much agree with JakeH. He is actually the one who got me the book as a birthday gift. It has photos and fairly detailed discriptions

                  Book Description

This is the first major set of essays on the Czech composer Leos Janá^Dvcek, widely considered one of the most important composers of the early twentieth century. The essays deal with a range of subjects relating to opera, symphonic poem, instrumental music, cultural context, reception, and Janá^Dvcek as music theorist and analyst. Some topics, such as the sources of his musical expressivity, narrative, and Jan^Dvacek as musical analyst and realist have hitherto received little attention, while other, more conventional topics, such as "speech melody" and Janá^Dvcek's ethnographic activities, are reappraised.

3 out of 5 stars Good reference material. BUT..........2002-01-11

This is a useful reference manual. However, it doesn't appear to be as tailored to the cluster exams as it might claim.

Also -- and more painfully, IMO -- this book STILL uses concepts as of version 5. It's 2002 and the book hasn't been updated from 1998 principles. That's an eternity in this business! Nevertheless, many of the same concepts apply, but it is still in desperate need of a revision to include UDB V7.

                    2 out of 5 stars It's not all there.............2001-11-17

After pouring over the book, and practicing the test questions over and over, I still did not pass the certification. I found that a great number of the questions asked during the certification were NOT covered in the book. The sample questions did not address the many SQL and EXPLAIN questions on the certification exam. It would be nice to not only have the answers to the sample questions, but also the "why is this the correct answer" information as well. Since this book was written with the knowledge of IBM, why didn't the authors provide a representative sample of ALL of the certification test questions, instead of just a few? The certification test is broken into several groups. While the book identifies these sections, it does not organize the questions in the same fashion.

The book appears to be a rehash of the IBM EEE class that is still being taught today. Also, the current level of DB2 is 7.2, the book is written to version 5.

On the plus side, it is the only book for DB2 EEE certification.

                    5 out of 5 stars A must buy book about DB2 Clusters.......1998-10-13

There are no other books on the market quite like this one. Although geared towards DB2 Cluster Certification this book also offers the reader a lot of readable informatiuon on setting up a clustered DB2 enviroment.

It is very well laid out and an easy read. It expects a certain amount of understanding of DB2 UDB already, however, there is a lot of detailed information as and when required to help you along.

No serious DB2 Developer/DBA/Consultant should be without this book if they wish to understand how DB2 EEE works and can be configured.

I have just about every DB2 book published and am happy to answer any questions you may have about Certification or the books I have reviewed. Please feel free to e-mail me.

Leos Janácek met Kamila Stösslová in 1917, when he was 63 and she was 25. She--not his wife of nearly 50 years--was the Czech composer's great love. Janácek's passion for Stösslová coincided with the astonishing artistic flowering of his last decade, and he considered her the inspiration for several works, especially Kát'a Kabanová and the String Quartet No. 2 ("Intimate Letters"). Since both were married to others and lived in different cities, they interacted largely through their correspondence, which provides an incomparable view of one of the 20th century's quirkiest and most rewarding composers.

Janácek's letters are filled with an ebullient poetry; he invented fanciful metaphors--to describe Kamila's breasts, his loneliness--and wove variations on them in letter after letter. (Selections from Stösslová's few surviving letters are interspersed; Janácek burned most, at her request.) After the relationship became more intimate in 1927, he wrote almost daily and his language grew rapturous. He refers to her as his wife or imagines that she's pregnant (though they evidently never consummated the "marriage").

While holding to the busy schedule of an increasingly famous composer, he was more and more obsessed with Stösslová. Janácek's late music jumps with restless invention from one theme to another; it's not hard to observe a similar habit of mind here, as he shifts from Wagnerian flights of ecstasy to fussy advice about Kamila's health. Janácek scholar John Tyrrell, who edited the memoirs of the composer's wife, My Life with Janácek, provides illuminating editorial guidance. --David Olivenbaum

                      Book Description

These are the letters of a great love story. In 1917, the Czech composer Leos Jancek met Kamila Stsslov while on holiday at Luhacovice, a spa resort in Moravia. He was sixty-three and locked in a loveless marriage; she was twenty-six, the wife of an antique dealer frequently away from home. After the holiday, Jancek began writing to Stsslov. Undeterred by her lack of interest in his work and her spasmodic replies, he continued to send her letters until his death eleven years later. An extraordinarily self- revealing portrait emerges of an isolated artist at the height of his creative powers and the beginning of his international fame. It is also a portrait of a lonely man who, as the years went by, came to fantasize about Stsslov as his true "wife"--the inspiration for many of the works of his old age. Most of these letters were suppressed until changing conditions in Czechoslovakia allowed their full publication in 1990. John Tyrrell has edited and translated a comprehensive selection, concentrating on the almost daily letters of the final eighteen months. Supported by a diary of meetings between Jancek and Stsslov, a decoding of the erotic references in the letters, and a selection of mostly unknown photographs, this remarkable book breathes life into the story one of the greatest of operatic composers and provides vital clues to the nature of his creative genius.
