    Book Description

In these thirty meditations on the person of Jesus Christ, Archbishop of St Louis Justin Rigali shows Jesus--in His divinity and humanity, His love and mercy, His way of life, mission, commandments, death, Resurrection, and Incarnation. The author affirms that to believe in Jesus is to accept Him in His entirety. This is a profoundly moving and joyous call "for Jesus." Written from the heart, this book includes reflections on Mary the Mother of Jesus and St. Maximilian Mary Kolbe. It is an uplifting addition to Jesus and Marian scholarship and is wonderful devotional reading for the general reader.

    5 out of 5 stars Inspiring Readings!.......2006-07-16

"Show Us Your Mercy And Love" is a series of 30 talks given to a religious community by Justin Cardinal Rigali. These short (4-11 pages) selections are perfect for a morning or evening reading and reflection. In these readings, scriptural quotations form the basis from which Cardinal Rigali directs the reader's thoughts on God's mercy and love. I started this for some spiritual consolation while on vacation and completed it after our return. Some of the readings helped me to think of things in ways that I had not previously. Others renewed my appreciation of truths which I had long held. I am glad that I bought and read this work and trust that you will too.

5 out of 5 stars Many attempts to debunk Heeren..........2006-10-11

I read this book shortly after its revision came out around 2000, and found it extremely well-argued. Given that, I'm amazed at how vehemently evolutionists attempt to debunk Heeren's points (and even his style of writing).

I'm lead to wonder just how "established" evolution can be when Fred Heeren's book "Show Me God" has a forward written by the person who just won the Nobel Prize for Physics, George Smoot?

Evolutionists can claim that evangelicals are "crazy" or "ignorant", but how can they claim that about the man who won the 2006 Nobel Prize for Physics?

5 out of 5 stars Nothing comes from Nothing.......2006-07-25

Fred Heeran makes science easy to understand, and points out the inconsistencies of scientists who do not believe God created the Universe without a trace of sarcasm. I am in the middle of reading this book, and plan to read all the books in the Wonders that Witness series. His imaginary conversations with Carl - a voice inside his head - brings everything down to earth, and adds a touch of humor. Fred encourages us to ask questions, and not accept answers that don't match up with reason. He says we should not think that the Bilble is true "to us" because we believe it, but that we should believe because it IS true. He challenges the concept of reletive truth, saying that it results in chaos. And he reveals evidence of a loving, intelligent, personal God.

4 out of 5 stars Clear and Exciting .......2006-07-15

I have only praise for this work because of its accessability. It is clearly written and packed with exciting 'new' discoveries about the nature of the universe from the astronomer's lens. I give it four stars for clarity as an introduction and of its power to stimulate interest in other fields.

On a completely different level, this book is useless to prove the existence of God, to disprove the eternity of the world, etc. As Hume has conclusively shown, the cosmological argument is a fallacious argument. You can't posit some quality of the unseen and unobserved (God) based on what's seen and observed. If that were so, we may posit that God is evil based on observation of genocide and good based on our observation of goodness. There has to be uniformity in the argument; for if someone is willing to use the good in the world and credit a deity for that act, so then also the same principle ought to hold that same god as the cause of horrible acts. Thomas Aquinas tried to use this type of cosmological argument for God's existence but he noted that God exists in a different way than everything else exists. But you cannot logically have a proposition in the conclusion that is not to be found in the premise. For example, a logician cannot begin with a look at the earth and deduce that something altogether different from matter created the rolling hills in his gaze. No, it is not observation that leads to God, but a different premise altogether. For if it was on the basis of the observed that we are conducted to God, he would be whatever is logically given in the premise. But there is nothing given--and there is especially no ONE given in the premise (there is no personality in what we observe). We see only matter--we KNOW persons.

Fred Heeren is therefore an inconsistent empiricist or an inconsistent theist. Remember lastly that even if the cosmological argument was formally valid, it would never lead us to believe in the TRIUNE GOD as Karl Barth forcibly mentions.

If there is a 'message from space' it tells us nothing about God. The conclusion is completely subjective. One can look to Michael Polanyi to understand the objectivity fallacy.

1 out of 5 stars Bashing a square peg into a round hole.......2006-04-24

Full-on christians won't (want to) understand what I'm talking about, so go ahead and give me that "not helpful" vote you will be dying to give me after reading what follows. Likewise, the apathetic, if they could be bothered. (By the way, I am not an atheist. However, I was at one time a christian.) For critical thinkers, and others looking to challenge their worldview, I shall continue.

"Show Me god" is a religious book masquerading as a science text. Scientific facts are falsifiable, religious dogma is not. That is, Science deals with the observable, measurable, and tangible - and will admit when it is in error. Religious dogmas are not prone to admit errors; they are about faith in things that may or may not exist, and, may or may not have happened. Religions attempt to give their adherants watertight comfort in the knowledge that their religious denomination is the truest one. Science admits it doesn't have all the answers.

This book tries to confirm and marry christianity (why not any other religion?) with Science, by using "non-sequiteurs". This is like trying to bash a square peg into a round hole. The title itself "begs the question". "Ad populum" is used, and some quotes are taken out of context. Critical thinkers can sharpen their logic and reasoning abilities by reading this book and scrutinising all the presentations. christians may want to get this book to feel good about themselves and their bogus theory known as "intelligent design". (The christian bible has two different versions of creation BTW. Read genesis chapters 1 & 2. Take notes and compare.) And for others, you may like to look into what "critical thinking" means; my sincerest best wishes to you. Deserves less than 1-star.

As someone who provides professional leadership development, and motivational strategies, for women, I originally ordered "Beyond Superwoman" as a resource for my work. By the time I was through the first chapeter, I was calling my female colleagues and buying extra copies for my daughters. The wisdom and shared experience in this book speaks to women of all generations. You don't have to be a CEO to recognize the struggles and tough decisions these "superwomen" faced. I've come away with a renewed promise to myself to streamline my own life, prioritize my goals, and to convey that message with more vigor to my clients and audiences.

It offers a rare and fascinating, explorative conversation with top female CEO's. If this advice had been available to me when I was 13 my life would have been much more productive; I am motivated. The impact of this book can truly improve the world as we are inspired by example to live our lives with focus and good decisions.
I had just finished reading Issacson's, Ben Franklin biography, so impressed with Franklin's networking and multi-dimensional life, when I started Beyond Superwoman. Beyond Superwoman would be in Franklin's library and fortunately it can be in ours. It chronicles some of the most important conversations going on today. Relevant current history to guide us all. I thank the authors for researching and sharing what has not been available before.

This is a fantastic catalog of painted and finished miniature figures from some of the greatest modelers in the United States. Inside you'll find photos of ancient, Medieval, Napoleonic, Civil War, twentieth-century, and even a few fantasy figures--something to please just about anyone. What you will not find is a single demonstration of how these techniques are achieved, nor any instructions, nor any in-progress photos. In other words, this is not a how-to book, and should never be confused with one. Still, if you have ever squinted at a three-inch pewter figure and even clumsily stabbed at it with a 000, you'll be able to learn something from this collection of the work of masters.

        Book Description

What are YOU afraid of? Death, cancer, or that speech you've been asked to give? Fear is that dreaded throat-gripping emotion that strangles us all, according to author Robert L. Simpkins in his new book, Fear Not. Being petrified is nothing new to our generation. Fear today is the same as it has always been--debilitating. It's been crippling people since Adam and Eve. The author dissects fear and how it paralyzed Old Testament characters. Simpkins portrays their struggles, prayers, and God's place in their successful victory over this monstrous enemy. Fear Not will show you that Moses and David were no better or more equipped than us. With God's help, we can conquer our fears once and for all.

5 out of 5 stars Very helpful when dealing with fear.......2007-03-29

I really enjoyed this book. I have been dealing with fear in coming to grips with a terminal illness. This book helped me to realize that I am not the only one who is dealing with fear and that God can use any of us in any situation. To be able to relate fear to the Old Testiment and see how they handled the struggles helped to increase my faith and make my walk with Jesus that much more strong. Thank you for writing such a wonderful book.

5 out of 5 stars Robert L. Simkins points people in the right direction--to the Bible!.......2007-03-27

When it comes to an instruction book on how to life on this earth, the Bible is it. Whether we're looking for answers regarding how we should live our lives, where we should spend our money or how to deal with fear, the Bible should always be our ultimate resource. Robert L. Simpkins does an excellent job of showcasing the many examples within the Old Testament of various followers of God and how they faced fear head-on. When you realize that you're not alone--that great men of God like David, Isaiah, Noah, and others faced similar situations--there's power in that. I found Simpkins' book well-written and well organized (and I couldn't find any grammatical or spelling errors on the back cover).

2 out of 5 stars Ok content, horrible editing.......2007-01-25

I picked up this book because I struggle with fear. A book which described how to overcome one's fears by exploring the lives of Old Testament characters seemed interesting. Unfortunately, I was disappointed. The content is so-so. It seems more like a summary of the Old Testament than an exploration into God's power to overcome fear. "David was afraid, but he trusted God." Yes, that's true, however I was hoping for a bit more depth. The author seems to be writing more to non-Christians than to Christians. Perhaps that was the intent, but the back cover lead me to believe otherwise. What troubled me more than the content was the editing. There is a grammatical error on the back cover of the book. Beyond that, I could spend hours discussing the poor grammar, misplaced punctuation, and numerous typographical errors. Does Tate Publishing actually provide the editorial services they claim on their website? I appreciate a Christian publishing house providing an avenue for little-known Christian authors to publish their works, but shouldn't they edit them first? I could also write an essay on how this reflects on the Christian community as a whole, but I digress.
My point? If you're looking for a book that will assist you in overcoming your fears with the help of God, I encourage you to look elsewhere. If you're interested in an overview of the Old Testament, this is a good resource.

In this addition to the Cambridge Companion series, 13 essays by 11 authors provide a useful and interesting introduction to the music and personality of Alban Berg. The volume is divided into three main sections and a postscript: "Culture and Environment," "From Song to Opera," and "After Wozzeck." The essays deal with everything from "cultural politics" to Berg's compositional techniques, and the postscript tries to establish Berg's place in and influence on the history of 20th-century composition. The book suffers in places from an overly academic approach to its subject (not to mention an overly academic vocabulary), but the reasonably informed lay reader with an interest in Berg will still find it informative and helpful in understanding his music and its context.

          Book Description

Alban Berg's achievement is based on an extraordinarily small musical output, but it includes towering masterpieces such as the operas Wozzeck and Lulu, and his last work, the Violin Concerto. These and all Berg's other substantial works are discussed in this wide-ranging Companion, which contains essays written from a variety of historical and critical perspectives, outlining the place of the music in the cultural history of its time and within the broader interplay of twentieth-century fashions, aesthetics and ideas.
