5 out of 5 stars WONDERFULL SONGS FROM HILLARIOUS TO TOUCHING.......2001-07-18

I have been looking for this book, since I first heard the soundtrack Christams morning. Then I went to Broadway and saw the show last April. Yazbek has shared with us what are sure to become clasics in the musical theatre world. If this show had come out any other year it would have swept the tony's for music and score (unfortunetly it had to content with "The Producers". The song "You Walk With Me" is such a touching testamony to friendship. It is one of the most touching songs to come out of a muscial in recent years. It would also work well in a church service. Then there is the song "Big Ass Rock" which has sent everyone I have played it for into fits of laughter and when they finally stop they demand that I play it again. This Book is a must for anyone who buys sheet music to show tunes.

The film The Full Monty was the sleeper hit of 1997. Made on a modest budget of about $3 million, it grossed more than $200 million worldwide and picked up an Academy Award nomination for Best Picture. This adaptation of Simon Beaufoy's screenplay, published to coincide with the film's release on video, fleshes out the situations and characters, exploring their motivations and ruminations in ways that the cinema cannot.

The story is the same: a group of unemployed steelworkers living in the depressed town of Sheffield resolve to pick up some side money by stripping in a public club. Lacking the physical attractions of your typical Chippendale dancers, the six heroes go for "the full monty" anyway, hoping to redeem themselves in the eyes of their community. Wendy Holden's novelization is every bit as funny and moving as the film and is highly recommended to its fans.

      Book Description

The Full Monty is a brilliant and original comedy about six men driven to face their fears of inadequacy and loss in hard times. Broke, out of work and on the verge of losing their wives and children, they come up with a desperate, brilliant plan: Make like Chippendale dancers and strip for cash!

The Full Monty is the story of a last-ditch attempt by a group of working-class men to redeem themselves as reliable in the eyes of their community. In scenes as hysterical as they are tender, they discover that "the full monty" requires more than dexterity, a fit body and the right moves; and that the confidence they need can only come from stripping bare the deeper issues that trouble their individual lives. The result is a humane, triumphant comedy that has won the hearts of millions around the world.

In her novel based on the critically acclaimed box-office hit, Wendy Holden revisits our favorite moments both hilarious and heartwarming from The Full Monty.

" A delightful comedy about out-of-work, out-of-shape men who deide to become strippers."
      New York Times

"A comic delight! An engrossing study of the male ego stripped bare."
      USA Today

"The world's first full-frontal fairy tale!"
      Entertainment Weekly

PLEASE NOTE-All the reviews (including the editorial ones) seem to be referring to the novel by Wendy Holden which was based on the screenplay listed here. My review is for the screenplay- isbn 1901680029, NOT the novel which is improperly linked as the other edition of this book.
      __________________________________________________________________

Every bit as fun as the movie! Excellent peek into the psyche of the working class man, self esteem and body image, societal pressures, and the differences between men and women. There were also a few scenes that did not make it to the film version. Reading the screenplay was a wonderful aide in helping to grasp and understand the language of the film as well. It was written in the same accents as it was spoken. I really enjoyed reading this and it made re-watching the film that much more enjoyable.

1 out of 5 stars I found it real dull.......2005-03-30

I thought I'd get up to speed with this book, since I missed the movie. Maybe knowing the book was written based on the movie, probably the screenplay, may have biased me.

It was not at all like reading a "normal" novel, like a bestseller. It was like what it purported to be: an author given the probably unenviable task of "cripping" on a screenplay to come up with a book.

But, I could see where the movie would be better, because you do need the bodily aspect, the dancing, and the music, to make this story work. The book has none of that. The cover has pictures of the actors, but that's it.

The build-up to the climax, when the men dance, seemed too long and repetitive, the same kind of failings happening over and over. Finally, the climax, when the men dance and "all is forgiven," and everyone lives happily ever after; it's too much like a fairy tale.

I guess that was the intention of the original writers, to make it like a modern fairy tale. I think I'd stick with Grimm or Hans C. Andersen, better. Diximus.

1 out of 5 stars Just plain awful.......2003-01-16

Oh, I am so sorry that you lost digits in an industrial accident. I was going to ask you to count on your fingers the GOOD books you have seen wriiten FROM a movie. Maybe you can still do it, because this book won't be on your list.

Wordy, plain, flaccid, vapid, artless... Who in the world hired this done?

If you INSIST on reading a copy, get one through your library, and donate the difference to charity!

4 out of 5 stars What we do to turn a buck.......2001-10-05

The book (on which the film was based) is, at the same time, tragic, funny and moving. Full of the dark, working-class humor of the north of England, it tells the story of a group of unemployed men who decide that emulation of the Chippendales would be a good way to turn a buck. Sadly, these anti-heroes lack the skill or the physique of their well-muscled counterparts but decide, nevertheless, to 'go the full Monty' and give it a try. The community is kept in the dark as our six heroes practice the routines and try to tighten up the flab.

The Full Monty highlights the fears and inadequacies of men who have begun to lose their self-respect and possibly their families. The confidence they need can only come from stripping bare the deeper issues that trouble their individual lives (pun intended). The result is a humane, idiosyncratic, triumphant comedy that has won the hearts of millions around the world. Maybe the first full-frontal fairy tale!

I've both read the book and seen the film. The book is better, taking time to examine in more depth the characters of Gaz, Dave, Lomper, Horse, Guy and Gerald.

      3 out of 5 stars Doesn't measure up........2000-07-14

Whether in film or in novel form, The Full Monty is a charming story. In an age of copious "chick-flicks," The Full Monty (finally!) presents its masculine counterpart. Though its themes are gender universal--financial hardship, self-image, and friendship, to name a few--here we get a believable, side-splitting glimpse into the male perspective. However, Wendy Holden's adaptation is stripped of all the character possessed by the screenplay on which it's based. The characters lack likeability, thus a story that is potentially rich in both tender and comedic moments falls short of successful. If you want to go The Full Monty, I recommend reading the screenplay or renting the video instead.

This book really is the type of publication that gets you no closer to the subject. If you enjoyed the film then this book just won't be for you. The words 'jumping on a bandwaggon in the hope of cashing in' come to mind. Far better to read the screenplay of the film, which is fully illustrated and contains contributions from the director and writer Simon BeaFoy.

1 out of 5 stars A misleading cover & title will disappoint most.......1997-11-28

Yes, the front cover does have the TFM movie poster on it, but that's pretty much the only connection this book has to this popular movie. This is NOT a book about the characters in TFM, nor a behind-the-scenes peek, nor even interviews with the people involved.

This is a light-hearted, frivolous look at the world of male strippers. There are silly quizzes and opinions from ordinary people but hardly anything directly referring to the movie, apart from a number of low quality black & white photos.

But even if you were seriously interested in the art of male stripping, this book is just too shallow to consider. Honestly, you are better off spending the money seeing the movie again instead.

In a relentlessly smart book full of colorful anecdotes and deft pop-culture references, author David Frum describes the social convulsions of the 1970s: "We live in a world made new, and made new not by new machines, but by new feelings, new thoughts, new manners, new ways." The 1960s have a reputation as America's turning-point decade, but Frum convincingly argues that the 10 years following mattered more. The 1970s, he writes, "left behind a country that was more dynamic, more competitive, more tolerant; less deferential, less self-confident, less united; more socially equal, less economically equal; more expressive, more risk-averse, more sexual; less literate, less polite, less reticent."

The precise dates of this transformation are not as important as the reasons behind it, however, and the explanation in How We Got Here for what happened is both original and compelling. He says America's midcentury confidence was an anomaly. At some point, "the rebellion of an unmilitary people against institutions and laws formed by a century of war and the preparation for war" was inevitable. Rather than pondering why Americans trust their public institutions today less than they did during the Watergate revelations, for instance, Frum turns the question on its head: Why was the trust so high previous to that experience? His narrative describing the dizzy whirl of progress is absorbing, and his warning against both the nostalgic myths of the past and the uncritical acceptance of recent change is wise. How We Got Here also has a perfect title: there may not be a better book available on the broad currents of American social life in the second half of the 20th century. --John J. Miller

              Book Description

A sweeping condemnation of the decline of American culture since the 1970s by one of America's leading conservative writers.

For many, the 1970s evoke the Brady Bunch and the birth of disco. In this first, thematic popular history of the decade, David Frum argues that it was the 1970's, not the 1960's, that created modern America and altered the American personality forever. A society that had valued faith, self-reliance, self-sacrifice, and family loyalty evolved in little more than a decade into one characterized by superstition, self-interest, narcissism, and guilt. Frum examines this metamorphosis through the rise to cultural dominance of faddish psychology, astrology, drugs, religious cults, and consumer debt, and profiles such prominent players of the decade as Werner Erhard, Alex Comfort, and Jerry Brown. How We Got Here is lively and provocative reading.

              2 out of 5 stars GAK!.......2006-12-20

This book is bad. There is no clearly defined thesis save for its title. The author used an abundance of statistics and poll data without regard for the context of the data nor any analysis thereof. He often interjects snide comments into his discussion and topics flow nearly stream-of-conciseness style. Many of his pop-cultural references are just plain wrong- Public Enemy did not produce the song "Cop Killer" Ice-T did. He incorrectly recalls the details of the opening scene of "The Godfather", noting that the undertaker had bribed police- that is not what was said in the movie, but as told by the author it helps make his point. He mentions that POWs were the inspiration for the first "Rambo" movie: First Blood. POWs were actually the premise of the second "Rambo" film. And regardless, neither came out in the 70s. With such heavy reliance on pop-culture to make whatever point he is trying to make you'd think he'd get these details correct.

This is pop-history at its worst. Not for any serious student of history or even for a casual reader who wants a well written but not quite academic history.

For a real history of the 1970s complete with analysis, a broad spectrum approach and a more academic style try "Something Happened: a Political and Cultural Overview of the Seventies" by Berkowitz. For a less academic but equally intelligent and well written study- "The Seventies: The Great Shift in Culture, Society and Politics" by Schulman. Read both, they cover some overlapping info in different ways and in different levels of detail.

4 out of 5 stars Entertaining though a bit slanted view of the 70s.......2005-09-25

Frum shares some very insightful and at times very funny views of the significance of what was truly a bizzare decade. Reading this reminded me of many trends and developments that for someone who came of age in the 70s formed the backdrop to my own young adulthood. While Frum certainly sees the 70s as the beginning of a decline in morality and the old order and this colors his writing, there are some valid observations about some things that seemed important at the time and seem downright ridiculous in retrospect. The man is funny.

3 out of 5 stars A fun read, but hardly objective.......2005-09-13

David Frum's book on the 1970s is a fast-paced, cleverly-written analysis of the very painful and tumultuous decade that he claims shaped today's America. Since that decade ended, nostalgia for bell-bottoms, smiley faces, and disco seems to surface every few years; it is sometimes easy to forget how cynical and pessimistic people were during the seventies, about government, society and eachother. Frum doesn't let us forget. He lays it all bare before us: the crime, the corruption, the energy crisis, the sense that the End of the World was just around the corner. He very skillfully creates a feeling of relief that we Americans are finally coming to our senses after an unspeakable decade of depravity.

And yet, somehow, after reading the book, one is left unsatisfied, with a feeling of being sold a bill of goods that is almost, well, like living through the seventies. Having reflected for a while on why that is, the best answer I can come up with is that Frum has neglected to weigh the alternatives that faced policymakers during the decade he so cleverly criticizes. It is easy to attack a course of action, when you do not consider the cost of alternatives. This is not simply "Monday Morning Quarterbacking" or 20/20 hindsight. It is an almost complete failure to consider the consequences that would have flowed from reaching an opposite policy choice.

I'll give one example that may serve as a paradigm for what is missing from Frum's book. He bitterly criticizes a Supreme Court case called Goldberg v. Kelly, which decided that welfare recipients are entitled to "some kind of a hearing" from the authorities before their benefits are cut off for alleged misconduct. Frum blames this decision for creating a costly and inefficient litigation explosion in America. Yet, consider the alternative. What if government could cut off benefits (on which many people depended at the time for their livelihood) without giving the beneficiary any right to tell his or her story? Wouldn't that lead to horrible abuses and overreaching of government power? Isn't the whole point of the separation of powers, the due process clause, and other provisions of the Bill of Rights to protect people from the arbitrary exercise of government power? We can argue about whether a formal hearing requirement serves that purpose, about what sort of judicial review ought to be available, and about what kind of hearing should be required, but to simply dismiss the whole question by saying that welfare benefits are not "property" in some absolute sense, without recognizing any of the equities involved, as Frum does, is so far from objective analysis that the whole point has been lost! Frum goes on to wax eloquent about other extensions of the due process clause, insisting that school officials should be able to kick your children out of school without any kind of hearing, for example, because the hearing requirement only protects "bad boys" trying to [...] the system. Huh? Does the idea that some kids who did nothing wrong might be swept up in an overreaching by school officials never even enter his mind? We can argue about whether there ought to be more effective discipline in schools (I certainly think so) but please, let's not pretend that there is no value at all in giving someone faced with suspension or expulsion a chance to tell his side of the story.

This is merely one example of failing to balance the cost and benefits inherent in things like the women's movement, the embracing of new religions and lifestyles, etc. Perhaps some other author will someday write a book on the seventies that has the zest and sting of Frum's work, but that presents things a bit more even-handedly.

              4 out of 5 stars A Fresh Approach.......2005-04-15

So often history is written from either the humanistic or postmodern perspective that it is genuniely refreshing to read another take on a historical time period. Frum does just that. While his analysis is clearly subservient to his ideology, Frum does make some interesting points about the 70s that both the humanistic and postmodern perspectives lack. Not only is Frum's analysis skewed by his ideology, his premise is also poor. Frum dislikes the current culture or "Modern Life" of the 21st century and has a serious nostalgia complex for the 1950s, which immediately colors his perceptions.
Frum does, however, successfully bring to light specifics about the hysterics of the 70s oil crisis, and the "Look at Me" section is particularly intriguing. The use of statistics is a powerful vehicle for Frum's thesis despite the possibility (as is true with all forms of evidence) to mislead with statistics.
The draw for this book, despite its warped premise and polemic approach, is that it is so different than more common approaches in history. Humanistic historiography assumes that people and nations make decisions from some sort of grand utilitarian perspective, when in fact people rarely, and nations never, act out of some understanding of the "greater good." The neo-Freudian postmodern historiography which insists on sexualizing everything is so hopelessly foolish that when I read works like Imperial Leather I half expect to have some Jungian dream analysis at the end.
What Frum attempts to do - write history from the right - is no more a sin than humanistic and postmodern historians to impose their ideology on the historical record. People and nations make decisions based on the choices that confront them not out of repressed desires or humanistic ideals. I think a real politik historiography is most rational as both political, social and economic history. Frum, while he misaims, attempts just that.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting slant on a maligned decade........2005-04-06

David Frum can write, and he takes a subject that usually gets superficial treatment, and comes up with some very good insights. An awful lot of traditions, and social norms, and political, civil, and infrastructural trends were forever broken or altered in the seventies, a lot more than the sixties, the supposed great decade of radical change and revolution.
Overall, a good read. The sections on activist judges and the civil rights movement and the school riots in Boston was especially enlightening. A good book, but hard to categorize--not truly a history book, not popular reading, and not especially light reading or fun fare. I think, though, that it can be rewarding.
I learned of this book through National Review Online, so I expected it to be very conservative, and I didn't find it that way at all.

                  Book Description

Thirty years ago most people started their day with a cup of Maxwell House. Now you can buy a cappuccino made with Sumatran coffee beans and steamed milk. A generation ago, we idealized the craggy, inexpressive man epitomized by Gary Cooper. Today Clint Eastwood feels obliged to weep on screen. We live in a world made new, and made new not only by new machines, but also by new feelings, new thoughts and new manners. A Rip van Winkle who nodded off in the 1940s and woke up today would be astonished by women bus drivers, middle-aged men going to work in khaki pants and baseball caps, millions of children in daycare, and the crumbling of the mainline Protestant churches.

If asked when and how these changes came about, most people would probably point to the 1960s. But David Frum argues that it was the supposedly quiescent 1970s that created modern America, that altered the American personality forever. The decade left behind a country that was less self-confident, less literate, less polite, less economically equal, more competitive, more expressive and more sexual. Frum examines this metamorphosis through political events, popular opinion polls, films, music, advertising and more to describe the most total social transformation the United States has lived through since the coming age of industrialism. How We Got Here is lively and provocative reading.
