Book Description
A biography of Tennessee Williams' iconic play and the movie adaptation that launched Marlon Brando's career-and defined Vivien Leigh's-by the author of All About All About Eveand Close-Up On Sunset Boulevard. Exhaustively researched, witty and exuberantly opinionated, When Blanche Met Brandois everything a fan needs to know about the ground-breaking New York and London stage productions of Williams' 'Streetcar' as well as the classic Brando/ Leigh film directed by Elia Kazan. Sam Staggs' interviews with the living cast members of each production reveal for the first time details of how the play became a classic, and make this book satisfying as both a pop culture read and as a deeper piece of thinking about a well-known story.Fans will renew their curiosity about the connection between the role of Blanche and Viven Leigh's insatiable sexual appetite and later descent into breakdown. They may also-for the first time-question whether the character of Blanche was actually 'mad' or whether her supposed madness was symptomatic of another disorder. The chapter on censorship of the film reads like a thriller-and an indictment. Staggs' new book will fascinate fans and enrich newcomers' understanding of A Streetcar Named Desire's importance in American theater and movie history.
Customer Reviews:
I Have Always Depended on the Kindness of Good Writing.......2007-07-30
I was thrilled to discover a book dedicated entirely to the history of this seminal piece of theatre. Imagine my disappointment when I found the author constantly injecting himself into the proceedings and peppering his prose with cheesy "insights," mainly about Brando's sex appeal or catty tangents that don't further one's understanding of the play/film. The editors must have been asleep at the wheel on this one as the book hopscotches around and, sadly, gives short shrift to the actual writing of the play. Ultimately the title's promise of something "Scandalous" is never really delivered, aside from some scandalously bad writing. The upside to this book is that it is meticulously researched and does contain some revelatory moments, especially interviews with long-forgotten actors, designers and behind-the-scenes players that helped shape the legend of "Streetcar."
Still think about it sometimes.......2007-07-27
Having been in love with Tennessee Williams works, particularly a Streetcar Named Desire, this book was a thrill to read. A man who has obviously done his research covers every nuance of the play and film.
I am now proud to know how everything was produced, the stories behind everyone from the costumer to the producer to actors, and continue to recognize them in other films. He gives you a view of many many different Blanches and productions, as well as a through view of the most famous ones.
And unlike the Tennessee Williams bio. by Donald Spoto, it rejoices the play rather than tries to find the negative.
It is everything you wanted to know about the play and more. And all in all the author clearly demonstrates a love for the play, and all it's beautiful details.
What about the other Stanleys?.......2007-07-03
I enjoyed Sam Staggs' book about "Streetcar!" However, I didn't find it as thorough as his other books about "All About Eve" and "Sunset Boulevard." There were plenty of details about the Brando-Tandy & Brando-Leigh versions of "Streetcar," but hardly a mention of the Ralph Meeker and Anthony Quinn/Uta Hagen productions of "Streetcar...!" There was one humourous mention of Judith Evelyn as Blanche, but I would have been more interested in hearing about these two versions rather than all the other operatic and various foreign productions of "Streetcar"!
a good ride .......2007-05-09
i enjoy sam staggs retelling of history. it is so obvious that he loves the films he researches. and it's just as obvious that he's a gay as a bunch of purple tulips!
i read through this book a good three times because the amount of research and interaction with the information is so dense that you just don't catch all of it the first time.
which film is next in his lexicon--'the women'--of course!
Reads like confessions of a culture vulture, volume 3........2006-09-19
I don't want to be harsh, but here goes.
'Exhaustively researched' is accurate, given the bibliography he consulted and referenced whatever he could mine from a daunting pile of works. One is grateful it all seems to be compiled in one volume but in the end was it necessary?
Staggs can't help but butt in with his personal opinions and unfounded speculation every now and again and you know he is scraping the bottom of the barrel when he starts obssesively listing every actress who ever played Blanche, tried on her costume or even contemplated playing Blanche, any headline that was ever printed that used the phrase 'kindness of strangers' and perhaps the most pitiful excuse ever to keep going with the topic, going so far as to invent backstage gossip.
I don't know if this amounts to a whole pile of beans or not, but you do feel that he took the lazy tabloid route and picked the film to pieces looking for scandal that wasn't really there. The author sheepishly admits as much. There have been brilliant assessments of Streetcar that have appraised the play, the social undercurrents and madness which inspired it, and it's impact to the public. Don't look for it here. This book doesn't have this solid foundation of academic scholarship or critique. It's thesis is mere curiosity. It's more of a complete idiots guide that goes in all directions rather than an studied annotation. Maybe it is simply that the story of putting Streetcar out on film isn't as fascinating as Gone With the Wind (see the excellent 'Scarlett, Rhett and a Cast of Thousands) but still there is good stuff there, only it might have come off better had the material been given more thought and placed in context.
With regards to Vivien Leigh, not much is actually said. Of course she did have a mental breakdown afterwards but Staggs completely misses how dangerously close she came into the psyche of Blanche in real life, or why. Likewise no assessment of Brando, and his interpretation of Stanley other than he might have wanted to bed Leigh (but then, what man wouldn't?) . The book seems to run out of steam after the intial foray into the shooting schedule. Even Tenessee Williams creative role is glossed over.
It seems inevitable the reader will, by the end, finish by sighing 'so what?' I know I did. It's an exhausting and dare I say it, in the end, pointless read. I kind of prefer my stories to have at least a moral to them. In then end it's All About Staggs Desire To Know Everything About Streetcar than anything else.
This is the third of an apparent series. Perhaps Staggs will keep going on a fourth? What next.. Lolita?

Customer Reviews:
This book can help.......2007-05-26
If you've wanted to write songs but have been frustrated despite years of theory lesson, thousands of songs you've transcribed and sing, and dozens of 'how to write a hit song' books, this is the book for you.
The book has specific techniques for freeing your muse and getting songs written. This is the best book I've read for overcoming writer's block or wondering what to write about.
Even if you're not frustrated..........2007-05-25
Every person who wants to write songs should read this book even if you're not frustrated. Good for anybody at any skill level who's ever had writer's block. (Which means everybody!) It is absolutely amazing! If you take the time to do what the book suggests (it's fun I promise), you will amaze yourself! It's a quick read but the ideas are great.
The Frustrated Songwriter's Handbook.......2007-05-12
The approach taken in the book reminds me of "Morning Pages" in "The Artist's Way." (Writing 3 pages of "flow of consciousness" material a day) Although I have not, (nor plan to) begin what the authors call a "lodge," I find the exercises helpful and insights into creating songs refreshing. I think the main jist of the book is to forget your perfectionism and write, write, write.
Even for a pro writer, these ideas are fantastic!.......2006-08-09
People never have TALKING BLOCKS...so why should they have writing blocks?! This book is a radical blast through stuckness, perfectionism, laziness, creative slumps and it is ALSO a cure for the thought that songs only happen when we're fondled by the Muse.
Sure, it takes a long time to learn the craft of writing, to do brilliant REwriting, and some songs take a long gestation period.
But sometimes you have to GO FOR IT. Going for speed and quantity, in the ways this book suggests, can be liberating. And there are fine points here that can be adapted to support your creativity even when you're not doing an all-out 24hr thing.
I'm a pro writer, with major label, TV credits, singer-songwriter credits, I teach writing. (My CD's available on Amazon.) But THIS book made me want to jump up and down because IT'S SO DIFFERENT THAN ALL THE OTHER SONGWRITING BOOKS! Whatever's on your shelf...you don't have what's here...
The only thing that puzzles me is why there are no lodges yet in Nashville...or on the East Coast. Are only West Coasters unafraid and radical and willing to go on a 24-hour writing marathon?
I may have to start my own lodge.
Working on the secret handshake. Buy the book. Have FUN!
Ruth Greenwood, Ruthenium Music
OK For What It Is.......2006-08-02
This book is alright for what it is. I had different expectations of this book. It focussus primarily on musical ideas and development of those ideas, not so much on lyrics. There are some very good ideas here, but I think that I was looking for something different. However the IMM is an interesting concept that would and does work quite well for many. I'm rating this for at four stars because of my different expectations and for the sake of fairness and ojectivity.

Succeeding in Music: A Business Handbook for Performers, Songwriters, Agents, Managers and Promoters.......2007-08-08
This is an excellent book. All the tools necessary for success are included here. Stiernberg even gives you the format and ideas for a business plan, which is essential for any serious entrepreneur. Everyone in the music biz should get this book.
A Musician's Business Plan Textbook.......2007-03-01
I've read too many music business books that try to be all things to all musician readers and end up being shallow overviews of the industry. Succeeding In Music focuses on one thing and does it thoroughly. At its core, SIM could be called a musicians textbook for writing a business plan. Each chapter takes you through the steps necessary to make a legitimate small business out of whatever your music venture may be. If you're looking for cute anecdotes or secrets to getting a record deal, this book is not for you. In fact, it's a rather dry read. But if you want to make a serious business out of your band/record company/studio etc., then this book is the first step that must not be skipped. It IS a workbook, so it will take some work. I found the sample plan at the end of the book to be particularly helpful, and the enclosed CD-ROM contains all the forms and worksheets found in the text. This book is a necessary edition for those of us who want a music career and are willing to do the dull stuff it takes to get there.
Great.......2006-05-20
A great title detailing the ropes for all the people involved in producing a hit record. Given that so many people are involved in the producing cycle, starting from the songwriter to the promoter to the performer, it is hard to collect all the information into one title. Fortunately John Stiernberg succeeded in putting all that is needed for producing hit records into one title, explaining the parts of all the people involved and detailing each role with real life examples.
Good book, but impractical at times.......2006-05-15
This is a good commentary on the business side of the music world, but at times the contained advice seems somewhat impractical. It seems like you're being told to do something, but not how to do it. However, lots of the philosophy and viewpoints held within the book are worth reading. If you want some more specific help, check out "How To Make A Fortune In The Music Industry By Doing It Yourself: Your Personal Step-By-Step Guide To Having A Successful Career In The Music Business ... A Great piece of work.......2006-04-21
I highly recommend this book to gain greater insights in the Music business or any business. It was a great buy along with a couple of manuals I purchased from Musicbrains.net entitled the Indie label Kit.
Book Description
This revised, updated and expanded edition offers savvy dealmaking techniques, methods to protect musical works, and career-building and money-saving tips for musicians. It is an invaluable primer for artists and songwriters who feel like they are at the mercy of industry pros.
Customer Reviews:
My musical bible.......2006-05-15
If you're ready to take your fascination with music and its creation to the next level, this is exactly the place you should start. While refraining from being ridiculously long, it outlines basically everything you could want to know. If you're looking for more help with legal terms and contracts, I suggest "101 Music Business Contracts" by Platinum Millennium.
Complete intro to the industry, A must have book!!!.......2000-10-03
David Naggar give you a very straight forward break down of the music industry. IF you are an artist, manager, producer, promoter or anything that has to do with the record business you need to read this book. Even if you think you got it all covered this little handbook might open your eyes to something that you might not have encountered yet. Similar to Kashif's 'Everything you'd better know' Naggar gives a very readable explanation to a lot of issues that plague artists and managers such as royalties and ownership and control rights.
If you are serious about being sucessful in the music business then I suggest you begin by reading this book, you will find that many music books sort of repeat themselves and it's almost like you are reading the same thing over and over but if you do not lose interest each book has something different that can be of a good reference.
This is an excellent "easy-to-read" resource guide.......1997-07-22
I love this book because it's 1)not boring 2)easy to read 3)and very resourceful. After reading this you know that you do have a chance in the "business" without getting ripped-off if you follow the guidelines - research and have people working for that are "for you". So If you don't want to get ripped-off you better read this book or else "Show them the money!"

Too Simple........2000-07-06
The Songwriters handbook is an outstanding book all in all, over all.It just has one drawback that weighs the heightened excellency down...and that is the creativity point of view.Tom Hall does a wonderful job of explaining the different ways to approach and take up songwriting, but he also tends to pull your creativity out of you.I bought this book hoping it would help me make my lyrics more creative...you know, make you dig more to reveal the idea and point the song is trying to bring across. The songwriter's handbook wants you to make everything simple and clear.Besides that, this book is a goody.

Outdated, but still some decent information..........2006-09-09
Easy to read, large type, clear instructions and some basic good information is contained in this book. However, published in 1977, the music industry has radically changed in the last couple of decades, so some of the information about how to submit songs for sale and publication is a bit outdated. All in all, if you can find a used copy for cheap, it might be worth it to read this book. It's an easy and fast read, and does contain some helpful writing information. Just be sure to do your own homework when it comes to the recording, producing, and submission sections.
I'd like to see this book revamped and updated, but I don't think that's going to happen, and truth is, there are probably a lot better books on the subject that can be purchased that are a bit more modern.
